High permittivity means a ceramic dielectric can store more charge for the same electrode area and spacing. In practical component catalogs, the phrase usually refers to Class 2 ceramic capacitors such as X5R and X7R. They deliver large nominal capacitance in small multilayer packages, but their capacitance changes with temperature, applied DC voltage, frequency, and time. The value printed in a part number is therefore only a starting point: the capacitance available in your circuit may be substantially different.
What permittivity means inside a capacitor
Permittivity describes how readily an insulating material, called the dielectric, responds to an electric field. For a simple capacitor, capacitance is approximately:
C = εA/d
- C is capacitance.
- ε is the dielectric permittivity.
- A is the effective electrode area.
- d is the distance between electrodes.
With the same basic geometry, increasing the dielectric’s permittivity increases capacitance. A multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) exploits this relationship by stacking many thin ceramic layers and internal electrodes. A high-permittivity ceramic lets the manufacturer obtain useful capacitance without making the package physically large or the dielectric layers excessively thin.

“High permittivity” is therefore a materials description, not a promise that a capacitor will maintain its marked value under every operating condition. The electrical behavior still depends on the particular dielectric formulation, package, voltage rating, frequency, temperature, and age.

Which ceramic capacitors are considered high-permittivity?
Manufacturers commonly divide ceramic dielectrics into Class 1 and Class 2. Murata identifies the high-dielectric-constant family as Class 2 and describes barium titanate-based formulations in this group. X5R and X7R are familiar Class 2 designations.
Class 2 materials are engineered to produce much more capacitance in a given case size than Class 1 materials. The cost of that compact capacitance is greater dependence on operating conditions. A Class 1 C0G (also called NP0) capacitor uses a lower-loss, temperature-compensating dielectric and is usually selected when stability matters more than maximum capacitance per volume.
| Characteristic | Class 1 (C0G/NP0) | Class 2 (X5R/X7R and similar) |
|---|---|---|
| Relative capacitance in the same package | Lower | Much higher |
| Typical circuit role | RF matching, resonant networks, timing or tuning where stability is important | Bypass, smoothing and decoupling where compact capacitance is useful |
| Response to DC bias | Generally much smaller | Can be significant; consult the part’s bias curve |
| Temperature behavior | Designed for close temperature stability | More variation with temperature; the exact curve depends on the formulation |
| Time-dependent aging | Very low compared with Class 2 | Capacitance gradually changes with time |
These are family-level tendencies, not substitutes for a specific manufacturer’s data sheet. Two capacitors with the same nominal value and dielectric code can have different effective capacitance because their package, rated voltage, electrode design, and formulation differ.

A Class 2 MLCC’s nominal capacitance is normally measured under specified, relatively small-signal conditions. When a DC voltage is applied, the electric field inside the barium-titanate-based dielectric changes its polarization behavior. The result is a reduction in incremental capacitance, often called DC-bias derating.
The effect is most important when the capacitor’s rated voltage is much higher than the applied voltage but the package is very small. Designers often choose a small high-value MLCC to save board space, then discover that the part provides only a fraction of its marked capacitance at the circuit’s bias voltage. A capacitor marked 10 µF may not behave as a 10 µF capacitor once a supply rail is applied; the exact remaining value must come from the manufacturer’s DC-bias graph or table.

Voltage rating and effective capacitance are related but not interchangeable:
- Voltage rating is the maximum specified working voltage under the manufacturer’s conditions.
- DC-bias performance is the capacitance that remains at a particular applied voltage, often shown as a percentage of the nominal value.
- Choosing a higher-voltage part in the same case size can improve bias performance, but it may also reduce the available nominal capacitance or require a larger package.
For a decoupling design, calculate or verify the effective capacitance at the actual DC voltage, not just the value in the bill of materials. If the circuit needs a minimum amount of capacitance, include tolerance, DC-bias loss, temperature change, and aging in that budget.

X7R is an EIA Class II temperature designation. KYOCERA AVX specifies X7R capacitance variation within ±15% from -55°C to +125°C. That figure describes the temperature-related classification over the stated range; it is not an all-conditions accuracy guarantee.
The same capacitor can experience additional change from applied voltage and operating frequency. DC-bias derating can move the capacitance outside the temperature-only ±15% band, and long-term aging can reduce it further. The manufacturer’s test conditions and tolerances also apply.
Read an X7R code as an answer to one question: how much may capacitance vary with temperature over the specified temperature range? Do not read it as an assurance that the part remains within ±15% while simultaneously exposed to its full rated voltage, a particular signal frequency, and years of operation.

X5R is also a Class 2, high-permittivity dielectric family. Its exact temperature classification and the useful operating range are defined by the individual component specification. For either X5R or X7R, use the data sheet’s capacitance-versus-temperature and capacitance-versus-DC-bias information when the value is critical.
Temperature behavior is only one part of the specification
Temperature
Class 2 capacitance commonly decreases as temperature rises, although the curve can show more complicated behavior near the barium-titanate Curie region. TDK notes that manufacturers alter proprietary ceramic formulations to shape these curves. Consequently, a dielectric code identifies a classification, not an identical curve across all suppliers or capacitance values.
DC voltage
The DC electric field can produce a large capacitance reduction in high-value, small-package parts. Check the curve at the actual bias voltage, including the worst-case supply tolerance and any transient that leaves the capacitor charged.
Frequency and AC signal
Capacitance measurements depend on test frequency and signal level. A part that meets its nominal value at the catalog test frequency may have a different impedance and effective capacitance at a switching-converter frequency or in an RF network. Equivalent series resistance and inductance also affect how useful the component is at a particular frequency, even though those parameters are separate from permittivity.
Aging
Class 2 ceramics exhibit logarithmic aging: capacitance changes progressively with elapsed time after the material’s manufacturing or thermal history. The rate is normally specified by the manufacturer for the dielectric and part series. If a circuit depends on a stable time constant, filter corner, or tuned frequency, include the stated aging rate or use a Class 1 dielectric.

How to choose between C0G, X7R and other ceramic dielectrics
Use Class 1 when stability is the circuit’s primary requirement
C0G/NP0 is appropriate for resonant circuits, RF matching, precision filters, timing networks, and tuning elements where predictable capacitance is more important than maximum value. It generally provides lower capacitance in a comparable package, so achieving a large value may require a larger component or a different capacitor technology.
Use Class 2 when compact capacitance is the priority
X5R and X7R are common choices for supply bypassing, power-rail smoothing, and digital decoupling. They can provide tens of nanofarads through many microfarads in compact MLCC packages. Their variation is usually acceptable when the design has margin and the effective value has been checked at the operating point.
Do not select by dielectric code alone
Compare candidate parts on all of the following:
- Effective capacitance at the applied DC bias.
- Capacitance tolerance at delivery.
- Temperature range and temperature-related variation.
- Rated voltage, including derating required by your reliability rules.
- Operating frequency and impedance in the circuit.
- Package size, because the same nominal value can have different bias behavior in different cases.
- Aging specification for Class 2 parts.
- Mechanical conditions, including board flex and placement, when cracking risk matters.
A practical selection procedure
- Define the circuit function. Decide whether the capacitor is carrying a precision, resonant or tuning function, or whether it is providing bypass, smoothing or bulk decoupling.
- Set the required effective capacitance. State the minimum value the circuit needs at its operating frequency and temperature, rather than using only the nominal schematic value.
- Choose a dielectric family. Start with C0G/NP0 for stability-sensitive functions. Start with X5R or X7R when compact, high capacitance is the main objective.
- Check the exact DC-bias curve. Read the manufacturer’s capacitance-versus-voltage graph for the selected capacitance, package and rated voltage. Use the curve at the real DC operating point.
- Check temperature and aging. Confirm the part’s specified range and account for the capacitance shift over that range. For Class 2, include the stated aging behavior if the product must remain within a long-term limit.
- Verify frequency and tolerance. Confirm that the data-sheet test conditions resemble the circuit and that initial tolerance leaves enough margin.
- Review the physical package. A larger case or higher voltage rating may preserve more capacitance under bias, while a smaller case may have a larger derating. Confirm that the selected footprint and mechanical constraints are compatible.
- Validate the assembled circuit. Measure impedance or capacitance under representative bias and temperature when the design has little margin. A measurement made with the board unpowered cannot reveal DC-bias loss.
Worked design reasoning: a supply bypass capacitor
Suppose a power rail needs a minimum effective bypass capacitance at its normal DC voltage. A designer might begin with a small X7R MLCC because its nominal value fits the space. The correct next step is not to assume that the marked value is available. Instead, read the part’s DC-bias curve at the rail voltage, apply the initial tolerance, then check the temperature range and aging specification.
If the remaining capacitance is below the requirement, possible fixes include selecting a higher-voltage version, moving to a larger package, using multiple capacitors in parallel, or choosing a different capacitance value. Each option changes board area, cost, impedance, or bias behavior. The right answer depends on the circuit’s minimum capacitance and frequency range, not on the largest number printed on a catalog line.

Mistake: interpreting X7R’s ±15% as a total tolerance
Correction: apply the ±15% figure only to the specified temperature classification from -55°C to +125°C; evaluate voltage, frequency and aging separately.
Mistake: replacing C0G with X7R because both cover the needed temperature range
Correction: compare stability, DC-bias sensitivity, aging and circuit role. Similar temperature endpoints do not imply similar electrical behavior.
Mistake: assuming every part with the same code behaves identically
Correction: consult the exact manufacturer’s data for the selected capacitance, package and voltage rating. Proprietary Class 2 formulations produce different curves.
Mistake: choosing a generic assortment for production
Correction: use an identified part whose dielectric, capacitance, tolerance, voltage rating, package and bias data satisfy the design. An assortment can be useful for learning or prototyping, but it does not establish production performance.
The key distinction to remember
High permittivity explains why a ceramic capacitor can offer substantial capacitance in a small package. It does not explain the capacitor’s complete behavior by itself. Class 2 high-permittivity ceramics trade stability for capacitance density: temperature, DC voltage, frequency and time all influence the value your circuit actually receives. Class 1 C0G/NP0 sacrifices capacitance density to provide much greater stability.
Choose the dielectric according to the circuit function, then verify the individual part’s effective capacitance under its real voltage, temperature and frequency conditions. That is the difference between selecting a nominal value and designing with the capacitor you will actually have.
