HDMI 2.1 is a menu of possible capabilities, not a guarantee that a TV has every one of them. eARC is the HDMI audio-return path to a soundbar or receiver, while VRR synchronizes a display with changing game frame rates. To buy intelligently, check the exact model, the specific input, the supported resolution and refresh rate, and the compatibility of every connected device.
HDMI 2.1 is a specification, not a complete feature list
HDMI 2.1 defines a collection of capabilities that a manufacturer may implement. The version number alone does not confirm 4K at 120 Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR), enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC), a particular bandwidth, or support on every HDMI input. HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) says the features are optional and that manufacturers should identify which HDMI 2.1 features each product supports. Its marketing guidance states: “If the manufacturer promotes compliance with the HDMI 2.1 Specification, the manufacturer is required to list the HDMI 2.1 features supported by the product next to that messaging.” See the HDMI LA HDMI 2.1 product marketing FAQ.
That is why two televisions both advertised as “HDMI 2.1 TVs” can have different numbers of suitable inputs and different combinations of gaming, audio and video features. One model might provide a high-refresh gaming mode on two inputs, while another limits it to one; the label does not resolve that difference.

What the 4K/120 claim actually means
The HDMI Forum’s 2017 announcement describes HDMI 2.1 capabilities including 4K resolution at 120 Hz. That is a capability of the specification, not evidence that every HDMI 2.1 television accepts a 4K/120 signal on every port. Confirm the resolution and refresh-rate combinations in the television’s manual or official specification sheet, including whether they apply to particular input numbers.

Why port-by-port checking matters
Manufacturers can assign different capabilities to different sockets. A TV may have several HDMI inputs but only some may support the high-bandwidth mode, VRR or eARC. HDMI LA’s general feature pages explain the standards; they do not establish the port map for an individual television. Look for a table in the exact model’s documentation that identifies input numbers, maximum resolution and refresh rate, VRR formats or ranges, and the input marked for eARC.
What eARC does for a soundbar or AV receiver
eARC means Enhanced Audio Return Channel. It lets audio originating from devices connected to the TV—or from the TV’s own cable, satellite or streaming apps—travel to a compatible soundbar or AV receiver through one HDMI cable. HDMI LA describes this as sending TV audio to an AVR or soundbar over a single HDMI connection; its eARC explainer is the reference for the feature.
The practical signal path
- Connect the soundbar or receiver to the TV’s HDMI socket specifically labeled “eARC” (or “ARC/eARC”).
- Connect your console, disc player or other source to an HDMI input on the TV, or use an input built into the receiver if that arrangement suits your setup.
- Enable eARC and the relevant HDMI-control or audio-output setting in the TV menu, following the model manual’s labels.
- Set the source and sound system to an audio format they both support, then verify that the receiver or soundbar reports the expected format.
The final step matters because eARC on one device does not prove that the complete source, TV and audio chain can decode or pass a particular format.

Audio capability figures
HDMI LA lists eARC support for high-bitrate formats such as Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio and DTS:X. Its explainer also states capability for up to 192 kHz, 24-bit audio and uncompressed 5.1, 7.1 and 32-channel audio. Those are stated format capabilities, not a promise that a particular TV, app, source or soundbar will output every format. The content, device processing and settings still determine what you hear.
When eARC should influence your purchase
- Choose it deliberately if you plan to use a compatible soundbar or receiver and want the TV to return audio from built-in apps or devices connected to the TV.
- Check both ends. The TV and the intended sound system must each list eARC and the audio formats you need.
- Do not infer it from “HDMI 2.1.” eARC is optional within the specification, so verify the exact port and model documentation.
What VRR changes for console and PC gaming
Variable Refresh Rate allows a display’s timing to follow the changing rate at which a console or computer renders frames. HDMI LA explains the feature in its VRR overview. When rendering speed varies, matching the panel’s refresh timing to frame delivery can reduce visible judder and tearing. This is principally a gaming feature; it has little relevance to ordinary fixed-frame television viewing.
VRR is a compatibility question, not just a TV checkbox
The game source must output a VRR mode that the television accepts, and the connection must use an input that supports that mode at the desired resolution and refresh rate. A console may offer a different range or format from a PC graphics card. Check the source manufacturer’s specifications and the TV manual rather than assuming that any VRR label means every source will work.

What to record before buying
- The console or PC’s target resolution and maximum frame rate.
- The TV’s supported VRR formats and operating range, if the manufacturer publishes them.
- Which HDMI inputs support VRR at that resolution and refresh rate.
- Whether enabling another mode, such as a high-refresh or picture-processing option, changes the available combination.
No general HDMI feature page can substitute for those model-specific details. There is no universal VRR range that can safely be assumed from the words “HDMI 2.1.”
Compare the TV connection by your actual use case
| Use case | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Console or PC gaming | Explicit VRR support, target resolution and refresh rate, and the input or inputs supporting that combination | VRR can reduce judder and tearing when frame delivery changes; high-refresh support depends on the model and port. |
| External audio | eARC on the TV and the intended soundbar or receiver, plus supported audio formats across the chain | eARC carries TV audio to the audio device, but every device and source must support the desired format. |
| High-bandwidth video | The required signal and an appropriately certified cable | The cable must have enough tested capacity for the connection you intend to run. |
A model-level checklist before you pay
Use the following process for each candidate TV. It prevents a broad version label from becoming an expensive assumption.
- Write down your signal. Specify the source (for example, a console or PC), resolution, target refresh rate and whether you need VRR.
- Find the exact model number. Regional variants and screen sizes can have different input layouts or capabilities, so do not rely on a family name alone.
- Open the official specification sheet and manual. Record the number of HDMI inputs and the maximum resolution and refresh rate listed for each relevant input.
- Verify gaming features separately. Look for an explicit VRR listing and, where available, the supported format and range. Confirm that the same input supports your chosen resolution and refresh rate.
- Verify audio routing. Identify the socket marked eARC and compare the TV’s listed audio formats with those of your planned soundbar or receiver.
- Check the entire chain. Include the source device, cable, TV input and audio equipment. The weakest or incompatible link determines the result.
- Save the documentation. Keep the manual or specification page for setup; menu names and port assignments are model-specific.
Do you need a new HDMI cable?
Only buy a different cable when the planned signal requires it or the existing cable is unreliable. Do not assume that every television marketed with HDMI 2.1 needs a replacement cable.

For connections that need the higher-bandwidth cable class, look for the official Ultra High Speed HDMI certification label rather than generic wording such as “HDMI 2.1 cable.” HDMI LA says an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable supports up to 48 Gbps and requires authorized testing; each length in a model line must be tested. The certification guidance is available at HDMI LA’s Ultra High Speed HDMI cable page.
- Match the cable choice to the source, TV input, resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.
- Use the certified label as evidence that the cable class was tested, not as proof that every connected device supports a given feature.
- If a high-refresh signal fails, test a short, certified cable directly between the source and the correct TV input before changing other settings.
Common mistakes and how to diagnose them
“The box says HDMI 2.1, so 4K/120 must work.”
Check the model’s input table. Confirm that the source is connected to the specified high-bandwidth input and that the source output is set to a supported combination. If only one input supports the mode, moving the cable can resolve the issue.
“VRR is enabled, but the game still tears or stutters.”
Verify that VRR is enabled both on the source and in the TV’s game or HDMI settings. Confirm that the source’s VRR format and frame-rate range overlap the TV’s published support, and check that the cable and input are the ones specified for that signal.

“The soundbar is connected, but the TV sends basic audio.”
Make sure the cable is in the TV’s eARC socket, not an ordinary HDMI input. Confirm eARC is enabled, then compare the TV, source and soundbar’s supported formats. A streaming app or source may provide a different soundtrack from the format you expected.
“A cable labeled HDMI 2.1 does not solve the problem.”
The label is not the same as official certification. Check for the Ultra High Speed HDMI certification label and make sure the TV input and source are also capable of the required signal. A certified cable cannot add VRR, eARC or 4K/120 support that a device lacks.
Where HDMI 2.2 fits
HDMI LA’s current technology overview identifies HDMI 2.2 as the latest specification update and describes up to 96 Gbps of bandwidth. The overview is at HDMI LA’s HDMI technology page, while its 2026 specification article is at HDMI LA’s HDMI 2.2 specification article. That newer figure is context, not a reason to reject a TV chosen for the HDMI 2.1-era features discussed here. A buyer focused on eARC, VRR or 4K/120 should still verify those features directly; a newer version number does not remove the need for model-level checking.

The buying decision in one pass
Start with the device you will connect, not the HDMI number printed on a box. For gaming, match the console or PC’s resolution, refresh rate and VRR mode to a specific TV input. For external audio, match the TV’s eARC socket and formats to the soundbar or receiver. For demanding video signals, select a cable with the official Ultra High Speed certification when the required bandwidth calls for it. Then confirm every detail in the exact model’s official specifications or manual. This approach tells you what the television actually does instead of what its version label merely permits.
