When a Windows version reaches end of support, the PC normally keeps working. Microsoft stops delivering routine feature and software updates, security fixes, and technical assistance for that release. The computer is not remotely disabled, but its unpatched operating system becomes increasingly exposed to newly discovered vulnerabilities, and future applications or hardware may become less compatible.
Windows 10 version 22H2 reached that point for most consumer and business editions on October 14, 2025. The practical response is to identify the exact edition and release, check Windows 11 eligibility, back up your data, and choose a supported upgrade, a replacement PC, or a clearly time-limited security-update option where one is still available.
What “end of support” means
End of support is the date Microsoft stops servicing a particular Windows release under its normal lifecycle. It applies to a specific version and edition, not simply to the word “Windows” on the computer. After the date, Microsoft says affected PCs continue to function, but they no longer receive routine software and feature updates, security updates and fixes, or technical support.
The change is gradual from the user’s point of view. Your desktop, files, installed programs and many peripherals can continue to work on the next day. The important difference is that newly discovered Windows vulnerabilities will not receive the ordinary fixes that supported releases receive. Antivirus software can reduce some threats, but it cannot replace missing operating-system patches.
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
What stops
- Security servicing: the release no longer receives the normal stream of security fixes.
- Quality and feature updates: Microsoft stops routine bug fixes, reliability improvements and new features for that release.
- Technical assistance: official support for problems specific to the unsupported release is no longer provided.
- Compatibility assurance: newer applications, drivers and hardware may eventually require a supported Windows version.
What does not happen automatically
Microsoft does not normally turn off an unsupported PC, erase its files or block the desktop. You can sign in and use existing software. Continuing to operate it is a risk decision, however, because the absence of operating-system fixes is permanent unless you move to a supported release or an eligible extended-security program.
Windows 10’s support date and the edition exception
Windows 10 version 22H2, released in September 2022, was the final Windows 10 feature update for the mainstream editions covered by Microsoft’s lifecycle announcement. For those editions, support ended on October 14, 2025.
| Edition or product named by Microsoft | Windows 10 support status |
|---|---|
| Home | Support ended October 14, 2025 |
| Pro | Support ended October 14, 2025 |
| Enterprise | Support ended October 14, 2025 |
| Education | Support ended October 14, 2025 |
| Enterprise 2015 LTSB | Support ended October 14, 2025 in the named announcement |
| IoT Enterprise LTSB 2015 | Support ended October 14, 2025 in the named announcement |
| Other specialized LTSC or embedded editions | Not necessarily the same date; check the edition’s individual lifecycle |
A machine running an older Windows 10 feature release could have reached its own servicing limit earlier. Conversely, a specialized long-term-servicing or embedded installation can have a different end date. Use the installed release and edition, not a product name alone, when deciding whether the PC is supported.

Before choosing an upgrade or replacement, record the edition and release shown by the PC.
- Press
Windows + R, typewinver, and press Enter. Record the Windows version and build shown in the dialog. - Open Settings > System > About. Under Windows specifications, note the edition, version and install date.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and check for any pending updates or a message identifying the installed release.
- Compare those details with Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle information for that exact edition. Do not assume that another edition on the same PC has the same deadline.
If Windows Update offers a newer supported release, install it only after checking backups, storage, application compatibility and the device’s recovery options.
What happens to security after support ends
The operating system contains core components used by the kernel, networking, authentication, file handling and device drivers. When a vulnerability is found in one of those components after end of support, the unsupported release is outside the normal patch program. That does not create a measured, instant probability of compromise; the actual exposure depends on the computer’s software, network, accounts and user behavior. It does mean the PC loses the regular correction mechanism that supported systems receive.

Microsoft’s normal Windows update publication cycle is generally the second Tuesday of each month. A supported release can receive security and non-security quality updates during its servicing period. An unsupported Windows 10 installation does not receive that ordinary monthly coverage.
Why antivirus is not a substitute
Antivirus can detect or block some malicious files and behavior, but it does not rewrite vulnerable Windows components. Keep security software enabled, use a standard account for everyday work where practical, avoid unknown downloads and maintain offline or otherwise protected backups. These measures reduce risk; they do not restore Windows security servicing.
Three practical paths after end of support
There is no single mandatory action for every owner. Compare the available paths against hardware eligibility, the time you need, the sensitivity of your data and the cost of replacing the device.
| Path | Eligibility | Security coverage | Cost and disruption | Time horizon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upgrade the existing PC to Windows 11 | The PC must meet Microsoft’s Windows 11 hardware requirements; eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs can be offered a free upgrade | Routine updates for the installed Windows 11 release while that release is supported | No Windows license charge is described for an eligible upgrade, but installation, backups and application checks are required | Depends on the Windows 11 edition and feature release |
| Buy a new Windows 11 PC | Useful when the current device fails compatibility checks or is due for replacement | Supported Windows 11 servicing on the new device, subject to its installed release | Hardware purchase plus data and application migration | Depends on the release and edition supplied |
| Use consumer ESU for Windows 10 | Microsoft’s offer targets personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 devices in most markets and excludes organization-managed or enterprise-licensed devices | Critical and important security updates only; no feature updates or return to ordinary support | Enrollment choices vary by region; Microsoft lists settings synchronization, 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time US$30 payment plus applicable tax in the cited offer | The stated consumer update end date was October 13, 2026 |
| Remain on unsupported Windows | Technically possible on a functioning PC | No normal Windows 10 security fixes | No migration cost, but increasing security and compatibility exposure | Indefinite only in the sense that the PC may continue to run; it has no supported lifecycle |
Upgrade an eligible Windows 10 PC
Microsoft directs users to its PC Health Check application and official Windows 11 system requirements. Run the compatibility check rather than relying on the computer’s age or a retailer’s label. If the device is eligible and Windows Update offers the upgrade, review the release notes and make a recovery plan before accepting it.
- Install or open PC Health Check and run the Windows 11 eligibility check.
- Back up documents, photos, browser data and any application-specific files. Windows Backup can help transfer files and settings, but verify that the files are actually available in the destination location.
- Confirm that essential applications, printers, accessibility tools and security products support Windows 11.
- Connect the PC to reliable power and use Settings > Windows Update to follow Microsoft’s offered upgrade path. Do not treat bypassing hardware requirements as the default solution.
- After installation, open Windows Update again, install all available updates, check Device Manager for driver problems and test the applications you use most.
When replacing the PC makes more sense
A new Windows 11 desktop or laptop is a practical choice when PC Health Check reports incompatible hardware, the existing machine is unreliable, or the cost and effort of repair approach the value of the device. Replacement also gives you a clean opportunity to move to supported hardware rather than extending an unsupported platform.
Before buying, list the programs you must keep, the files and settings that need migration, the ports and accessories you use, and any license or sign-in requirements. Back up the old PC before the first setup step. Keep it powered off or disconnected from sensitive networks until you have confirmed that the new machine contains the files you need.

How consumer ESU fits—and where it does not
Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) guidance describes a temporary bridge for eligible personal-use devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 in most markets. Organization-managed and enterprise-licensed devices are excluded from that consumer offer and follow different licensing arrangements.
The cited consumer enrollment choices include syncing PC settings, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or paying a one-time US$30 plus applicable tax. The option displayed can vary by region and account. ESU supplies specified critical and important security updates; it does not provide feature updates, general technical support or a new Windows 10 feature release.
The stated final date for consumer ESU security updates was October 13, 2026. Because that date has passed, check the offer shown on the individual PC and Microsoft’s current local terms before assuming enrollment or further coverage is available. ESU should be treated as a short transition, not an indefinite alternative to a supported Windows installation.

An application can continue to run after the operating system stops receiving fixes, but its support policy is separate. Microsoft 365 Apps are an important example: Microsoft says they continue to run on Windows 10 and receive security updates there through October 10, 2028. That commitment does not extend Windows 10’s operating-system security fixes or technical support, and Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 to avoid performance and reliability problems over time.
| Application or suite | What Microsoft states | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Apps | Continue to run on Windows 10; security updates stated through October 10, 2028 | Applications may remain usable, but the Windows 10 platform is still unsupported |
| Office 2016 and Office 2019 | Support ended | Check the exact license and plan a supported application path |
| Office 2021 and Office 2024 | Continue to run on Windows 10 but are unsupported there | Running is not the same as receiving support for that Windows combination |
Other software vendors set their own requirements. Check each program’s supported operating systems before migrating, especially for accounting, accessibility, backup, security, engineering and peripheral-control software.

Moving to Windows 11 is not a one-time exemption from lifecycle management. Each annual Windows 11 feature update starts its own servicing period. Microsoft states that Home and Pro editions receive 24 months, while Enterprise and Education editions receive 36 months. The exact end date depends on the installed release and edition.

A safe transition checklist
- Identify the exact Windows edition, version and build.
- Confirm the lifecycle date for that specific release.
- Make at least one verified backup of personal files before changing the operating system or device.
- Check Windows 11 eligibility with PC Health Check and review the official requirements.
- Inventory essential applications, drivers, printers, accessibility tools and licenses.
- Choose an upgrade, replacement PC or eligible temporary security option based on your time and budget.
- After migration, install all available updates and verify encryption, sign-in, backup and security settings.
- Remove the old PC from sensitive networks or retire it securely when it is no longer needed.
Common questions
Will my Windows 10 computer stop working on the end date?
Usually no. It can continue to boot and run existing software, but Microsoft no longer supplies the normal Windows 10 software, feature and security updates or technical assistance for the covered editions.
Can I keep using Windows 10 with antivirus?
You can, but antivirus alone does not compensate for missing Windows security fixes. Continued use should be a temporary, risk-managed choice rather than a claim that the operating system is fully protected.
Is upgrading to Windows 11 free?
Microsoft says eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 PCs can upgrade to Windows 11 for free when they meet the hardware requirements and receive the Windows Update offer. The eligibility check and offer are device-specific.
Does Microsoft 365 support keep Windows 10 supported?
No. Microsoft 365 Apps may receive security updates on Windows 10 through October 10, 2028, but that is an application commitment and does not restore Windows 10 operating-system support.
