When a website’s HTTPS/TLS certificate expires, browsers treat the certificate as invalid. Visitors may see a certificate warning, an interstitial security page, or a complete connection failure. Client applications such as APIs, mobile apps, and automated integrations can also report certificate errors. The site operator must renew or replace the certificate and deploy the replacement correctly; until then, normal HTTPS access may remain unavailable.
The exact screen differs by browser and application. An active HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) policy makes the failure stricter: browsers enforcing HSTS do not offer a click-through bypass for the certificate error.
What an expired HTTPS certificate means
An HTTPS certificate binds a website’s hostname to a cryptographic key and has a defined validity period. After the end of that period, a browser cannot accept the presented certificate as valid, even if the certificate was correctly issued when it was new. During the TLS connection setup, the browser checks the certificate’s validity and refuses to treat the session as a trusted HTTPS connection when the certificate is expired.

MDN describes the security consequence plainly: “Web browsers prevent and block traffic to domains with broken certificates since the communication with the server would be compromised.” (MDN Web Docs) The wording and severity vary by browser, but the underlying result is the same: the browser cannot verify the server with the certificate it received.

What visitors see in a browser
Warning or interstitial page
Most browsers stop before loading the page and display a certificate warning. The page may identify the problem as an expired certificate, an insecure connection, or a certificate error. The browser can show a prominent “Back to safety” action and, in some situations, an advanced option with more technical details.
Navigation blocked completely
Some browsers or configurations do not provide a bypass at all. A managed device, security product, embedded browser, or application may terminate the connection instead of displaying an interactive warning. Microsoft notes that users and client applications accessing services with expired SSL certificates receive errors, so the impact is not limited to people using a desktop browser (Microsoft Learn, updated April 27, 2023).
Applications and integrations fail too
API clients, command-line tools, background jobs, payment callbacks, monitoring systems, and mobile applications often validate certificates without offering a user-facing override. A certificate that appears to work for one person in one browser can still break an integration that enforces validation strictly. Typical symptoms include TLS handshake failures, “certificate expired” messages, failed health checks, and repeated connection retries.

There is no universal answer. A browser may expose a temporary “continue” or advanced option for some certificate failures, while another browser or application may refuse the connection. Security policy, device management, and the type of certificate error all affect the available choices.

HSTS makes expiry a hard failure
HTTP Strict Transport Security tells a browser to use HTTPS for a host and to treat certificate problems as non-negotiable. When a host has an active HSTS policy, a browser enforcing that policy does not let the visitor click through an expired-certificate warning. MDN explains that HSTS is intended to prevent users from bypassing certificate errors and that browsers should terminate the connection when the certificate cannot be validated (MDN’s Strict-Transport-Security reference; MDN’s TLS configuration guide).

Do not disable certificate validation, suppress warnings, or instruct visitors to ignore the error as a permanent workaround. Those actions remove an important identity and integrity check. MDN’s guidance is to correct the certificate problem rather than bypass it.
What a visitor should do
- Check the address. Confirm that the hostname is the one you intended to visit. Do not enter credentials or payment information on a warning page.
- Do not force a bypass. If the browser offers an advanced continuation option, treat it as an emergency diagnostic choice, not a normal way to use the site. HSTS-protected hosts will not permit it.
- Use a trusted contact channel. Tell the site owner, administrator, or support team that the certificate is expired. Include the hostname, approximate time, browser or application name, and the exact error text.
- Retry only after the owner confirms a fix. Once a replacement certificate is deployed, close and reopen the browser or client if it has cached the failed connection, then try again.
How the website owner fixes an expired certificate
The remedy is to renew or replace the certificate and correctly deploy it for every affected service. Microsoft’s SharePoint guidance identifies renewal or replacement as the way to maintain uninterrupted access, but the installation commands and control-panel labels vary by hosting product and certificate setup (Microsoft Learn).
1. Identify exactly what is serving the old certificate
Start with the hostname visitors use, including any separate names for an API, administrative portal, content-delivery endpoint, mail service, or load balancer. Check the certificate currently presented on each public endpoint. An organization can renew one certificate while a different proxy, node, or listener continues serving the expired copy.

2. Renew or reissue for the correct names
Use the certificate authority or ACME client configured for the service. Confirm that the replacement covers every hostname clients will request and that the associated private key is available to the component terminating TLS. A replacement for www.example does not automatically cover an API or alternate hostname unless that name is included in the certificate’s names.
3. Install the certificate and complete chain
Import the renewed certificate, its private key, and any required intermediate certificates according to the host’s documentation. Supplying only the leaf certificate can leave some clients unable to build a trusted chain even though the certificate itself has not expired. Do not copy a platform-specific command from another server type; the correct procedure depends on the web server, reverse proxy, load balancer, operating system, and certificate format.
4. Bind the replacement to the live HTTPS listener
Select the new certificate for the HTTPS virtual host, listener, or service that receives production traffic. If traffic is distributed across multiple nodes, update every node or the certificate store used by the load balancer. Reload or restart the relevant service only as required by that platform’s documented procedure.
5. Verify what an outside client receives
Visit the hostname in a private browser window and inspect the certificate details. Confirm the expiration date is in the future, the hostname matches, the chain is complete, and the connection is being served by the intended endpoint. Repeat the check for each alternate hostname and each region or load-balancing path that can answer the request. Also run a representative API or application transaction; a browser check alone may miss a client-specific failure.

6. Check dependent systems
After deployment, review application logs, synthetic monitors, scheduled jobs, webhook deliveries, and API clients for continuing TLS errors. A process may retain an old connection or trust store, and a second endpoint may still have the expired certificate. Resolve those findings rather than asking clients to turn off validation.
How to prevent the next expiry
Automate renewal, but monitor the automation
Short-lived certificates reduce the time available for a compromised key, but they also make unattended renewal essential. Let’s Encrypt recommends checking ACME Renewal Information at least twice daily so an operator can detect authorization, deployment, or notification failures (Let’s Encrypt Integration Guide).
Use the one-third-lifetime backstop
Let’s Encrypt’s integration guidance recommends renewing when one-third of a certificate’s total lifetime remains. For its current 90-day certificates, that calculation produces a 30-day-before-expiry backstop. The 30-day figure is specific to those 90-day certificates; it is not a universal renewal schedule for every certificate authority, product, or certificate lifetime.

Alert on both expiry and deployment
- Set alerts well before the certificate’s end date, with escalation if no successful renewal is recorded.
- Monitor the certificate actually served from the public hostname, not only the certificate stored on an internal server.
- Record renewal, installation, reload, and verification events so an operator can distinguish “renewed” from “renewed but never deployed.”
- Test all names and endpoints that clients use, including API and non-browser paths.
Common failure patterns after renewal
The certificate was renewed but visitors still see expiry
The public listener may still reference the old certificate, a reverse proxy may be in front of the renewed server, or one load-balanced node may not have been updated. Inspect the certificate from outside the network and compare each endpoint rather than relying on the certificate-management dashboard alone.

Browsers work but an application fails
The application may connect to a different hostname, require an intermediate certificate that the browser already cached, or use a trust store with different rules. Capture the application’s exact TLS error and test the same hostname and port from the application environment.
The warning changed after installation
Replacing an expired certificate can expose a separate problem, such as a hostname mismatch or incomplete chain. Treat the new error as a distinct configuration issue: verify names, chain delivery, private-key pairing, and the active listener.
What certificate expiry does—and does not—tell you
Expiry tells you that the certificate presented for the connection is outside its stated validity period. It does not, by itself, establish that an attacker intercepted the session or that every endpoint belonging to an organization is affected. It does establish that a validating browser or client no longer has a valid certificate for authenticating that connection, so normal HTTPS use should stop until the operator corrects the deployment.
