Short answer: Often, a photonic quantum computer can operate in a conventional data center, but there is no universal facility design. A room-temperature system such as ORCA’s PT Series arrives as a rack-scale appliance using ordinary electrical power, network connectivity and data-center cooling. A utility-scale system such as PsiQuantum’s architecture adds liquid-helium circulation, cryogenic mechanical plant and a dedicated cryoplant. Before reserving space, obtain the exact vendor installation specification and design the rack, power, heat rejection, fiber, controls and safety systems around that model.

The largest infrastructure mistake is treating “photonic” as a complete specification. Photonic processors may use telecom-grade fiber and modest environmental controls, yet still require substantial classical servers, timing electronics, monitoring and service access. The checklist below separates what a normal computer room can provide from the additions required by cryogenic, multi-rack deployments.

Can a photonic quantum computer run in a normal data center?

For room-temperature platforms, usually yes. ORCA Computing describes its hardware as operating at room temperature, fitting standard racks and becoming operational within hours, with no special facility modifications beyond power and network connectivity stated on its data-centre information. The Open Compute Project’s 2026 QPU-infrastructure white paper likewise presents an ORCA photonics example with low sensitivity to magnetic fields, vibration, humidity and temperature.

That does not make every installation plug-and-play. The rack must support the equipment’s mass, the electrical service must cover the QPU and its auxiliaries, cooling must remove the actual heat load, and fiber routes must meet the vendor’s loss and bend-radius limits. Multi-rack systems also need a carefully engineered optical and classical-control network.

Utility-scale photonic designs are a different class of facility. PsiQuantum says its chips are cooled with liquid helium flowing through a cryogenically cooled copper backplane, analogous to a server-rack backplane. Its Brisbane project includes a purpose-built cryogenic plant with Linde Engineering. A site with that architecture should be planned more like an industrial process installation inside or beside a data center than like a single IT rack.

Two infrastructure patterns you should distinguish

Characteristic Room-temperature rack system Cryogenic, utility-scale system
Example in the published material ORCA PT Series; Xanadu Aurora demonstration PsiQuantum utility-scale architecture
Processor environment Room temperature Liquid-helium cooling through a cryogenic copper backplane
Rack footprint ORCA specifies 42U and 750 kg for a PT Series system; Aurora used four independent server racks Rack-based photonic blades plus cryogenic plant and supporting mechanical/electrical equipment
Published power figures ORCA lists 6 kW for the PT Series; an OCP reference row lists approximately 3 kW of environmental power for its ORCA example No complete facility megawatt figure is public in the cited material; a PsiQuantum page cites approximately 30 W of cooling power per cabinet, which is not the site’s electrical input
Fiber approach Low-loss telecom fiber between modules and classical equipment PsiQuantum says it uses standard telecom optical fiber already deployed in conventional data centers, subject to cryogenic-system interfaces
Facility additions Redundant power, conventional heat rejection, network and service access Helium supply and return, cryoplant auxiliaries, controls, safety systems and substantial plant space

The 3 kW and 6 kW figures are not contradictory ratings for every ORCA installation. They come from different descriptions: OCP’s approximately 3 kW value is an environmental-power entry for a reference example, while ORCA’s 6 kW figure is the PT Series specification. Treat both as model- and configuration-specific planning numbers, not as a universal photonic-QPU rating.

Rack space, floor loading and service clearances

Reserve the rack and the floor

ORCA’s PT Series specification is 42U high, weighs 750 kg and is listed at 6 kW. A 750 kg cabinet can exceed the allowable point load of a raised floor even when the average floor loading appears adequate. Have the facilities team verify slab or raised-floor ratings, caster loads, seismic restraints where applicable, and the route from the loading dock to the final row.

Xanadu’s Aurora demonstration used four independent server racks and connected 35 photonic chips. A deployment with several racks needs more than four empty cabinet positions: leave room for patch panels, host servers, power-distribution units, optical bend-radius compliance and technicians working at the rear.

Confirm mechanical details with the vendor

  • Rack height in U, cabinet depth and door swing.
  • Static and rolling weight, including shipping frames and auxiliary equipment.
  • Front and rear service clearances and whether a rack must be removed for major service.
  • Minimum fiber bend radius and the allowed location of optical patch panels.
  • Floor loading at casters, leveling feet and any cryogenic skid or plant module.
  • Clearance to overhead trays, fire suppression hardware and neighboring hot-aisle equipment.

Electrical infrastructure and power distribution

Size for the whole installation

Provide monitored, redundant rack power sized for the QPU, control electronics, host servers, network switches, pumps and any vendor-supplied auxiliaries. Do not reserve capacity from the processor’s headline number alone. Ask for separate steady-state, startup, peak and inrush values, plus the acceptable voltage, phase, frequency and connector types.

For an ORCA PT Series planning exercise, 6 kW is the published system figure. The OCP photonics reference row’s approximately 3 kW environmental-power value should be recorded as a separate reference, with its source and configuration, rather than averaged into a new estimate. If the vendor cannot reconcile a difference, design to the higher documented requirement until the site-acceptance specification is signed.

Build resilience into the feed

  • Use dual power-distribution paths when the vendor supports redundant inputs.
  • Connect rack power to branch circuits with metering so operations can distinguish QPU load from hosts and cooling auxiliaries.
  • Coordinate UPS ride-through and generator behavior with laser, timing and control electronics; an abrupt interruption may require a controlled restart even if no hardware is damaged.
  • Document breaker ratings, receptacles, grounding and bonding, and the vendor’s requirements for clean power.
  • Trend voltage, current and temperature telemetry in the same monitoring system used for other critical IT equipment.

Cooling and heat rejection

Room-temperature systems

A room-temperature photonic rack can normally be evaluated against the data center’s existing air- or liquid-cooling envelope. Confirm the rack’s total heat load, allowable inlet temperature, humidity range, airflow direction and maximum outlet temperature. The published ORCA and OCP numbers describe specific configurations; they do not establish a standard heat load for all photonic processors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether host GPUs, laser sources, pumps or control servers are included in the vendor’s thermal number. If they are separate, add them to the row’s heat-rejection budget and to the room’s overall cooling calculation.

Cryogenic systems

PsiQuantum’s design circulates liquid helium through a cryogenically cooled copper backplane. Its announced Brisbane project includes a dedicated cryoplant with Linde Engineering. Such a site needs helium supply and return infrastructure, cryoplant compressors and heat exchangers, control cabinets, ventilation, alarms, maintenance access and mechanical and electrical plant space.

PsiQuantum publishes approximately 30 W of cooling power per cabinet on its technology material. That is a cooling-capacity figure at the stated operating condition, not a 30 W facility-power promise. The public information does not provide a complete bill of materials or total megawatt demand, so a data-center owner should not use the 30 W value to size utility service.

Optical-fiber networking between racks

Photonic systems commonly use standard telecom optical fiber, but “standard fiber” is not a sufficient cabling specification. The vendor must define the fiber mode, operating wavelength, connector type and polish, insertion-loss and return-loss limits, maximum length, splice policy, cleaning procedure and patch-panel topology.

Xanadu reported 13 km of fiber across the four racks in its Aurora demonstration. That is a demonstration-specific total, not a required distance for every installation, but it shows why route length and loss budgets belong in the design review. PsiQuantum likewise says its architecture uses standard telecom optical fiber already deployed in conventional data centers.

Design the fiber plant

  1. Map every optical path between photonic modules, rack patch panels, switches and classical-control equipment.
  2. Calculate the loss budget, including connectors, splices, patch panels, wavelength-dependent loss and planned growth.
  3. Choose cable construction and connector polish from the vendor’s approved list; do not substitute a visually similar patch lead.
  4. Keep bend radius, polarity, labeling and separation from high-power electrical cables within the installation specification.
  5. Provide inspection and cleaning procedures, spare lengths and test access before the QPU is delivered.

Classical control, host servers and orchestration

A photonic QPU is not a standalone replacement for a data-center cluster. It depends on classical electronics for laser and detector control, timing, calibration, error handling, telemetry and job submission. Plan host servers, management switches, timing references, storage for calibration data and a secure maintenance path.

ORCA documents operation alongside GPUs and integration with Slurm and NVIDIA CUDA-Q. In practice, the scheduler should expose the QPU as a managed resource, enforce maintenance reservations and prevent jobs from consuming a device undergoing calibration. CUDA-Q or another supported SDK then submits circuits through the vendor’s runtime while conventional CPU and GPU stages perform pre- and post-processing.

Network and software controls to specify

  • Separate production, management, telemetry and vendor-service networks, with only the required firewall flows.
  • Define time synchronization accuracy for coordinated lasers, detectors, control cards and host logs.
  • Export health, temperature, optical-power, vacuum or helium and calibration status to the facility monitoring platform where supported.
  • Record firmware, driver, SDK and scheduler versions in the change-management system.
  • Define who can access remote support, how credentials are rotated and how logs are retained.

Environmental conditions: vibration, magnetic fields, humidity and temperature

The OCP 2026 photonics example rates magnetic-field, vibration, humidity and temperature sensitivity low. ORCA says its stated platform needs no special vibration isolation, magnetic zoning or facility modifications beyond power and network connectivity. Those statements apply to the referenced platforms and conditions; they are not a waiver for every photonic design.

Validate the exact model against the proposed site. Free-space optical paths, unusually sensitive detectors, cryogenic compressors and nearby construction can create requirements absent from a compact room-temperature rack. Measure vibration and temperature stability if the vendor specifies limits, and keep environmental alarms tied to an orderly job-stop procedure.

What a cryogenic deployment adds to the facility

A utility-scale installation may require helium storage or recovery, supply and return lines, cryoplant compressors, cooling-water or heat-rejection loops, electrical switchgear, control systems, relief and ventilation provisions, fire and gas detection, and technician access around the plant. The plant may sit in a dedicated building or a segregated mechanical zone rather than in the white space.

Because the public specifications do not state a final total power demand or complete equipment list, the correct procurement document is a vendor-specific facility interface control document. It should identify every tie-in, normal and emergency operating mode, commissioning sequence, consumable, inspection interval and hazardous-energy isolation point.

Deployment process for a data-center team

  1. Freeze the platform definition. Record vendor, model, revision, number of racks, room-temperature or cryogenic operation, and all auxiliary cabinets.
  2. Perform a site survey. Check floor loading, route dimensions, rack rows, aisle clearances, power capacity, cooling headroom, fiber pathways and network ports.
  3. Obtain interface documents. Request mechanical drawings, electrical single-line requirements, thermal data, optical specifications, environmental limits, safety documentation and software dependencies.
  4. Approve the rack and plant layout. Show QPU cabinets, host servers, patch panels, PDUs, service clearances and, where applicable, cryoplant equipment and helium lines.
  5. Engineer power and heat rejection. Size redundant feeds and cooling for steady-state and peak conditions, then verify UPS, generator and alarm behavior.
  6. Install and certify fiber. Label both ends, inspect and clean connectors, test loss and return loss, and retain test results with the acceptance record.
  7. Integrate controls and scheduling. Configure management segmentation, time synchronization, telemetry, Slurm partitions and the supported SDK or CUDA-Q runtime.
  8. Commission under vendor supervision. Check startup, calibration, controlled shutdown, failover, environmental alarms and recovery after a power or network interruption.
  9. Hand over operations. Deliver runbooks for cleaning fiber, replacing modules, responding to alarms, managing firmware and escalating cryogenic or optical faults.

How to compare vendor infrastructure proposals

Decision axis Questions to put in writing
Operating temperature Is the processor room-temperature, cryogenic, or a mix of both? Which auxiliaries share that requirement?
Rack and mass How many U and kilograms per cabinet, including shipping and service equipment? What floor and seismic loads apply?
Power What are steady, peak, startup and redundant-feed requirements? Which published number covers environmental auxiliaries?
Cooling What heat must the room reject, and what plant, helium, water or ventilation interfaces are required?
Optics Which fiber mode, wavelength, connectors, loss budget, maximum length and patch-panel arrangement are approved?
Environment What vibration, magnetic, humidity and temperature limits are guaranteed for the supplied model?
Operations How are calibration, maintenance reservations, telemetry, Slurm, CUDA-Q and remote support handled?
Expansion What additional racks, fibers, electrical capacity and cooling plant are needed for the next system size?

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely infrastructure cause First corrective action
Optical link will not train or has high error rates Wrong mode, wavelength, connector polish, contamination or excessive route loss Inspect and clean every connector, verify the approved part number and retest end-to-end loss.
Rack trips during startup Inrush or auxiliary load was omitted from the branch-circuit calculation Compare measured startup current with the vendor’s peak requirement and rebalance or resize feeds.
QPU throttles or stops jobs Inlet temperature, airflow or plant cooling is outside limits Check rack airflow, blanking panels, room set points and auxiliary heat loads before restarting.
Calibration drifts after nearby construction Vibration or electromagnetic conditions changed Review environmental telemetry and vendor limits; isolate the source before adding shielding or isolation.
Scheduler accepts jobs during maintenance QPU health state is not connected to orchestration Drain the device in Slurm, expose calibration status through the runtime and add an operations runbook.
Cryogenic alarms or helium-pressure excursions Plant, supply/return, controls or safety interlock problem Follow the vendor’s emergency procedure, isolate the affected system and involve qualified cryogenic personnel.

What to include in the acceptance checklist

  • Rack dimensions, weight and floor-load sign-off.
  • Measured power under idle, nominal and peak workloads.
  • Cooling performance at the specified inlet conditions.
  • Fiber inspection records and certified loss measurements.
  • Network segmentation, time synchronization and remote-access approval.
  • Successful Slurm and CUDA-Q job submission, cancellation and maintenance drain.
  • Alarm, controlled-shutdown and recovery tests.
  • Vendor contact, spare-parts list, firmware baseline and maintenance schedule.

The practical conclusion is straightforward: a room-temperature photonic QPU can fit the operating model of a conventional data center, while a cryogenic, utility-scale machine requires a dedicated mechanical and electrical program. Treat rack, power, cooling, fiber and classical orchestration as one engineered system, and require the vendor to certify every interface before installation.
