Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are adult cells reprogrammed into a flexible, “pluripotent” state. Scientists can then guide them toward specialized cells for disease modeling, drug research and experimental cell or immune-cell therapies. That flexibility is a development platform—not proof that a treatment is safe, effective, approved or available to a particular patient.
Clinical studies of therapies made from pluripotent stem cells are underway. However, the evidence summarized through December 2024 does not establish an approved iPSC-derived treatment. Approval, if it exists, must always be checked for the exact product, disease and country.
What an iPSC is and why it matters
An induced pluripotent stem cell starts as an adult cell. Researchers reprogram it so it behaves like a pluripotent stem cell: a cell capable of being directed toward many specialized cell types. In principle, that lets a laboratory create disease-relevant cells or cells intended to replace or support damaged tissue.

The key word is directed. An iPSC does not automatically become the correct mature cell, organize itself into working tissue or repair a disease when injected into someone. Scientists must control reprogramming, differentiation, purification, formulation, dose, delivery and follow-up. Each step can affect whether the final product is useful and safe.

iPSCs are therefore best understood as a manufacturing and research platform. Their potential is broad, but the clinical claim belongs to the finished product and its evidence—not to the existence of iPSCs themselves.
What iPSCs can be used for today
Disease modeling with patient-derived cells
Researchers can create iPSC lines from a patient and direct them toward cell types involved in that person’s disease. Studying those cells can reveal disease biology, expose cellular mechanisms and allow investigators to test hypotheses in a relevant human-cell system. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describes this disease-modeling potential in its stem-cell research overview.
A model is not a patient treatment. A cell in a dish cannot reproduce every feature of a human body, and a result in one iPSC line may not apply to other patients or to a clinical dose. Models are most useful for generating and testing evidence before a therapy is tried in people.
Drug discovery and toxicity testing
Specialized cells made from iPSCs can be used to screen candidate medicines, compare disease and control cells, and investigate unwanted effects. This may help researchers select compounds or doses for further study. It does not by itself demonstrate that a medicine will work in a patient, because laboratory behavior, animal results and human outcomes can differ.
Experimental cell replacement
Scientists can attempt to differentiate iPSCs into cells intended to replace or support cells lost through disease or injury. This is the rationale behind several clinical-development programs, including work aimed at the eye and central nervous system. The intended cell type, delivery route, dose, survival, function and duration of benefit must be established for each product.

Cell replacement also creates a quality-control problem: the final preparation must contain the desired cells in a consistent state and limit unwanted cells. A promising cell type in a laboratory protocol is not the same thing as a proven replacement therapy.
Immune-cell therapies
iPSCs can be directed toward immune-cell types for possible cancer or autoimmune applications. Researchers are exploring whether standardized cells could be produced at scale and used as an “off-the-shelf” treatment. These uses remain under development; the possibility of making an immune cell does not establish benefit for any particular cancer, autoimmune disease or patient.
How a potential iPSC therapy moves toward patients
A credible program has to solve scientific, manufacturing and regulatory problems in sequence. The exact path differs by product and jurisdiction, but the practical questions are similar.
- Choose and characterize the starting cells. Developers document the source, identity and biological characteristics of the adult cells used to make an iPSC line.
- Reprogram and establish a cell line. The resulting cells must be checked for the expected pluripotent properties and for abnormalities that could affect later manufacturing.
- Differentiate toward the intended cell type. A protocol attempts to produce mature, functional target cells. It must also identify and control unwanted cell populations.
- Run quality and safety tests. Identity, purity, potency, genetic stability, sterility and other release criteria are tied to the particular product. A process that works for one line may not work for another.
- Generate preclinical evidence. Developers study distribution, function, toxicity and the possibility of inappropriate growth or other effects before or alongside authorization for human testing.
- Conduct an authorized clinical trial. Investigators define eligibility, dose, delivery, outcomes, adverse-event monitoring and follow-up. A trial tests a question; it does not guarantee benefit or eventual approval.
- Continue long-term surveillance. Pluripotent-cell-derived products can have lasting biological effects, so follow-up may be needed after the initial treatment period.
Where clinical development stood at the end of 2024
A review by Kirkeby, Main and Carpenter, published in Cell Stem Cell in 2025, counted the human pluripotent-stem-cell clinical landscape using data through December 2024:

These figures show that the field has reached human testing at meaningful scale. They do not show that every product works, that one product is interchangeable with another, or that an iPSC-derived therapy is routine care. The cited review does not provide disease-by-disease comparative efficacy results that would support ranking treatments from trial counts.

Are iPSC treatments approved?
Based on the sources summarized here, no approved iPSC-derived treatment is established. That statement should not be expanded into a worldwide claim that can never change: regulatory status depends on the product, indication and jurisdiction, and it can change as agencies review new evidence.

That category is not an approval of an iPSC product, and it is not a global inventory of stem-cell approvals.
When someone names a therapy, verify three things separately:
- Is the specific product approved by the relevant regulator?
- Is the approval for the exact disease, dose, route and patient group being discussed?
- If it is not approved, is it being offered through an authorized, independently reviewed clinical trial or another pathway permitted by local rules?
An approval for one cell line, manufacturing process or disease does not transfer automatically to a different product. The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) emphasizes that evidence and oversight must be tied to the particular intervention.
What iPSCs cannot be assumed to do
They are not automatic cures
The ability to make a cell associated with a disease does not prove that transplanting it will cure the disease. The cells may not survive, connect correctly, produce the needed function, reach the right tissue or produce a durable benefit.

A trial listing is not proof of effectiveness
A registered or authorized study means investigators are testing a product under a defined protocol. Early studies may primarily assess safety, dose or feasibility. Participation does not guarantee improvement, approval, access after the study or success for an individual participant.
Evidence cannot be transferred casually
Results from one iPSC line cannot be assumed to apply to another line, a different differentiation process, a different dose or delivery route, or a different disease. Autologous products made from a patient’s own cells and allogeneic products made from a donor or established line also raise different manufacturing and immune questions.
A commercial “stem-cell” offer is not necessarily an iPSC therapy
A clinic’s use of the phrase “stem cell” does not establish what cells are supplied, whether they are iPSC-derived, how they were manufactured or whether the intervention is authorized. FDA consumer guidance warns that illegally marketed regenerative-medicine products have been associated with serious harms. Those warnings concern illegally marketed regenerative products generally; they should not be read as proof that every harm has occurred in every iPSC trial.

Pluripotent cells can produce many cell types, and that versatility is also a risk if manufacturing is incomplete or poorly controlled.

ISSCR guidance describes potential risks including tumorigenesis, hyperplasia, migration, off-target effects and inappropriate integration. Its guidance recommends independent prospective review, ongoing monitoring and substantial evidence from well-designed studies before routine clinical use. It also says unproven stem-cell interventions should be limited to compliant clinical trials or medical innovation under applicable rules.

How to evaluate an iPSC claim before considering treatment
- Request the exact product name and cell type. “Stem cells” is too vague. Ask whether the product is actually derived from iPSCs and what cells it contains.
- Check the regulator and jurisdiction. Search the relevant national regulator for approval of that product for that exact condition. Do not treat approval in one country as approval elsewhere.
- Separate authorization from results. Ask whether the study is authorized and independently reviewed, what phase it is, how many participants are enrolled and what outcomes it measures.
- Examine follow-up duration. A short observation period cannot establish protection against delayed growth, migration, immune effects or loss of benefit.
- Ask about manufacturing controls. The provider should be able to explain identity, purity, potency, sterility, differentiation controls and how batches are released.
- Review costs and obligations carefully. A fee, travel requirement or waiver of standard care does not indicate efficacy. Be cautious if a provider promises a cure, guaranteed improvement or immediate access outside a regulated trial.
- Discuss alternatives with an independent clinician. A doctor who is not financially connected to the provider can help compare the proposed intervention with established care and legitimate trial options.
What patients should expect from a legitimate trial
A properly governed study explains its purpose, eligibility criteria, procedures, known and foreseeable risks, alternatives, compensation or costs, privacy arrangements and withdrawal rights. The consent form should make clear whether the study is primarily testing safety, dose, feasibility or effectiveness.
Trial participation is voluntary. Participants may receive an investigational product, a comparator or another protocol-defined intervention, depending on the study design. Even when a product has reached human testing, investigators may stop the study, change the protocol or conclude that the treatment does not provide enough benefit.
What would justify broader medical use
For iPSC-derived products to move from experimental use to routine care, developers need reproducible manufacturing, clear product identity, convincing evidence of function, acceptable short- and long-term safety, and well-designed clinical studies with meaningful outcomes. Regulators also need a basis for judging consistency between batches and for monitoring patients after approval.
