There is no handheld that AMD currently documents as officially compatible with FSR 4. AMD now calls the feature FSR Upscaling within the FSR Redstone suite. Its compatibility pages list Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics cards, while AMD’s Adrenalin release notes explicitly say the package does not support handheld gaming devices. A handheld therefore qualifies only when its manufacturer documents the required GPU, OEM driver and game path.
The game must also support the right integration. Native FSR Upscaling appears in a game’s own graphics menu; AMD’s driver-upgrade path requires an FSR 3.1-or-newer integration running through DirectX 12. Frame generation has separate requirements and should not be treated as proof that upscaling works.
What “FSR 4” means in current AMD documentation
“FSR 4” remains the name many players use, but AMD’s current terminology is FSR Upscaling, an ML-based upscaling feature in the FSR Redstone family. AMD says the rename separates upscaling from Redstone’s other technologies, including Frame Generation, Ray Regeneration and Radiance Caching. A game or review may still display “FSR 4” in its menu even though AMD’s support pages call the feature FSR Upscaling.
This distinction matters on a handheld. A title can advertise FSR support, or even support another Redstone feature, without supporting ML-based FSR Upscaling. Check the feature and integration route for the exact game rather than relying on the word “FSR” alone.

Why a listed Radeon GPU does not automatically make a handheld compatible
AMD’s FSR page identifies Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series graphics cards for ML-based FSR Upscaling. That is a graphics-series eligibility statement, not a declaration that every integrated GPU or handheld using a related architecture is supported.
AMD’s Adrenalin 25.6.1 release notes contain an explicit limitation: “AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition does not include support for handheld gaming devices. Users should check with the OEM for device specific drivers.” The normal desktop Adrenalin package therefore cannot be used as evidence that a handheld is supported. The handheld maker must provide a compatible driver and document the feature.
| Requirement or claim | What AMD documents | What it means for a handheld |
|---|---|---|
| ML-based FSR Upscaling | Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series graphics cards are listed. | A handheld APU is not confirmed merely because its marketing name resembles one of these series. |
| RX 9000 Redstone catalog support | AMD’s supported-games catalog specifies Adrenalin 25.12.1 or newer on RX 9000 graphics cards for listed Redstone technologies. | The catalog condition still does not replace an OEM handheld driver. |
| RX 7000 upscaling-only path | The catalog separately states that FSR Redstone Upscaling only is available on RX 7000 graphics cards with Adrenalin 26.6.2 or newer. | Do not equate this desktop-GPU statement with confirmation for an RX 7000-class handheld APU. |
| RX 6000 | AMD says RX 6000 Series support is planned for 2027. | This is a future desktop-series statement and does not establish handheld support. |
At the original 2025 launch, AMD described FSR 4 as exclusive to RX 9000 Series graphics cards and tied it to RDNA 4’s hardware-accelerated FP8 WMMA capability. Current documentation has expanded the listed graphics support, so use the current compatibility conditions rather than the launch announcement when checking a device.

Native FSR Upscaling integration
Some games integrate the ML-based upscaler directly through the FSR SDK. In those titles, select the FSR option in the game’s graphics or upscaling menu. The menu may still label it “FSR 4.” Native integration is game-specific; the presence of an FSR toggle does not tell you which FSR generation or Redstone feature it represents.
Driver-upgraded ML-based upscaling
AMD’s driver-upgrade route is narrower. The game must have FSR 3.1 or later, use the standard integration documented in the FSR SDK and run through DirectX 12. AMD’s supported-games catalog marks titles that use this route, including titles identified with an asterisk. A title without the required integration cannot be converted simply by installing a newer driver.
Frame generation is a separate feature
FSR Frame Generation is not the same as FSR Upscaling. AMD specifies FSR Frame Generation 3.1.4 or newer, Windows 11 and DirectX 12 for the driver-upgraded frame-generation path. A game that supports frame generation may not support ML-based upscaling, and the reverse can also be true.
| Feature | Game-side condition | Additional platform condition |
|---|---|---|
| Native ML-based FSR Upscaling | The game includes its own supported integration and setting. | Use the game’s documented platform and the handheld OEM driver. |
| Driver-upgraded ML-based FSR Upscaling | FSR 3.1 or newer, standard FSR SDK integration and DirectX 12. | A compatible AMD driver path; AMD’s desktop Adrenalin package alone does not support handheld devices. |
| Driver-upgraded FSR Frame Generation | FSR Frame Generation 3.1.4 or newer and DirectX 12. | Windows 11 plus a supported driver; this does not establish upscaling support. |

- Identify the exact graphics processor. In Windows, open Settings > System > About for the processor model, then confirm the active GPU in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display or Device Manager. Record the complete APU/GPU name, not just “Radeon graphics.”
- Read the handheld maker’s driver notes. Look for an OEM graphics package that names FSR Upscaling, FSR 4 or the relevant Redstone feature. AMD’s desktop compatibility list is not a substitute for this documentation.
- Confirm the operating system and API. The driver-upgrade requirements use DirectX 12. The frame-generation route additionally specifies Windows 11. A game running through another API does not meet those stated conditions for the driver-upgrade feature.
- Check AMD’s live Gaming Technologies Supported Games catalog. Use the feature column and the integration indicator. A listing for Ray Regeneration, Radiance Caching or Frame Generation alone is not an FSR Upscaling listing.
- Determine the route. If the game has native integration, its own menu should expose the option. If it is marked for driver upgrade, verify FSR 3.1 or newer, standard integration and DirectX 12.
- Verify the driver version supplied for that handheld. The catalog’s 25.12.1 and 26.6.2 conditions refer to AMD’s stated graphics support. Install only the version or package offered by the handheld OEM unless that OEM explicitly directs you otherwise.
- Test with the game closed first. Driver-level graphics switches are normally applied before launching the title. Reopen the game after changing them and confirm the in-game setting.
If any step is undocumented, the correct result is “unconfirmed,” not “compatible.”
How to enable FSR Upscaling when the device and game are supported
For a game with native integration
- Install the handheld manufacturer’s current graphics driver.
- Launch the game and open its graphics, display or upscaling settings.
- Select the setting labelled FSR Upscaling or FSR 4, then choose the desired render scale or quality preset if the game provides one.
- Apply the change and restart the game if it requests a restart.
For AMD’s driver-upgrade route
- Close the game completely.
- Open AMD Software and go to Gaming > Graphics.
- Enable AMD FSR Upscaling. Enable the Frame Generation switch only when the game and your driver are documented as supporting that separate feature.
- Launch the game and enable its corresponding FSR option in the graphics settings.
- Confirm that the game is using DirectX 12 and that its integration is FSR 3.1 or newer.
These are AMD’s general steps for supported systems. They do not override the release-note warning that the standard Adrenalin package excludes handheld gaming devices. On a handheld, the OEM’s control panel or driver instructions take precedence; if the OEM does not expose the switch, do not assume a desktop driver will make it appear.
What about Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion Go and Ryzen Z1 Extreme systems?
AMD’s current pages do not name any of these handheld families as confirmed FSR Upscaling devices. A product name, an RDNA-generation label or a Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor is not enough to establish support. You need all three pieces of evidence: the exact GPU, an OEM-supported driver path and a game with the required integration.
This is why a handheld can run a game that offers older FSR versions while still lacking FSR Upscaling. It may also run a title with native FSR Upscaling but not qualify for AMD’s driver-upgraded route. Treat each combination of device, driver, API and game as a separate compatibility question.

How to use AMD’s supported-games list correctly
AMD describes the catalog as a list of games supporting one or more Redstone technologies. It is a live reference, so entries and requirements can change. Read the feature column and the route indicator for the specific title.
- An asterisk identifies titles with FSR 3.1 integration that require the driver-upgrade feature.
- Other entries may have native integration of one or more Redstone technologies.
- A game listed for one Redstone feature is not automatically listed for every feature.
- The catalog’s desktop GPU and Adrenalin conditions do not prove that a handheld OEM driver supports the same path.
AMD reported more than 30 games at the 2025 FSR 4 launch. That was a launch-era count, not a current total and not a measurement of handheld availability.

The FSR 4 option is missing
Check whether the game uses native integration or the driver-upgrade route, then verify its FSR version, API and feature column in AMD’s catalog. On a handheld, also check whether the OEM driver exposes the feature. Installing the desktop Adrenalin package is not a supported workaround according to AMD’s release notes.

The game has an FSR setting, but image quality does not change
“FSR” may refer to an older upscaler or a different Redstone technology. Confirm the exact label and integration version. Use the game’s documentation and AMD’s feature-specific listing rather than assuming every FSR option is FSR Upscaling.

Frame generation works, but upscaling does not
These features have separate integrations and requirements. Verify the upscaling entry independently; frame-generation support does not certify ML-based upscaling.
A driver update breaks the feature
Return to the handheld maker’s validated driver package and release notes. Handheld power management, display modes and custom firmware are tied to OEM drivers, so a generic desktop package can remove device-specific functionality.
Performance is lower than desktop demonstrations
AMD’s published desktop performance claims, including RX 9070 XT results, are not handheld measurements. No official handheld performance statistic establishes a frame-rate gain for FSR Upscaling, so evaluate a supported device using its own power limit, cooling and game settings.

| Comparison point | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| GPU model and architecture | Is the exact GPU in AMD’s current listed graphics support, and is that listing applicable to an OEM handheld implementation? |
| OEM driver | Does the manufacturer document FSR Upscaling or the required Redstone path in its handheld driver? |
| Game route | Does your title have native integration, or does it require the FSR 3.1 driver-upgrade route? |
| Operating system and API | Is Windows 11 required, and does the game run through DirectX 12? |
| Feature scope | Does the listing specifically say FSR Upscaling, rather than only Frame Generation, Ray Regeneration or Radiance Caching? |
Do not treat a dock, eGPU or accessory as an FSR 4 solution without device-specific OEM evidence. The official material currently available does not validate any particular handheld accessory or named handheld as a guaranteed route.
Bottom line for handheld buyers
FSR 4—now called FSR Upscaling—is not a universal handheld toggle. AMD lists RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics support, but its own Adrenalin notes exclude handheld gaming devices and direct users to OEM drivers. The practical requirement is therefore a complete, documented chain: a qualifying GPU implementation, an OEM-supported driver, the correct DirectX and Windows environment, and a game whose listing specifically supports FSR Upscaling through either native integration or the documented FSR 3.1 driver-upgrade path. Until a manufacturer publishes that chain for a particular handheld, compatibility remains unconfirmed.
