If Claude API requests stop working, “out of credits” is only one possible explanation. Check the HTTP status and error type first: Anthropic documents 402 billing_error for billing or payment problems, 400 for most configured organization or workspace spend limits, and 429 rate_limit_error for rate limits, a usage-tier monthly spend cap, or certain Claude Code workspace limits. Each points to a different next step.
What the error response tells you
Capture the HTTP status, error type, message, and request ID from the failed API call. A message shown by your application may simplify or mislabel the underlying error, so use the response from Anthropic when diagnosing the problem.

Anthropic’s API error reference documents these distinctions. A 429 alone does not prove that you have exhausted a balance.
How to diagnose a 429
First determine whether the failure is caused by sending requests too quickly or by a spending limit. Anthropic says a 429 caused by the usage-tier monthly spend cap has no retry-after header and continues until access resumes. A retry loop with a short delay will not necessarily resolve that account-level block.

- If the response indicates ordinary request-rate limiting, adjust request pacing and use the rate-limit information in the response to guide retries.
- If it indicates a usage-tier spend cap, check the account’s usage and access settings in Claude Console rather than treating the error as temporary throttling.
- If the request is associated with Claude Code, check the applicable workspace limit; Anthropic notes that this case may return 429.
What to check in Claude Console
For a billing error
Review the payment details and billing configuration for the account. The official error documentation identifies billing or payment problems with 402 billing_error. After correcting an issue, send a controlled test request and check its response, rather than assuming access has returned immediately.
For a configured spend limit
Identify the organization and workspace associated with the API key, then inspect the applicable spending limit. A key can be used in a context different from the one you first check, so match the error to the right organization or workspace before changing a cap.

To understand what generated usage
Use Console usage data to review activity and identify the organization, key, or workload responsible for spend. Anthropic’s pricing documentation describes Console usage tracking. Its live documentation should be consulted for current account and billing details.
Will adding billing or changing a limit restore access?
It depends on the cause of the failure. Correcting payment details addresses a billing problem; changing the applicable spend setting addresses a configured cap. The reviewed documentation does not promise one restoration time for all accounts or account changes. If a controlled test still fails, contact Anthropic support with the request ID and the full error response.

The pricing page describes monthly billing based on actual usage, payment in USD, and usage tiers that affect rate limits. However, its indexed copy is over a year old. It does not establish current rules for every account on prepaid credits, whether credits expire, the exact current recharge flow, or how quickly access resumes after a payment or limit change. Verify those specifics in the live Console or with Anthropic support instead of assuming a universal credit or restoration policy.

A billing or spend-limit error is not fixed simply by switching models. Consider model availability only if the error names an unavailable model. Anthropic’s model deprecations documentation says requests to retired models fail and recommends migrating to an active replacement; consult its live page for current model status. The documentation also describes usage exports by API key and model, which can help with usage audits.
