On an eligible Android phone or tablet, replacing Google Assistant with Gemini makes Gemini the primary assistant opened by “Hey Google,” a touch gesture, or a power-button shortcut. Gemini can answer questions, plan trips, control several phone settings, take a photo or screenshot, and perform other actions. Google Assistant may still detect the wake phrase and help route quick voice actions that Gemini does not yet handle directly.
This is not a complete feature-for-feature replacement. Google lists gaps such as Interpreter mode and some podcast, news, radio, and third-party music providers. The change can also reach certain watches, compatible earbuds or headphones, and Android Auto projected from the phone, while Nest speakers, displays, and cars with Google built-in follow different rules.
What changes immediately on your phone
Gemini becomes the phone or tablet’s primary mobile assistant after you enable it. The normal assistant entry points still work, but they open Gemini instead of the familiar Google Assistant interface. Depending on the device, those entry points include saying “Hey Google”, swiping from a corner, holding a home or power button, or using another manufacturer-defined touch shortcut.
Google describes the voice path as a handoff rather than a total removal of Assistant. Assistant can detect the wake phrase, use Voice Match, and route the request to Gemini. It may also complete a familiar quick voice action when Gemini does not support that action directly. The visible response can therefore come from Gemini even though Assistant participated in recognizing or routing the request.

Tasks Gemini can handle
Gemini is intended for conversational questions and multi-step help, including travel planning. As the primary assistant it can also control selected Android functions. Google’s current examples include:
- Turning Wi-Fi or Bluetooth on or off.
- Enabling or disabling Do Not Disturb.
- Changing the phone’s volume.
- Taking a photo or screenshot.
- Powering off the device.
Availability of an individual action can depend on your Android version, permissions, notification access, account type, language, and region. The current Device assistance help page is the appropriate reference when an action is missing or behaves differently on your phone.
Features that do not have full parity
Google explicitly says that some Google Assistant features and services are not supported in Gemini. The examples below are not a promise that every other Assistant feature works either; they are the gaps Google currently identifies.

Support can change as Google updates Gemini. If a particular command matters to you, test that command before relying on the replacement and keep the switch-back instructions available while Assistant remains offered on your device.

Which devices are actually affected
The core change concerns the mobile assistant on eligible Android phones and tablets. It does not mean that every product signed in to the same Google Account changes at once. Google’s August 6, 2026 announcement separates mobile devices, phone-paired accessories, and products that have Assistant built in.

Pixel Tablet’s context-dependent behavior
A Pixel Tablet can use Gemini as the assistant while it is unlocked. When the tablet is locked or in Hub Mode, Assistant handles requests instead. This is why testing only the unlocked tablet does not necessarily predict what happens from the dock or lock screen.
Eligibility: why the Gemini option may be missing
Gemini mobile availability depends on the device, Google Account, language, country or territory, and Google’s staged rollout. On Android, Google’s setup instructions require the Google app to be the default assist app before Gemini can be selected as the mobile assistant. Menu names differ among manufacturers and Android releases.
Some capabilities are unavailable on work or school accounts, supervised accounts, or in particular languages and regions. If the option is absent, confirm that you are using a personal account where appropriate, that the device and language are supported, and that the Google app is selected as the default digital assistant. How to replace Assistant with Gemini
- Install or open Gemini. Use the Gemini app on the Android phone or tablet and sign in to the Google Account you intend to use.
- Make sure the Google app is the assist app. In Android Settings, open the area for default apps, then find Digital assistant app or Default digital assistant. Select the Google app if another app is currently chosen. The exact path varies by manufacturer.
- Choose Gemini in the Gemini app. Open Gemini, tap your profile picture, and use the option to select Gemini as the mobile assistant when it is offered. Follow the confirmation screens.
- Test every activation method. Try “Hey Google,” your touch or power-button shortcut, and any lock-screen gesture you normally use. Also test the commands you depend on, such as media playback, smart-home control, or Interpreter mode.
- Review permissions and activity settings. Actions such as device controls may require notification or other permissions. Decide whether Voice Match and Gemini Apps Activity should remain enabled before using Gemini regularly.

How to switch from Gemini to Google Assistant
If Assistant is still available on your device, open the Gemini app, tap your profile picture, and choose Switch to Google Assistant. Confirm the change when prompted. The wording can vary slightly by app version.
You can also use Android’s default-assistant setting. Open Settings, search for default digital assistant app, and choose the Google app, another available assistant, or None. Manufacturer menus may place this under Apps, Default apps, Gestures, or Assist and voice input. Changing the default controls button and gesture activation; it does not necessarily uninstall Gemini.

Removing the Gemini app alone does not automatically remove Gemini as the default assistant. If your goal is to stop “Hey Google” or a button shortcut from opening Gemini, change the default assistant or activation setting first. Google documents app-management and removal behavior in Manage or delete the Gemini app on your Android device.

The switch-back option may disappear
In an August 6, 2026 announcement, Google Home & Nest Community Manager Nandini Thakur wrote: “Starting on September 3rd, Google Assistant on your mobile device is being discontinued, and Gemini will be the voice assistant experience on Android.” Google said the removal would roll out over several weeks. Once Assistant access has been removed for your account and affected device, the announcement says you will no longer be able to use or switch back to Assistant there.
That is a rollout condition, not a universal promise that every Android device loses the option on the same day. Check the controls currently shown on your phone, tablet, and paired accessories. The dated announcement is available at Google Assistant Community.

When Gemini is the mobile assistant, Assistant can still listen for the wake phrase and apply Voice Match before routing the request to Gemini. Google distinguishes standby detection from an activated interaction; do not assume that every sound near the phone is uploaded or saved as a conversation.

When Assistant helps Gemini complete a quick voice action, Google says the interaction is stored in Gemini Apps Activity according to your Keep Activity setting. You can review or delete that activity in your Google Account. Keeping Activity on can preserve history and personalization; turning it off changes what is retained and may limit some history-based features.

What changes if you return to Assistant
If you switch back to Assistant, Assistant interactions are saved to your Google Account when Web & App Activity is enabled. Existing Gemini Apps Activity is not automatically deleted when you make the switch. Review both activity controls if you want to remove earlier Gemini records as well as control future Assistant records.

Troubleshooting common surprises
“Hey Google” opens the wrong assistant
Check the default digital-assistant app, then verify that the Google app is selected where Gemini requires it. Recheck Gemini’s own assistant selection and Voice Match. A manufacturer update can rename or relocate these controls.
A command that worked before now fails
Determine whether the command is one of Google’s documented gaps, especially Interpreter mode or a media-provider request. If Assistant is still offered, use Switch to Google Assistant and test again. If the option is gone, the mobile rollout may already have removed Assistant access.
A phone change seems to affect a watch or car
Identify the connection type. A compatible paired watch, earbud, headphone, or Android Auto projection can follow the phone’s transition. A Nest speaker, standalone display, or car with Google built-in is governed separately and may continue using Assistant.
Gemini cannot change a setting
Check notification and device-assistance permissions, unlock the phone if required, and retry with a supported command. Some actions are intentionally limited by device state, account type, language, or region.
Bottom line for choosing
Choose Gemini if you want a conversational assistant that can plan, answer questions, and control a growing set of Android functions from the same “Hey Google” and touch shortcuts. Keep testing the specific media, translation, routine, and accessory features you rely on: Google does not document full Assistant parity, and the ability to switch back is becoming rollout-dependent after September 3, 2026.
