Accidentally removed World of Warcraft gear is sometimes recoverable, but the correct method depends on what happened and when. A sale made during the current session should be handled through a vendor’s Buyback tab; eligible older sales, deleted items, and disenchanted items can be requested through Blizzard’s Item Restoration service.
Restoration is not guaranteed. Blizzard limits how many items each character can recover, excludes several item categories, reclaims enchanting materials when it restores a disenchanted item, and permanently loses items after their records are purged.
Choose the recovery route first
The three actions have different recovery paths. Use the route that matches the removal event rather than submitting repeated requests or immediately contacting support.

These distinctions come from Blizzard’s current World of Warcraft Item Restoration rules. They can change, so check the linked support page if your game version or account situation is unusual.

Recover a recent vendor sale with Buyback
Why Buyback is the fastest option
When you sell an item, the vendor keeps a temporary list of recent sales for that login session. Blizzard says the Buyback tab contains the last 12 items sold since login. That makes Buyback the appropriate first stop for an accidental sale made moments ago, especially before logging out.
Steps
- Return to any vendor that offers a Buyback interface.
- Open the vendor window and select the Buyback tab.
- Find the gear in the list and purchase it back.
- Check your bags and equipment after the transaction.
Buyback is session-based. If the item is no longer listed, do not assume the web restoration page will show it immediately; the item may have moved beyond the vendor’s temporary list, may be excluded, or may have been purged from Blizzard’s records.
Use Item Restoration for eligible older removals
What the service does
Blizzard’s World of Warcraft Item Restoration service presents recoverable items associated with a character. You select the character, review the available records, and choose an item. Blizzard sends a successful restoration to that character’s in-game mailbox rather than placing it directly in your bags or equipment slots.

Step-by-step
- Open the official Item Restoration page and sign in to the correct Battle.net account.
- Choose the World of Warcraft character that owned the item.
- Review the list of items currently eligible for restoration.
- Select the gear and submit the restoration request.
- Log in to that character and open the in-game mailbox.
- Verify the restored item before deleting, disenchanting, trading, or equipping it.
The list is the service’s eligibility decision. An item that does not appear is not something Customer Support can manually add on request. Blizzard states that permanently purged items cannot be restored by any means.

What changes when the item was disenchanted?
Disenchanting converts an item into crafting materials. Blizzard’s restoration process does not create a free replacement: if an eligible disenchanted item can be restored, the character must still have the materials received from that disenchant. Blizzard removes those materials when it returns the original item.
Before submitting a disenchant restoration
- Check the same character’s bags, bank, reagent storage, and other locations where the materials might be held.
- Do not mail, trade, sell, or consume the materials while deciding.
- Make sure the quantity is still available; spending even part of the materials can prevent restoration.
- Submit the request from the character associated with the item.
If the materials are missing, the item may not be restorable even if you remember disenchanting it. The restoration page, not a support ticket, determines whether the item and material exchange are available.
Current limits and account requirements
Restoration allowance
Blizzard’s current rules page says a character may restore up to five items once every 24 hours. The allowance is applied per character, not as a single unlimited pool that can be reused immediately across the account. A failed search for an item does not make an ineligible record appear, and the limit does not override the exclusion rules.

When the service is unavailable
The service requires an account with game time or an active subscription. Blizzard also says Item Restoration is unavailable when the account is suspended or banned. Resolve that account status first; creating repeated requests will not bypass the restriction.

Deleted characters
If the character that owned the gear was deleted, Blizzard instructs players to undelete that character before attempting item recovery. Once the character is available again, use Buyback or Item Restoration according to how the gear was removed. Character restoration and item restoration are separate actions, and restoring one does not automatically restore the other.
Items Blizzard excludes from Item Restoration
The service does not cover every object that can disappear from a character. Blizzard lists these important exclusions:
- Items destroyed during the current play session, for which Blizzard directs players to use the appropriate immediate recovery path rather than the restoration list.
- Stackable crafting materials and quest items.
- Consumables, including reagents, potions, and food.
- Collectibles that have already been added to Collections, such as pets, mounts, and heirlooms.
- Temporary items, including holiday-event items.
- Items traded or mailed to another character.
- Items sold on the Auction House.
- Items destroyed before a Character Transfer or Faction Change.
These exclusions are summarized in Blizzard’s Item Restoration rules. A gear item that looks ordinary in your bags can still be excluded because of how it was obtained, transferred, stored in a collection, or removed.

The record has expired or was purged
Blizzard retains restoration records for different periods depending on item quality and item level. Its examples say a Common (white) item may be recoverable for only one day, while an Epic item may be recoverable for 30 days. These are examples, not guaranteed deadlines for every item. Once Blizzard purges the record, the company says Customer Support cannot recover it.

The item falls under an exclusion
Check the exclusions before assuming the page failed. Consumables, stackable materials, collection entries, temporary items, Auction House transactions, transfers, faction changes, and qualifying current-session removals can all prevent listing.
The wrong character or account is selected
Item Restoration is character-specific. Confirm that you signed in to the Battle.net account and region containing the character, then select the exact character that owned the gear. Selecting another character does not expose the first character’s records.
The removal happened through another transaction
An item mailed or traded away, sold through the Auction House, or altered by a transfer may no longer qualify. Restoration is intended for eligible deletion, destruction, sale, or disenchant records, not for reversing every later transaction.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Stop changing the character. Do not spend disenchanting materials, delete more items, or move potentially relevant gear between characters.
- Check Buyback. For a recent vendor sale, visit a vendor before logging out and inspect the last 12 sales.
- Verify the character. Select the character that actually owned the item. If that character was deleted, undelete it first.
- Open Item Restoration. Review the official list rather than relying on memory of the item’s name or appearance.
- Check disenchanting materials. If the item was disenchanted, keep the exact materials available for Blizzard to reclaim.
- Compare the item with the exclusions. Check whether it was a consumable, stackable material, quest item, collection entry, temporary item, Auction House sale, trade, mail transfer, or transfer-related deletion.
- Consider retention. A lower-quality or older item may already have passed its retention window.
- Use the mailbox after approval. A successful request is delivered in game; check the character’s mailbox before concluding that it failed.
Current rules versus the old 2012 limit
Older guides often repeat a 30-day service cooldown from Blizzard Entertainment’s May 1, 2012 announcement about self-service restoration. That announcement describes the system at that time, not the current allowance. Blizzard’s present support rules specify up to five items every 24 hours per character, subject to account eligibility and item exclusions. Use the current support rules when deciding whether to wait, because limits and retention policies can be revised.
How quest rewards fit into the same problem
Quest rewards follow a related but distinct restoration process. Blizzard’s Quest Reward Restoration guidance also warns that listings are not permanent and that Customer Support cannot recover purged records. If the missing object was never ordinary gear in your bags but a quest reward that was discarded or replaced, consult that article rather than assuming the standard item list will contain it.

The cited support pages describe Blizzard’s World of Warcraft restoration service, but they do not establish that every game version, region, or specialized ruleset handles each item identically. If you play a version with separate characters, economies, or support policies, verify the account and region shown on the restoration page before acting.
Timing matters in two ways: Buyback is tied to the current login session, while Item Restoration depends on Blizzard retaining an eligible historical record. The safest response to an accidental removal is therefore immediate: check Buyback, preserve disenchanting materials, and submit the restoration request before the record can expire.
