Humphry Davy’s notebooks are not one continuous diary. They are a varied archive of laboratory records, lecture notes, drafts, poetry, travel observations, lists and personal remarks. Read alongside their dates, purposes and authorship, they show how scientific work unfolded alongside public teaching, literary interests and the relationships and ambitions of Davy’s career.
What survives in the notebook collection?
The digitised collection includes 129 notebooks and individual sets of lecture notes. Lancaster Digital Collections describes records spanning experiments, geology, travel, poetry, personal philosophy, laboratory work and lecture preparation. The Royal Institution also highlights everyday traces such as reading and shopping lists, gossip, sporting pursuits, and notes about planned demonstrations.
The Davy Notebooks Project ran from 2019 to 2024. Its digital edition pairs searchable transcriptions with images of the manuscript pages. University College London reported in October 2024 that the project covered 13,000 pages and involved 3,841 volunteers in transcription. Those figures describe the project’s output and participants, not the number of separate notebooks.

What do the notebooks reveal about Davy’s work?
Science as a process, not just a published result
Laboratory records and drafts preserve research in progress: observations, plans and evolving ideas that a finished paper may not show. Project accounts point to notes on early experiments with nitrous oxide and pain relief, and to Davy’s consideration of “potarchium” and “sodarchium” as possible names for potassium and sodium. These are examples reported from the project; the proposed names were not adopted, and the notes should not be made to carry claims beyond what they record.
Authorship also matters. Lancaster’s collection description says some laboratory entries were written by Davy, others by Michael Faraday or William Thomas Brande, and some by unidentified hands. A passage in a notebook associated with Davy is not automatically in Davy’s own hand; attribution should follow the catalogue or manuscript evidence.

Public teaching and scientific performance
Lecture notes reveal Davy preparing to explain science to audiences, including by planning live demonstrations. They connect the laboratory to his public work at the Royal Institution and other venues: experiments were not only investigations, but also material that could be presented and made intelligible to others.

Poetry appears throughout the notebooks, sometimes alongside records of scientific exploration. This combination complicates any portrait of Davy as only an experimental chemist. The archive shows interests and forms of writing sharing space, though a notebook’s contents alone cannot tell us how central any one interest was in his life.

What do they show about Davy’s everyday and private life?
Lists, travel accounts, sporting references and health notes offer glimpses of routine and personal concerns. They are scattered traces in a working archive, not a complete account of private life or a guarantee that an entry captures Davy’s unguarded thoughts. Each passage needs to be read in light of its date, purpose and surrounding material.
The Royal Institution’s project director, Katherine Mathieson, described the manuscripts as preserving “the innermost thoughts” of Davy. That is institutional commentary, not proof that every page is a candid personal record: the collection mixes working notes, drafts and material by more than one writer.

How should readers interpret the evidence?
- Check the genre: a laboratory record, lecture plan, draft, list and diary-like observation each answer different questions.
- Check the writer: some records are collaborative or in other hands, so do not attribute every passage to Davy.
- Place it in time: connect an entry to Davy’s career and circumstances rather than treating it as a timeless statement of belief or character.
- Allow for gaps and mediation: the archive survives selectively, and digital transcriptions accompany images rather than replacing the manuscripts. Consult the image when wording or attribution matters.
Historical manuscripts can also preserve attitudes and stereotypes that are troubling today. Lancaster notes that some material concerning sex, gender and race is unedifying; such passages call for context, not sensationalism or erasure.
How do the notebooks fit into Davy’s career?
Davy was born in Penzance in 1778, joined the Royal Institution in 1801 and became its Professor of Chemistry in 1802. He used the electric battery to isolate sodium and potassium, later developed a form of miners’ safety lamp, became President of the Royal Society and died in Geneva in 1829. These milestones help place notebook entries about experiments, lectures, travel and professional relationships.

The safety lamp’s history is not a simple story of one inventor: Lancaster’s collection description notes a bitter priority dispute involving George Stephenson and William Reid Clanny. The wider lesson is that the notebooks belong to a history of collaboration, competing claims and later interpretation, as well as individual achievement.
Letters add another kind of evidence. The Royal Institution says its archives hold more than 200 of Davy’s letters, addressing subjects including electrochemistry, electromagnetism, mineralogy, geology, collaborators and controversies. The four-volume Collected Letters of Sir Humphry Davy, co-edited by Tim Fulford and Sharon Ruston, was published by Oxford University Press in 2020. The letters can help connect notebook records to people and disputes that a laboratory entry alone may not explain.
