Favoriting a Pokémon in Pokémon GO marks it with a star and protects it from being transferred. The Pokémon remains in your collection, and you can find it later by searching favorite in the Pokémon inventory. It is a safety feature, not a power-up: Niantic does not document any increase to CP, stats, battle performance, or other gameplay benefits from favoriting.
What the Favorite star does
Open a Pokémon from your collection and tap the star on its summary screen. That status places the Pokémon on your favorites list and blocks it from the transfer flow while the star remains active. Niantic’s Help Center states: “Favorited Pokémon can’t be transferred until they’re removed from the list.” See Viewing a Pokémon Summary for the documented summary controls.
The protection matters because a transfer is permanent. Once a Pokémon is transferred, it cannot be recovered, so the star creates an extra checkpoint before you make an irreversible collection decision. It does not create a copy, reserve Candy, or alter the Pokémon itself; it changes whether that Pokémon can be selected for transfer.

- The Pokémon’s CP, appraisal, moves, level, type, size, and other displayed information are not documented as changing when you favorite it.
- Niantic does not describe a favorite as a battle bonus, stat modifier, evolution boost, or power-up effect.
- The official guidance specifically establishes transfer prevention. It does not claim that favoriting blocks every other action, such as evolving, powering up, trading, or assigning the Pokémon elsewhere.
How to favorite a Pokémon
- Open Pokémon GO and enter your Pokémon collection.
- Tap the Pokémon you want to protect to open its summary.
- Tap the star icon on the summary screen. When the star is active, the Pokémon is favorited.
The exact placement or appearance of controls can change with app updates, but the documented action is the same: use the star on the Pokémon’s summary. If you do not see the control, close and reopen the summary, check that the app has finished loading, and consult Niantic’s current summary instructions. Interface details in support documentation can change over time; the behavior described here reflects the Help Center material available on October 13, 2026.

How to find your favorites
Favorites are searchable, which is useful when your collection is too large to scan manually. From the Pokémon inventory, open the search field and enter favorite. The inventory filter then shows Pokémon marked with the Favorite status. Niantic documents this exact search term in Searching & Filtering your Pokémon Inventory.
A practical search routine
- Open the Pokémon collection.
- Tap the collection’s search box.
- Type
favoriteexactly as the documented filter term. - Review the results before selecting a Pokémon for another action.
- Clear the search when you want to return to the full collection.
Searching is only a way to display the marked Pokémon; it does not add or remove the star. To change a favorite, open the individual Pokémon’s summary and use the star control there.
Can you transfer a favorited Pokémon?
Not while it is favorited. The transfer restriction remains in place until you remove the Pokémon from the favorites list. If you try to transfer one, first return to its summary, tap the active star to unfavorite it, and then start the transfer flow again.

Safe transfer procedure
- Use the
favoritesearch to bring up the protected Pokémon, or locate it normally in your collection. - Open the Pokémon’s summary and check that you have selected the intended individual. This is especially important when several Pokémon share the same species or name.
- Tap the star to remove the Favorite status.
- Start the transfer command and read the confirmation screen carefully.
- Confirm only after checking the Pokémon’s identity and any other warning shown by the game.
Transfers cannot be undone. Niantic’s Transferring Pokémon guidance explains the restriction and the irreversible nature of the action. Removing the star is therefore a deliberate step that should happen only when you have decided the Pokémon no longer needs that safeguard.
Favorite versus tag: the distinction
Favorite and tags solve different collection problems. Favorite is a star-based status with a documented transfer block. Tags are a separate categorization feature for organizing Pokémon into groups. A tag can help you label a team, project, event group, or trading shortlist, but the cited support material does not describe tags as a substitute for the transfer protection provided by Favorite.

You can use both systems on the same Pokémon when that is useful: the star for transfer safety and a tag for a category. They remain independent statuses, so adding a tag does not automatically favorite a Pokémon, and favoriting does not automatically assign a tag.

What favoriting does not mean
It is not a gameplay upgrade
There is no documented CP increase, appraisal improvement, extra damage, additional defense, better move performance, or other competitive advantage from tapping the star. If you are deciding whether to favorite a Pokémon, think of the action as collection housekeeping and mistake prevention, not optimization.
It is not a universal lock
The official sources establish a block on transfer specifically. They do not say that the star prevents evolution, powering up, trading, renaming, or every other operation. Treat the favorite as protection against accidental transfer rather than a claim that the Pokémon is locked against all changes.
It is not a backup
A favorite does not create a second copy or restore point. If you intentionally remove the star and transfer the Pokémon, the transfer remains permanent. Keep the star active on anything you may later regret losing, and use tags or search terms for additional organization.

When favoriting is useful
Rare or hard-to-replace Pokémon
Mark Pokémon that would be difficult to obtain again, such as an individual you are saving for a future decision. The star keeps that Pokémon out of the transfer flow until you explicitly remove the protection.
Potential appraisal or move decisions
If you have not finished evaluating a Pokémon, favoriting it can prevent a rushed transfer while you compare it with others. The star does not perform the evaluation; it simply leaves the Pokémon available for later review.

Collections that are being cleaned up
During a large transfer session, search favorite first and inspect the results. This creates a quick list of Pokémon that should not be included unless you intentionally unfavorite them.

Troubleshooting the Favorite workflow
The Pokémon still appears in a normal collection view
That is expected. Favoriting does not remove the Pokémon from your inventory or move it to a separate storage area. Use the favorite search when you want to isolate all marked Pokémon.
The transfer option is unavailable
Open the Pokémon’s summary and check the star. A favorited Pokémon cannot be transferred while the Favorite status is active. Remove the star, then return to the transfer flow.
The search returns no results
Confirm that you are searching inside the Pokémon inventory rather than another in-game search field, and enter the documented term favorite. If the results still look wrong, clear other filters before trying again. Search and filtering labels may vary as the app changes, so compare the current behavior with Niantic’s inventory search guidance.
You are unsure whether to remove the star
Leave it active until you are certain. Removing the Favorite status is reversible, but confirming a transfer is not. Verify the Pokémon’s species, individual, and intended action before proceeding.
A simple collection-safety checklist
- Favorite Pokémon you do not want to transfer accidentally.
- Use
favoriteto review protected Pokémon before a large cleanup. - Use tags when you need categories, but do not treat tags as transfer protection.
- Remove the star only after deciding that transfer is intentional.
- Read the transfer confirmation carefully because transferred Pokémon cannot be recovered.
Bottom line
The Favorite star is a transfer safeguard. It marks a Pokémon, makes it searchable with favorite, and prevents transfer until you deliberately remove the star. It does not raise CP, improve battle performance, or provide another documented gameplay bonus. Use Favorite for protection and tags for organization, then verify every transfer because the action cannot be reversed.
