Short answer: Biosensor companies may collect far more than the number shown on a wearable or medical sensor. Depending on the product and your relationship with the company, the data can include raw physiological readings, calculated scores and health inferences, account and device identifiers, app activity, information you type in, and data imported from other services. Companies say they use it to operate the service, generate personalized insights, provide support, improve products, develop analytics or AI features, and enable integrations. Whether data is shared, sold, deleted, or protected by health-privacy laws depends on the product, country, consent and legal context.
The only reliable way to know what applies to you is to read the privacy notice for the exact device and app, check its effective date and jurisdiction, and review the permissions and connected services in your account. Policies from Oura, Dexcom, Abbott and Apple illustrate the range of practices without establishing an industry-wide average.
What counts as biosensor data?
A biosensor is a device or software system that detects a biological signal and turns it into a measurement. A glucose sensor, heart-rate monitor, sleep ring, pulse oximeter or fitness wearable can record a signal, but the company may also process information around that signal.
Raw and processed measurements
Raw inputs can include heart rate, heart-rate variability, body temperature, glucose, oxygen saturation, movement, sleep periods, activity, exercise, calories burned, weight and body mass. The exact list varies by sensor and by the features you enable. A company can store the reading itself, timestamps, device status and quality indicators, or transform the signal into summaries such as a daily score.

Scores, predictions and health inferences
Algorithms can combine measurements with your history, profile and behavior to produce a result that was never directly sensed. Oura describes personalized readiness, sleep and activity insights and inferences about health status. Abbott’s consumer-health policy expressly includes health information inferred or derived by algorithms or machine learning. A “readiness” score is therefore not merely a neutral display of a sensor value; it can be treated as health-related information about you.
Information surrounding the sensor
Policies can also cover your name, contact details, age or other demographic information, account credentials, device and advertising identifiers, IP address, technical logs, app interactions, customer-service records, payment or commercial details, professional or educational information, and location. Dexcom’s policy lists identity and contact, demographic, technical, audio/video, health, commercial and financial, professional and educational, and de-identified categories. The app may therefore know who you are and how you use it even when a particular session contains no new physiological reading.
Information you provide or import
Users may enter symptoms, meals, hydration, medication or notes, answer questionnaires, join a program, contact support, or participate in a clinical trial. A company may also receive information from a connected device, health app, account profile or another partner when you give permission. Abbott says information can come from users through services, events, programs, clinical trials or customer service, or from another source such as a connected device or profile with permission.

How companies use the information
Running the product you requested
The primary purpose is service delivery: synchronizing a sensor, displaying history, calculating a score, sending alerts, authenticating your account, processing a subscription, and keeping the app and cloud service functioning. Apple says consumer health personal data may be used as reasonably necessary to provide requested products and features, communicate with users, or comply with law.
Personalization and recommendations
Historical readings and user-entered context allow a service to tailor dashboards, notifications and explanations. Oura describes personalized readiness, sleep and activity insights. Personalization may require retaining a longitudinal record rather than only the latest reading, because the algorithm needs a baseline against which to compare changes.

Support, safety and troubleshooting
Technical logs and account information can help diagnose a failed sync, replace a device, investigate an alert or answer a support request. Support staff or contractors may need limited access to the relevant account and sensor history. The applicable notice should explain which service providers can process information for these operational tasks.
Improvement, analytics and AI
Companies describe using data to analyze performance, improve products and services, and develop new features. Depending on the policy, that can include testing algorithms, evaluating reliability, creating aggregated or de-identified datasets, and developing AI-enabled functions. “De-identified” does not mean the same thing as deleting your account; it means the company says it has removed or transformed identifying elements under the rules it follows. Read the policy’s definition and re-identification limits before assuming a dataset can never be linked back to you.

Oura lists marketing among its processing purposes. Marketing can involve communicating about the service, measuring campaign performance or presenting offers. Consent and opt-out choices may differ for marketing messages, targeted advertising and essential service communications, so check each control separately.
What may be shared, and with whom?
Service providers and affiliates
A company can use cloud hosting, analytics, customer-support, payment, security or communications vendors. Oura states that it shares personal data with trusted service providers and partners to provide and improve services, provide partner services and offerings, and operate its business. Its policy says: “Oura does not sell or rent your personal information, and only shares your personal data with certain trusted service providers and partners so that we can provide and improve our services, to provide partner services and other offerings, and to operate our business.” This is Oura’s description of its own practices, not a promise that every biosensor company follows the same model.
User-selected integrations
Health platforms can exchange data when you enable an integration. Oura describes connections such as Apple HealthKit and Google Health Connect and says integrations occur when users choose them or provide the required consent. Dexcom similarly describes optional HealthKit and Health Connect integrations and says authorization can be changed or revoked.

Dexcom names possible imported or exported categories including nutrition or food-diary entries, hydration, sleep, heart rate and variability, body temperature, activity, exercise, calories burned, weight and body mass. Its policy says data received from Google APIs is handled under Google’s Limited Use requirements and that Dexcom will not sell Health Connect data to third parties. The service receiving data has its own privacy practices; directing Oura or Dexcom to transfer information does not make the recipient subject to the sender’s policy.
Recipients chosen by you, providers and employers
Apple says it may disclose health data to recipients chosen by the user, affiliates, service providers, others needed to provide a requested feature, or when law requires. A device supplied through a healthcare provider, employer or insurer can involve a different account relationship and notice than a device purchased directly by a consumer. Check which company entity controls the account and whether a provider or employer receives reports.
Legal disclosures
Policies generally reserve the ability to disclose information when required by law, legal process or an urgent safety obligation. The notice should identify the circumstances and any limits, but the exact rule depends on the country and the type of information.
Does HIPAA protect data from a health ring or glucose sensor?
Not automatically. HIPAA applies to covered entities and business associates in defined healthcare contexts, not to every consumer app that handles health information.
Direct-to-consumer services
Oura says it is generally not a HIPAA covered entity for its direct-to-consumer services. It also says that when you direct a covered entity or business associate to send records to Oura through a patient-directed disclosure or HIPAA authorization, those records no longer fall under HIPAA while in Oura’s possession. That is Oura’s stated position and should not be generalized to another product.

Provider-supplied or reimbursed care
Dexcom maintains separate notices for certain US patient protected health information and for consumer health data. Its Washington and Nevada notice says it does not cover certain HIPAA-governed information processed through specified products when those products are supplied through a provider and reimbursed by US insurance. The same notice defines consumer health data as personal information linked or reasonably linkable to a person that identifies past, present or future physical or mental health status. It is limited to the laws and products it addresses, not a complete statement of protection for every Dexcom user or every biosensor.
Other privacy laws and company policies
State, national and regional privacy laws may grant access, correction, deletion, portability, restriction or opt-out rights even when HIPAA does not apply. The rights, exemptions and response deadlines depend on your location and the company’s role. Treat the product’s privacy notice and the law in your jurisdiction as separate questions.
How four policies illustrate the differences
The following comparison uses the companies’ published policy descriptions. It is not an independent audit, and a policy can differ by product, country, account type and feature.
| Company | Examples of data or inferences | Stated uses and sharing | Controls or legal context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oura | Ring and app data; readiness, sleep and activity insights; health-status inferences; information from users and partners | Service delivery, support, improvement, analysis, marketing and integrations such as HealthKit and Health Connect | Integrations require user choice or consent; states it does not sell or rent personal information; generally not a HIPAA covered entity for direct-to-consumer services |
| Dexcom | Health, identity/contact, demographic, technical, audio/video, commercial/financial, professional/educational and de-identified categories; optional imported wellness data | Product operation and optional HealthKit or Health Connect integrations; Google API data subject to Limited Use requirements | Authorization can be changed or revoked; separate US notices cover certain HIPAA and consumer-health contexts; says it will not sell Health Connect data to third parties |
| Abbott | Conditions, treatment, diagnoses, medication, bodily functions, vital signs, symptoms, reproductive or sexual health, biometrics, precise health-related location and algorithmic inferences | Information supplied through services, programs, trials, support or permitted connected sources | Policy describes rights to confirm, access, copy, amend, delete or withdraw consent, subject to exceptions |
| Apple | Conditions, symptoms, diagnoses, testing or treatment, bodily-function and vital-sign measurements, care-seeking indicators and inferred health status | Requested features, communications, legal compliance, affiliates, service providers and user-selected recipients | Describes minimization, on-device processing, transparency, security and Health-app controls; policy updated March 31, 2024; says it does not sell consumer health personal data |
What to compare before enabling a biosensor
- Collected inputs: Identify whether the notice covers raw readings, derived scores, notes, imports, identifiers, location and app activity.
- Purposes: Separate essential operation from personalization, troubleshooting, analytics, AI development, research, marketing and partner recommendations.
- Recipients: Distinguish cloud and support vendors from optional integrations, affiliates, providers, employers and recipients you select.
- Permissions: Look for opt-in language, per-data-type toggles, export controls and a way to revoke an integration without deleting the whole account.
- Retention and deletion: Find how long account, backup, legal, billing and de-identified records remain after you close the account. Policies may allow exceptions.
- Legal role: Determine whether you are a direct consumer, a patient in a provider program, an employee participant or an insured user, and which entity acts as controller, covered entity or business associate.
- Policy version: Record the effective or updated date and revisit it after major app, device or jurisdiction changes.
How to reduce unnecessary collection
Review permissions at setup
Allow only the sensors, Health app categories, location services, contacts, microphone or camera features required for the function you intend to use. A permission can be useful for one feature but unnecessary for the rest of the app.
Limit integrations
Connect only services you trust and need. In the health platform’s settings, inspect both inbound and outbound categories. Revoke authorization when an integration is no longer needed; Dexcom says its authorization can be changed or revoked, and similar controls may be available elsewhere.

- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Separate optional profile details
Do not add a symptom diary, reproductive-health detail, location or demographic field merely to complete a profile unless the feature requires it. If you provide such information, assume it may be combined with sensor history to generate inferences.
Use account and privacy controls
Review marketing choices, download or export tools, connected-app lists and deletion requests. Keep a copy of records you need before requesting deletion, because deletion may be irreversible and legal, billing or security exceptions may apply.
Your practical rights checklist
- Ask the company to confirm whether it holds personal data about you.
- Request access or a copy in the format the policy provides.
- Request correction when an account detail or health record is inaccurate.
- Ask whether data is shared with a particular integration, provider, employer or service vendor.
- Withdraw consent or revoke a connection where the policy offers that control.
- Request deletion, while checking retention exceptions and the effect on your account or subscription.
- Use restriction, portability or objection rights where your jurisdiction provides them.
- Escalate to the privacy contact or regulator identified in the applicable notice if the response does not resolve the issue.
What policies cannot tell you by themselves
A privacy policy is a first-party description, not an independent audit or proof that every implementation matches the text. It may describe categories that are technically possible rather than data collected from every user. Collection and sharing can change by country, device model, app version, consent choice, subscription, provider relationship and legal role. No comparable portfolio-wide statistic establishes how much data biosensor companies collect across the industry.
For a meaningful answer, read the notice linked from the exact product, then compare its permissions screen, integration settings and deletion process. That combination tells you what the company says it may collect, what you have actually enabled and what control you have over the resulting record.
