When you transfer a Pokémon to Professor Willow in Pokémon GO, it leaves your Pokémon storage permanently. In exchange, the game awards Candy and frees storage space. Niantic’s Help Center warns that a transferred Pokémon cannot be recovered, so review every selection before confirming.
“Transfer” can also mean sending a Pokémon to Pokémon HOME or to a compatible Nintendo Switch game. Those are separate destinations with different rules, and neither route lets the Pokémon return to Pokémon GO.
What a normal transfer to Professor Willow does
The standard in-game Transfer command hands the selected Pokémon to Professor Willow. The Pokémon is removed from your collection immediately after confirmation. You no longer see it in your Pokémon storage, and there is no restore or undo command in Pokémon GO.
The exchange has two practical benefits: you receive Candy and you recover the storage space that Pokémon occupied. Niantic’s Help Center confirms the Candy reward but does not state a universal Candy amount in its transfer guidance. Do not assume that every transfer produces the same quantity or that a particular species always pays a fixed amount based on the information provided in that article.

The most important consequence is permanence. Niantic states: “You’ll receive Candy in exchange for transferring a Pokémon, but be careful: you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.” Treat the confirmation screen as a final deletion rather than a temporary move.
What does not happen
- A transfer to Professor Willow is not a trade with another Trainer.
- The Pokémon does not move to Pokémon HOME or to a Nintendo Switch game.
- You cannot reopen a transfer history and restore the Pokémon later.
- The transfer does not preserve a copy in your account for future use.
How to transfer one Pokémon
Niantic’s current Help Center path starts from the map view. Labels can change slightly as the app is updated, so follow the confirmation wording shown by your version of Pokémon GO.
- From Map View, tap the Main Menu button.
- Tap Pokémon to open your storage.
- Tap the Pokémon you want to remove.
- Open the Pokémon’s menu and choose Transfer.
- Read the warning on the confirmation prompt. Confirm only when you are certain the selected Pokémon is expendable.
After confirmation, the Pokémon disappears from storage, Candy is awarded, and the corresponding storage slot becomes available. Because the action is irreversible, avoid tapping through the warning automatically.
How to transfer several Pokémon at once
Bulk transfer is useful when you need to clear many ordinary Pokémon, but it has stricter safeguards than a single transfer.
- Open Main Menu > Pokémon from Map View.
- Press and hold one eligible Pokémon until selection mode starts.
- Tap each additional eligible Pokémon you want to include.
- Tap Transfer and inspect the selected group and warning.
- Confirm only after checking that no rare, high-value, or sentimental Pokémon is included.
If the game will not let you select a particular Pokémon, that is usually an eligibility restriction rather than a storage problem. Remove it from the batch and check its status before trying again.

Bulk-transfer safeguards
- Multiple Shiny Pokémon cannot be transferred in one batch.
- Multiple Lucky Pokémon cannot be transferred in one batch.
- Multiple Pokémon whose Buddy status is Good Buddy or higher cannot be transferred in one batch.
- To select multiple Legendary or Mythical Pokémon, first enable the relevant option in the app’s settings.
- Some Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, including Mew and Celebi, cannot be selected for transfer.
These limits are designed to make accidental mass deletion less likely. They do not make a transfer reversible; a single eligible Pokémon can still be permanently removed if you confirm it.
Pokémon that cannot be transferred normally
Before troubleshooting a failed transfer, check whether the Pokémon has one of the protected statuses listed by Niantic.
Active Buddy Pokémon
A Pokémon currently assigned as your active Buddy cannot be transferred. If you intend to remove it, change your active Buddy first, then return to the Pokémon’s menu and check whether Transfer is available.
Favorited Pokémon
Favorites are blocked from transfer. Remove the favorite designation only if you have deliberately decided that the Pokémon should be deleted. Keeping the favorite lock in place is a useful safety step for anything you may want later.
Pokémon defending a Gym
A Pokémon stationed in a Gym cannot be transferred while it is defending that Gym. It must no longer be assigned there before the Transfer command becomes available.

Legendary and Mythical Pokémon
Bulk selection of Legendary or Mythical Pokémon requires an explicit settings option. Even with that option enabled, certain species remain unavailable for selection; Niantic specifically identifies Mew and Celebi among the Pokémon that cannot be selected. If one of these Pokémon is important to you, do not use a broad search-and-select operation without checking each result.
How the three “transfer” destinations differ
Choosing the destination matters more than the word used in the interface. The following actions have different outcomes.

Sending Pokémon to Pokémon HOME
Pokémon HOME is a separate destination, not a backup or recovery bin for Pokémon GO. To use it, link the Pokémon GO account to the Pokémon HOME account and use the GO Transporter. Sending consumes GO Transporter Energy, so the transfer is subject to that system’s energy requirement rather than the ordinary Professor Willow exchange.
After a send, you must receive the Pokémon in Pokémon HOME. Niantic explains that it will not appear in the HOME Boxes until HOME has accepted the delivery. This extra receiving step can make a transfer look incomplete if you check the Boxes immediately after sending from GO.
HOME changes to check before sending
- Some Pokémon cannot be sent to HOME at all, so verify eligibility in the send screen.
- Lucky status does not remain attached after the Pokémon is sent.
- Purified status does not remain attached after the Pokémon is sent.
- A Pokémon’s form may change during the move, so compare the form rules for the destination before confirming.
- Once sent, the Pokémon cannot be returned to Pokémon GO. Niantic’s Help Center explicitly states that Pokémon cannot be sent from Pokémon HOME to Pokémon GO.
Use HOME when your goal is to place an eligible Pokémon in that broader storage ecosystem, not when you simply want Candy or a quick way to clear GO storage.

Sending Pokémon to a Nintendo Switch and Pokémon: Let’s Go
The supported Switch workflow is separate from both Professor Willow transfers and Pokémon HOME. Pokémon GO connects to Pokémon: Let’s Go, and eligible Pokémon are moved into the game’s GO Park complex.
A successful send awards Candy and XP in the stated workflow. The first send also triggers a Mystery Box. These rewards belong to the Switch connection and should not be confused with the Candy-only exchange associated with transferring to Professor Willow.
The route is one-way: after a Pokémon has been sent into the supported Pokémon: Let’s Go destination, it cannot be transferred back to Pokémon GO. Confirm that the species and form are supported and that you are comfortable losing its GO availability before starting the connection.

Trading is another action that players sometimes call a transfer, but it has a different outcome. Niantic’s trading guidance requires Trainers to meet in person. A traded Pokémon moves to another player rather than being deleted, and its CP, HP, and other stats can change as part of the trade.

If your goal is to reclaim storage and receive Candy, use Professor Willow’s Transfer command. Neither process should be treated as a method for making a recoverable backup.

A safe decision process before you confirm
- Identify the destination. Decide whether you mean Professor Willow, Pokémon HOME, or a compatible Switch game. The destinations are not interchangeable.
- Check irreplaceability. Review the Pokémon’s species, form, appraisal information, favorite status, Buddy relationship, and any personal significance.
- Check protected states. Confirm that it is not your active Buddy and is not defending a Gym. For bulk actions, look for Shiny, Lucky, Legendary, Mythical, and Good Buddy-and-above Pokémon.
- Review one final time. In bulk selection, scroll through every selected Pokémon rather than relying only on a search result.
- Confirm only when the loss is acceptable. Once the warning is accepted, the Pokémon cannot be restored to Pokémon GO.
What to do if a transfer option is missing
Start with the status of the individual Pokémon. A favorite, active Buddy, or Gym defender is expected to lack a normal Transfer option. For a Legendary or Mythical batch, open the app settings and enable the setting that permits multiple selections, while remembering that Mew, Celebi, and other restricted Pokémon may still be unavailable.
If you are trying to use HOME, check the account link, GO Transporter Energy, and the Pokémon’s eligibility. If the Pokémon was sent successfully but is not visible in HOME, open HOME and receive the incoming transfer before checking the HOME Boxes.
For the Switch route, confirm that the connection is to the supported Pokémon: Let’s Go workflow and that the Pokémon qualifies for that destination. Do not send it as a test: neither the HOME route nor the Switch route provides a path back into Pokémon GO.

- Choose Transfer to Professor Willow when you intentionally want the Pokémon gone, need storage space, and want Candy.
- Choose Pokémon HOME when you want an eligible Pokémon in HOME and accept the energy cost, one-way movement, possible form change, and loss of Lucky or Purified status.
- Choose the Switch / Pokémon: Let’s Go route when you want the Pokémon in the GO Park, along with its stated Candy and XP rewards and the first-send Mystery Box.
- Choose trade when another Trainer should receive the Pokémon instead of it being deleted.
For every destination, the final confirmation is consequential. Verify the Pokémon and destination first, because Pokémon GO does not provide a recovery path after the transfer is completed.
