When you lose your voice, your vocal folds may be too swollen or irritated to vibrate normally as air passes from your lungs. A cold, acute laryngitis, or vocal overuse commonly causes this change. Many short-term cases improve with time and less speaking, but breathing trouble is an emergency, and persistent or complete voice loss needs medical attention.
What is happening when your voice disappears?
Your voice is made in the larynx, or voice box. Air from your lungs passes through two vocal folds, which come together and vibrate to create sound. Irritation, swelling, or another problem affecting the folds can change that vibration. Your voice may sound hoarse, weak, or breathy—or you may be unable to produce it normally.
Voice loss is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Acute laryngitis—often associated with a viral cold or flu—and vocal strain are common causes, but other conditions can affect the voice too. The cause cannot be determined from voice loss alone.

What can cause voice loss?
Infection or inflammation
Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx. It commonly occurs with a respiratory infection and can cause hoarseness or temporary voice loss. The NHS says laryngitis usually goes away by itself within one to two weeks: NHS: Laryngitis.

Vocal overuse or strain
Prolonged or loud talking, cheering, singing, or speaking over background noise can strain the voice and cause temporary hoarseness. Continuing to force your voice may add strain when it needs rest.
Other causes
Allergies, reflux, irritants, chronic coughing, vocal-fold lesions such as nodules or polyps, injury, vocal-fold paralysis, neurological conditions, thyroid problems, and—less commonly—cancer can also affect the voice. Persistent or recurrent hoarseness should not be self-diagnosed; a clinician can assess the cause. What to do while your voice recovers
- Speak as little as practical. Rest your voice and avoid shouting, singing, crying, or whispering while hoarse. Whispering can also strain the voice.
- Drink fluids. Staying hydrated is a supportive measure, not a guaranteed cure.
- Consider adding moisture to the air. MedlinePlus suggests using a vaporizer; this may add moisture but does not treat the underlying cause. See MedlinePlus: Hoarseness.
- Do not assume you need an antibiotic or other medicine. Laryngitis is often viral, so antibiotics may not help. A clinician should decide whether medication or another treatment is appropriate.
If your voice suddenly disappears during strenuous singing or other intense vocal use, NIDCD warns that this may signal bleeding into a vocal fold. Stop using your voice completely and seek prompt medical attention; do not repeatedly test whether it has returned. See NIDCD: Hoarseness.
When should you seek medical help?
Get emergency help for breathing difficulty
Difficulty breathing needs immediate attention. The NHS advises calling emergency services or going to emergency care for breathing difficulty associated with laryngitis: NHS: Laryngitis.

Seek urgent advice for severe pain or swallowing difficulty
The NHS advises urgent medical help for severe pain or difficulty swallowing. NIDCD also lists coughing blood, a lump in the neck, pain when speaking or swallowing, and complete voice loss lasting more than a few days among reasons to see a doctor.
Arrange assessment if hoarseness persists
Official guidance gives different time thresholds in different contexts. The NHS says to seek help if laryngitis has not improved after two weeks. NIDCD advises seeing a doctor for hoarseness lasting more than three weeks, especially without a cold or flu. MedlinePlus says to get hoarseness checked if it continues beyond four weeks and lists reasons to contact a clinician sooner. These are source-specific guidance points, not one universal deadline; seek care earlier if symptoms are concerning.

Use extra caution with infants and young children
Do not apply adult timeframes to a baby or young child. MedlinePlus advises contacting a clinician for hoarseness in an infant under three months, or if a small child has breathing or swallowing difficulty or is drooling.

What if voice loss does not resolve?
A clinician can assess symptoms and decide whether further evaluation is needed. For persistent voice problems, an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist may examine the vocal folds with an endoscope. Depending on the cause, treatment may include voice rest, voice therapy, or—in some cases—surgery for a vocal-fold lesion. The appropriate treatment depends on the diagnosis; do not start medication or pursue a procedure without clinical guidance.
