HDR means high dynamic range. It describes how a television and video signal reproduce bright highlights, dark details, contrast and color. 4K (or UHD) describes resolution—the number of pixels in the image. They are separate capabilities: a program can be 4K without HDR, HDR without 4K, or both.

Use HDR when the movie, show, broadcast or game is actually supplied in an HDR format and every part of the playback path supports it. In a working setup, the TV and source normally detect the format automatically. If HDR is unavailable, check the title, source settings, HDMI path and TV input before buying accessories or forcing a picture mode.

HDR and 4K answer different questions

Resolution tells you how much fine detail an image can contain. A 4K television has a UHD pixel grid, so a compatible 4K signal can show more detail than a lower-resolution signal viewed at the same size and distance.

HDR tells you how the image represents light and color within those pixels. It allows a compatible signal to describe a broader range from deep shadow to bright highlight, with more deliberate color information. The television still has physical limits, so it converts the signal to what its panel, backlight or self-emitting pixels can display. That conversion is commonly called tone mapping.

Neither feature guarantees the other. A 4K SDR title remains SDR, and an HDR title can be delivered at a resolution other than 4K. Much HDR programming is also 4K, which is why the labels often appear together, but “4K” on a program guide is not proof that HDR is included.

What changes when HDR is active

With an HDR signal, the TV receives instructions for a larger brightness and color range than standard dynamic range (SDR) content uses. A night scene may retain detail in dark areas while a lamp, reflection or sky remains visibly brighter. The result depends on the display’s capability, its picture settings and the mastering of the particular program.

HDR is not a universal “make everything brighter” switch. A television may deliberately keep most of an image relatively dark while reserving extra brightness for highlights. In a bright room, reflections and ambient light can reduce the perceived effect. Two TVs receiving the same HDR signal can therefore look different, and an HDR badge does not promise a particular brightness level.

HDR formats you may encounter

HDR is a family of formats rather than one single standard. The content and playback equipment must agree on the format being used.

Format How it handles metadata Where it is commonly encountered What to check
HDR10 Static metadata describes the program as a whole. The broadly supported baseline HDR format for many discs, streams and games. Confirm that the TV, player or console and the title support HDR10.
HDR10+ Dynamic metadata can vary instructions during a program. Supported titles and televisions that implement HDR10+. Support varies by model, app, player and title; a TV that supports HDR10 does not automatically support HDR10+.
Dolby Vision Dynamic metadata can provide scene-by-scene or frame-level guidance. Compatible streaming titles, discs and external players. The TV, source device, service or disc and the HDMI path must all support Dolby Vision. Access to some services or tiers can vary.
HLG A broadcast-oriented HDR approach designed for television transmission. Supported live or recorded broadcast programming. The broadcast, tuner or set-top box and TV must support HLG.

Dolby describes HDR as “an umbrella term for a number of implementations, including HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision.” Format names describe signal handling, not a guarantee that one format always looks better. The display, calibration, viewing conditions and individual program remain important.

The complete HDR playback chain

HDR works only when the relevant capability survives the entire route from the program to the screen. Check these links in order:

  1. Program: Verify that the exact movie, episode, broadcast or game is offered in HDR. A service may show separate badges for 4K, HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision.
  2. Service or physical media: Confirm that your subscription tier, disc edition or broadcast feed includes the format. Availability can differ by region, title and plan.
  3. Source device: A smart-TV app, streaming box, disc player, console or computer must output the format. Review its video or display settings and enable HDR output when an automatic option is available.
  4. Connection: The HDMI port and cable must carry the selected resolution, frame rate and HDR mode. Some TVs expose enhanced or high-bandwidth behavior separately for each input.
  5. Television: The panel and firmware must support the format. Select the input used by the source and check the TV’s signal-information screen.

Modern playback devices generally perform HDR detection and tone mapping automatically, but menu names and behavior vary. Automatic detection is preferable to forcing a format that the content does not use.

When you should use HDR

HDR movies and shows

Use the HDR mode supplied with a compatible title. Start playback and look for the TV’s on-screen HDR, HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision indication. If the title is available only in SDR, leave the TV in its normal SDR mode rather than trying to manufacture HDR.

Games

Enable HDR in the console or computer only when the game, display and connection support it. Many systems include a calibration screen; follow it so the darkest logo or symbol is barely visible and bright details remain distinct. Game HDR settings are separate from the TV’s input label, so check both.

Broadcast television

HLG is the format most associated with broadcast HDR. It appears only when the broadcaster and your tuner, set-top box or app deliver an HLG signal. Ordinary channels remain SDR even on a 4K TV.

SDR content

Keep SDR content in SDR unless you have a deliberate artistic reason to use an optional conversion mode. Such modes reinterpret the signal and can alter brightness, color or skin tones. They do not add detail that was absent from the original program.

  1. Open the title, game or broadcast information and confirm the advertised HDR format, not just the 4K label.
  2. On the source device, open display or video output settings. Choose automatic or enabled HDR output, and select the supported resolution and frame rate.
  3. Connect the source to the TV input specified for high-bandwidth or HDR signals, if the manufacturer identifies one. Some models require an “enhanced,” “deep color” or similar input option to be enabled.
  4. Start the content and open the TV’s picture or signal-information panel. Look for an HDR status, input signal details or format badge.
  5. If the TV detects HDR, choose the HDR picture preset that the set applies automatically, then adjust only settings you understand. If it does not detect HDR, continue with the troubleshooting checks below.

Indicators are model-specific. One manufacturer may show a temporary badge while another places the information in a status menu, so instructions for one model family should not be treated as universal.

Why a 4K TV may say HDR is unavailable

The title is 4K but SDR

Check the exact episode, movie edition or game description. Catalog labels can separate 4K and HDR, and a 4K badge alone does not establish HDR.

The service plan or region does not include the format

Some services restrict Dolby Vision or other HDR formats by subscription tier, geography or device. Confirm the entitlement for the account and the specific title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The source is outputting SDR

Open the player, console or computer’s display settings and choose automatic HDR or enable HDR output. A source can be connected to an HDR-capable TV while still sending SDR.

The HDMI input or cable is the bottleneck

Try the TV input identified in its specifications, then check whether the cable and port support the chosen resolution, frame rate and HDR mode. A path that handles 4K at one frame rate may not handle a higher frame rate.

A format mismatch exists

For Dolby Vision, every relevant device in the path must support Dolby Vision. A television that supports HDR10 is not automatically a Dolby Vision television. The same principle applies to HDR10+ and HLG.

The TV is displaying the wrong status

Stop and restart playback after changing settings, test a known HDR title, and inspect the TV’s live signal-information screen. If only one app fails while another HDR source works, the problem is more likely the app, account or source configuration than the panel.

Do you need a special HDMI cable?

Not by default. A cable is a troubleshooting accessory, not a guaranteed picture upgrade. If HDR already works at the required resolution and frame rate, replacing the cable will not make the image inherently better.

Older cables can fail to carry 4K HDR between particular devices, especially when a higher frame rate is involved. Dolby’s guidance gives different cable-capability examples for 4K HDR at 60 frames per second and 120 frames per second; the correct requirement depends on the actual source, TV port, resolution, frame rate and features being used.

Before replacing a cable:

  • Read the video-output specifications for the source and the input specifications for the TV.
  • Check the cable’s stated bandwidth or supported 4K HDR frame rate.
  • Test a direct connection without an older receiver, switch or splitter in the middle.
  • Replace the cable only if the existing path cannot meet those specifications or causes dropouts, black screens or loss of HDR detection.

Searching for a “4K HDR compatible HDMI cable” is sensible only when you have identified a specific connection problem. Do not buy one solely because the television has an HDR logo.

Picture-setting pitfalls

Do not force Dolby Vision onto HDR10

Dolby warns that applying Dolby Vision settings to ordinary HDR10 content can produce inaccurate brightness and color. Let the TV and source select the format that the content actually carries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse a vivid preset with HDR

A “Vivid,” “Dynamic” or similarly named picture preset can increase contrast or saturation while the input remains SDR. Check the signal status rather than judging the mode name.

Allow for room lighting

HDR highlight detail is easiest to appreciate when reflections are controlled and the screen is not overwhelmed by direct light. This is a viewing-condition issue, not proof that HDR is malfunctioning.

Keep source and TV settings consistent

Changing the TV’s brightness, contrast, color temperature or tone-mapping option can alter the result without changing the incoming format. Make one change at a time and return to the default HDR preset if the picture becomes clipped, gray or unnaturally colored.

Practical decisions at a glance

Situation What to do What not to assume
A title is marked 4K HDR Play it with automatic HDR detection enabled and verify the TV’s status indicator. Do not assume every 4K title in the catalog is HDR.
A title is marked Dolby Vision Confirm the TV, source, app or disc and HDMI path support Dolby Vision. Do not assume an HDR10-capable TV can decode Dolby Vision.
A live channel advertises HDR Check that the broadcast path supports HLG and that the tuner or box passes it through. Do not assume all channels from the same broadcaster use HLG.
HDR disappears at 120 frames per second Check the port, cable and source specifications for that resolution and frame rate combination. Do not assume a cable that works at 60 frames per second has the same headroom at 120.
SDR looks wrong after changing settings Return the source and TV to automatic format selection and the normal SDR picture preset. Do not force Dolby Vision or another HDR mode onto SDR material.

What to verify before choosing a TV

If HDR support is a buying requirement, compare the specific model’s format list rather than relying on a generic “4K HDR” label. Check whether it accepts HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG, and note which HDMI inputs support the desired resolution and frame rate. Also confirm that the apps or external devices you plan to use offer the formats you want.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Format support is only one part of the experience. Panel performance, peak and sustained brightness, black-level behavior, viewing angle, reflections and factory settings influence how convincing HDR appears. Without independent measurements for the exact model, a format badge cannot predict the visible result.

The bottom line

HDR is about the range and appearance of light, dark and color; 4K is about pixel resolution. Use HDR for content that is supplied in a supported HDR format, let the TV and source negotiate it automatically, and troubleshoot the entire chain when the HDR indicator does not appear. Verify the title, plan, device, HDMI port, cable, frame rate and TV support before forcing settings or buying a replacement cable.
