Implied volatility (IV) is the volatility value that an option-pricing model must use to reproduce an option’s current market premium. It represents the amount of price movement traders are pricing for the option’s remaining life, in either direction. IV is inferred from the option price; it is not directly observed, does not predict whether the stock will rise or fall, and does not guarantee the stock will move by any particular amount.
What implied volatility is
An option quote gives you a market premium. An option-pricing model then uses that premium, along with other contract and market inputs, to solve for the volatility assumption that makes the model match the quoted price. That solved-for assumption is implied volatility.
The Options Industry Council defines it as “the market’s prediction of expected volatility, calculated indirectly from current options prices using an option-pricing model.” The important words are calculated indirectly: there is no exchange-traded instrument that reports a stock’s one universal, directly measured future volatility. IV is backed out of the price of a particular option.

The model considers several inputs:
| Input | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Current underlying price | Changes the option’s relationship to its strike and therefore its modeled value. |
| Strike price | Determines the contract’s moneyness and its payoff conditions. |
| Time to expiration | Sets how long the option has for a favorable move to occur. |
| Interest rates | Influence the modeled present value of the option’s future cash flows. |
| Dividends | Can affect the expected path and value of the underlying during the contract’s life. |
| Market premium | The observed quote from which the implied volatility is solved. |
Because all of these inputs affect the premium, IV should always be attached to the specific strike, expiration and quote being examined. Saying that a stock “has” an IV without naming the contract is an incomplete statement.

What IV measures—and what it does not
It measures expected magnitude
Volatility describes the size of price fluctuations, not their sign. A higher IV means the option market is pricing a wider range of possible movement over the option’s remaining life. A large move upward and a large move downward both count as high volatility.
IV is commonly expressed as an annualized standard deviation of price changes. Annualization lets contracts with different maturities use a common convention, but an annualized percentage is not a promise that the stock will move by that percentage before expiration. It does not describe the path the stock will take, the timing of a move, or whether the final price will be above or below today’s price.
It does not forecast direction
Calls and puts on the same underlying can both become more expensive when IV rises. That would make no sense if IV were a simple bullish or bearish signal. Instead, it reflects greater uncertainty or a larger move being priced in either direction.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Directional information can appear elsewhere in an option chain—for example, through the underlying price, the strike selected, order flow or differences between calls and puts—but IV itself is a magnitude input. Treating a high IV as a prediction that a stock will fall, or a low IV as a prediction that it will rise, is a category error.
It is not realized volatility
Historical, or realized, volatility summarizes price changes that have already occurred. IV is inferred from current option prices and looks forward across the option’s remaining life. The two can diverge for long periods. Traders may price a future event, demand a risk premium, or simply quote options in a market where supply and demand differ from recent historical behavior.

How IV changes option premiums
Holding the other pricing inputs constant, higher IV generally raises both call and put premiums. Greater possible movement increases the chance that an option will finish with value, and it increases the option’s time value—the portion of the premium that reflects possibilities remaining before expiration.
The reverse is also true: a decline in IV generally reduces both call and put premiums, all else equal. “All else equal” is essential. The underlying price can move, time can pass, interest rates can change, dividends can be adjusted, and the quoted spread can change at the same time. The net change in your option’s market value is the result of those forces together.

For that reason, a correct IV reading does not by itself tell you whether a position made or lost money. A long call can lose value after a favorable upward move if the drop in IV and the passage of time outweigh the benefit of the stock move. A put can gain from a volatility increase even when the stock has not yet fallen, although the actual premium change depends on the contract and all other inputs.
Why IV often falls after earnings: the “IV crush”
Before an earnings announcement, investors face a known event with an uncertain outcome. Options can incorporate that uncertainty, causing IV to rise as the announcement approaches. Once the report is released, one major unknown has been resolved. The uncertainty that had been embedded in option prices can come out quickly, producing a sharp IV decline known as an IV crush.
An IV crush can reduce an option’s value even when the stock moves in the direction a trader expected. The final result depends on:

- the size of the stock’s move,
- the direction of that move relative to the position,
- how much IV falls after the event,
- time decay while the position is held, and
- the strike and expiration of the contract.
There is no universal post-earnings IV percentage or guaranteed “expected move” that applies to every stock. The relevant comparison is the option’s own price and IV before the event versus the price after the event, with the underlying move and remaining time considered at the same time.
Why one stock can show many different IV readings
Strike-dependent IV: skew and the volatility smile
Option chains commonly show different IVs at different strikes. The pattern may be called skew or a volatility smile. A far out-of-the-money put, an at-the-money call and a far out-of-the-money call can therefore carry materially different implied volatilities even though they reference the same stock and expire on the same date.
This happens because option demand, perceived tail risk and market-making costs are not identical at every strike. Comparing a 20% IV call with a 35% IV put without accounting for moneyness does not tell you which contract is “more volatile”; it mixes different contracts and different risks.
Expiration-dependent IV: the volatility term structure
IV also varies across expirations. Near-term options may include an imminent announcement and show elevated IV, while later expirations may spread that risk over a longer period. Alternatively, a longer-dated contract can carry the higher IV when investors are more concerned about a later risk.
Looking across expirations is called examining the volatility term structure. It answers a different question from comparing strikes: term structure concerns the time horizon, while skew concerns the strike or moneyness.

IV versus historical volatility and VIX
| Measure | What it represents | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Implied volatility | Volatility value inferred from a current option premium through a pricing model. | A specific strike and expiration, unless a platform constructs a broader summary. |
| Historical (realized) volatility | Observed variability in the underlying’s past price changes. | A chosen look-back period and calculation method. |
| VIX Index | An estimate of expected 30-day volatility for the S&P 500, derived from SPX option quotes. | A broad index measure, not an individual company’s option IV. |
Cboe describes VIX as an up-to-the-minute market estimate of expected S&P 500 volatility calculated from the midpoint of real-time SPX option bid/ask quotes. Its methodology combines information across strikes and uses expirations to create a constant 30-day measure. VIX therefore cannot be substituted for the IV shown on a single company’s option chain. A stock-specific contract has its own strike, expiration, liquidity and supply-and-demand effects.
How to decide whether IV is high or low
There is no universal IV threshold that labels an option expensive or cheap. A 40% reading may be ordinary for one underlying and unusual for another. Even for the same stock, the answer can change between an earnings week and a quiet month.
Use a comparison that matches your question:
- Match the contract. Compare the same underlying, a similar strike or moneyness, and a similar expiration. Otherwise, differences may simply reflect contract design.
- Check the underlying’s own history. Ask where the current IV sits relative to that stock’s previous readings for comparable maturities and market conditions. A high reading alone does not prove overpricing, and a low reading alone does not prove a bargain.
- Inspect the term structure. Compare nearby and later expirations to see whether a known event is concentrated in one horizon or spread across several.
- Inspect skew. Compare calls and puts at comparable distances from the current stock price rather than comparing arbitrary strikes.
- Identify the event or risk being priced. Earnings, regulatory decisions, product announcements and market stress can explain a temporary elevation in IV.
- Compare the premium as well as IV. IV is model-dependent; the actual dollars paid, bid/ask spread and time remaining determine the trade’s practical economics.
Finally, remember that IV is an expectation embedded in a price, not a promise. Future realized volatility can be higher or lower than the volatility that was priced.
A practical workflow for reading an option chain
- Record the quote. Note the underlying price, option type, strike, expiration, bid, ask and last trade. A stale last trade can be less useful than the current bid and ask.
- Locate the contract’s IV. Confirm that the platform is displaying IV for that exact strike and expiration, not a stock-level average or a different maturity.
- Check liquidity. Wide spreads make the inferred IV more sensitive to which quote is used. Treat a thinly traded contract cautiously.
- Compare like with like. Examine neighboring strikes for skew and nearby expirations for term structure. Keep the underlying and comparison date constant.
- Mark known events. Record earnings or other scheduled announcements that could explain a jump in near-term IV and a subsequent decline.
- Separate volatility from direction. Build your directional view independently; use IV to assess how much movement the option price is requiring, not which way the move should go.
- Recheck after the underlying moves. A change in stock price can alter moneyness and therefore the contract’s IV even if the broader volatility environment is unchanged.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Reading IV as a directional signal
High IV means larger movement is being priced, not a forecast of a decline. Use the option type and your own directional thesis separately.
Assuming IV is a guaranteed move by expiration
IV is annualized and model-based. It does not specify a guaranteed endpoint, a one-day move or a precise probability range without additional assumptions and a stated methodology.

Comparing mismatched contracts
Comparing a short-dated, out-of-the-money put with a long-dated, at-the-money call confounds expiration, strike and event exposure. Match those dimensions before drawing a conclusion.
Ignoring the earnings reset
An option bought before an announcement can lose value when IV falls afterward, even if the stock moves favorably. Include the expected volatility change in the position’s risk assessment.
Using VIX as a stock-specific IV
VIX describes expected 30-day S&P 500 volatility from SPX options. It is useful as a broad market indicator, but it is not the implied volatility of an individual company’s option.

IV must be compared with the contract’s own history, event calendar, term structure, skew, premium and quote quality. A high number can reflect a real upcoming risk; a low number can still be expensive if the option’s other inputs or spread are unfavorable.
What implied volatility can tell an options trader
Used correctly, IV answers a focused question: How much movement is the current option price requiring over this contract’s remaining life? It helps explain why premiums differ across strikes and expirations, why both calls and puts can reprice together, and why an option can lose value after a correctly anticipated event.
It cannot answer, by itself, whether the stock will rise or fall, whether the option will make money, or whether future realized volatility will match the market’s implied figure. Those judgments require the full contract context, the underlying’s behavior, the event calendar, time decay and the price actually paid.
