It does not keep flying on laser energy after the beam disappears. The receiver stops harvesting optical power, and the aircraft must draw on its onboard battery or another reserve. If that reserve can cover detection, recovery and landing, the flight controller can remain stable, shed loads, search for the beam or return to a safe line-of-sight area. If the reserve is too small, the drone can lose propulsion and crash.
The immediate answer: the drone falls back to stored energy
A laser-powered drone is better understood as a battery-powered aircraft with an external energy source. A ground transmitter aims a laser at a receiver on the unmanned aircraft. Photovoltaic or thermophotovoltaic cells convert the incoming light into electrical power. Power-conditioning electronics then route that power to the motors and avionics, or use it to charge a battery.
When the charging beam is interrupted, the receiver no longer supplies beam-derived energy. The aircraft does not become self-sustaining, and the laser cannot be “stored” in the air. A properly engineered system changes to its battery or reserve bus, reports the loss, and executes a programmed response. That response might be a short continuation, lower-power flight, beam reacquisition, return to a line-of-sight zone or an immediate landing.

How the laser power chain works
Ground transmitter and tracking
The ground station generates and directs the beam. Pointing and tracking equipment keeps the beam aligned with a moving receiver. A tracking interruption, an obstruction, a transmitter fault or a deliberate safety shutdown can remove the optical input even when the drone itself is mechanically healthy.
Receiver and power conditioning
The aircraft-mounted receiver focuses the beam onto photovoltaic cells. Thermophotovoltaic cells are another option, particularly for infrared power beaming. The receiver’s electrical output is not automatically identical to the drone’s motor power: converters, protection circuits and distribution hardware regulate voltage and divide energy among propulsion, flight computers, communications, sensors and battery charging.
DARPA’s Power Receiver And Delivery (PRAD) demonstration reported more than 800 watts delivered for 30 seconds across 8.6 kilometers (5.3 miles). That figure describes a measured transmission event, not a standard drone endurance rating or a guarantee that every receiver can produce 800 watts continuously.

Battery or reserve bus
A battery may be charged while the beam is present and supply power when the beam is absent. Some designs can blend beam power and battery power continuously; others use a managed transfer between sources. The transition can be nearly seamless if the power electronics maintain the required voltage, or it can trigger a low-energy fault if the reserve is disconnected, depleted or unable to meet a sudden motor demand.

The failure sequence when the beam cuts out
- Optical input is interrupted. A building, terrain, clouding or another object can occlude the path. Pointing error, tracking loss, transmitter shutdown and a laser-safety interlock have the same immediate effect: insufficient light reaches the receiver.
- Receiver output drops. Photovoltaic or thermophotovoltaic cells produce much less electricity once the beam is gone. They cannot continue delivering the previous beam-derived power merely because they were illuminated moments earlier.
- The power manager detects the change. Voltage, current, receiver telemetry and battery state-of-charge can be used to identify the loss. Detection latency matters: a fast detector gives the controller more reserve for recovery, while a delayed response consumes energy and altitude before the aircraft reacts.
- The reserve source takes over. The aircraft draws from its battery or reserve bus. In a well-designed system this is regulated so the flight controller, inertial sensors and motor controllers remain powered during the transition.
- The flight policy runs. Software may continue the current task for a limited interval, reduce payload and communications loads, attempt to reacquire the beam, fly toward a known line-of-sight area, return to a launch or recovery point, or land immediately.
- The reserve is either recovered or exhausted. If the aircraft reaches a safe landing condition before the reserve limit, beam loss is an emergency but not necessarily a crash. If the battery reaches its cutoff while the drone is airborne, thrust can fall below the level needed for controlled flight and an uncontrolled descent or impact can follow.
Why the beam may stop
Physical blockage and geometry
Laser power beaming requires a clear optical path. A tree, building, crane, terrain feature, dust event or another aircraft can block the beam. A small pointing error can also move the spot away from the receiver, especially at long range or when the drone is maneuvering rapidly. Unlike radio power transfer, a tightly focused optical beam generally cannot bend around an obstruction.
Tracking and sensing faults
The transmitter may lose the receiver’s position, the receiver may no longer provide a usable tracking signal, or vibration can push the spot outside the photovoltaic cells. Tracking software can intentionally stop transmission when confidence falls below a set threshold. Reacquisition then requires the aircraft and ground station to find one another without wasting the reserve.
Intentional safety shutdowns
Laser systems operate under eye-safety, human-exposure and airspace restrictions. A safety sensor can cut the beam when a person, aircraft or unauthorized object enters a protected zone. The Aerospace study published in 2026 treats pointing, sensing and control as dedicated subsystems partly because the optical link must be managed as a hazard, not merely as a power cable.
An APS hazard-analysis abstract likewise describes serious operator hazards, laser-hazard zones and personal protective equipment requirements. A beam that stops because a person entered the area may represent correct system behavior. The drone still needs enough reserve to land safely after that deliberate interruption.

Transmitter, receiver or thermal limits
Electrical faults, cooling problems and protective limits can stop transmission. A 2021 feasibility study by Ali Mohammadnia, Behrooz M. Ziapour, Hadi Ghaebi and Mohammad Hassan Khooban modeled net received power at 500 meters as 73.5 watts with gallium arsenide, 62.6 watts with cadmium telluride and 33.2 watts with crystalline silicon, while the laser module consumed about 600 watts. Those are modeled results under specified assumptions, not universal performance values. The study proposed two-phase cooling because receiver temperature can become a limiting factor.
What the drone should do after detecting beam loss
Keep flight-critical systems alive
The first priority is propulsion and stabilization. A power manager should reserve energy for the flight controller, inertial measurement unit, motor controllers, navigation and the communications link needed for recovery. Payload heaters, high-power cameras, transmitters and other nonessential loads can be disconnected or throttled.
Choose a recovery policy
The right policy depends on the mission and the available reserve. A drone over a clear landing site may land immediately. One with substantial reserve may move to a known line-of-sight corridor and attempt reacquisition. A system operating near an obstacle or at low altitude may favor a controlled landing over a long return flight.

|---|---|---|
| Large reserve, stable navigation and clear path | Reduce loads, maintain control and attempt beam reacquisition or return | Using reserve on a search that does not succeed |
| Moderate reserve with a known safe landing area | Abort the mission and land under battery power | Wind, payload or terrain increases landing energy |
| Low reserve or uncertain state-of-charge | Immediate controlled descent with nonessential loads shed | Insufficient energy to reach the preferred landing point |
| Reserve exhausted, failed transfer or faulty failsafe | Loss of thrust and uncontrolled descent | Impact and damage to people, property or the aircraft |
Do not assume reacquisition will succeed
Finding the beam again can be harder than detecting its loss. The drone may have drifted, the transmitter may be in a safety lockout, or the original path may remain blocked. A recovery algorithm should impose a time or energy limit on searching. Once that limit is reached, the aircraft should land rather than continue looking until the battery is empty.

How long can it fly after losing the beam?
No single crash time applies to all laser-powered drones. Remaining flight time is determined by usable battery energy, motor power, payload consumption, wind, altitude, aircraft mass, reserve policy and the efficiency of the power electronics. A multirotor hovering with a heavy payload can consume reserve much faster than a lightly loaded aircraft descending immediately.
A useful engineering estimate is:
available flight time ≈ usable reserve energy (watt-hours) ÷ emergency power demand (watts)
The result must be reduced for conversion losses, battery protection limits and the energy required to climb, translate, turn or fight wind. It is not safe to divide a demonstration’s beam-delivery figure by motor power and call the result an endurance number. PRAD’s more-than-800-watt, 30-second transmission shows what that test delivered across 8.6 kilometers; it does not state how long a particular aircraft can remain airborne after a later interruption.
Designers therefore set an energy reserve for detection, decision-making and a controlled landing, rather than relying on a nominal battery percentage. State-of-charge estimates also have uncertainty, especially under high current where voltage can sag before the battery is chemically empty.

Design features that determine the outcome
| Design axis | What to examine | Why it matters after beam loss |
|---|---|---|
| Battery reserve | Usable watt-hours held back for emergencies, not just the displayed percentage | Determines whether the drone can stabilize, search, return and land |
| Receiver and power conditioning | Photovoltaic or thermophotovoltaic architecture, converter efficiency and source-transfer behavior | Controls how smoothly the battery takes over and how much energy is available to motors |
| Beam tracking | Pointing accuracy, tracking update rate and reacquisition method | Determines whether the aircraft can restore the external supply before reserve is spent |
| Loss-of-beam detection | Voltage/current sensing and decision latency | Earlier detection leaves more energy and altitude for recovery |
| Landing and recovery policy | Immediate land, return, safe-zone flight or bounded search | A policy matched to the terrain prevents a low battery from becoming an uncontrolled descent |
| Payload demand | Camera, communications, compute and other loads that can be shed | Reducing nonessential demand extends the reserve during the emergency |
| Cooling margin | Receiver and laser thermal limits under continuous operation | Over-temperature protection can interrupt the beam even when tracking is good |
| Safety interlocks | Eye-safety sensors, exposure limits, airspace rules and protected zones | Intentional shutdowns must be included in the energy budget and flight plan |
Operational and safety implications
Plan for a beam interruption before takeoff
- Verify the reserve is sufficient for detection, a defined recovery attempt and a controlled landing.
- Set a minimum energy threshold below which the system cannot begin a beam-search maneuver.
- Map safe landing areas and line-of-sight corridors before launch.
- Confirm that the transmitter’s interlocks, exclusion zones and warning systems are active.
- Test the source-transfer behavior at a safe altitude and with the intended payload before an operational mission.
Use a bounded response in flight
- Announce beam loss and record the receiver, battery and tracking status.
- Shed nonessential payload and communications loads if the aircraft’s policy allows it.
- Maintain stable flight while checking whether the transmitter is in a temporary safety or tracking lockout.
- Attempt reacquisition only within the preplanned time and energy budget.
- Abort the search and land when the reserve threshold or recovery timer is reached.
These steps are system-design principles, not a substitute for the aircraft manufacturer’s flight manual or local laser and aviation rules. The beam can be more hazardous than the drone’s ordinary electrical system, so operators need both aircraft emergency procedures and laser-safety procedures.
What current demonstrations show—and what they do not
Most public evidence concerns custom defense or research systems rather than standardized consumer aircraft. DARPA’s POWER program described a future network of airborne optical relays and is listed as complete. Its PRAD work demonstrated high-power delivery over kilometers, but a demonstration of power transfer is not proof of a retail drone with an unlimited hover time.
A 2024 DARPA Small Business Innovation Research award describes eye-safe infrared power beaming to quadcopters using a thermophotovoltaic cell. A 2025 Army Small Business Technology Transfer award describes a custom photovoltaic receiver integrated with small-uncrewed-aircraft power electronics and a ground transmitter operating from hundreds of meters. These records describe development and integration work, not a common interface or universal failsafe.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →On June 17, 2026, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory reported a dual-use laser that could transmit power and rapidly transition to a counter-uncrewed-aircraft mission. NRL said, “We demonstrated that the same laser used to beam power remotely can immediately transition to counter a drone threat, giving Marines and soldiers greater flexibility without changing their operational footprint.” That report highlights how one laser installation may have multiple mission states; it does not establish a consumer product’s behavior after beam loss.
Bottom line for pilots and bystanders
A laser-powered drone will not hover indefinitely when its charging beam disappears. The receiver loses the external input, the battery or reserve must carry the aircraft, and the flight controller should reduce loads and land or recover before that reserve is exhausted. Beam loss may be accidental, technical or an intentional response to eye-safety and airspace hazards. Whether the aircraft makes a controlled landing or crashes is ultimately a question of reserve energy, detection speed, tracking quality, cooling and the quality of its failsafe design.
