Deleting an AI conversation usually removes it from the history screen immediately, but it does not guarantee instant erasure from every system. Providers commonly place the conversation in a scheduled deletion process, while saved memories, uploaded files, feedback records, human-reviewed copies, security logs, and legally retained data may follow separate rules. Deleting history, disabling model training, and clearing personalization are different actions.
What “delete” means in an AI chat service
There are several distinct events that people understandably call deletion:
- Interface removal: the conversation disappears from your history list and is no longer available through the normal chat screen.
- Backend deletion: the provider removes the conversation from production systems according to its stated schedule.
- Removal of related data: memories, files, connected-app records, feedback, moderation records, or account metadata are handled according to their own policies.
- Model-use controls: a setting can stop future chats from being used for improvement or personalization without deleting existing chats.
These stages are not interchangeable. A chat disappearing from a sidebar proves only that it is no longer visible there. It does not prove that every copy has been erased, that a saved memory has been removed, or that information has been “unlearned” from a model that may already have been trained.
What happens when you delete a ChatGPT conversation?
The visible chat is removed first
OpenAI’s ChatGPT retention documentation says a manually deleted chat is removed from the account view immediately and scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days. The same schedule applies when an account is deleted, according to that documentation. The 30-day period is a policy timeline, not an independent audit of deletion performance.

OpenAI lists exceptions. A conversation may already have been de-identified and disassociated from the account, or it may need to be retained longer for security or legal obligations. A deleted chat cannot be restored through ChatGPT or Support, so save anything you need before deleting it.
Saved memory is a separate record
Chat history and saved memory are different control surfaces. If ChatGPT created a saved memory from a conversation, deleting that conversation alone does not necessarily remove the memory. To clear the information from the documented locations, inspect the saved-memory controls and delete the original chat separately.
Information can also exist in other places. A memory might have been created from several conversations, and a file or connected service may contain the same facts. OpenAI says that turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion from its systems within 30 days; the original conversations remain in history unless you delete them separately. OpenAI also says a log of deleted saved memories may be kept for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.

The ChatGPT setting labeled Improve the model for everyone controls future model-improvement use. OpenAI explicitly says switching it off does not delete or hide saved chats. Existing conversations therefore remain subject to the ordinary history and deletion controls until you remove them.

Temporary Chat changes several behaviors at once: the conversation does not appear in history, does not create or update memories, and is not used to improve models. OpenAI says Temporary Chats may nevertheless be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Availability and exact controls can depend on your plan, region, or workspace configuration.
Files can survive the chat
Files saved in ChatGPT’s Library are managed separately from conversations. Deleting the chat that contained an upload does not delete a Library file, so review the Library and remove the file independently. The same principle applies to files in projects, custom assistants, connected applications, or other account areas: a conversation record is not necessarily the storage location for its attachments.
What happens when you delete Gemini activity?
Auto-delete settings define a different default
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub describes an automatic deletion period of 18 months by default for Gemini Apps activity. Users can change that setting to 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention, and they can manually delete chats. These choices describe the documented Gemini Apps account context; a work or school account can follow administrator-controlled settings instead.

Human-reviewed chats have a major exception
Google states that chats reviewed by human reviewers, along with related data such as language, device type, location information, or feedback, are not deleted when you delete your activity. Instead, the reviewed data is disconnected from your account and retained for up to three years. This means deleting a Gemini activity entry does not necessarily remove every reviewed copy or its associated metadata.

Turning Keep Activity off still allows short-term retention
When Keep Activity is off, future chats do not appear in Gemini Activity and are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. Google nevertheless says those chats are retained with the account for 72 hours so the service can respond, process feedback, and protect the service and users. If a service provider has already reviewed a chat, deleting activity does not delete that reviewed copy.
The 72-hour rule is therefore not the same as “nothing is stored.” It is a limited service-retention period for new chats under the Keep Activity-off setting, with separate handling for feedback and previously reviewed data.
What happens when you delete a Claude conversation?
Anthropic’s Privacy Center says consumer Claude conversations are removed from conversation history immediately after deletion and automatically deleted from Anthropic’s backend within 30 days. That statement concerns the conversation-deletion process.
Claude’s model-improvement documentation describes separate controls and exceptions, including safety-flagged conversations. Incognito chats are described as not being used to improve Claude. Do not treat the model-improvement setting as a different deletion promise: the 30-day statement supports the deletion schedule for consumer conversations, while training-use rules address whether future content is used to improve the service.

Provider policies compared
The following table compares consumer-product policies documented by the providers. It does not rank the services or measure whether internal deletion operations actually complete faster than the stated policy.

Does deleting a chat remove it from the AI model?
Deletion policies describe account records and provider systems; they do not promise retroactive removal from a model that was already trained. If content was included in a prior training or improvement process, deleting the source conversation later does not automatically reverse that process. The documented controls also distinguish “not used for training,” “not used for personalization,” “removed from history,” and “deleted from backend systems.” Treat each phrase literally.
Feedback deserves special caution. Submitting a rating, correction, or other feedback can create a related record. Google specifically includes feedback among data associated with human-reviewed chats that can be retained after activity deletion. For any provider, check how feedback is handled before assuming that deleting the conversation removes the feedback record.
How to remove an AI chat and related copies
- Identify the account and product. Confirm whether you are using a personal, work, school, enterprise, or managed account. Retention controls can differ, and an administrator may set the policy for a managed account.
- Delete the conversation, not merely archive it. Use the product’s delete command or delete-all control. Archiving generally hides a conversation while leaving it stored wherever the service supports archived content.
- Clear saved memories and personalization. In ChatGPT, open the memory controls and remove saved items separately from the source chats. If a fact came from several conversations, check for more than one memory.
- Inspect files and projects. Review Library files, project uploads, custom-assistant files, and other attachment stores. Delete each item from its own management screen.
- Check connected applications. If the chat referenced data imported from another service, remove the copy there or revoke the connection according to that service’s controls.
- Change future-use settings. Turn off model-improvement or activity-saving controls if you do not want future chats used in those ways. Understand that these switches generally do not retroactively delete existing conversations.
- Use temporary or incognito modes for new sensitive chats. Review the provider’s safety-retention period first: Temporary Chat can be retained by OpenAI for up to 30 days, and Gemini keeps Keep Activity-off chats for 72 hours.
- Review feedback and policy exceptions. Avoid assuming that a rating or correction disappears with the chat. Consider legal, security, moderation, and human-review exceptions described by the provider.
- Allow the stated period to pass. A disappearing history entry is immediate interface removal; backend deletion follows the provider’s published schedule and exceptions.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Deleting the chat but leaving a memory
This is the most important ChatGPT-specific trap. If the assistant saved a preference, name, project detail, or other fact, remove the saved memory as well as the conversation. Turning off chat-history reference addresses future use of remembered information but does not itself delete the original chat.

Confusing privacy settings with deletion
A training or activity switch usually affects future collection or use. It is not a “delete everything already stored” button. Delete existing chats separately, then review files, memories, feedback, and connected services.
Assuming a short-term mode means zero retention
Temporary and incognito modes reduce history, memory, or model-improvement behavior, but providers can retain content for safety or service operations. OpenAI documents up to 30 days for Temporary Chats, while Google documents 72 hours for Gemini chats with Keep Activity off.
Ignoring managed-account rules
For Gemini work and school accounts, an administrator may control retention settings or prevent users from viewing or changing the personal-account options. The same general caution applies to other managed AI workspaces: check the organization’s policy before treating a user-level deletion as final.

“Within 30 days,” “72 hours,” and “up to three years” are published retention commitments for defined situations. They are not independent measurements of deletion efficacy, and they do not erase copies covered by a named exception. Keep the provider, product, account type, region, and date attached to every retention claim.
What to remember before deleting
- Delete the visible conversation and separately clear memory or personalization records.
- Search for files, projects, connected-app data, and feedback that may live outside the chat.
- Read the exact provider policy for legal, security, moderation, de-identification, and human-review exceptions.
- Turn off future model-improvement or activity settings when appropriate, but do not expect those settings to erase past chats.
- Use temporary or incognito modes for future sensitive conversations while allowing for their documented safety-retention windows.
- On work or school accounts, ask the administrator which retention policy applies.
Across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, the reliable interpretation is the same: deletion normally starts with immediate removal from the user interface, followed by a provider-specific backend schedule. The surrounding data ecosystem—memory, files, feedback, reviewed records, and account controls—must be checked separately, and none of these policies promises to untrain a model retroactively.
