When a manufacturer ends software support, the gadget usually does not stop working that day. It stops receiving future software updates under that support arrangement. What remains usable depends on the device: buttons and other local functions may continue, while features that need an app, account, internet connection, cloud service or integration may degrade or disappear. Security is the central concern, because newly discovered flaws may no longer be patched.
Check the model’s support terms, test each function you rely on, and then choose among continued low-risk local use, restricted network access, replacement, or recycling.
What “software support ended” actually means
A support-end notice normally means the manufacturer will no longer provide future firmware or operating-system updates for that product under the stated policy. It does not, by itself, prove that the device has been remotely disabled, that every feature has failed, or that the company has shut down its servers. The exact notice may distinguish among security updates, feature updates, app support and cloud-service availability.

Support can end in stages. A maker might stop feature development but continue security fixes for a time, stop firmware while leaving a mobile app available, or end all official updates at once. Unless the manufacturer’s policy says otherwise, do not infer a specific timetable or service shutdown from the phrase “end of support.”
What can keep working after updates stop?
Think of the gadget as several layers instead of one all-or-nothing product. A function that runs entirely on the device has a different outlook from one that depends on a company-controlled service.

The FTC gives a simple illustration: a smart bulb may still respond to its wall switch, while a smart speaker may lose access to a music service. That contrast is why a support date alone cannot tell you whether a gadget is still useful.

Security is the main long-term change
Firmware and operating-system updates can add protections and fix security bugs. Once updates stop, flaws discovered later may remain in the device. The exposure depends on the particular software, known vulnerabilities, how the gadget is configured and whether it can be reached from the internet; no universal risk score can be assigned from a support date alone. FTC advice for phones and home-security cameras explains why unpatched connected products deserve special caution: phone security guidance and camera security guidance.
An unsupported gadget is not automatically compromised. A device with no network connection and only simple local functions has a different attack surface from a camera exposed through remote access. Isolation can reduce opportunities for attack, but it is not a guarantee: other devices, removable media, local attackers or an accidental reconnection can still matter.
Why cloud dependence changes the risk
Cloud-connected products commonly exchange account credentials, telemetry, recordings or commands with a vendor’s servers. If the product no longer receives fixes, an attacker may target the device, its local network or the account that controls it. If the vendor later retires the cloud service, the security question and the usefulness question arrive together: remote commands, history, notifications or integrations may stop even though the hardware still powers on.

What an update deadline does not establish
The available FTC guidance does not establish a universal rule for warranty coverage, paid repairs, spare parts, customer-service access or compatibility with every future phone and operating system. Those terms vary by product, market and contract. Read the warranty and service documents for the exact model instead of assuming support termination cancels or preserves any particular consumer right.

- Identify the exact product. Record the model number, hardware revision, serial-number range, region and current firmware. A similarly named model can have a different policy.
- Search the manufacturer’s support and security pages. Look for phrases such as “software support,” “security updates,” “end of life,” “service period” and “minimum update period.” Save the page or notice and its publication date.
- Separate commitments. Note whether the date applies to firmware, the mobile app, cloud services, security fixes or all of them. A single date may not cover every layer.
- Ask the manufacturer when the page is unclear. Use phone, email or chat and ask for the final security-update date, whether local operation will remain supported, and whether cloud functions have a separate retirement date. Keep the response with your device records.
- Check your market. Update commitments, consumer protections and recycling options can differ by country or sales channel. Do not treat a policy for another region as your own guarantee.
Audit the functions you actually need
Make a short inventory before deciding whether to replace the gadget. Separate “must have” functions from conveniences and test each one under the conditions in which you use it.
- Local test: disconnect internet access, then operate the physical controls and any local automations.
- App test: open the companion app, change a setting, restart the device and verify that the setting remains.
- Account test: sign out and back in, confirm that password recovery and two-factor authentication work, and check whether a second household member can use the device.
- Cloud test: verify notifications, history, backups, voice control and integrations that depend on the vendor’s servers.
- Recovery test: find the reset procedure and determine whether the gadget can be set up again if the app or account is unavailable.
- Data test: export recordings, logs, configurations or other information you would need if the service disappeared.
Record the result as “works locally,” “needs app,” “needs cloud,” or “failed.” This prevents a single working button from disguising the loss of a feature you consider essential.

Security steps if you keep using it
Apply the remaining protections while updates are still offered, then reduce unnecessary exposure. The FTC’s home-device guidance is collected at Securing Your Internet-Connected Devices at Home.
- Install the last available firmware and app versions. Use the manufacturer’s official update path and confirm the installed version afterward.
- Replace default credentials. Set a long, unique device password. Do not reuse the password for email, banking or another device.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where offered. Protect the account that controls the gadget, not just the gadget itself.
- Disable features you do not use. Turn off remote administration, public sharing, unused integrations and other network-facing options when the product allows it.
- Limit network access where feasible. A separate network or firewall rule can restrict an older device, but verify that the local functions you need still work.
- Monitor for signs of failure. Unexpected reboots, unexplained traffic, repeated login alerts or changed settings warrant disconnecting the gadget and reviewing the account.
- Disconnect unused devices. The FTC specifically advises: “Disconnect older devices you no longer use from the network.” An idle, unpatched product can become a weak point even when nobody is operating it.
Keep, isolate or replace? A practical decision framework
Use the following questions in order. The goal is not to label every unsupported gadget unsafe; it is to match the device’s remaining value and exposure to your needs.

This is a practical synthesis of the FTC’s advice, not a standardized safety certification. If the gadget controls a lock, alarm, medical process, child-safety function or other high-consequence system, give current support and a fallback device more weight than convenience or sunk cost.

What the five-year figure does—and does not—mean
There is no general consumer statistic or universal support duration established for all gadgets. CISA’s Internet of Things Acquisition Guidance includes a sample procurement requirement for regular security patches for at least five years from the start of an organizational contract: CISA Internet of Things Acquisition Guidance (PDF). That is a contract example for organizational purchasing, not an industry average, legal consumer entitlement or promise that every product will receive five years of updates.
For organizations buying connected equipment, the related customer guidance from the Enduring Security Framework and CISA explains supply-chain questions to raise with vendors, including how updates are delivered and supported: Securing the Software Supply Chain: Customer Guide (August 2024). Consumers should still rely on the exact product policy rather than borrowing the sample procurement number.
Retiring the gadget safely
- Export what you need. Download recordings, photos, logs, settings and account data before a cloud service or app becomes unavailable.
- Remove the device from accounts. Revoke sharing, integrations, access tokens and remote users. Change any password that was reused elsewhere.
- Factory-reset it when possible. Follow the model-specific reset instructions and confirm that personal data and network credentials are gone.
- Erase removable storage. Handle memory cards, USB media and internal storage according to the manufacturer’s instructions; physically destroy storage only when appropriate for the sensitivity of the data.
- Check trade-in and recycling options. The maker may offer a program, but availability and eligibility depend on the product and location. If not, use an authorized electronics-recycling channel.
- Disconnect first. Until disposal, power the device down and remove it from your network rather than leaving an unsupported product online.
The bottom line for owners
End of software support is a change in maintenance, not an automatic off switch. Determine which features are local, which depend on an app or cloud service, and what data or internet exposure is involved. Install the final updates, secure the account, disable unnecessary access and disconnect devices you no longer use. Keep an unsupported gadget only when its remaining function and exposure fit your risk tolerance; otherwise replace it or retire it through a secure, locally available recycling or trade-in route.
