When an underwater robot loses its tether, the outcome depends on what failed. A loss of control or telemetry does not necessarily mean the tether has physically separated. If it has separated, the ROV may sink, drift, or surface depending on its buoyancy and conditions; there is no single outcome or guaranteed recovery. Treat a suspected separation as an incident: alert the responsible supervisor and vessel team, establish the last known position, and follow the emergency plan for that specific vehicle and operation.

First determine what “losing the tether” means

A tether carries more than one function on many ROVs: it can provide the control and communication path, and some systems also use it for power. A vehicle that stops responding may have lost a signal or power without the tether physically parting. Conversely, visible or confirmed separation removes the tether connection and may leave the vehicle without its normal control and communication path.

That distinction matters because the response differs. A control or telemetry failure may leave other signals or system fail-safe behavior available in some work-class configurations. The ADCI consensus document describes an example in which fail-safe behavior maintains depth and can assist with TMS latching. This is not a feature to assume on every ROV; consult the system’s documentation and emergency plan.

In practical terms, “the vehicle is not responding” is an observation, not a diagnosis. The crew should avoid treating that symptom as proof that the tether is cut—or assuming that a tether is intact simply because the failure first appeared to be a control problem. Use whatever status information and procedures are available for the particular system to distinguish a telemetry or power problem from physical separation. A fail-safe response described for one work-class configuration does not establish what a smaller inspection ROV or another work-class vehicle will do.

With physical separation, what happens next depends on the vehicle’s buoyancy and the circumstances. It may sink, drift with the current, or surface. The available guidance does not establish a universal prediction for all vehicles, nor does separation mean the ROV can necessarily be recovered. The last known position is useful for organizing a search, but it is not a guarantee that the vehicle remains there: conditions and the vehicle’s behavior affect what can be located.

What the crew should prioritize when separation is suspected

  1. Raise the alarm. Notify the responsible supervisor and, for a vessel operation, the captain and relevant vessel team. Use the operation’s emergency plan rather than improvising a recovery. Make clear that separation is suspected or confirmed, rather than reporting a loss of control as a confirmed cut tether.
  2. Establish the last known position. Record the vehicle’s location and time of the last reliable contact. Coordinate with survey personnel and use available transponder, beacon, survey, or other tracking information as the plan directs. Preserve the information that helps the team coordinate its search.
  3. Keep the search coordinated. Assign responsibilities and maintain awareness of vessel position, current, and other hazards. Do not assume a beacon is transmitting or being interrogated successfully just because the system has one. Follow the operation’s plan for tracking and communication.
  4. Use a recovery method appropriate to the system. Vehicle design, tether and TMS arrangement, buoyancy, location, current, vessel setup, and available lifting or tracking equipment all affect what is safe and feasible. Do not treat a recovery technique for one ROV class as a universal checklist.

For commercial work-class operations, ADCI edition 6.3 (2020) describes a context-specific response that can include raising the TMS, alerting the captain, posting lookouts, and coordinating with survey personnel using beacon data. If a beacon is not heard, the guidance discusses raising a hydrophone pole. If the vehicle is located, it describes a planned surface recovery using the vessel’s recovery zone and suitable lifting points. These details belong to that commercial-operation context: they are not instructions for a small inspection ROV, and should not be copied without the appropriate equipment, crew, and operating plan.

The order and responsibilities in a real incident should come from the applicable emergency plan. The important general point is to move from a suspected failure to a coordinated response: notify the people responsible, establish what is known about the vehicle’s last position and status, and use tracking and recovery resources in the way the operation has planned. A list of possible tools is not a substitute for knowing who will use them, how the team will coordinate, and what limits apply.

Small inspection ROVs: follow the exact model’s guidance

BlueROV2

Blue Robotics’ BlueROV2 operating guidance says to disarm before recovery. If power or the connection to QGroundControl is lost during a dive, it advises retrieving the tether at a moderate pace—not pulling as fast as possible. It also cautions operators to keep the tether away from propellers, boats, and sharp objects, and to avoid leaving excess tether in the water. These are BlueROV2-specific instructions; do not treat them as universal settings for other models.

The distinction between moderate retrieval and pulling as fast as possible is a reminder to follow the manufacturer’s procedure rather than reacting with maximum force. The same operating guidance emphasizes keeping the tether clear of hazards and limiting excess tether in the water. Together, these points address the chance of creating additional tether problems during an operation or recovery. They do not establish a retrieval speed or method for a different ROV, nor do they replace that system’s instructions for a confirmed physical separation.

VideoRay Pro 4

For a suspected cut tether on the Pro 4, the VideoRay Pro 4 Operator’s Manual, version 2.00.00, gives separate steps:

  1. Turn off power.
  2. Retrieve the ROV if possible.
  3. If the tether is completely separated, mark the spot to aid the search. The manual states: “If the tether is completely separated, mark the spot to facilitate a search for the ROV.”
  4. Remove the tether from the water promptly to help prevent water ingress.

These steps are specific to the Pro 4 manual’s cut-tether guidance. In particular, marking the spot applies when the tether is completely separated; it gives the search team a reference point, but does not ensure the ROV can be found. Likewise, removing the tether from the water promptly addresses water ingress risk to the tether. Operators should consult the manual for their exact model and situation rather than assuming these steps are appropriate for every system.

The same manual notes that tether may often be spliced. It identifies hot glue or silicone/RTV glue as possible field-repair materials, but says a more permanent repair should be made at the first opportunity. These materials are not universal repair recommendations: compatibility depends on the exact tether and system, and a temporary field repair is not equivalent to a permanent repair. Do not infer that an adhesive suitable for one tether will be suitable for another, or that a field repair restores the system to its intended condition indefinitely.

If a replacement tether is being considered, confirm the model and compatibility rather than buying on the assumption that tethers are interchangeable. Blueye’s service-manual listing confirms its manual covers tether replacement, but it does not establish universal compatibility or a particular price. The available information does not support a general repair-cost estimate or a universal parts recommendation.

Why recovery is not guaranteed

A separated ROV can be difficult or impossible to locate. The vehicle may drift, its expected depth or direction may be uncertain, and tracking equipment may not provide usable information. Recovery also depends on the operation’s ability to search and lift the vehicle safely. A manual’s recovery steps or a beacon’s presence are not promises that the ROV will be found. There is no suitable population statistic in the sources reviewed for tether-failure frequency or recovery success, so one incident should not be turned into a rate.

An IMCA incident during a platform-jacket inspection illustrates how damage can lead to separation: abrasion against the jacket structure parted the tether, the ROV drifted away, and communication was lost. IMCA’s direct-cause summary says: “The tether parted due to abrasion against the jacket structure, and the ROV was lost with no communication to it.” This is one incident, not evidence of how often tether failures occur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The report also identified planning and operational issues: emergency procedures did not adequately cover the actual scenario, the crew complement was insufficient for the operation’s complexity, and transponder interrogation exhausted the beacon battery prematurely. Procedures were subsequently revised to include environmental limits and more recovery detail, and current information was added to the pilot interface. The practical lesson is to plan for the specific failure scenario, staff the operation appropriately, maintain current awareness, and manage beacon power and interrogation rates.

The beacon detail matters because tracking equipment is useful only insofar as it can provide information when needed. The incident shows why a plan should address how tracking will be used and how battery life will be managed, rather than treating beacon availability as a guarantee. It also shows why emergency procedures should reflect the actual work and its complexity: staffing, environmental limits, current information, and recovery planning can all affect how a team responds.

Prepare before the ROV enters the water

  • Identify the difference between signal or power loss and physical tether separation in the system’s procedures.
  • Confirm who is responsible for the incident response, vessel communications, tracking, and recovery decisions.
  • Know the vehicle’s buoyancy behavior, fail-safe functions, and any TMS or recovery arrangement; verify them in the exact model documentation.
  • Set environmental limits and account for current, nearby structures, vessel movement, and tether abrasion or snag hazards.
  • Confirm that tracking equipment is available and usable, and manage beacon battery life according to the operating plan.
  • For commercial vessel work, plan the recovery zone, lookouts, survey coordination, and suitable lifting points before an incident.
  • Make sure the procedures describe the scenario the crew may actually face and that the staffing is appropriate to the operation’s complexity.

ADCI’s edition 6.3 (2020) document applies to commercial diving and work-class ROV operations, not consumer ROV instruction. IMCA’s catalog lists “Remotely operated vehicle intervention during diving operations” as Revision 1, October 2026, with a scope covering combined ROV and diving operations, including risk assessment, communications, responsibilities, and emergency preparedness; that scope alone should not be treated as a source for particular tether-separation steps.

Manufacturer documents can change and differ by model. Blue Robotics’ operating page is its BlueROV2 guidance; the VideoRay cut-tether instructions cited here are for the Pro 4 Operator’s Manual version 2.00.00. Blueye’s support listing identifies service manual revision REV C as its most recent version at access time. Use the current manual and emergency plan for the exact ROV, tether, and operating context.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does losing control or telemetry mean the tether has physically separated?

Not necessarily. A vehicle can stop responding because of a control, telemetry, or power problem without the tether physically parting. Use the system’s status information and procedures to distinguish those failures; do not assume a fail-safe or other signal is available unless the exact ROV documentation confirms it.

What should a crew do first if tether separation is suspected?

Treat it as an incident: alert the responsible supervisor and vessel team, establish the last known position and time of reliable contact, and follow the operation’s emergency plan. Use available tracking information under that plan; recovery depends on the vehicle and operating context.

Can an ROV be recovered after its tether separates?

Sometimes, but recovery is not guaranteed. The vehicle may sink, drift, or surface depending on buoyancy and conditions, and tracking or lifting may not be possible. A beacon or a marked separation point can assist a search but does not ensure success.

Can a cut ROV tether be repaired in the field?

It depends on the model and tether. VideoRay’s Pro 4 manual identifies hot glue or silicone/RTV glue as possible field-repair materials and says a more permanent repair should be made at the first opportunity. Confirm compatibility in the exact system documentation; those materials are not universal repair recommendations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I pull in the tether as fast as possible if my BlueROV2 loses connection?

Blue Robotics’ BlueROV2 guidance advises retrieving it at a moderate pace if power or the QGroundControl connection is lost, and says to disarm before recovery. It also advises keeping the tether away from propellers, boats, and sharp objects and avoiding excess tether in the water. Follow the guidance for your exact model.

The Bottom Line

A loss of telemetry is not proof of a cut tether, and a confirmed separation does not guarantee the ROV can be recovered. Alert the responsible team, establish the last known position, and follow the emergency plan and exact model guidance. Commercial work-class recovery procedures, BlueROV2 retrieval advice, and VideoRay Pro 4 cut-tether steps are different contexts—not interchangeable checklists.
