Your Android phone will usually keep turning on and running apps after security support ends. The important change is that it may stop receiving fixes for newly addressed vulnerabilities in the phone’s software. That increases exposure over time, but it does not mean the phone is automatically compromised or that an attack is inevitable.

What “stops getting security updates” means

A security update contains fixes for vulnerabilities in software used by the phone. Android’s monthly security bulletins describe issues and identify the patch levels that address them. If a vulnerability affects a component on your device and the device no longer receives the relevant manufacturer update, that fix may never be installed on it.

This is a gap in future patch coverage, not a remote switch that disables the handset. An unsupported phone can still start, connect to networks, and run apps. Its risk depends on factors such as which vulnerabilities affect its components, whether they are exploitable in the circumstances, what mitigations are active, and how the phone is used. Support status alone does not prove that a particular phone has been attacked.

Security updates are also not the same thing as a new Android version. A phone might stop receiving major operating-system upgrades before or after its security support ends. Check the device’s actual security update level and the manufacturer’s commitment for its exact model rather than using the Android version as a substitute.

What the Android security bulletin tells you

Google’s October 2026 Android Security Bulletin, published October 5 and updated October 8, gives a concrete example of how patch levels work. It says security patch levels of 2026-10-01 or higher address the issues described in that bulletin. That date applies to that month’s bulletin; it is not a permanent threshold or a statement about every phone’s current patch status.

The bulletin’s most severe listed issue is a critical vulnerability in the System component that could allow local escalation of privilege without additional execution privileges or user interaction, assuming platform and service mitigations are turned off for development or successfully bypassed. This illustrates why fixes matter, but it does not establish that every unsupported phone is affected by that issue, or predict how likely a particular device is to be attacked.

Google’s Android Security Team says in that bulletin, “We encourage all users to update to the latest version of Android where possible.” The useful question for an owner is whether the exact handset is still receiving the updates that apply to it—not simply whether a newer Android version exists.

Firmware, Google Play system, and app updates are different

Some phones may continue receiving Google Play system updates or app updates after full firmware support has ended. Google tracks Android security update status separately from Google Play system status, and its bulletin says Android 10 and later devices may receive both types of updates. Therefore, an old security patch date does not by itself tell you whether the Play system status has changed too.

Update channel What to check What it does not establish
Android security update The date or patch level shown in Settings, and whether the manufacturer still offers updates for the exact model. A phone’s Android version alone does not establish that its security patches are current. Android’s update guidance.
Google Play system update Its separate status in Settings; Android 10 and later devices may receive this update channel as well as security updates. A current Play system status does not establish that every device component is receiving the manufacturer’s full security support. Android Security Bulletin.
App updates Whether installed apps continue to offer updates through their normal update channel. App updates do not establish that the phone’s operating-system or other device components have been patched.

These channels can help address different issues, but they are not interchangeable. Google Play Protect is another mitigation layer, not a replacement for missing firmware fixes. Google says Play Protect is enabled by default on devices with Google Mobile Services and is particularly important for people who install apps from outside Google Play. Keep it enabled where available, but do not interpret that protection as proof that every device vulnerability has been patched.

How to check your phone’s patch status

  1. Identify the exact device. In Settings, find the manufacturer, model name or number, and Android version. Menu wording and locations vary among manufacturers, so use Settings search for terms such as “Android version,” “security update,” or “software update” if necessary.
  2. Read both update dates. Record the Android security update level and the Google Play system update level separately. The Android update guide explains general update-level checks. Do not treat one date as a substitute for the other.
  3. Check for updates offered to the device. Google recommends updating to the latest Android version where possible. Pixel owners can use the update status and check-for-update instructions in Pixel Help. Other manufacturers may have different Settings labels and update procedures.
  4. Look up the model-specific support terms. Use the manufacturer’s published schedule for that exact model and, where applicable, region. Do not infer an end date from another phone in the same brand family or from the Android version installed.
  5. Check again if an update is pending. If an update is offered, install it and then recheck the displayed security level. A phone may need to download and install an update before its status reflects the new level; if no update is offered, that alone does not reveal whether the device is temporarily waiting or has reached the end of its support period, so verify the model’s published policy.

Why support dates must be checked by model

Android does not have one universal support end date that applies to every handset. Manufacturers’ commitments can differ by model, and a commitment may also be tied to when or where a device first became available. That is why the model name, region, and date basis matter when you are checking a promise.

For example, Google’s published policy gives Pixel 8 and later seven years of updates, counted from each model’s first availability on the US Google Store. That is a specific commitment for those Pixel models under those terms, not a rule for all Android phones or necessarily every regional sale. Check the relevant entry in Google’s Pixel software-update policy rather than applying the seven-year figure to another device.

When comparing support policies, distinguish the stated duration from the date it starts. A promise measured from first availability is not necessarily measured from the day you personally bought the phone. Also check whether the published terms cover the exact model and region you are considering.

Can you keep using a phone after support ends?

There is no single yes-or-no answer that fits every owner. The handset may remain useful, but you will need to decide whether its remaining value and role justify using a device without a clear path to future manufacturer patches. A phone used for low-sensitivity tasks presents a different decision from one used for banking, work credentials, private records, or other sensitive accounts and data.

Use these factors together rather than treating any one of them as a safety score:

  • Exact support status: the model’s published end date and the date of its latest Android security patch.
  • Other updates: whether Google Play system updates still arrive, while recognizing that this is a separate status.
  • How you use the phone: the sensitivity of the accounts and data you access on it.
  • Available mitigations: install updates that are still offered and keep Google Play Protect enabled where available, especially if you install apps from outside Google Play.
  • Practical alternatives: the phone’s remaining usefulness and cost compared with a replacement whose exact model has a published update commitment.

If the phone handles sensitive accounts or data and has no further manufacturer security updates, replacing it with a supported device gives you a clearer route to future patch coverage. If you keep it, make the choice with the known support gap in mind; neither a separate Play system update nor Play Protect proves that missing firmware patches have been restored.

What to check before buying a replacement

Do not compare phones only by their Android version or by a headline support-duration number. Confirm the exact model, the published security-update period, when that period begins, and whether the terms apply in your region. A clear commitment makes it easier to know how long the manufacturer intends to provide updates, though it cannot predict the timing or content of every future patch.

Before deciding whether to replace a working phone, compare its current patch date and support status with the replacement’s stated terms. Also factor in how much you rely on the current handset and whether you use it for sensitive information. The cost-benefit decision belongs to the owner: an unsupported phone is not automatically compromised, but a replacement with ongoing security support offers a more defined path for addressing future device vulnerabilities.

Common misunderstandings

  • “The phone will stop working.” End of security support generally means updates may stop, not that the handset is remotely disabled.
  • “A new Android version means my patches are current.” Version and security patch level are separate facts; inspect the displayed patch status.
  • “A current Play system update means everything is patched.” Google tracks it separately from Android security updates, and it should not be treated as proof of complete manufacturer support.
  • “Unsupported means already hacked.” Support status shows that future fixes may be unavailable; it does not establish compromise or guarantee an attack.
  • “All Android phones get the same support period.” Update commitments are model-specific, so check the exact device and terms.

Official sources reviewed here do not establish a broad percentage of Android phones in use that have stopped receiving security updates. Bulletin patch dates and severity ratings describe particular technical issues; they are not estimates of how many owners are affected or of an individual owner’s likelihood of attack.
