When galaxy clusters collide, their galaxies usually pass through one another, while the diffuse gas between them crashes, slows and heats to millions of degrees. Dark-matter halos also mostly pass through, so the hot gas can end up visibly displaced from the galaxies and from the mass mapped by gravitational lensing. The result is a natural laboratory for collisionless shock waves, plasma physics and tests of dark matter.

A cluster merger is a collision of three different components

A galaxy cluster is not a solid ball of stars. It is a gravitationally bound system containing hundreds or thousands of galaxies, an enormous reservoir of thin intracluster plasma and an even larger dark-matter halo. During a merger, these components respond differently because they interact through different forces.

Galaxies and stars

Galaxies are widely separated compared with their sizes. Even though the clusters themselves cross one another, the stars occupy such a small fraction of the total volume that direct star-on-star impacts are extraordinarily unlikely. Galaxies can be deflected by the combined gravity, and their orbits can change, but a merger is not a scene of most stars smashing together.

Intracluster gas

The space between galaxies contains a very thin, million-degree plasma. Unlike stars, this gas fills a large volume. Gas from one cluster runs into gas from the other, experiences ram pressure, is compressed and slowed, and can be left behind the galaxies. Compression and shock heating make the plasma bright in X-rays.

Dark matter

Dark matter does not emit or absorb light, so astronomers do not photograph it directly. Its distribution is inferred from gravitational lensing: the way its gravity bends light from more distant galaxies. In a merger, the dark-matter halos and the galaxies generally continue forward rather than behaving like colliding clouds of gas. This can separate the lensing mass from the X-ray-bright plasma.

What happens during the encounter

  1. Gravity brings the clusters together. Each cluster’s total mass accelerates the other, often producing relative speeds of millions of miles per hour in the most energetic encounters.
  2. The gas meets first. The two diffuse plasmas interpenetrate and exert drag on each other. Ram pressure strips gas from the moving galaxies and dark-matter halos.
  3. Supersonic motion drives shocks. Gas moving faster than sound in the surrounding intracluster medium pushes a bow-shaped front through it. Density and pressure jump across that front, and the gas temperature rises.
  4. Galaxies and dark matter continue through. Their trajectories are governed mainly by gravity, so they can emerge ahead of the retarded gas. The resulting offset is detectable by comparing galaxy positions, X-rays and lensing.
  5. The system relaxes slowly. Turbulence, heat exchange and gravity continue reshaping the merged cluster after the first core passage. Not every merger produces a clean, easily measured separation.

A merger unfolds in recognizable stages

Before the cores meet, the clusters may already be connected by a bridge of disturbed plasma. This early stage is especially useful for finding gas that has been heated without being hidden by the brightest central regions. Abell 98, about 1.4 billion light-years away, is an example: Chandra measured bridge gas near 20 million kelvins alongside cooler gas near 10 million kelvins. The contrast identifies a developing interaction rather than a fully relaxed cluster.

At or shortly after core passage, ram pressure is strongest. Gas clouds collide, bow shocks become prominent and tails or bridges can trail behind the galaxies. The Bullet Cluster is a well-known post-collision view, while MACS J0025.4-1222 supplies an independent case in which the X-ray gas is offset from the lensing mass. The amount of separation depends on the impact geometry, the relative masses and the angle from which Earth views the event.

Later, the subclusters’ identity becomes less obvious. Shock-heated gas expands, turbulence decays and gravity pulls material toward a common center. Electrons can be heated quickly at a shock, whereas complete energy sharing among different particle populations takes longer. Thus a measured temperature is a snapshot of a nonequilibrium plasma, not necessarily the final temperature of the merged system.

Why the shocks are called collisionless

In an ordinary fluid, a shock forms when frequent particle collisions convert bulk motion into heat. Intracluster plasma is so sparse that ordinary Coulomb collisions are too infrequent to provide that immediate transition. NASA reports that particles in the Abell 2146 environment may travel 30,000 to 50,000 light-years before colliding.

These are therefore collisionless shocks. Charged particles and magnetic fields mediate the abrupt change in density, pressure and flow. Electrons are rapidly compressed and heated, while some further equilibration between particle populations takes place more slowly. The shock can extend for an immense distance: NASA measured an approximately 1.6-million-light-year shock front in Abell 2146.

How a bow shock develops

As one subcluster’s gas moves supersonically through gas belonging to the other, pressure cannot propagate upstream quickly enough to clear a path. A curved compression front forms ahead of the moving subcluster, analogous in shape—not in material—to a bow wave. Behind it, the plasma is denser, hotter and more turbulent. Multiple fronts can appear when both sides drive shocks or when gas is redirected around the cores.

What the shock tells astronomers

The location and brightness of an X-ray edge reveal where the gas density changes. Temperature measurements on either side show how much kinetic energy was converted into thermal energy. In Abell 2146, observations also measured random gas motions of about 650,000 miles per hour, evidence that the merger’s energy remains in bulk turbulence as well as heat.

Why the gas glows in X-rays

Intracluster plasma reaches temperatures of roughly ten to tens of millions of kelvins in the systems described here. At those temperatures, electrons and ions move rapidly and the plasma emits high-energy radiation, including X-rays. An X-ray telescope such as Chandra can map the gas’s surface brightness and measure its temperature, pressure and sharp shock boundaries.

The X-ray image is not a map of all the cluster’s mass. It is a map of where the hot, ordinary matter is concentrated. A bright bridge or tail can therefore mark gas that has been compressed or stripped, even when most of the gravitational mass lies elsewhere.

The Bullet Cluster: the clearest gas–mass separation

The Bullet Cluster, designated 1E 0657-556, is the standard visual example. In composite images, pink X-rays trace the hot gas and blue shading represents the mass distribution inferred from gravitational lensing. The gas has been slowed by ram pressure and left near the collision region, while the galaxies and the dominant lensing mass remain more closely aligned with the incoming subclusters.

This spatial separation is difficult to explain if nearly all of the gravitating matter were the same collisional material that shines in X-rays. It is strong observational evidence that most of the mass is a non-luminous component—dark matter—that interacts much more weakly than the plasma. Webb’s later mapping used thousands of galaxies to improve the lensing-based mass distribution and found no significant signal of dark matter self-interaction in that map.

NASA’s 2006 description called the Bullet Cluster collision “the most energetic event known in the universe since the Big Bang.” That is a historical NASA characterization, not a newly established universal ranking. The durable result is the measured offset between gas and lensing mass.

Other cluster mergers and what they reveal

System Merger stage and observations What it helps establish
Bullet Cluster (1E 0657-556) Post-collision system in which pink X-ray gas is separated from blue lensing mass; galaxies remain nearer the mass peaks. Direct comparison of ordinary gas with the dominant, lensing-inferred mass; evidence for dark matter with weak self-interaction.
MACS J0025.4-1222 Two clusters, each almost a quadrillion times the Sun’s mass, merged at speeds of millions of miles per hour. The X-ray-bright gas is separated from the lensing mass. An independent example that gas can be slowed while dark matter and galaxies pass through, strengthening the case that the Bullet Cluster is not unique.
Abell 98 Early-stage merger about 1.4 billion light-years away. Chandra found a bridge with gas near 20 million kelvins and cooler gas near 10 million kelvins; the associated warm-hot intergalactic matter was estimated at 400 billion solar masses. Shows that an emerging shock can expose and heat otherwise hard-to-detect warm-hot intergalactic matter (WHIM) before the cluster cores fully merge.
Abell 2146 Pair about 2.8 billion light-years away with two bright shock fronts. One measured front is approximately 1.6 million light-years long; random gas motions are about 650,000 miles per hour. Provides a large, clear view of collisionless shocks and the turbulent energy left in the plasma.

Where is the dark matter in the Bullet Cluster?

It is concentrated in two broad mass peaks that follow the galaxies on either side of the collision rather than the pink X-ray gas between them. Those peaks are not photographs of dark matter. They are reconstructed from the small, coherent distortions that the cluster’s gravity produces in the shapes of many background galaxies.

The inference becomes persuasive because three tracers can be compared in the same sky area:

  • Optical or near-infrared light: locates the member galaxies.
  • X-rays: locate and characterize the hot intracluster plasma.
  • Weak gravitational lensing: maps the total projected mass, dominated in these systems by dark matter.

When the lensing peaks and galaxies travel together while the X-ray gas lags, the offset limits how much non-gravitational drag or self-interaction dark matter can have. The result does not prove that every merger will show an equally neat pattern; geometry, viewing angle and merger stage matter.

How astronomers reconstruct a merger

1. Map the galaxies

Optical and near-infrared images identify cluster members, show subcluster concentrations and measure how the galaxies are distributed. Spectroscopy can separate members at the cluster’s distance from unrelated foreground or background objects, although the specific measurements depend on the observing program.

2. Image the plasma in X-rays

Chandra and other X-ray observatories measure surface brightness, temperature and density structure. A sharp edge, elongated tail or bright bridge can reveal stripped gas and a shock. Comparing temperatures on both sides of an edge distinguishes a cold front from a shock-heated boundary.

3. Infer the mass with lensing

Weak lensing averages tiny shape distortions across many background galaxies to recover the projected mass map. Webb’s Bullet Cluster work measured thousands of galaxies, improving the precision of that reconstruction. The map includes every gravitating component, but dark matter dominates the mass budget in these mergers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Compare the offsets

Overlaying the galaxy, X-ray and lensing maps shows whether gas has been displaced from the mass. The size and direction of the offset, together with simulations of the collision geometry, constrain gas drag and possible dark-matter self-interaction.

How to compare different merger examples

No single cluster supplies every diagnostic. An early-stage system such as Abell 98 is valuable for seeing a bridge and the transition from roughly 10-million- to 20-million-kelvin gas, as well as for tracing an estimated 400-billion-solar-mass WHIM component. A post-core-passage system such as the Bullet Cluster gives the cleanest visual separation between gas and lensing mass. MACS J0025.4-1222 is important because it repeats that separation in an independent collision, with each progenitor approaching a quadrillion solar masses.

Abell 2146 is the stronger shock laboratory: it lies about 2.8 billion light-years away, displays two bright fronts and includes a front roughly 1.6 million light-years long. Its approximately 650,000-mile-per-hour random gas motions quantify turbulence rather than merely showing a bright edge. Comparisons should therefore record merger stage, distance, shock-front clarity and length, gas temperature, lensing-map quality and whether the main result concerns WHIM or dark-matter physics.

What cluster collisions do not mean

  • They are not galaxy-wide star collisions. Most stars in the member galaxies never physically touch another star.
  • They are not explosions that destroy both clusters instantly. Gravity leaves a larger, disturbed system that can settle over a long period.
  • The dark matter is not visible in an image. Colored contours or blue regions in a composite are visualizations of a lensing inference.
  • Every merger is not a perfect Bullet Cluster. A merger can be viewed from an awkward angle, observed before or after core passage, or have gas and mass that are less cleanly separated.
  • There is no single merger temperature or speed. The values vary with cluster mass, impact geometry and evolutionary stage, so measurements must be attached to their specific systems.

Why these events matter beyond spectacular images

Testing dark-matter physics

In a collision, gravity moves all components, while gas also feels pressure and drag. Measuring how far the lensing mass leads the gas tests whether dark matter has appreciable non-gravitational interactions. The Bullet Cluster and MACS J0025 provide especially clear cases; Webb’s Bullet Cluster map reports no significant self-interaction signal.

Finding the missing ordinary matter

A large fraction of normal matter is expected to occupy diffuse, warm-hot structures between galaxies. These structures are difficult to detect because they are faint. Abell 98’s approximately 20-million-kelvin bridge, cooler approximately 10-million-kelvin gas and estimated 400-billion-solar-mass WHIM component show how merger shocks can make that material measurable.

Understanding plasma processes

Collisionless shocks let astronomers study how magnetic fields and charged particles convert enormous bulk flows into heat and turbulence in a regime that cannot be reproduced in a laboratory. The measured front lengths and particle mean paths emphasize how different this plasma is from an ordinary terrestrial fluid.

Reading a cluster-merger image correctly

  1. Check the legend before interpreting colors: X-ray emission and lensing mass are different measurements.
  2. Locate the galaxies or near-infrared light to identify the subcluster centers.
  3. Find bright X-ray bridges, tails or edges; these mark gas, not the total mass.
  4. Compare the lensing contours with the galaxies. Coincident peaks indicate where most mass is inferred to be.
  5. Ask what merger stage and viewing angle the authors model. A projected offset on the sky is not automatically the full three-dimensional separation.

Frequently asked questions

Do the galaxies crash into one another?

Almost never directly. The stars occupy a tiny fraction of each galaxy’s volume, so the galaxies and their stars generally pass through while gravity changes their paths. Gas clouds, which fill the space between galaxies, are the component that physically collides.

Why does the gas lag behind?

Ram pressure acts on the diffuse plasma as it moves through opposing plasma. The gas is compressed, slowed and heated, whereas galaxies and dark-matter halos are governed mainly by gravity and continue forward. The Bullet Cluster’s offset is a particularly clear example.

How do shock waves form in space?

A subcluster’s gas can move supersonically through the surrounding intracluster medium. Because pressure information cannot travel upstream fast enough, a bow-shaped compression front forms. In the thin plasma, magnetic fields and charged particles mediate this collisionless shock rather than frequent ordinary particle impacts.

Is the blue material in a Bullet Cluster picture dark matter photographed directly?

No. Blue contours or shading show a mass distribution reconstructed from weak gravitational lensing. The method measures how the cluster’s gravity distorts many background galaxies; dark matter is inferred because it dominates the mass associated with the lensing peaks.

Does every merger prove the same thing?

No. The clearest gas–mass separations occur in systems such as the Bullet Cluster and MACS J0025. Viewing angle, merger stage and the quality of the lensing and X-ray data can make another collision less clean. Measurements must be interpreted for the specific system.

What is the most useful distance or temperature to remember?

There is no universal value. Abell 98 is about 1.4 billion light-years away, with bridge gas near 20 million kelvins and cooler gas near 10 million kelvins. Abell 2146 is about 2.8 billion light-years away and has a shock front roughly 1.6 million light-years long. These are system-specific measurements, not standards for all mergers.

The practical answer in one sentence

When clusters collide, galaxies and dark matter mostly pass through under gravity, but their diffuse plasma crashes into opposing plasma, driving enormous collisionless shocks that heat and displace the gas; X-ray and lensing observations make those different responses visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the galaxies crash into one another?

Almost never directly: stars occupy very little volume, so galaxies generally pass through while gravity changes their paths. The diffuse intracluster gas is what physically collides.

Why is the gas bright in X-rays?

Shock compression and heating raise the thin plasma to roughly ten to tens of millions of kelvins, where it emits X-rays that Chandra can map.

Where is the dark matter in the Bullet Cluster?

It is inferred in two broad lensing mass peaks that follow the galaxies rather than the pink X-ray gas. The peaks come from gravitational lensing, not a direct photograph.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do astronomers know a shock is collisionless?

Particles in Abell 2146 may travel 30,000–50,000 light-years before colliding, so magnetic fields and charged particles must mediate the shock instead of frequent ordinary impacts.

Does every cluster merger separate gas and dark matter cleanly?

No. The Bullet Cluster and MACS J0025.4-1222 are especially clear; viewing angle, merger stage and data quality affect the observed offset.

What does Abell 98 add to the story?

Its early-stage bridge contains gas near 20 million kelvins and cooler gas near 10 million kelvins, revealing shock-heated material and an estimated 400-billion-solar-mass warm-hot intergalactic component.

The Bottom Line

Cluster mergers are collisions of components, not a wall of stars: diffuse gas slams together and forms million-degree, collisionless shocks, while galaxies and dark-matter halos largely continue through. X-ray maps reveal the heated plasma, and gravitational lensing reveals the mass dominated by dark matter, allowing systems such as the Bullet Cluster, MACS J0025, Abell 98 and Abell 2146 to test plasma physics, missing ordinary matter and dark-matter interactions.
