The closest match for this headline is What Hi-Fi?’s 1 May 2026 “Pick of the Month” roundup, which reports seven five-star products from its April coverage. The named hi-fi speakers are the Acoustic Energy AE309 Mk2 and JBL Summit Ama; the two turntables are Sony’s PS-LX3BT and PS-LX5BT. The roundup does not identify a newly rated Rega turntable or name the affordable home-cinema product suggested by the headline, so neither can be confirmed from that article.

What the May 2026 roundup actually names

What Hi-Fi?’s roundup is a publication’s account of its own April reviews, not an independent tally of the wider market. It says seven products received five-star ratings. Among the products detailed in the available coverage are two speaker models and two Sony turntables. Read the roundup.

Acoustic Energy AE309 Mk2 floorstanders

What Hi-Fi? describes the AE309 Mk2 as a floorstanding sibling to the AE300 Mk2 standmount speakers; the AE300 Mk2 had previously earned five stars and a What Hi-Fi? Award. The roundup reproduces this verdict for the AE309 Mk2: “Those looking for compact and talented floorstanders should pay close attention to the Acoustic Energy AE309 Mk2 – their wonderfully balanced sound gives class leaders at this level a real run for their money.”

JBL Summit Ama standmount speakers

The Summit Ama is described as the smallest and only standmount model in JBL’s Summit series. What Hi-Fi? says it needs careful partnering and performs well with appropriately high-end equipment. Its reproduced verdict calls the speakers among the costliest standmounts the publication has reviewed, while praising their combination of insight, dynamic expression, finesse and ability to rock. The roundup gives them five stars.

Sony PS-LX3BT and PS-LX5BT turntables

The PS-LX3BT is presented as an entry-level, plug-and-play Bluetooth turntable with a built-in phono stage. What Hi-Fi?’s roundup lists publication-time prices of £299, $400 and AU$469, and gives it five stars. Its verdict describes it as an affordable, effective, easy-to-use and easy-to-recommend way to play records. Those are prices reported in the May 2026 article, not a guarantee of current pricing or availability.

The PS-LX5BT is the step-up model. At the prices reported in the same roundup, it cost £100, $100 or AU$150 more than the PS-LX3BT, depending on market. The article cites a step-up cartridge, a slightly different arm tube, mat and finish, and detachable interconnect cables. It also gives the PS-LX5BT five stars, saying its sonic improvement and versatile features can justify the extra cost for buyers seeking longer-term satisfaction.

How to choose between these speakers

A five-star rating does not settle whether a speaker suits your room or equipment. What Hi-Fi?’s floorstanding-speaker guide advises weighing budget and room size; a larger cabinet is not automatically the better choice. It also assesses build, ease of pairing with amplifiers and sources, and sound that is enjoyable, articulate, powerful and dynamic. See the floorstanding-speaker guide.

  • Room size: The guide says its Fyne Audio F501E overall pick is suited to buyers able to give it a larger room, while it describes the high-end PMC Prophecy 7 as suitable for modest-sized rooms.
  • Budget: The guide includes Wharfedale Diamond 12.3 among its affordable choices and discusses Q Acoustics 5050 in its premium section.
  • Amplifier matching: The guide gives the Q Acoustics 5050 a sensitivity rating of 91.8dB/W/m and says it can produce decent levels with budget amplifiers, while recommending more capable partners for the best results. That assessment applies to this model, not to every speaker.
  • Format and placement: The AE309 Mk2 is a floorstander; the JBL Summit Ama is a standmount. Consider the available space and setup before choosing between them.

What the Rega reference does—and does not—establish

The closest roundup names Sony, not Rega, as the maker of its two featured turntables. It compares the Sony PS-LX3BT with the Rega Planar 1 Plus and Pro-Ject Primary E, noting that vinyl purists may prefer paying more for the Rega. That comparison is not a new Rega review or rating.

Sony PSLX3BT Full Auto Playback Turntable with Bluetooth - Black
  • 1-Step Bluetooth Connection
  • Built-In Phono EQ Supports Phono And Line Out
  • Full Auto Playback

A separate What Hi-Fi? feature provides system context rather than evidence of a newly rated Rega model. It pairs a Rega Planar 1 with a Marantz PM6007 amplifier and Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 speakers, and describes a Planar 1 Plus with KEF LS50 Wireless II active speakers as a three-box setup. It also mentions the Planar 1 Plus’s integrated phono stage, as well as the Rega Planar 2, Pro-Ject Debut Pro and Rega Fono Mini A2D Mk2. Read the system feature. None of those details confirms that a new Rega turntable was rated in the May roundup.

Is the affordable home-cinema product identified?

No. The closest matching article’s title mentions a “shining star OLED TV,” but the available review details do not identify a particular affordable home-cinema product or establish which item the assignment’s phrase “affordable five-star treat for home cinema fans” refers to. It would be misleading to assign that description a model or rating based on the speaker and turntable details alone.
