For an eligible digital game or DLC pre-ordered from Nintendo eShop in the United States, Nintendo normally waits until no earlier than seven days before release to process payment. After the charge succeeds, the full game downloads to your Switch as a non-playable preload. At release, a small update unlocks the software. You cannot play the preload early.
Cancellation is generally available in the United States only before payment is processed. Once Nintendo has charged a digital purchase, its policy says sales are final unless Nintendo approves an exception or applicable law requires a refund. Physical pre-purchases from Nintendo Store follow a different schedule: Nintendo charges immediately and says the item ships one to three business days after release. Region, seller, title eligibility, and payment method can change the details.

Digital eShop pre-order versus physical Nintendo Store pre-purchase
The word “pre-order” covers two different transactions. A digital eShop order prepares software on your console, while a physical Nintendo Store pre-purchase reserves a product for shipment. Their charge, delivery, and cancellation rules are not interchangeable.

These are Nintendo of America terms. A third-party retailer can set its own charge and shipping schedule, so its checkout terms control a physical order placed elsewhere. Nintendo’s overview of the distinction is in its Pre-Orders and Pre-Purchases support article.

How a digital Nintendo Switch pre-order works
1. Select an eligible unreleased title
Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch or use Nintendo’s online store while signed in to the Nintendo Account that will own the game. Only selected unreleased Nintendo Switch games and downloadable content offer a pre-order option. If a title has no pre-order button, it is not eligible through that listing, or the release and sales conditions for your account or region differ.
During checkout, choose a payment method. The U.S. eShop FAQ lists credit card, PayPal, available eShop funds, and a Nintendo Switch Game Voucher where the title qualifies. Gold Points can also be applied. Nintendo’s Nintendo eShop Pre-Order and Pre-Load FAQ explains that the points available when payment is collected are used up to the purchase price.
2. Wait for Nintendo’s payment window
Nintendo’s official wording is: “When you pre-order content on Nintendo eShop, payment will not be processed until, at earliest, 7 days before the game is released.” “At earliest” matters: it is the beginning of the collection window, not a promise that every order is charged at exactly the same moment. Keep the selected funding source valid through that period.

Nintendo can send an email or account notification when payment is processed, depending on the contact details and settings on the account.
3. The console downloads the preload
After successful payment, the Switch downloads the complete game or DLC data. Nintendo says, “When a game or DLC is pre-loaded, the full content is downloaded to your console.” The HOME Menu icon appears, allowing you to see the installed software and its release countdown or related information, but the program is intentionally locked.
Preloading requires enough free storage and a usable internet connection. A microSD card may be necessary if internal storage is full, but the card itself does not bypass the release lock. Download time depends on the title’s size, network speed, Nintendo’s servers, and whether the console is being used for another download.
4. Install the release update
At the official release, Nintendo makes a small update available that changes the preloaded files from locked to playable. The Switch can prompt you to download it when the console is online. If the console is connected to the internet and placed in sleep mode, Nintendo says update data can download and install automatically under the applicable system settings.

The support material establishes availability at release, not one universal clock time for every game or region. Do not assume that a preorder grants early access, or that the unlock will occur at midnight in your local time. If the update does not appear immediately, connect the console, open the software icon, check for an update, and verify the published release timing for your region.
When does Nintendo charge for a pre-order?
For the U.S. digital eShop process, collection starts no earlier than seven days before release. Nintendo selects the actual processing point within its policy window. The amount normally reflects the price shown for the preorder, with eligible account funds, Gold Points, or other selected payment sources applied according to Nintendo’s checkout rules.
A Game Voucher is not set aside when you place the preorder. Nintendo checks whether a valid voucher is available when it attempts collection. If you spend your vouchers after ordering and none remains when payment is due, the charge can fail and Nintendo can cancel the preorder. The same practical risk applies to an expired card, a declined PayPal transaction, or insufficient eShop funds.
Before the collection window opens, check the Nintendo Account’s payment method, expiration date, billing details, account balance, and available voucher or points balance. A successful preorder confirmation is not a substitute for having the funds available on the processing date.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can you play a preloaded game before release?
No. The preload contains the full files so that most of the download work is finished, but Nintendo keeps the software non-playable until the official release and its unlock update. Launching the HOME Menu icon before then produces a release-lock message or otherwise prevents gameplay.
Preloading therefore saves time on release day; it does not provide an early-access entitlement. Any separate early-access period would have to be an expressly stated feature of that game’s offer, not a consequence of owning a standard eShop preorder.
Can you cancel a Nintendo Switch game pre-order?
U.S. digital eShop orders
Nintendo of America says you can cancel an eShop preorder at any time before payment is processed, with the practical deadline being up to seven days before release because collection may begin then. Use the Nintendo Account that placed the order. Nintendo’s Pre-Orders and Pre-Purchases page provides the account and cancellation guidance.

Once payment has been processed, the ordinary pre-payment cancellation window has ended. Nintendo’s U.S. Refunds for Digital Products policy says digital payments are final and non-refundable except where Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires one. A request after payment is therefore not the same as canceling an unpaid preorder, and approval is not automatic.
Physical Nintendo Store orders
For a physical pre-purchase made through Nintendo Store, Nintendo directs customers to contact support to request cancellation. Because the store charges immediately, do not apply the eShop’s seven-day payment rule. A retailer other than Nintendo can impose different cancellation, authorization, and shipping terms.
What happens if the preorder payment fails?
Nintendo gives insufficient funds and an expired card as examples of failed collection. A failed attempt can result in Nintendo canceling the preorder rather than leaving it active indefinitely. You may then preorder again before release if the listing still accepts preorders, or purchase the game after it launches.
- Read the cancellation or payment-failure email and confirm which Nintendo Account received it.
- Check the card, PayPal account, eShop balance, voucher availability, and billing information you intended to use.
- If the title is still offered for preorder, place a new order with a working payment source.
- If the preorder window has closed, buy the digital game after release or use the retailer and edition that are available in your region.
Do not assume that adding money after a failed attempt will automatically revive the original order. The support article titled Nintendo eShop Pre-Order was Canceled describes the cancellation scenario.
What happens to a preorder bonus code?
If Nintendo or the game’s offer includes a bonus code, Nintendo says it becomes available after payment has been processed and the game has preloaded. The code appears on the emailed receipt and in the Nintendo Account’s purchase history. This means a bonus promised for a preorder may not be delivered when you first place the order; the trigger is successful payment and preload.
Bonus availability, redemption deadlines, and regional eligibility belong to the specific offer. Save the receipt email and check purchase history if the code is not visible after those two events have occurred.
Preparing your Switch for the preload
A preorder can be technically successful while the download is delayed by the console’s condition. Complete these checks before Nintendo’s payment window:

- Leave enough free storage for the full game or DLC and any required update. The preload is the complete content, not a small placeholder.
- Connect the console to a stable internet connection and keep it powered or in sleep mode with online connectivity enabled.
- Install current system updates if the console requests one; an outdated system can interfere with downloads or launch checks.
- Confirm the correct Nintendo Account is signed in. The purchase, cancellation rights, receipt, and bonus code are tied to that account.
- Review the release date shown in the listing and your region’s store. Release timing can vary by territory, and Nintendo does not promise one global release-hour schedule.
If storage is insufficient, free space by archiving software or use compatible expandable storage, then resume the download. Archiving removes the local game data while retaining the software icon and save data; you would need to download the title again, so avoid doing this immediately before release unless necessary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.United Kingdom and other regional terms
Do not transplant U.S. cancellation language to another country. Nintendo UK describes a statutory 14-day cancellation right for preorders, subject to rules that can change once digital-content performance begins, and also describes an additional voluntary cancellation right before download. Its wording and conditions are in the Nintendo eShop Pre-Order and Pre-Load FAQ.

A practical preorder timeline
| Time | Digital eShop event | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Order day | You select an eligible unreleased game, choose payment, and receive a preorder confirmation. | Record the Nintendo Account, release date, price, and selected funding source. |
| Before the collection window | The order is pending; no playable software is delivered. | Keep funds, card details, PayPal authorization, or voucher availability ready. |
| No earlier than seven days before release (U.S. policy) | Nintendo attempts payment. | Check for a confirmation or failure notice and resolve any issue promptly. |
| After successful payment | The full game or DLC preloads and the HOME Menu icon appears, still locked. | Confirm storage and let the download finish. |
| Release | A small update becomes available to unlock play. | Connect online, install the update, and then launch the game. |
Common mistakes and their fixes
Expecting an early playable copy
The preload is deliberately non-playable. Wait for the official release and install the unlock update.
Spending a voucher after placing the preorder
Nintendo does not reserve the voucher at checkout. Keep one available through payment processing or choose another dependable payment source.
Assuming a failed charge will retry forever
Nintendo can cancel the order after a failed collection. Watch account email, then reorder if the title is still eligible.
Confusing a physical shipment with a digital download
Nintendo Store physical pre-purchases are charged immediately and ship one to three business days after release under the cited U.S. terms. They do not preload to a console.
Using another country’s refund rule
U.S., U.K., and other jurisdictions can provide different statutory and voluntary rights. Follow the policy for your account’s country and seller.
Quick Recap
Final checklist before you pre-order
- Verify that the game or DLC is marked eligible for preorder in your region.
- Note the release date, edition, price, and any bonus conditions.
- Select a payment source that will remain valid when Nintendo collects payment.
- Keep adequate console storage and a reliable internet connection for the full preload.
- Understand that the software will remain locked until release and a small update installs.
- If you may change your mind, cancel before payment is processed; after payment, the U.S. digital policy generally treats the sale as final.
- For a physical purchase, read the seller’s own charge, shipping, and cancellation terms.
