Usually, the next quarterback on the depth chart gets the first chance to take over. Who actually plays—and how the team responds—depends on the roster, the replacement’s preparation and the circumstances of the injury or absence. Coaches may lean on familiar plays or tailor the plan to the new quarterback, but there is no single NCAA-mandated “backup offense.” Losing a starter can be a major setback; it does not, by itself, decide a team’s season.
Who replaces the starting quarterback?
The backup listed next on the depth chart is the usual first option, but a depth chart is not an automatic rule about who must play. Coaches weigh the available quarterbacks, their preparation and the situation. A team may turn to a different player if the listed backup is unavailable or another quarterback is better prepared for the role.
The transition can be difficult when a backup has had few game repetitions. A January 1, 2025 Washington Post report on Georgia’s Gunner Stockton preparing to replace injured starter Carson Beck in the Sugar Bowl described the challenge of learning behind an established starter while waiting for game opportunities. It is an example of one team’s situation, not evidence that every backup is inexperienced.

How might coaches adjust the game plan?
Coaches can build the plan around what the replacement knows and does well. They may rely more on plays the quarterback has practiced, limit unfamiliar decisions, or use skills such as mobility when the offense and personnel can support them. These are possible adjustments, not a standard formula followed by every team. The opponent, blocking and available playmakers also affect what is practical.

What to consider when comparing replacement options
- Game experience: Has the player handled meaningful snaps, and how did the team prepare him for this role?
- Offense familiarity: How well does he know the calls, reads and timing the team intends to use?
- Fit with teammates: Which plays work with the available blockers and playmakers?
- Usable strengths: Can the plan make use of his decision-making, mobility or other skills?
- Preparation time: How much practice time is available before the next game?
These are practical questions, not a ranking system that predicts which quarterback will succeed. The amount of preparation and the opponent matter alongside a player’s prior experience.
Does losing the starter mean the season is over?
No. The starter’s absence can make winning harder, but it does not establish the outcome of a game or end a season automatically. The replacement’s readiness, the rest of the roster, preparation and opponent all matter. The available evidence does not establish a general win-loss penalty or a reliable percentage for how much a team’s performance changes after losing its starter, so a precise prediction would be unsupported.

Why can quarterback depth be difficult to maintain?
Backups need playing opportunities to develop, but established starters can limit those chances. Player movement and competition for playing time can also make it harder for a team to keep experienced depth. In a January 1, 2025 Washington Post report, Notre Dame quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli said, “Guys just get impatient, and it becomes a trend, the thing to do.” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart described the position as “probably the most transient position” in college football.

A separate CBS Sports report found that at least 62.7% of Power Four Week 1 starters had transferred at some point in their careers in 2025. That figure describes those starters’ transfer histories; it does not measure backup readiness or show that transfers caused a particular team to lack depth.

What injury and availability rules apply?
Rules depend on the season and competition. An injury stoppage rule affects how a timeout or penalty is handled; it does not determine which quarterback replaces an injured player or how coaches call the game.
NCAA injury-timeout change for 2025–26
Beginning with the 2025–26 season, if a player presents as injured after the ball is spotted for the next play, the player’s team is charged a timeout. If it has none remaining, the team receives a five-yard delay-of-game penalty. The NCAA announced the change on April 16, 2025. Consult the NCAA announcement and the NCAA football playing-rules page for current-season details.

Public availability reports for the 2025–26 CFP
For the 2025–26 College Football Playoff, participating schools must submit public player-availability reports three days before each game, update them daily and issue a final report 90 minutes before kickoff. Before game day, the listed designations are “available,” “probable,” “questionable,” “doubtful” and “out”; on game day, they are “available,” “game time decision” or “out.” This policy applies to CFP games in that season, not necessarily to every regular-season game. See the CFP availability-reporting policy.
