HarmonyOS compatibility and update access depend on the exact Huawei device, its market region, the HarmonyOS release, and each individual app. There is no reliable “all Android apps work” or “no Android-origin apps work” rule. Before upgrading, use Huawei’s AppGallery upgrade-matching check for your installed apps, verify the precise model in Huawei’s upgrade interface, and confirm that the software platform on the device is still supported.
The current HarmonyOS 6.1 and HarmonyOS 7 rollout information cited by Huawei applies to mainland China. Overseas phones and tablets may have different eligibility, software, and update schedules.
What HarmonyOS compatibility actually involves
When someone asks whether a phone is “compatible with HarmonyOS,” three different questions are often being mixed together:

- Can this exact device install the new operating system? Eligibility is determined by the model, regional variant, rollout, and Huawei’s current upgrade list.
- Can I obtain my existing apps after upgrading? Huawei’s AppGallery upgrade-matching feature checks installed apps and shows which can be downloaded or installed after moving to HarmonyOS 5 or later.
- Will every feature of an app work? App availability does not guarantee feature parity. A critical banking, business, authentication, payment, media, or accessory workflow may require a particular app version or service.
Check these questions separately. A device can be eligible for an operating-system upgrade while a particular app is unavailable, or an app can be listed while a function you rely on is not supported.

Will my apps work on HarmonyOS?
Do not decide from an app’s reputation or its Android origins. Huawei’s documented method is an installed-app check through AppGallery, and the result is specific to the device and the upgrade being offered.
Check installed apps before upgrading
- Open Huawei’s AppGallery and use the HarmonyOS Easy Upgrade or upgrade-matching entry shown for your device.
- Review the installed-app results. Huawei says the feature identifies applications that may be downloaded or installed after upgrading to HarmonyOS 5 or a later release.
- Open the AppGallery listing for every app you depend on. Confirm that the listing is available for your device at the time you plan to upgrade.
- For critical work, verify the required function with the app publisher’s current listing or support information. The matching result is not a promise that every feature, plug-in, account integration, or peripheral will behave identically.
- Only after checking those apps should you accept the operating-system upgrade.
AppGallery’s result is a practical availability check, not a universal compatibility certificate. Catalogs and listings can change, so repeat the check immediately before upgrading rather than relying on an old screenshot or a general statement about HarmonyOS.
What a missing app means
If an installed app does not appear as obtainable after the proposed upgrade, treat that as a warning for your particular device and region. It does not prove that the app is unavailable on every HarmonyOS product, nor does it establish that every Android-origin app is blocked. Look for a current AppGallery listing, an officially supported alternative, or confirmation from the publisher before proceeding. If the app is essential and no supported path is shown, keeping the current software may be safer than upgrading first and investigating later.
Can I upgrade my Huawei phone to HarmonyOS 6.1 or 7?
Huawei’s current public rollout information is regional and model-specific. The cited HarmonyOS 6.1 and HarmonyOS 7 upgrade programs are for mainland China; they should not be generalized to overseas variants.
HarmonyOS 6.1
Huawei says the formal HarmonyOS 6.1 release was April 20, 2026. Its live eligible-model information includes HUAWEI Mate 70 and other phone models, but describes the list as a mainland-China plan. Huawei notes that more models may be added and that available features vary by device. The list is therefore a current rollout reference, not a permanent guarantee for every regional version of a named model.

HarmonyOS 7
Huawei says the HarmonyOS 7 launch event concluded on September 7, 2026. Its FAQ states that HarmonyOS 7 upgrades are currently taking place only in mainland China. For the older model families named in that FAQ, Huawei says it has not released relevant information about an upgrade.
Huawei Consumer Support uses the following wording for those older-model questions: “目前华为官方尚未发布相关信息，请持续关注官方后续发布的相关资讯，感谢您对HarmonyOS 7的关注与支持。” In English, Huawei says it has not yet released relevant information and asks users to follow later official announcements. That is an absence of an announced plan, not a promise that an upgrade will never happen.
Use the live eligibility interface
- On the phone, open My Huawei.
- Go to Upgrade early access (the wording can vary with the installed software and region).
- Check whether the exact model is offered for the relevant HarmonyOS release or trial.
- If the model is not shown, Huawei describes it as temporarily unsupported for that upgrade. The interface can change as additional models are added.
Check the model identifier and regional version rather than relying only on the retail name. Two phones sold under a similar name can have different rollout eligibility.
Does HarmonyOS support Android apps?
The useful answer is neither “yes, all of them” nor “no, none of them.” Huawei’s official guidance in this material does not establish a universal rule for every third-party app or every HarmonyOS device. Compatibility depends on the app listing, the device, the region, and the HarmonyOS version.
Think of app support in layers:
- Obtainability: AppGallery shows whether the app can be downloaded or installed after the upgrade.
- Installation: An app may install successfully but still require a supported account, service, or companion component.
- Functionality: The functions you need must be confirmed in the current listing or by the publisher. The sources do not promise feature parity for every app.
An app’s original Android heritage does not by itself answer any of these questions. Conversely, a large ecosystem count does not demonstrate that a named app is present on your particular phone.

What Huawei’s ecosystem figures do—and do not—tell you
Huawei reported more than 90 million HarmonyOS 6 and HarmonyOS 7 terminal devices as of September 28, 2026, defining that total as HarmonyOS phones, tablets, and PCs. Huawei also reported more than 450,000 obtainable apps and services across 18 categories on that date.
These are Huawei-reported aggregate figures, not independent counts. They indicate the scale Huawei describes, but they cannot answer whether your specific app is obtainable on your exact model, or whether its required functions are supported. Use the device-level AppGallery check for that decision.
Will my Huawei phone still get updates?
Support is version-specific. Huawei’s software-platform notice says technical support services, including software upgrades and updates, have ended for the following platforms on these effective dates:

Device-specific service can vary. Huawei also says that if a very serious security vulnerability occurs, it may provide a necessary security fix after support has ended, depending on the circumstances. That is an exception Huawei may make, not an ongoing update commitment. Do not treat an unsupported platform as if it were still receiving routine security maintenance.

- Identify the exact device and region. Record the model identifier and determine whether it is a mainland-China unit or an overseas variant.
- Check official eligibility. Use My Huawei’s Upgrade early access interface and the current Huawei model list for the release you are considering.
- Check essential apps. Run AppGallery’s upgrade matching and inspect every app needed for work, payments, communication, authentication, travel, media, and connected hardware.
- Check functions, not just names. Confirm the particular feature you need in the current app listing or with the publisher.
- Check support status. Compare the current HarmonyOS platform with Huawei’s published support notice. An upgrade may be more important when the existing platform is already out of support, but eligibility still has to be confirmed.
- Make a hardware decision if necessary. If the current phone is not eligible, compare a replacement’s local price, warranty, availability, hardware needs, and official update eligibility. Those factors vary by market and require current local information.
Common problems and what to do
Your model is absent from the upgrade screen
First verify the regional variant and model identifier. The cited 6.1 and 7 programs are mainland-China rollouts, and Huawei says the interface can expand as models are added. If the device remains absent, treat it as temporarily unsupported for that upgrade rather than forcing an unofficial installation.
An essential app is absent from upgrade matching
Do not assume sideloading or an Android label will preserve the app’s functions. Check AppGallery again close to the upgrade date and consult the publisher’s current support information. If there is no supported route, postpone the upgrade or plan a replacement that meets the app requirement.
The app installs but a required feature is missing
Installation only answers the obtainability question. Check the listing and publisher documentation for the missing function, then decide whether the limitation affects your workflow enough to keep the old system.
The phone stopped receiving routine updates
Check the installed HarmonyOS platform against Huawei’s end-of-support dates. A possible emergency fix for a severe vulnerability does not restore normal update coverage. For a security-sensitive device, factor the support status into the decision to retain or replace it.
What OpenHarmony means for future devices
Huawei’s HarmonyOS 7 FAQ says HarmonyOS 7 is based on OpenHarmony. That does not mean OpenHarmony’s open-source availability guarantees a HarmonyOS phone from another manufacturer. Whether another company launches an OpenHarmony-based phone is a commercial decision for that manufacturer. Treat announcements about the underlying project and actual retail-device support as separate questions.
