For most homes, a low-power Intel 12th-generation-or-newer N-series mini PC is the best 24/7 Jellyfin host. Choose a model with integrated graphics and Intel Quick Sync, install the operating system and Jellyfin on a 100GB-or-larger SSD, keep the media library on separate storage, and connect the server by gigabit Ethernet or faster. Add a discrete GPU only when your clients cannot direct-play much of the library, you need several simultaneous transcodes, or HDR tone-mapping exceeds the integrated GPU’s capability.

Transcoding, not the Jellyfin application, determines the hardware

Jellyfin itself is modest software when every client can play a file exactly as stored. The demanding work begins when the server must transcode: decode the source video, possibly resize or change its frame rate, encode a new stream, and sometimes convert HDR to SDR. Each additional video transcode consumes substantially more compute and graphics resources than direct play.

Direct play uses the least hardware

In direct play, the client accepts the container, video codec, audio codec, subtitles and bitrate already in the file. The server mainly reads the file and sends it over the network. A low-power processor can serve many direct-play sessions, subject to storage and network limits.

Transcoding raises CPU and GPU requirements

Jellyfin’s official hardware guidance warns that CPU-only video transcoding is very performance demanding and says not having a GPU is not recommended. A supported integrated GPU, such as Intel Quick Sync, can perform the video work without requiring a separate graphics card. The exact number of streams depends on codec, resolution, bitrate, client support, operating-system drivers, Jellyfin version, tone-mapping and simultaneous users; there is no universal stream-count table that applies to every machine.

HDR tone-mapping can be the hardest case

Converting HDR video for an SDR display adds another processing stage. Jellyfin’s guidance gives a Ryzen 9 5950X as an example of a powerful CPU that may still fail to handle even one stream in some HDR tone-mapping configurations. Treat HDR requirements as a separate workload when selecting hardware rather than assuming a high CPU core count is sufficient.

Jellyfin’s hardware guidance states that its server can offload on-the-fly video transcoding to an integrated or discrete GPU, accelerating the workload efficiently without straining the CPU.

The practical 24/7 baseline

Component Recommended baseline Why it matters
Host Intel 12th-generation-or-newer N-series mini PC Low idle power, compact size and integrated graphics with Quick Sync for supported transcoding.
System and cache drive SSD with at least 100GB Holds the operating system, Jellyfin files and transcoding cache; larger capacity helps with Windows 11, large files and many concurrent streams.
Media storage Separate drive array, NAS volume or directly attached disks sized for the library Movie and television files can grow far beyond the system drive. Jellyfin’s guide does not prescribe one universal library capacity.
Network Gigabit Ethernet or faster Stable wired throughput avoids the variability Jellyfin associates with Wi-Fi and powerline networking.
Graphics acceleration Intel Quick Sync, or a supported discrete GPU when required Hardware decoding and encoding keep transcodes from overwhelming the CPU.
Remote upload At least 20 Mbps upload capacity Remote clients must receive the resulting stream; upstream bandwidth is often the limiting factor outside the home.

This baseline is a starting point, not a promise of a particular stream count. Verify the exact processor, graphics engine, drivers and operating system for the codecs your library uses.

Choosing the host platform

Intel N-series mini PC: the balanced choice

An Intel N-series system from the 12th generation or newer combines low power use with integrated graphics. Quick Sync is one of Jellyfin’s validated acceleration methods, so the machine can remain small and quiet while handling common H.264 and HEVC conversions. It is especially suitable when most household devices direct-play and only occasional streams need conversion.

Check that the mini PC exposes the graphics device to the operating system, has adequate cooling for sustained workloads, and provides the storage and Ethernet ports you need. A model with only wireless networking can still work as a client, but use a wired adapter for the server.

Desktop CPU without usable integrated graphics

A desktop processor can run Jellyfin, but a CPU-only configuration is a poor default for a 24/7 media server. Jellyfin explicitly characterizes CPU transcoding as very demanding. Even a high-end processor can struggle with HDR tone-mapping, and the server will draw more power and generate more heat while doing so. Choose this route only when your clients reliably direct-play or when you will install a supported graphics card.

Discrete GPU for heavier workloads

A discrete card becomes sensible when several users transcode at once, clients lack support for your codecs, or HDR tone-mapping is frequent. Jellyfin lists Intel Quick Sync Video, NVIDIA NVDEC/NVENC, AMD AMF, Linux VA-API, Apple Video Toolbox and Rockchip RKMPP among its validated acceleration methods. NVIDIA NVENC supports headless operation on Windows and Linux, so the server does not need a monitor attached.

Do not select a card by brand name or memory size alone. Confirm that the specific GPU supports hardware encoding for your codecs, that the operating system has a compatible driver, and that your Jellyfin version supports the required acceleration path.

Low-end GPU pitfalls

Jellyfin flags some inexpensive cards, including the NVIDIA GT 1030 and AMD RX 6400, as unable to provide hardware encoding. Such a card may display video or accelerate decoding yet still fail the encoding step required for a transcode. Check encoding support before buying, especially if the card is being added to an otherwise capable but graphics-less desktop.

System, cache and media storage

Put the operating system and transcode cache on an SSD

Jellyfin’s 2026 Hardware Selection guidance recommends a 100GB SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin files and transcoding cache. The cache can grow when large media files are converted or several streams run concurrently. Allow additional space on Windows 11 and whenever your usage involves high-bitrate files or many simultaneous sessions.

Keep the cache on the fast system drive rather than on a slow, heavily used media disk. Monitor free space: a full cache volume can cause failed transcodes even when the library disks still have room.

Size bulk storage from the library, not from Jellyfin

There is no fixed Jellyfin media-storage requirement. Estimate the total size of your movies, episodes, music and future additions, then provide redundancy or backups according to how costly the collection would be to recreate. Separate bulk storage also lets you replace or upgrade the operating-system drive without moving the application’s data.

Networking for local and remote playback

Use wired Ethernet for the server

Connect the host to a gigabit Ethernet port or faster. Jellyfin says Wi-Fi and powerline solutions are not recommended for a server because interference, contention and variable latency can produce a poor experience. Wired networking also makes troubleshooting bitrate and buffering problems easier.

Plan upload capacity for remote users

For remote access, Jellyfin recommends at least 20 Mbps of upload bandwidth. That figure is the connection’s upstream capacity, not the download speed advertised for the home. If total upload capacity is below 100 Mbps, Jellyfin suggests limiting its use to 70% of the available upload speed so other household traffic retains headroom. Several remote transcodes can consume that allowance quickly, particularly at high bitrates.

NAS, single-board computers and older machines

NAS appliances

A NAS is attractive when you want disks, redundancy and the server in one enclosure. However, third-party software can be harder to configure on a prebuilt NAS, and some models use processors that are too slow for an acceptable Jellyfin experience. Before choosing one, verify GPU access, hardware encoding support, container or package availability, driver compatibility and the Ethernet speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Single-board computers

Most single-board computers, including Raspberry Pi 5, are described in Jellyfin’s guidance as too slow for a general-purpose server unless they use a more capable platform such as Rockchip RK3588 or RK3588S, Intel Core or Intel 12th-generation N-series hardware. A board that can direct-play files may still fail when asked to transcode or tone-map HDR.

Older x86 systems

Jellyfin 10.11 requires SSE4.1 on x86 processors. Intel Penryn, introduced in the fourth quarter of 2007, and AMD Bulldozer, introduced in the fourth quarter of 2011, are examples of generations that support it. Meeting that instruction-set requirement does not guarantee good transcoding performance; graphics acceleration, drivers and sustained cooling remain decisive.

Build and configure a 24/7 Jellyfin server

  1. Inventory your clients and files. Record which televisions, phones and browsers support direct play, then note the video codecs, HDR formats, subtitle types and peak bitrates in your library. This determines whether the integrated GPU is likely to be enough.
  2. Select the host. Start with an Intel 12th-generation-or-newer N-series mini PC. Move to a discrete-GPU system when the workload table points to frequent simultaneous transcodes or demanding tone-mapping.
  3. Install the system drive. Use a 100GB-or-larger SSD for the operating system, Jellyfin data and transcode cache. Leave additional free space if you use Windows 11, large files or multiple concurrent streams.
  4. Attach bulk storage. Put the media library on separate disks, a directly attached enclosure or a NAS share. Size it for the current collection and planned growth, and configure backups or redundancy separately from Jellyfin.
  5. Wire the network. Connect the host to gigabit Ethernet or faster. Reserve Wi-Fi for clients rather than the always-on server.
  6. Install current graphics drivers. For Quick Sync, VA-API, NVDEC/NVENC, AMF, Video Toolbox or RKMPP, install the driver path required by the operating system and confirm that Jellyfin can see the GPU.
  7. Enable acceleration in Jellyfin. Open the administrator dashboard, go to the playback or transcoding settings, select the acceleration method exposed by the host, and enable only codecs that the hardware and driver actually support. Save the settings and restart the server if Jellyfin requests it.
  8. Test the real workload. Play a file that direct-plays, then force a lower-quality or incompatible client profile to trigger a transcode. Test an HDR source on an SDR client if that is part of your use case. Watch the playback session and system metrics for dropped frames, failed hardware initialization, high temperatures or a rapidly filling cache.
  9. Measure remote capacity. Test from outside the home network and keep Jellyfin’s upload use within the available upstream budget. When the connection provides less than 100 Mbps upload, apply the 70% limit suggested by Jellyfin.

24/7 reliability checklist

  • Use a case with unobstructed airflow and cleanable dust filters; sustained transcoding is a continuous thermal load.
  • Choose a power supply appropriate for the host and any discrete GPU, with headroom for peak load.
  • Configure the operating system to restart Jellyfin after a service failure and to apply security updates during a maintenance window.
  • Keep the media library and Jellyfin configuration backed up; a mirrored disk protects against a drive failure but is not a substitute for a separate backup.
  • Monitor SSD free space, cache growth, temperatures, network throughput and failed playback sessions.
  • Document the GPU model, driver version, Jellyfin version and acceleration settings so a later update can be rolled back when a codec stops working.

Troubleshooting common hardware problems

Playback buffers while the CPU is near full load

The server is probably transcoding without usable hardware acceleration. Confirm that the GPU is visible to the operating system, the correct driver is installed, and the selected codecs are enabled in Jellyfin. If the hardware cannot encode that codec, use a compatible media file or add a supported GPU.

Video works locally but fails remotely

Check upstream bandwidth first, then inspect whether the remote client triggers a transcode. A home connection can have ample download speed yet insufficient upload capacity. Keep remote traffic below the recommended limit and reduce the stream bitrate when necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HDR playback fails or becomes extremely slow

Verify that the GPU and driver support the required HDR decode, tone-mapping and encode path. If the integrated GPU cannot handle the combination, use a discrete GPU validated for the operating system or arrange for clients to direct-play HDR.

The server runs out of disk space

Check the SSD that stores Jellyfin’s transcode cache rather than only the media volume. Large files and multiple concurrent sessions can consume cache space; expand the SSD and review cache-management settings before moving the library.

A NAS package performs poorly

Identify whether the NAS processor is handling video transcodes on the CPU because the package cannot access its graphics engine. If so, run Jellyfin on a compatible mini PC and use the NAS for storage, or replace the NAS with hardware whose GPU and drivers are supported.
