Uninstalling a built-in Windows app removes that app only when Windows exposes an Uninstall command for it. “Built-in” describes how the app arrived with Windows; it does not guarantee that the app can be removed. If Uninstall is available, Windows removes the installed app package or program. If it is not available, the app is one of the components Microsoft does not support removing through the normal interface.
What happens next depends on the app’s installation source, your Windows edition and build, and whether the computer is managed by an organization. A Microsoft Store app can generally be installed again from Store > Library, while an app removed by enterprise policy may need the policy cleared and the device synchronized before an administrator redeploys it. Windows does not publish one universal rule for whether every app’s local files, preferences, permissions, or account data survive removal.
First, check whether the app can actually be uninstalled
Do not infer removability from an app’s name or from the fact that it appears in the Start menu. Microsoft Support explicitly notes that some apps and programs are built into Windows and cannot be uninstalled. The available command is the practical test for an individual app.

- Open Start and select All apps.
- Find the app, right-click it, and choose Uninstall if that command appears.
- Confirm the prompt and allow Windows to complete the removal.
If the menu does not offer Uninstall, that route is not available for that app. Do not treat the absence of the command as an error that requires a registry edit or an untrusted removal utility.

Settings route
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate the app, select the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the operation.
Some applications cannot be removed from Settings even though they are listed there. For a traditional desktop program, Microsoft identifies Control Panel > Programs and Features as the alternative route. The exact app type matters more than the broad label “built-in.”
What Windows removes—and what it does not promise
For a removable app, Windows removes the installed application from the current user or system context represented by that installation. It does not follow that every trace of the app, every associated file, or every permission is guaranteed to disappear. Microsoft’s documentation says that some unvirtualized resources are not cleaned up on uninstall. That is a statement about those resources, not a universal data-retention rule for all Windows apps.
Local files and preferences
The available Microsoft guidance does not establish one outcome for every app’s local databases, downloaded content, preferences, caches, or account tokens. An app may keep data in a location that the uninstall process does not remove, or it may remove data that is part of the app package. The result can also differ between a Store app and a desktop program.
If you need a setting, project, download, save file, or locally stored account record, check that app’s own export, backup, or synchronization instructions before uninstalling. Do not assume that cloud synchronization covers files stored only on the PC, and do not assume that uninstalling is a secure erasure method.

Permissions and shared resources
Uninstalling an app does not create a general guarantee that all permissions or shared resources associated with it are reset. Microsoft’s permissions documentation specifically warns that some unvirtualized resources are not cleaned up. If privacy or compliance is the reason for removal, handle the app’s data and permissions as a separate task and follow the app owner’s documented deletion process.
How to reinstall a Microsoft Store app
When the removed app came from Microsoft Store and is still offered for your Windows account and device, Microsoft’s documented recovery path is the Store Library.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Find the app in the library list. Use the account that originally obtained the app if it is missing.
- Select Install and wait for the download and installation to finish.
This procedure restores an app package; it is not a promise that the app’s previous local state will return. Whether settings and content reappear depends on that app’s storage and synchronization behavior.

If the app is missing from Library
- Confirm that Microsoft Store is signed in with the account associated with the installation.
- Install pending Windows updates and Microsoft Store updates.
- Check that the app is still published for your Windows version and region.
- For a managed PC, ask the administrator whether policy or deployment controls the app.
Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting guidance also recommends using the app’s repair or reset options where they are available. Those actions are alternatives for a malfunctioning installation; they are not evidence that every removed Windows component can be downloaded from Store.

Repair, reset, uninstall, and Windows recovery are different
These commands have different effects, and choosing the wrong one can either leave the problem in place or cause unnecessary data loss.

Microsoft states that Repair and Reset are not available for all apps. Use them only after checking what each option says it will remove. If one app is missing, reinstall that app through its supported source before considering a Windows-level repair.
What to do when Windows will not show Uninstall
The app is a protected Windows component
Some built-in apps are part of Windows and cannot be removed through Start or Settings. In that case, the absence of Uninstall is expected behavior, not a damaged installation. Leave the component installed unless Microsoft provides a supported removal method for your specific edition and build.
The entry is a desktop program
A program installed outside Microsoft Store may use its own uninstaller or appear in Control Panel > Programs and Features rather than in the modern Settings list. Follow the program’s documented uninstaller and restart Windows if it requests one.

The app is controlled by an organization
Work and school computers can enforce app availability through management policy. A user may see an app that cannot be removed, or an app may return after removal, because the device is receiving a deployment assignment. Contact the administrator instead of changing policy locally.

Microsoft documents policy-based removal of selected preinstalled Microsoft Store apps for managed Windows 11 Enterprise and Education devices. This is an administrator feature, not a consumer procedure for every Windows PC. Applicability depends on the edition, management system, policy configuration, and the Windows build covered by Microsoft’s current documentation.
How policy removal is reversed
When an app has been removed by that policy, Microsoft’s documented recovery sequence is administrative: clear the app from the policy selection, synchronize the device, and then reinstall it from Microsoft Store or redeploy it through the organization’s management tooling. A normal user account may not have permission to perform any of those steps.

Do not generalize the policy behavior to Windows Home, personal PCs, or every preinstalled app.

Will uninstalling delete your Windows account or cloud data?
Removing an app is not the same as deleting the Microsoft account or another online account used by that app. The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not define a universal result for cloud-synchronized content. An app may restore settings after you sign in again, or it may require an export and import process.
Before removal, identify where the information lives:
- Only on this PC: copy or export it before uninstalling.
- Synchronized by the app: verify the last successful sync and the account that owns the data.
- Stored in a separate folder or service: preserve that location independently of the app package.
- Protected or regulated information: follow your organization’s retention and deletion procedure rather than relying on Uninstall.
After reinstalling, check the app’s sign-in, import, and synchronization settings before assuming that the old state has returned.

- Identify the app type. Is it a Store app, a desktop program, or a Windows component?
- Record the Windows context. Note whether the PC runs Windows 10 or Windows 11, which edition it uses, and whether it is managed.
- Check for Uninstall. Use Start > All apps or Settings > Apps > Installed apps; use Control Panel for applicable desktop programs.
- Protect needed data. Export or copy local files and verify synchronization before confirming removal.
- Remove the app. Confirm the prompt and restart only if Windows or the app requests it.
- Reinstall from the original source. For a Store app, use Store > Library > Install. For managed devices, use the administrator’s deployment process.
- Troubleshoot before escalating. Apply Store and Windows updates, then try Repair or Reset if the app still exists and those options are offered.
- Reserve Windows recovery for system problems. A Windows Update recovery reinstall repairs the operating system; it is not a single-app replacement.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 support context
The routes above apply broadly to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but labels and available commands can vary by build and edition. Microsoft’s troubleshooting documentation states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; do not interpret a Windows 10 menu that differs from current Windows 11 instructions as evidence that the app is removable or supported.
For any app that matters to work, accessibility, security, or data retention, check the current Microsoft instructions for the exact Windows version and the app publisher’s documentation. There is no complete, universal Microsoft matrix that lists every built-in app, its removability, and its data-cleanup behavior across all builds.
