Uninstalling a sideloaded Android app removes the app and its app-specific data from the device just as uninstalling a Google Play app does. Photos, documents, downloads and other files saved in shared storage may remain, and uninstalling does not delete an online account or data already uploaded to the app’s service.
What “sideloaded” means
A sideloaded app is an Android application installed from outside the Google Play Store, such as an APK downloaded from a website, received from another phone or installed through an alternative app source. “Sideloaded” describes where the app came from; it does not create a separate uninstall category.
Once installed, Android manages the app’s package, permissions and local storage under the same basic rules used for other Android apps. The source can affect security checks and how the app was installed, but it does not give the app a special kind of data that survives every uninstall.

What uninstalling removes
The installed application
Android removes the installed app package, so its code is no longer available to launch. The app disappears from the app drawer and from the normal list of installed applications. Its granted runtime permissions are removed with the app.

App-specific local data
Files stored in the app’s private, app-specific storage are deleted when you uninstall it. This commonly includes settings, locally cached content, databases, login tokens held only on the device, downloaded data intended solely for that app, and files kept in the app’s private directories. Android Developers explicitly advises that app-specific storage should not hold anything a user expects to keep independently of the app, because those files are removed on uninstall.
Google’s Android Help also distinguishes uninstalling from clearing storage: clearing an app’s storage permanently deletes that app’s local data without necessarily removing the app itself. Uninstalling combines removal of the app with removal of its app-specific data.
What may remain after uninstalling
Photos, videos and documents in shared storage
Android treats shared storage differently from private app storage. Shared storage is intended for files that users may view or use with other apps, including photos, videos, documents, exported files and some downloads. Those files can remain after the app is uninstalled.

The exact folder depends on the app and Android version. A file that is visible in a file manager or gallery is more likely to be in shared storage than in the app’s private area, but visibility alone is not proof of where every file is stored. If a file matters, open the app and use its export or backup feature when available, then verify the copy before uninstalling.
The APK file itself
Installing an APK does not necessarily delete the APK file you downloaded. If it is still in Downloads, a messaging attachment folder or another shared location, it is a separate file and may remain after the installed app is removed. You can delete that installer later from your file manager, but do not remove it until you are sure you will not need it for records, troubleshooting or reinstallation.

How to uninstall a sideloaded app
- Save anything you need. Check the app for export, backup or download options. Copy user-visible photos, documents and other important files to another folder, a computer or a trusted cloud service.
- Open the app list. On many Android phones, go to Settings → Apps or Settings → Apps & notifications. Device makers use different labels, so search Settings for Apps if you cannot find the menu.
- Select the app. Tap the sideloaded app in the installed-app list. If it is not visible, use the list’s search field or open the menu that shows all apps, including disabled ones.
- Choose Uninstall. Tap Uninstall, confirm the prompt and wait for Android to finish. If the button is unavailable, the app may have administrator privileges, an accessibility role or another special permission that must be revoked first.
- Check shared files. Open your file manager and review Downloads, Pictures, Movies, Documents and any folder named for the app. Remove leftover installers or exports only after checking their contents.
- Review accounts and security. If you signed in, visit the service’s account or privacy page separately. If the app was suspicious, review sensitive accounts it accessed and change credentials from a trusted device when appropriate.
Some phones also let you press and hold the app icon, tap App info and then choose Uninstall. The wording and location vary by Android release and manufacturer. Google recommends consulting the device maker when instructions for a customized Android interface do not match your screen.
Does uninstalling delete everything?
No. It deletes the installed app and its app-specific local files, but it is not a guaranteed wipe of every trace associated with the app. Shared files can remain, and an online provider can retain account records or synchronized data.

Deleting the app cannot recall information that was already uploaded to a server, sent to another person or copied elsewhere.
If your goal is a clean device, handle each layer separately: uninstall the package, inspect shared folders, remove the downloaded APK if appropriate, and use the service’s account-deletion process for remote data.
Uninstalling versus clearing storage
Clear storage (sometimes labeled Clear data) deletes the app’s local data while leaving the app installed. It can sign you out, reset settings and remove private files. Google describes this as a permanent deletion of the app’s stored data, so use it only after saving anything you need.

Uninstall removes both the app and its app-specific storage. If you plan to reinstall and want to preserve local progress or settings, uninstalling is usually the wrong choice unless the app synchronizes that information to an account or you have made a verified export.
Uninstalling versus archiving
Archiving is a different operation where supported. Google’s archive guidance says archiving removes the app’s software, permissions and temporary files while retaining app data and the app icon so the app can be restored later. Uninstalling removes the app-specific files instead.
Archive controls are not universal. Some archive steps require Android 15 or later and compatible hardware, and the available option depends on the device and app. If you need to preserve local data for a possible return, check whether your phone offers Archive before selecting Uninstall.
What Play Protect changes—and what it does not
Google Play Protect scans apps installed from outside Google Play as well as apps obtained through the Play Store. For an app it considers harmful, Play Protect may warn you, disable the app or remove it automatically. That security action is separate from a user choosing Uninstall.
Installing from an unknown source can put a device and personal information at risk. If you installed an APK because you trusted a particular source but later doubt it, uninstall the app, inspect files it created and review accounts or permissions it may have used. Do not assume that removal reverses information the app already transmitted.

What happens to permissions and access?
When the package is uninstalled, its Android app permissions no longer apply to that package. The app cannot continue running as an installed application or request new access from the device. However, uninstalling does not undo actions performed while it was installed: files it copied to shared storage, messages it sent, screenshots it captured or data it uploaded can remain.
If the app had access to an online account, revoke connected-app access from that account’s security settings when the provider offers such a control. If you reused a password in the app, change it, especially when the APK came from an unverified source.
Does uninstalling delete the app’s account?
Usually, no. Android’s uninstall process concerns the software and local device storage. An account held by the app provider is a separate service record. Uninstalling may sign you out locally because the app’s private tokens are removed, but it does not establish that the provider deleted your profile, subscriptions, cloud files, messages or backups.
To remove remote data, sign in through the provider’s documented account or privacy controls, look for account deletion or data-deletion instructions, and complete any identity confirmation it requires. If you cannot access the app after uninstalling, use the provider’s website or support channel. Keep in mind that deletion policies, retention periods and legal exceptions are controlled by that provider rather than Android.

If the app will not uninstall
The Uninstall button is disabled
Some apps are granted device-administrator privileges or special management roles. Open Settings and search for Device admin apps, Device administrators, Accessibility or VPN, depending on the role involved. Remove the app’s relevant privilege, return to its App info page and try Uninstall again. A work-managed phone may block removal; in that case, contact the organization that manages the device.

Android reports that the app is not installed
The APK may have been removed already, disabled, installed for another user profile or replaced by a different package name. Check the complete installed-app list and any work or secondary profile. If the APK file remains in Downloads, deleting that file removes only the installer, not an installed package.
Play Protect removed or disabled it
If Play Protect acted first, the app may no longer appear as a normal installed app. Review the Play Protect notification and scan result, then inspect shared folders and account activity. Do not reinstall the APK merely to recover data unless you have verified its source and understand the security risk.
Before you tap Uninstall: a practical checklist
- Identify whether the app stores anything only on the device.
- Export projects, notes, authenticator data or other content the app says it can export.
- Copy important photos, videos and documents from shared folders.
- Check whether the APK installer is still in Downloads or another shared folder.
- Record any account or subscription details you may need for the provider’s website.
- Revoke unusual account connections and change reused passwords if the app was untrusted.
- Choose Archive instead when your device supports it and retaining app data matters.
