When a streaming service confirms artificial streams, the affected plays can be removed from royalty calculations, public counts and charts. Spotify may also remove a track from playlists, while a label or distributor may issue a warning, charge a policy-based fee, remove releases or suspend an account in serious or repeated cases. Apple Music describes stream-manipulation adjustments and says a human reviews suspected manipulation before content is removed. An unexplained spike is not, by itself, proof of fraud, so the safest response is to stop any guaranteed-stream promotion, preserve your records and contact your label or distributor promptly.
What “artificial streams” means
Artificial streams are plays generated or coordinated to inflate listening figures rather than reflect genuine listener choice. Platform policies describe activity involving bots, scripts, fake accounts, prohibited looping, coordinated manipulation and paid services that promise a fixed number of streams or playlist placement. Spotify says, “Paid 3rd-party services that guarantee streams aren’t legitimate.” Apple Music similarly includes bots, fake accounts and other prohibited methods in its definition.
A stream can look unusual without being artificial. A legitimate release may attract listeners in one country, a fan community may replay a song heavily, or a playlist may send an unexpected surge. The official pages from Spotify and Apple do not publish a complete detection formula or a universal numerical trigger. They also do not say that every abnormal spike is fraudulent. A platform normally acts on activity it has identified as confirmed or suspected manipulation under its own review process.
The immediate consequences after confirmation
Royalties can be withheld or adjusted
A confirmed artificial play does not necessarily become a paid play. Spotify states that such streams do not earn royalties. Apple’s provider reports include financial fields for stream-manipulation adjustments. In practical terms, the money associated with the affected activity may be excluded before it reaches the royalty statement paid to a label, distributor or rights holder.

Spotify’s artist guidance puts it plainly: “Those streams do not earn royalties.” The adjustment applies to the artificial activity, not automatically to every legitimate stream for the song. The exact accounting treatment and timing can depend on the service’s reporting cycle and the intermediary that pays you.
Public numbers and chart impact can change
Spotify says confirmed artificial streams are removed from public stream numbers and charts and do not positively influence recommendation algorithms. A track can therefore show a lower public total, lose chart eligibility or stop receiving algorithmic exposure even if a private dashboard briefly displayed the plays.
Playlist placement can be affected
Depending on the severity of the activity, Spotify may remove a track from playlists. That can include losing exposure that was not itself fraudulent but was associated with a track under investigation. Playlist removal is a platform action, separate from any fee or account decision made by a distributor.

Catalog and account sanctions are possible
Spotify shares monthly reports of confirmed artificial streaming with labels and distributors. Those intermediaries may warn an artist, apply a penalty under their own agreement, remove releases from streaming services or suspend an account in flagrant or repeated cases. Spotify also reserves the right to remove manipulated content in repeated or egregious situations.
These outcomes are not automatic for every flagged play. Spotify and Apple describe a range of responses based on severity, repetition and the parties involved. A distributor’s artist-facing fee is not the same thing as Spotify’s own charge to a label or distributor.

Spotify’s documented policy
What Spotify removes from the accounting
Spotify says confirmed artificial streams do not earn royalties, do not count toward public stream numbers or charts and do not positively affect recommendations. The service does not publish a universal threshold at which every account receives the same sanction, so an artist cannot infer a guaranteed outcome from a stream count alone.
The April 1, 2024 charge is aimed at intermediaries
Spotify introduced a per-track deterrent charge to labels and distributors for flagrant artificial streaming effective April 1, 2024. Spotify says the charge applies only when a track has a very high rate of artificial streaming. The policy date is public; Spotify’s cited guidance does not state a universal penalty amount.
That charge is levied on the label or distributor. If your distributor later bills you, the amount and legal basis come from your distributor’s contract and circumstances. Do not assume that every distributor passes through Spotify’s charge, uses the same calculation or imposes a fee at all.
What to do when streams arrived without your consent
Spotify’s artist guidance recognizes unwanted playlist activity as a scenario. If a playlist or promotion generated streams you did not request, Spotify advises artists to tell their distributor or label immediately and share information about genuine promotion methods. Spotify also provides a route for reporting suspicious playlists. Reporting the activity is not a promise that every flag will be reversed, but it creates a record that you raised the issue promptly.
What Spotify forbids
Do not use bots, scripts, automated looping, fake accounts or coordinated attempts to manipulate listening. Spotify also warns against tactics marketed as ways to evade detection. There is no legitimate workaround for a service’s integrity controls; trying to disguise the activity can make a case more serious.

Detection reports and financial adjustments
Apple Music’s provider guidance gives labels and other partners daily Flagged Streams and In Review Content reports, monthly Excluded Streams reports and financial reporting that highlights stream-manipulation adjustments. These tools are designed for providers and rights holders rather than as a universal artist-facing appeal dashboard.

Human review comes before removal
Apple states: “Any incident involving suspected stream manipulation is always reviewed by a human before any content is taken down.” It describes removal as a last resort. That wording applies to Apple’s documented provider process; it does not promise that every suspected incident will be cleared or that review will finish within a stated period.
A narrow automatic-removal rule for AI-platform-generated songs
Apple says that when most plays for an AI-platform-generated song are manipulated, it automatically removes that song. This is a specific rule for that circumstance, not a general statement that every track with suspicious activity is automatically deleted.
The September 28, 2026 Disguised Listening Report
In an update dated September 28, 2026, Apple announced a Disguised Listening Report available through its Music Analytics API. Apple describes disguised listening as content used as cover while manipulative users target other content, and says this activity is not counted toward the Stream Manipulation Adjustment. Apple says its other daily, monthly and financial reports remain available. Availability through an API is primarily relevant to providers and rights holders with access to Apple’s analytics systems.
Apple’s provider page also claims that stream-manipulation rates on Apple Music remain “well below 1%.” That is Apple’s own reported figure, not an independently verified comparison across all services.

Why your dashboard, public count and royalty statement may disagree
Different reports answer different questions and refresh at different times. Spotify says some confirmed artificial streams may be removed before the Spotify for Artists dashboard refreshes. In other cases, a spike can remain visible privately even though Spotify has withheld the related royalties and adjusted public metrics.
For royalty questions, Spotify says, “Either way, the royalty report from your label or distributor is the most accurate source of truth for understanding royalties generated from Spotify streams.” A dashboard spike therefore does not prove that the money is payable. Public numbers can also be corrected after a private report has shown the activity.
When comparing figures, record the date, territory, track version and report type. A daily stream view, a public counter and a monthly royalty statement may cover different periods or use different adjustment stages. Ask your distributor which period was affected and whether the statement is preliminary or final.
Platform action versus distributor action
Several decisions that artists call a “fine” may come from different parties:
Recommended Free Tools
- Platform adjustment: The streaming service excludes identified artificial plays from royalties, public counts, charts or recommendations.
- Playlist decision: The platform removes a track from a playlist or withholds future playlist exposure.
- Intermediary charge: A label or distributor may pass on a contractual fee or a platform charge. Its terms determine whether and how that happens.
- Catalog action: A distributor or platform may remove a release, especially in flagrant or repeated cases.
- Account action: A distributor may warn, suspend or terminate an account under its agreement.
Spotify’s April 2024 deterrent charge is specifically described as a charge to labels and distributors for flagrant, high-rate activity on a track. It is not evidence that every artist whose song is flagged will receive a bill. A separate distributor fee, if any, must be explained by that distributor.

What to do if you receive a warning or see suspicious activity
- Stop any guaranteed-stream or guaranteed-playlist campaign. Do not continue paying a service that promises a fixed number of plays. Save the invoice, sales page, messages and campaign terms before closing the account.
- Preserve evidence. Export or screenshot notices, stream graphs, playlist URLs, dates, territories, campaign receipts and correspondence. Keep a list of promotion you actually authorized, including advertising platforms, publicist work and legitimate playlist submissions.
- Contact your label or distributor through its official support channel. Ask whether the notice concerns confirmed or suspected activity, which tracks and dates are affected, whether royalties were withheld, and what review or appeal route applies.
- Explain legitimate promotion factually. Describe where listeners were reached and provide campaign records. Do not claim certainty about traffic you cannot document, and do not invent a cause for a spike.
- Report unwanted playlists or traffic to the platform. If you did not request the playlist, say so clearly and include the playlist name, link, track and dates. Spotify specifically tells artists to report suspicious playlists and inform their distributor or label.
- Check the correct royalty report. Compare the distributor’s statement with the affected period rather than relying only on Spotify for Artists or another private dashboard.
- Pause new releases if your intermediary instructs you to do so. A distributor may need to resolve an account review before accepting additional uploads. Follow the written terms and request the reason for any restriction.
Neither Spotify nor Apple publishes a guaranteed review timeline or a single industry-wide appeal procedure. Your distributor or label is usually the party that can submit evidence to the platform on your behalf.
How to reduce the risk of an artificial-streaming flag
- Use promotion that charges for audience reach, creative work or advertising delivery rather than a guaranteed stream count.
- Reject offers promising a fixed number of plays, guaranteed editorial placement or immunity from detection.
- Review playlist and marketing contracts for language about automated traffic, incentives, bots, fake accounts or third-party networks.
- Monitor territories, listener sources and timing so you can identify an unexpected surge quickly.
- Tell your distributor promptly when traffic appears without your consent; delayed reporting makes it harder to establish what happened.
Spotify’s general recorded-music royalty-pool eligibility threshold of 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months, applied from April 2024, is unrelated to artificial-streaming penalties. Reaching or missing that threshold does not prove that streams are legitimate or manipulated.
What is still unknown
The published Spotify and Apple materials do not establish a complete detection algorithm, one universal numerical trigger, a guaranteed review deadline or identical penalties across distributors. They also do not establish that every abnormal spike is an error or that every detection is necessarily correct. Policies for other services can differ, so an artist should read the relevant service and distributor terms instead of assuming Spotify’s or Apple’s process applies everywhere.
