A smart lock can lose two different things: electrical power at the lock, or the internet connection used by its app and remote services. A dead lock battery can stop electronic unlocking, while an internet outage often affects only remote features. Your actual backup options depend on the exact lock, its cylinder, any hub or gateway, and whether local Bluetooth, a keypad, biometrics, or a key remains available.
The short answer: power loss and internet loss are different failures
If the lock’s own batteries are empty, its motor, keypad, fingerprint reader, and wireless electronics may stop responding. A mechanical key, an interior thumb-turn or rotary knob, or a model-specific emergency-power input may still let you open the door. Some locks provide temporary power through USB-C, a power bank, or external 9V contacts, but those methods are not interchangeable and are not present on every model.
If the lock still has battery power but your Wi-Fi or internet connection fails, the lock may continue to work at the door. Local Bluetooth control, a keypad, fingerprint access, and a mechanical key can remain available. What usually disappears first is anything that must reach a cloud service: remote unlock commands, status checks from outside the home, notifications, integrations, and automatic features that depend on an online connection.
A mains-power failure adds another layer. A battery-powered lock can remain usable while the router, bridge, or gateway goes offline. In that situation, the lock itself may work locally but become unreachable from outside. If the gateway has a battery backup or the router is on an uninterruptible power supply, remote access may continue; otherwise it normally will not.

What happens when the lock battery dies?
Electronic entry can stop
When the internal battery is fully depleted, the lock may not be able to run its motor or accept commands. An app can still display the lock, but sending a command cannot revive hardware that has no power. A lock that normally opens with a keypad, fingerprint, phone, or proximity feature may therefore appear completely unresponsive.
A mechanical key may still work
SimpliSafe’s support page for its Smart Lock says that the existing deadbolt key will still work if the smart lock dies before its batteries are replaced. That applies to the named product and to an installation in which the keyed cylinder remains mechanically operable; it is not a guarantee for every retrofit lock. Nuki similarly says its interior rotary knob remains usable when the battery or power pack is empty. Outside entry on a Nuki installation depends on a cylinder that has an emergency-and-hazard function, which allows a key outside to operate even when another key is in the cylinder inside.
Emergency power is model-specific
Manufacturers use different emergency-power designs:

- Xiaomi’s Automatic Smart Door Lock has a Type-C emergency charging interface on the bottom of the exterior panel. Its FAQ says a power bank and cable can provide enough power to unlock the door; the battery should then be replaced.
- Lockly describes a 9V battery held against exterior contacts on applicable models. This is a temporary supply method, not a universal procedure for all of its locks.
- TP-Link’s Tapo support information describes temporarily powering supported locks from a power bank when the battery is dead. The unlocking method available afterward depends on the model.
Do not insert a random cable, connect a 9V battery, or apply a power bank unless the installation manual explicitly documents that interface. A connector that looks similar can have different electrical requirements, and some locks have no external power contacts at all.
Low-battery warnings are not standardized
Xiaomi says its named lock issues a low-battery alert below 20% and estimates about three weeks of theoretical operation at that warning point. That is a manufacturer estimate for one product and usage profile, not a category-wide reserve. SimpliSafe says its Smart Lock provides warnings for multiple weeks before the battery is exhausted, without making that interval a universal rule. Cold temperatures, motor load, traffic, battery age, and wireless activity can shorten the remaining time.
What happens when Wi-Fi or the internet goes offline?
Local controls can continue working
Wyze’s support guidance says that, even when Wi-Fi is down, a user can unlock manually with a key or connect to the lock over Bluetooth to issue lock and unlock commands. It also states that Auto-Unlock will not trigger while offline. This illustrates the usual split: a phone close enough to communicate directly may work, while a command sent from another location cannot reach the lock.

Nuki likewise says that an internet or Wi-Fi failure prevents control over the internet but allows a phone within Bluetooth range to control the lock locally. The exact range, pairing state, and required app mode vary by model, so test local control before an emergency rather than assuming that any nearby phone will connect.

Remote access may require several powered components
Cloud control is often a chain: the lock must have power, the hub or bridge must have power, the router must be running, and the internet service must be reachable. Kwikset’s Kevo Plus documentation says its gateway needs both power and internet for remote access. If either is lost, local phone-and-Bluetooth control remains available, but remote control does not.
A Wi-Fi outage and an internet-service outage can look identical in the app, yet the remedy differs. If the router is operating but the provider connection is down, local network features may still function while cloud commands fail. If the router itself is off, a bridge that depends on it may also disappear. In either case, a mechanical key or local method is the dependable way to enter from outside the wireless network.

How a household power cut changes the result
Most consumer smart locks use replaceable batteries or a rechargeable pack, so an outage at the electrical panel does not automatically drain the lock. It can, however, shut down the networking equipment that makes remote access possible. A powered gateway connected to a dead router cannot relay commands, even if the lock is fully charged.
To preserve remote access during an outage, the lock’s bridge or hub, router, and modem would all need suitable backup power, and the internet provider would need to remain online. A small uninterruptible power supply can keep equipment running for a limited time, but it cannot compensate for a dead lock battery or an external service outage. Treat this as an availability measure, not a substitute for a physical entry method.
What to do when you are at the door
- Identify which dependency failed. Check whether the lock shows any lights, sounds, keypad response, or motor activity. If the lock responds locally but the app says it is unreachable, suspect Wi-Fi, the gateway, or the internet rather than the lock battery.
- Try the documented local method. Stand within the manufacturer’s stated Bluetooth range and open the lock’s app. Use Bluetooth, a keypad code, fingerprint, or another local credential only if that model supports it. Do not repeatedly send cloud commands while the network is down; they cannot reach an offline gateway.
- Use the mechanical key if installed. Keep the key accessible outside the home, not only inside a locked room or vehicle. For retrofit locks, confirm that the cylinder can be operated from outside and, where relevant, has an emergency-and-hazard function.
- Apply emergency power only as the manual specifies. Locate the external USB-C port, 9V contacts, or other interface described for your exact model. Connect the approved power source, wait for the lock to indicate power, and unlock using the prescribed method. Remove temporary power and replace or recharge the main battery afterward.
- Do not force the door or disassemble the lock. Prying, drilling, or removing the interior assembly can damage the deadbolt and may create a security problem. If none of the documented methods works, contact the manufacturer’s support service or a qualified locksmith and explain that the lock is unpowered or offline.
Prepare before an outage or dead battery
- Record the exact make, model, firmware-dependent setup, and battery type. Save the emergency-entry page from the manual where you can read it without the lock’s app.
- Test every entry path while the door is open: key, keypad, fingerprint, Bluetooth, interior turn control, and any external-power procedure your model provides.
- Keep a fresh set of the specified batteries available. Replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions rather than mixing old and new cells or substituting an incompatible chemistry.
- Store the physical key somewhere reachable during a phone, router, or power failure. A key locked inside the house is not an outside backup.
- If remote access matters, identify every component in the path: lock, bridge or gateway, router, modem, and cloud service. Consider backup power for the networking equipment, while recognizing that it cannot fix an empty lock battery or an internet-provider outage.
- Check notification behavior. A low-battery alert delivered only through a cloud service may not arrive during an internet outage, so inspect the lock locally as part of routine maintenance.
How to evaluate a smart lock’s resilience
When comparing a smart lock with a physical key backup or another model, evaluate the complete failure path rather than the normal app experience.

| Evaluation point | Questions to answer for the exact model |
|---|---|
| Entry fallback | Does it retain a physical key, keypad, fingerprint reader, interior turn control, or documented emergency power? |
| Local operation | Can Bluetooth or another local protocol unlock it without internet, and how close must the phone be? |
| Remote dependency | Does remote control require a powered hub, bridge, router, modem, and cloud service? |
| Battery management | What warning appears, which battery or power pack is specified, and what replacement procedure does the manufacturer require? |
| Installation compatibility | Will the existing deadbolt and cylinder still accept a key from outside, including emergency-and-hazard operation where needed? |
These questions matter more than a generic claim that a lock is “smart.” A model with no key cylinder and no documented external-power input has fewer recovery options than one with several independent methods. Conversely, a keyed lock is only a real fallback if the cylinder, key, and installation remain usable.
Manufacturer examples and their limits
| Manufacturer example | Documented behavior | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| SimpliSafe Smart Lock | The existing key can unlock the door after the smart lock dies. | Applies to its Smart Lock and a compatible installed deadbolt; support page updated June 26, 2026. |
| Xiaomi Automatic Smart Door Lock | Type-C emergency charging from a power bank; low-battery alert below 20%; about three weeks of theoretical operation at that warning point. | Manufacturer figures for that named lock, not an independent or cross-brand guarantee. |
| Wyze Lock | Key entry and Bluetooth lock or unlock remain available during Wi-Fi loss; Auto-Unlock does not trigger offline. | Support guidance updated May 18, 2026; local Bluetooth requires proximity. |
| Nuki smart lock | Internet control stops when power or Wi-Fi fails, while Bluetooth control nearby remains possible; the interior rotary knob remains usable with an empty battery. | Outside key operation depends on an emergency-and-hazard cylinder. |
| Kevo Plus | The gateway needs power and internet for remote access; local phone-and-Bluetooth control remains when either is unavailable. | Behavior describes the Kevo Plus architecture, not every gateway-based lock. |
| Applicable Lockly models | Some models accept temporary power from a 9V battery at exterior contacts and offer a physical key. | Only models with the documented contacts and key option support those methods. |
| Supported Tapo models | Some can be powered temporarily from a power bank after the battery dies. | Available unlocking methods differ by model. |
Common mistakes that lead to lockouts
- Confusing an offline app with a dead lock. First try a local method; an unreachable cloud service does not prove that the battery is empty.
- Assuming every USB-C port is an emergency input. Only the interface documented for the exact lock should be powered.
- Keeping the only key indoors. The mechanical fallback must be accessible from outside.
- Ignoring the cylinder. Some retrofit installations cannot operate from outside unless the cylinder supports emergency-and-hazard function.
- Treating one battery warning as universal. The 20% threshold and three-week estimate are Xiaomi’s guidance for one product; SimpliSafe’s multiple-week warning is a separate manufacturer claim.
- Relying on remote access during a router outage. A gateway, router, modem, and internet service can each break the remote path independently.
What is not known about smart-lock failure rates
Manufacturer support pages explain recovery procedures for named products, but they do not provide an independent, cross-brand statistic for smart-lock failure frequency or lockout rates. The practical conclusion is to plan for the specific failure modes your installation can experience instead of assigning a universal reliability percentage to all smart locks.
