Short answer: The local version of DLSS 5 in Hogwarts Legacy requires a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU. NVIDIA has not named an RTX 5060, 5070, 5080, or 5090 as a minimum, and it has not published a game-specific minimum VRAM figure. The update is scheduled for November 5, 2026, and NVIDIA also lists GeForce NOW and RTX Spark as ways to use the feature without rendering locally.
NVIDIA says the October DLSS 5 model uses 20% less VRAM at 4K, has a 24% smaller footprint at roughly 118 million parameters, and creates half the GPU overhead of the September model at comparable visual fidelity. Those are efficiency improvements, not a promise that every RTX 50 card will run every resolution, ray-tracing preset, and frame-rate target. Your practical choice still depends on output resolution, ray tracing, native rendered frame rate, CPU performance, and whether the GPU is a desktop card or a laptop part.
What NVIDIA has actually confirmed
NVIDIA announced on October 13, 2026 that DLSS 5 with 3D-Guided Neural Rendering is coming to Hogwarts Legacy on November 5, 2026. The announcement names three supported platforms: GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, GeForce NOW, and RTX Spark.

The announcement does not establish a single entry-level model. In other words, it does not say that an RTX 5060 is sufficient, nor does it require an RTX 5090. Until NVIDIA or the game developer publishes model-by-model guidance or benchmarks, selecting a card requires matching its performance and memory capacity to your intended settings rather than relying on a single minimum number.

Hogwarts Legacy already supports DLSS Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction on GeForce RTX PCs and laptops. The November update adds DLSS Neural Rendering and upgrades the game’s other DLSS technologies. This means the update is not simply a conventional upscaler patch: it combines the new neural-rendering model with the existing DLSS feature set.
GPU requirement for local play
GeForce RTX 50 Series is the stated target
If your own desktop or laptop is doing the rendering, plan on a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU. NVIDIA’s public announcement does not list RTX 40 or RTX 30 cards as receiving the DLSS 5 Neural Rendering feature in this game. That is an evidence limit, not a claim that those cards cannot run Hogwarts Legacy or its older DLSS options. They may continue to run the base game and previously supported features, but DLSS 5 compatibility for them has not been confirmed.
The same qualification applies to individual RTX 50 models. No official Hogwarts Legacy DLSS 5 minimum model, per-model frame-rate target, or latency guarantee has been published. Treat RTX 50-series support as the software gate, then size the card for the workload you actually want.

A laptop GPU can carry the same family name as a desktop GPU while operating at a lower power limit. Cooling design, wattage, and the laptop manufacturer’s configuration affect sustained clocks and therefore native rendering performance. For a laptop purchase, check the machine’s stated GPU power limit and cooling configuration rather than comparing only the model number with a desktop card.
CPU limits matter as well. Frame generation can increase the number shown on the display, but it cannot make a processor produce game simulation, draw calls, and input response faster than it can. A high-refresh target at 1080p can become CPU-limited sooner than a 4K target, even when the same RTX 50 GPU is installed.

VRAM: what is known, and what is not
NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 efficiency figures
NVIDIA reports that the October DLSS 5 update reduces 4K VRAM usage by 20%. It also reduces the model footprint by 24%, to roughly 118 million parameters, and cuts GPU overhead to half that of the September model at comparable visual fidelity. These figures describe the October model’s relative efficiency; they are not a minimum-memory specification for Hogwarts Legacy.
NVIDIA has not published a universal DLSS 5 VRAM minimum for this game. The 20% figure therefore cannot be converted into a statement such as “4K requires exactly X GB.” Actual allocation varies with resolution, texture quality, ray-tracing settings, display mode, background applications, driver behavior, and the rest of the game’s rendering workload.

Do not confuse VRAM with system RAM
VRAM is the graphics card’s memory. System RAM is the memory installed for Windows and the game’s CPU-side workloads. The PC requirement table for Hogwarts Legacy lists system RAM targets, but those values do not establish the VRAM required by DLSS 5. A card can have enough VRAM for one preset and still be limited by its shader throughput, ray-tracing performance, or CPU at another resolution.
Base-game PC requirements provide workload context
The game’s own PC table is useful for understanding how demanding the underlying workload can be. It is not a DLSS 5 compatibility table. The published tiers specify DirectX 12 and 85 GB of storage; an SSD is required for the higher tiers.
| Game tier | Graphics hardware listed by the game | System RAM | Other published conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum/Low | GeForce GTX 960 4GB or Radeon RX 470 4GB | Not stated in the supplied tier description | DirectX 12; 85 GB storage for the game |
| Recommended/High | GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, Radeon RX 5700 XT, or Intel Arc A770 | 16 GB | DirectX 12; 85 GB storage |
| Ultra 1440p | GeForce RTX 2080 Ti or Radeon RX 6800 XT | 32 GB | SSD required; DirectX 12; 85 GB storage |
| Ultra 4K | GeForce RTX 3090 Ti or Radeon RX 7900 XT | 32 GB | SSD required; DirectX 12; 85 GB storage |
These are base-game recommendations for their named presets and resolutions. They should not be read as a DLSS 5 minimum, and they do not imply that an older card listed in the table will receive DLSS 5 Neural Rendering. They do show why a 4K Ultra configuration needs substantially more rendering capacity and system memory than a low preset.

How frame generation fits into the requirement
Multi Frame Generation increases displayed frames, not base rendering speed
NVIDIA Developer documentation says DLSS Multi Frame Generation can generate up to five AI frames per rendered frame on GeForce RTX 50 Series and RTX PRO Blackwell Generation GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores. The generated images are inserted between traditionally rendered frames, so the feature can raise the displayed frame rate without requiring the GPU to render every displayed image from scratch.
That does not remove the need for a healthy native frame rate. If the game is rendering only a very low number of base frames, generated frames cannot fully solve input latency, uneven frame pacing, or CPU-side stalls. The practical result depends on the GPU, CPU, resolution, ray tracing, and graphics settings. Consider the native rendered rate the foundation and frame generation an additional presentation layer.
Existing and new DLSS features in Hogwarts Legacy
Before the November 5 update, the game already supported Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction on GeForce RTX PCs and laptops. The update adds Neural Rendering and upgrades the other DLSS technologies. Owners should therefore check which individual toggles appear in the game after updating; having an RTX GPU does not mean every DLSS option is available on every generation.
Choosing an RTX 50 card by workload
Because NVIDIA has not supplied model-specific Hogwarts Legacy numbers, use a workload-first decision rather than a “minimum card” list. The following framework keeps the confirmed facts separate from assumptions about performance.
| Target | What to prioritize | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, high refresh | Strong CPU performance, high native frame rate, and a laptop power limit that can sustain the GPU | At lower resolution, the processor and game simulation can become the limiting factors before the GPU is fully loaded. Frame generation is most useful after a solid native rate is established. |
| 1440p with ray tracing | Balanced RTX 50 GPU capacity, sufficient VRAM headroom, and cooling that maintains clocks | Ray-tracing effects increase GPU workload. Leave memory and performance margin instead of choosing a card that only meets a non-ray-traced target. |
| 4K Ultra | The highest GPU capacity you can justify, 32 GB system RAM as indicated by the game’s Ultra 4K tier, and an SSD | The game’s own 4K Ultra tier lists an RTX 3090 Ti or RX 7900 XT class GPU. DLSS 5 can reduce overhead, but it does not turn that tier into a fixed low-memory workload. |
For any of these targets, compare the card’s VRAM capacity, expected native rendered frame rate before frame generation, ray-tracing performance, and the rest of the system. NVIDIA has not published prices, a Hogwarts Legacy benchmark by RTX 50 model, or a guaranteed frame-rate figure, so a purchase decision based on a precise FPS promise would go beyond the available evidence.

Using GeForce NOW or RTX Spark instead of a local GPU
NVIDIA lists GeForce NOW and RTX Spark alongside GeForce RTX 50 Series as delivery options for DLSS 5 in Hogwarts Legacy. These options move or consolidate the rendering hardware rather than making a local, older GPU DLSS 5-compatible. Your experience will consequently depend on the service or device configuration, network conditions where applicable, and the game’s supported release on that platform.
If your computer does not contain an RTX 50 Series GPU, these alternatives are the officially named paths in NVIDIA’s announcement. The announcement does not provide a universal local VRAM requirement for either alternative, so do not infer one from the desktop PC table.
What to do when the update arrives
- Update Hogwarts Legacy through your PC or supported service and install a current graphics driver for your RTX 50 Series GPU.
- Confirm that the game is running in DirectX 12 and that the installation meets the published 85 GB storage requirement. Use an SSD for the Ultra 1440p and Ultra 4K tiers, which list SSD storage as required.
- Open the game’s graphics or display settings and identify the DLSS options added by the November 5 update, including Neural Rendering and Multi Frame Generation.
- Choose your target resolution and ray-tracing preset first. Then enable DLSS and frame-generation options while watching the native rendered frame rate, frame pacing, and input responsiveness.
- If memory warnings, texture pop-in, stutter, or driver-level out-of-memory errors occur, reduce texture or ray-tracing settings and close background applications before assuming the DLSS model itself is the sole cause.
- On a laptop, test while connected to AC power and in the manufacturer’s performance mode. Record the GPU power limit and temperatures during a sustained session, because short benchmark bursts may not represent gameplay performance.
Common questions with no official answer yet
Does DLSS 5 require an RTX 5090?
No. NVIDIA requires an RTX 50 Series GPU for local support but has not identified the RTX 5090, or any other individual model, as the minimum.
Can an RTX 40 or RTX 30 card run DLSS 5 in this game?
NVIDIA has not confirmed DLSS 5 Neural Rendering support for RTX 40 or RTX 30 cards in Hogwarts Legacy. Their ability to run the base game and older DLSS features should not be treated as confirmation of the new feature.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How much VRAM is required at 4K?
No DLSS 5-specific minimum VRAM number has been published. NVIDIA’s confirmed figure is a 20% reduction in 4K VRAM usage for the October model, not a fixed capacity requirement.
Will frame generation work with DLSS 5?
Yes, the update adds Neural Rendering to a game that already supports DLSS Multi Frame Generation on GeForce RTX PCs and laptops. Multi Frame Generation can create up to five AI frames per rendered frame on RTX 50 and RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs with fifth-generation Tensor Cores, but the quality of the result still depends on adequate native rendering and system performance.
Bottom line for a hardware purchase
Buy or use a GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU if local DLSS 5 in Hogwarts Legacy is the goal. Do not buy a specific model solely because it is labeled “DLSS 5 compatible”: NVIDIA has not published a minimum model, VRAM threshold, or per-model FPS target. Match the card to your resolution and ray-tracing settings, provide the system RAM and SSD specified by the game’s target tier, and treat frame generation as an enhancer of a sufficiently strong native frame rate rather than a replacement for rendering performance.
