When a publisher delists a game from Steam, it normally stops new sales rather than removing the game from existing owners’ libraries. Valve’s Steamworks guidance says retired games remain in owners’ libraries, where those owners can still download, install, and launch them. The store page can remain reachable by direct link, but the game is removed from normal store listings. Delisting alone is not an automatic refund event, and it does not guarantee that multiplayer servers or other online features will continue.
The outcome depends on which of four situations you are dealing with: an ordinary retirement from sale, an online-service shutdown, a revoked key, or a revoked gift. Those cases look similar in the Steam client but have different access and refund consequences.
What “delisted” means on Steam
Steam uses retirement from sale for a product that a publisher no longer wants to sell. In the official Steamworks retirement guidance, Valve states that “Retired games will remain in players’ Steam libraries.” The same guidance says the store page remains accessible while the product is removed from store listings.

That distinction matters. A delisting changes whether new customers can acquire the game through the store; it does not, by itself, cancel an existing customer’s entitlement. If you bought the game before retirement, the normal expectation is that it will still appear in your library and remain available for download, installation, and launching.

“Normal expectation” is important because the retirement policy concerns the store entitlement. A game can still launch while a separate dependency—such as an authentication service, matchmaking system, account server, or other online feature—has been retired. Valve’s process asks publishers to identify server-dependent functions that will become unavailable and to explain what players should expect. The specific game’s announcement and publisher support page therefore control the online-service question.
What you can do after a game is delisted

The last row is not a contradiction of the first. Store access and service availability are separate layers: Steam can continue to recognize your ownership even when a game’s network infrastructure no longer responds.
How to download or reinstall a delisted game
If you owned the game, use the same Steam account that originally purchased or redeemed it. The game does not need to remain in the public store search results for the client to install it.

- Open Steam and sign in to the owning account. If you use multiple accounts, verify the account shown in the client before changing settings or contacting support.
- Open Library and search for the title. A delisted game may not appear in Store search, but an owned copy should normally be listed in Library.
- Select Install. Steam will use the library location selected in the installation dialog. Existing owners can download the game even though new sales have stopped.
- Wait for Steam to finish validation and installation. A successful install proves that the client can retrieve the available files; it does not prove that an online server still exists.
- Launch from Library. If the game starts to its main menu, test the offline features separately from multiplayer, login, or matchmaking.
If you previously installed the title on another computer, Steam may download it again from the available depot. The retirement guidance does not promise that every historical patch, downloadable item, launcher, or external account service will remain functional, so expect behavior to vary by game.
Why a game may launch but online play fails
Delisting is a sales-status change, not a guarantee of continuing operations. A publisher may retire a game because it no longer wants to sell it, while leaving the executable and single-player content available. It may also shut down servers at the same time or later.
Check the game’s official announcement for the exact scope of any shutdown. Look for language about dedicated servers, matchmaking, login, cloud saves, in-game purchases, anti-cheat, or an account migration. Valve’s retirement documentation specifically asks publishers to tell players about server-dependent features that will become unavailable.

- Offline content works, multiplayer does not: This usually indicates a service dependency rather than a lost Steam entitlement.
- The launcher requires a failed login: An external account or authentication service may have been retired.
- Cloud saves or purchases are missing: Those features can depend on publisher infrastructure even when local saves and the base game remain.
- The game will not start at all: Check local installation files, required runtimes, and current operating-system compatibility before concluding that delisting caused the failure.
There is no universal “delisted games stay playable online” rule. The publisher’s service notice is the relevant evidence for that particular title.

No. Delisting itself is not stated as an automatic refund trigger. Steamworks says that normal Steam refund rules apply to purchases, although Valve may extend the option in particular circumstances. The ordinary policy is described in Steam’s Common Refund Questions.

A delisted game bought months or years ago does not automatically qualify merely because the store page disappeared. Explain the concrete problem in the request—such as a cancellation, an undelivered promised feature, or a service change—and let Steam evaluate it under the account’s purchase history and circumstances.

How long an approved refund takes
Steam Support says an approved refund can take up to seven days to appear. Approved refunds issued as Steam Wallet credit may appear within 24–48 hours. International payment methods can take longer. These are processing windows, not a promise that every request will be approved.
What to check if the game disappeared from your library
Before assuming that delisting removed your entitlement, work through Steam’s account and library checks. Steam lists the common causes in Games Are Missing from my Library.

- Confirm the account. Sign out if necessary and sign in to the account that purchased, activated, or received the game. A game owned by a different family member or account will not appear as your entitlement.
- Clear restrictive library filters. Remove collection, installed-only, operating-system, or other filters that could hide the entry.
- Check Hidden Games. Steam allows titles to be hidden from the normal Library view. Restore the game to the visible library if it appears there.
- Search by the exact title. Publishers sometimes change names, editions, or package entries. Search results in Library are more useful than the public Store search for a retired product.
- Review account history and support records. If the title was a gift or key activation, determine whether the original entitlement was later revoked rather than simply delisted.
These checks distinguish a display problem from an entitlement problem. A missing tile is not proof that Valve removed an ordinary retired game from every owner’s account.

Steam says the game is uninstalled, but its files are still on the disk
Steam Support’s installed-games troubleshooting guidance covers this situation. The client may lose track of an existing installation after a drive letter change, a library move, an operating-system reinstall, or a damaged library configuration.
- Find the game folder on disk. Verify that it is inside a Steam library folder rather than an unrelated backup or manually created directory.
- Open Steam’s Storage Manager. Confirm that the drive and library containing the folder are registered. If the library is missing, add the existing library location through Storage Manager.
- Start the installation from Library. Choose the same library location. Steam may detect the files already present and validate them instead of downloading everything again.
- Let validation complete. Missing or damaged files can be reacquired. Do not delete the existing folder until Steam has finished checking it.
File recognition repairs the local installation state; it does not restore a revoked key, a revoked gift, or a discontinued online service. If the title is absent from the account after these checks, investigate ownership rather than repeatedly reinstalling files.
Delisting versus revoked access: the distinction that changes the answer
Ordinary retirement leaves the entitlement in place. Revocation removes the entitlement itself. Steam treats revoked CD keys and revoked gifts as separate support cases, and neither should be described as a normal delisting.

According to Steam’s Revoked CD Keys article, a revoked key is removed. To play again, Steam says the user would need to purchase the game through Steam, activate another valid key, or receive a gift copy. A store retirement does not create a replacement key or reinstate a key that was revoked.
Revoked gift
Steam’s Revoked Gifts guidance explains that a gift refunded because of fraud or a payment dispute can be removed from the recipient’s library. The recipient is notified that the game is no longer available. In that case, changing filters or reinstalling local files cannot restore access because the underlying gift entitlement is gone.

A practical decision path
- Was the game merely removed from sale? Look for it in the owning account’s Library rather than Store search.
- Is it hidden or filtered? Clear filters and inspect Hidden Games.
- Is the entry present but the installation missing? Register the correct Steam library and start installation so Steam can recognize existing files.
- Does the game install but online features fail? Check the publisher’s service announcement; this is likely separate from store delisting.
- Was the title activated by a key or received as a gift? Look for a revocation notice. Key or gift revocation requires a different remedy than a retired product.
- Do you want a refund? Submit through Steam Support. Use the 14-day and under-two-hour rule as the standard test, and describe any cancellation or undelivered feature that may justify case-by-case review.
The short version is straightforward: a genuine Steam retirement normally preserves an owner’s library access, but it does not preserve every server, and it does not guarantee a refund. If the game vanished entirely, first rule out account, filter, hidden-game, library-folder, key-revocation, and gift-revocation causes.
