Crypto can keep trading while U.S. stock exchanges are outside their regular session, but that does not mean every stock is untradeable—or that crypto’s overnight price predicts a stock’s next move. Crypto venues and stock venues follow different schedules, and any overnight stock quote may be less reliable than a regular-session price.
When are U.S. stocks closed, and does crypto keep trading?
The New York Stock Exchange’s regular core session runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The SEC gives the same regular-hours range for stocks traded on exchanges and certain other markets. Outside that window, trading may still be available through extended sessions, depending on the venue, brokerage, security and day. NYSE market hours · SEC guidance on after-hours trading
Crypto can trade 24/7 on platforms that support it. Coinbase, for example, describes crypto availability as 24/7; that is a platform statement, not a guarantee that every asset or venue is available at every moment. Asset availability, maintenance and jurisdiction can matter. Coinbase market-hours information
“Closed” does not always mean no stock trading
Brokerages and trading venues may support pre-market, after-hours or overnight stock sessions. Their schedules and eligible securities differ. Coinbase describes selected stock trading in a 24/5 schedule, with weekends and U.S. market holidays closed; it is an example of one platform’s offering, not a universal schedule. Check your brokerage for the specific stock, session and order types it supports.

What happens to prices while the regular stock session is closed?
A crypto venue can continue matching orders and updating its own prices. A stock may also trade in an extended session if a venue and brokerage support it. But there is no single, continuous, authoritative stock price guaranteed to update across all venues while the regular session is closed.
The SEC warns that extended-hours trading generally has less trading interest and price competition than regular trading. As a result, an off-hours quote may be a weaker signal of the price at which a larger or easier-to-execute trade could occur.

- Lower liquidity: Fewer participants can make it harder to trade, and some stocks may not trade at all.
- Wider spreads and uncertain execution: The gap between the bid and ask may widen, increasing costs. Many brokerages accept only limit orders in extended sessions; a limit order can remain unfilled if the market moves away.
- Fragmented quotes: Extended-hours systems are not linked together, so a quote on one venue may not match a quote elsewhere.
- Greater price swings and gaps: An extended-hours price can differ from the regular-session close and from the next day’s opening price.
- Different safeguards: Some volatility mechanisms may be limited or unavailable. Companies may also release significant news outside regular hours.
Before placing an off-hours order, check your broker’s rules for routing, eligible securities, order types, order duration and applicable protections.
Does an overnight crypto move predict a stock’s opening price?
Not by itself. Continuous crypto trading means participants can react to information in crypto markets while U.S. stock venues are closed. It does not establish that a particular stock will move in the same direction, or that a crypto price change will persist when stock trading resumes.

The official sources cited here describe market schedules and extended-hours risks; they do not provide a measured or guaranteed relationship between overnight crypto moves and the next opening price of a given stock. Any claim of predictive power needs evidence for the specific asset, time period and method being discussed.
Also distinguish the instruments: a crypto asset, an exchange-traded share, a fund and a derivative can have different venues, hours and rules. A price for one is not automatically a price for another.

Are U.S. stocks moving to 24-hour trading?
Plans to expand stock-market hours are venue-specific and subject to implementation conditions. They should not be read as proof that every U.S. stock trades around the clock.

A separate 23/5 schedule described in a Federal Register notice
A Federal Register notice published October 8, 2026, describes another exchange’s intended 23/5 schedule, with an overnight session from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. and a planned December 2026 start, pending industry readiness. The notice also addresses resumption after a Level 3 market-wide circuit breaker: trading would resume at 4:00 a.m. the following trading day rather than reopening at 9:00 p.m. Expanded hours therefore would not guarantee uninterrupted access through a market-wide halt. Federal Register notice
How to assess an overnight quote
When comparing crypto access with stock trading outside regular hours, check the practical details—not just the headline schedule:
- Hours and days: Does the session include weekends or holidays? Are maintenance windows possible?
- What can trade: Is the specific coin or stock eligible in that session?
- Where orders go: Which venue or routing arrangement handles the trade, and are quotes linked across venues?
- Trading conditions: How active is the market, and how wide is the bid/ask spread?
- Order rules: Which order types are accepted, and when do unfilled orders expire?
- Safeguards: Which price limits, volatility mechanisms or halts apply?
The SEC’s Commissioner Mark T. Uyeda, speaking at the SEC Roundtable on 24-Hour Trading on September 17, 2026, cautioned that in some cases “liquidity might spread too thin, reducing price discovery and execution quality.” The comment concerns potential effects of expanded overnight trading, not a claim that every overnight session will have poor liquidity.
