For Apple TV 4K, use a reliable HDMI cable and connect it to a television HDMI input. A 4K HDR television should use a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable; Apple recommends looking for the “Compatible Dolby Vision” mark. The TV should support 4K resolution, the HDR formats you want, and the appropriate refresh rate. Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG, but the television and every device between the Apple TV and display must support the format you select.

You do not need HDMI 2.1 solely to watch 4K HDR. Apple describes an HDMI 2.0-or-later-compatible cable as sufficient for 4K HDR, while HDMI 2.1 provides access to all Apple TV features. In practice, an Ultra High Speed cable with Dolby Vision compatibility is the safest choice for a current 4K HDR setup.

What cable should you buy?

The cable requirement depends on the picture formats your television can display. Every Apple TV 4K installation needs an HDMI cable, but an older cable may not reliably carry 4K HDR. For a 4K HDR television, Apple specifies a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Apple also recommends cables carrying the “Compatible Dolby Vision” mark because those cables have been tested with Apple TV 4K and a wide range of televisions.

HDMI 2.0 versus HDMI 2.1

Apple’s setup guidance distinguishes capability rather than requiring one connector number in every situation. An HDMI 2.0-or-later-compatible cable is described as sufficient for 4K HDR. HDMI 2.1 is described as providing access to all Apple TV features. Therefore, HDMI 2.1 is not a prerequisite for basic 4K HDR playback, but an Ultra High Speed cable is the sensible choice when you want the broadest compatibility with current formats and future equipment.

Use case Cable guidance What to verify
1080p or standard-dynamic-range television A functioning HDMI cable is generally adequate for the display’s supported format. The cable and TV must still establish a stable HDMI connection.
4K HDR television Use a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Check for 4K HDR support and, preferably, the “Compatible Dolby Vision” mark.
Dolby Vision, HDR10+ or maximum Apple TV feature coverage Choose an Ultra High Speed cable and avoid unverified legacy cables. Confirm that the television, receiver or soundbar, and HDMI inputs support the same formats.
Long, concealed or in-wall cable run Use a cable specifically rated for the length and installation method. Test the complete run before closing walls or securing furniture; longer runs are less tolerant of marginal signal quality.

Do not choose solely by a brand name or by a claim that a cable is expensive. The useful evidence is its format compatibility, Ultra High Speed certification or equivalent labeling, Dolby Vision compatibility marking, length rating and suitability for the installation. Apple names the Belkin Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable as an example, but the requirement is the cable’s tested capability, not that particular brand.

Why the cable label matters

A cable can fit the HDMI socket and still fail when the Apple TV switches to 4K, HDR or Dolby Vision. A marginal cable may produce a black screen, intermittent sparkles, dropouts or a picture that falls back to a lower format. The “Compatible Dolby Vision” mark is useful because Apple says those cables were tested with Apple TV 4K and a broad range of TVs. It is not a guarantee that every television setting is correct, nor does it compensate for a receiver, switch or soundbar that cannot pass the signal.

Which TV features are required?

The minimum requirement is a television or display with an HDMI input. To obtain 4K output, it must support 4K resolution, which Apple defines as 3840 × 2160 pixels. To see HDR, the television must support the specific HDR format sent by Apple TV. A set advertised only as 4K does not necessarily support HDR or Dolby Vision.

TV feature Requirement or check Effect on Apple TV 4K
HDMI input At least one HDMI input is required. Provides the physical video and audio connection.
4K resolution 3840 × 2160 pixels for 4K output. Without a 4K panel, Apple TV cannot display 4K detail even if the source is 4K.
HDR10 Required to view HDR10 content in HDR10. Supported by Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) up to 2160p at 60 frames per second.
Dolby Vision Required for Dolby Vision output. Supported by Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) up to 2160p at 60 frames per second.
HDR10+ Required for HDR10+ output. Supported by Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) up to 2160p at 60 frames per second.
HLG Required for HLG playback. Supported by Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) up to 2160p at 60 frames per second.
Refresh-rate support For automatic HDR10, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision selection, the TV must support the relevant format at 60 Hz, or 50 Hz in Europe. With Match Dynamic Range enabled, Apple TV can display those formats at 30 Hz, or 25 Hz in Europe, when the television does not support the format at the higher rate.

HDR formats are not interchangeable

HDR10, Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are separate formats. A television that supports HDR10 does not automatically support Dolby Vision or HDR10+. Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) can output all three where supported, plus HLG, but the television’s specification must list the format explicitly. Streaming availability can also vary by title and service; the Apple TV cannot create Dolby Vision metadata for a program that was not supplied in that format.

Check the television’s HDMI port mode

Some televisions reserve full-bandwidth 4K and HDR operation for a particular HDMI input. Others require an option to be enabled before the port accepts enhanced signals. Depending on the manufacturer, the setting may be called Ultra, Deep Colour, Enhanced, HDR, HDR10+, Dolby Vision or a similar term. Consult the television’s on-screen menu and enable the enhanced mode on the exact input used by Apple TV. If the set has several HDMI sockets, its manual may identify which ones support the required 4K HDR features.

Account for the audio path

Dolby Atmos requires a Dolby Atmos-compatible sound system. If Apple TV connects through an AV receiver or soundbar, that device must pass 4K and HDR and must use an HDMI input and output that support those signals. A system can have a 4K television and a suitable cable yet lose HDR because an older receiver sits in the middle. The receiver or soundbar’s video pass-through specifications matter as much as the television’s.

What the current Apple TV 4K supports

Apple’s technical specifications for Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) list HDMI 2.1. The model supports Dolby Vision up to 2160p at 60 frames per second, and HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG up to 2160p at 60 frames per second. Apple’s system requirements state that 4K and HDR streaming requires both a 4K television and an HDR television.

Capability Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) What the rest of the system must provide
HDMI interface HDMI 2.1 A compatible cable and HDMI input or pass-through path.
Dolby Vision Up to 2160p at 60 fps A Dolby Vision-capable TV and compatible HDMI path.
HDR10+ Up to 2160p at 60 fps An HDR10+-capable TV and compatible HDMI path.
HDR10 Up to 2160p at 60 fps An HDR10-capable TV and compatible HDMI path.
HLG Up to 2160p at 60 fps A display and signal path that support HLG.

These are the Apple TV’s maximum documented output capabilities, not a promise that every app, title or television will use them. The weakest supported component determines the negotiated result.

How to connect Apple TV 4K for the best result

  1. Read the television specifications. Confirm that the set has an HDMI input, 4K resolution and the HDR formats you intend to use. Check whether Dolby Vision, HDR10+ or only HDR10 is supported, and note which HDMI ports accept 4K HDR.
  2. Select the cable. For 4K HDR, choose a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Prefer the “Compatible Dolby Vision” mark if you plan to use Dolby Vision. Make sure its length is practical for the installation and that any in-wall use is permitted by the cable’s rating.
  3. Connect Apple TV directly to the television first. Plug the cable into the Apple TV 4K HDMI port and into the television HDMI input identified for 4K HDR. A direct connection removes receivers, soundbars and switches as possible causes while you establish video.
  4. Select the correct TV input. Use the television remote to choose the HDMI socket containing Apple TV. Selecting another socket can produce a picture at a reduced format or no picture at all.
  5. Enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode. In the TV settings, turn on the option associated with 4K, HDR, deep colour, enhanced bandwidth, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision for that input. The wording differs by television.
  6. Open Apple TV’s video settings. Go to Settings > Video and Audio. Choose a format that the TV supports, and enable Match Dynamic Range if you want Apple TV to switch between SDR and HDR formats according to the content. Automatic selection at 60 Hz requires the television to support the relevant HDR format at that rate; otherwise, Apple TV may use the 30 Hz or 25 Hz fallback described by Apple.
  7. Run the HDMI test. In Settings > Video and Audio, select Check HDMI Connection. Apple describes this as a two-minute cable test. Let it finish before changing multiple settings, because the result helps distinguish a cable or signal-path problem from a format-setting problem.
  8. Add the audio equipment after video works. Reconnect the receiver or soundbar using HDMI inputs and outputs rated for 4K and HDR. Then verify Dolby Atmos support if Atmos audio is important to you.

Why Apple TV 4K may not show HDR or Dolby Vision

When the Apple TV menu or a movie does not show the expected format, troubleshoot the connection in a fixed order. This avoids replacing equipment when a TV input setting is the real cause.

The wrong HDMI input is selected

Switch the television to the HDMI port where Apple TV is connected. If the TV identifies ports with labels such as 4K, 8K, HDR or Enhanced, use the one specified for high-bandwidth video. If only one port supports Dolby Vision or HDR10+, Apple TV must be connected there.

Enhanced mode is disabled

Open the TV’s input or picture settings and enable its enhanced, deep-colour, ultra or HDR mode. Some sets expose HDR options only after the enhanced mode is enabled and the Apple TV is actively sending an HDR signal.

The cable is marginal or unsuitable

Run Check HDMI Connection. If the test fails, replace the cable with a compatible Ultra High Speed model, preferably one carrying the “Compatible Dolby Vision” mark. Keep the replacement cable short enough for the installation and remove unnecessary couplers or extensions while testing.

A receiver, soundbar or switch is blocking the format

Disconnect the receiver or soundbar temporarily and connect Apple TV directly to the TV. Remove HDMI switches, splitters and other accessories during diagnosis; Apple says these devices can interfere with a 4K or HDR signal. If direct connection restores HDR, check the intermediary device’s 4K, HDR and Dolby Vision pass-through specifications, then reconnect it using the correct HDMI ports.

The television does not support the selected HDR format

Verify the TV’s specification for the exact format. HDR10 support will not make Dolby Vision appear, and HDR10+ support is not implied by either HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Select a format that the TV lists, or leave Apple TV on an automatic option that can negotiate a supported mode.

The refresh rate is outside the TV’s HDR capability

Automatic HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision selection requires support at 60 Hz, or 50 Hz in Europe. If the TV supports the format only at a lower rate, enable Match Dynamic Range so Apple TV can use 30 Hz, or 25 Hz in Europe, where applicable. This can explain why a format appears at one setting but disappears after choosing a higher refresh rate.

A practical comparison checklist

Use the following points when comparing cables or televisions rather than relying on a single “4K ready” claim.

Item to compare Questions to ask
4K and HDR compatibility Does the cable support the intended 4K HDR signal? Does the TV list 4K, HDR10, Dolby Vision or HDR10+ explicitly?
Ultra High Speed labeling Is the cable identified as Ultra High Speed or otherwise rated for the required bandwidth?
Dolby Vision marking Does the cable carry Apple’s preferred “Compatible Dolby Vision” mark?
Length and installation Is the cable long enough without a coupler, and is it rated for an in-wall or concealed installation if needed?
TV HDMI inputs Which specific input supports 4K HDR, Dolby Vision or HDR10+? Does it require an enhanced mode?
Refresh rates Can the TV display each desired HDR format at 60 Hz, or 50 Hz in Europe?
Complete signal path Can every receiver, soundbar, switch and splitter pass the same 4K and HDR formats?

Installation pitfalls to avoid

  • Buying a cable solely because it fits the HDMI socket, without checking its 4K HDR capability.
  • Assuming every HDMI input on a television has identical 4K, HDR or Dolby Vision support.
  • Confusing 4K resolution with HDR; they are separate features and both must be supported for 4K HDR.
  • Routing Apple TV through an older receiver or soundbar before confirming its video pass-through specifications.
  • Leaving HDMI switches, splitters or extension accessories connected while diagnosing a failed HDR handshake.
  • Choosing Dolby Vision in Apple TV when the television supports only HDR10 or HDR10+.
  • Ignoring regional refresh-rate requirements: 60 Hz applies to the automatic-selection guidance in most regions, while Europe uses 50 Hz and the corresponding 25 Hz fallback.
