At maturity, a bond reaches its scheduled end date: the issuer repays the principal required by the security’s terms, and the bond stops accruing interest. If a callable bond is called before that date, the issuer redeems all or part of it at the applicable call price. Coupons on the redeemed amount end when the call takes effect, so the investor may have to reinvest sooner—possibly at a lower rate.
The exact payment date, call price, notice period, treatment of accrued interest, and whether only part of a position can be redeemed are controlled by the bond’s documents, the issuer and, for account processing, the broker or custodian. A call is also different from an investor choosing to sell a bond before maturity.
What redemption at maturity means
Maturity is the stated end date in a bond’s terms. TreasuryDirect defines the maturity date for Treasury marketable securities as the date when the face value—or inflation-adjusted principal—is paid to the investor and the security stops earning interest. That definition is specific to Treasury securities, although other bonds also use their governing documents to establish a maturity date and repayment obligation.
“This is the date on which the face value, or inflation-adjusted principal, of a security is paid to the investor. The security also stops earning interest on this date.” — TreasuryDirect, Glossary for Treasury Marketable Securities

Redemption is the repayment event. TreasuryDirect describes redemption as payment of principal and accrued interest at maturity, or, where the security permits it, payment when the owner redeems before maturity. The exact cash-flow mechanics differ among Treasury, corporate, municipal and other bonds.
What you normally receive
- Principal: the amount specified for repayment under the security’s terms. It may be face value, or an inflation-adjusted amount for an instrument that provides that feature.
- Interest due under the instrument: the final coupon or other interest amount is paid according to the bond’s schedule and terms. Interest accrual ends at maturity.
- Account credit: a broker, bank or Treasury account credits the proceeds according to its processing schedule. The date you see the money can therefore depend on the security and account arrangement.
Repayment is not necessarily the same as getting back exactly what you paid. If you bought a bond above or below its face amount, the contractual principal paid at maturity can be higher or lower than your purchase price. Your total result also includes coupons received, transaction costs and any tax consequences that apply to your situation.
Is maturity automatic?
The issuer’s obligation to repay at the stated maturity date is set by the bond contract; an investor generally does not submit a sell order to make an ordinary maturity occur. Operational details are not universal, however. Check the account statement and the issuer or broker’s maturity notice for the expected settlement and cash-availability date.
What an early call does
A call is an issuer’s contractual right to redeem a bond before its stated maturity. When the issuer exercises that right, it pays the call price specified in the bond’s call provision for the amount being called. The redeemed portion no longer remains outstanding, and future coupons on that portion stop after the call becomes effective.

Why issuers call bonds
Issuers commonly consider calls when market interest rates have fallen. Refinancing an older bond at a lower rate can reduce the issuer’s borrowing cost. A falling-rate environment does not guarantee that a call will occur: the issuer must have a call right, the relevant date must have arrived, and the issuer must choose to exercise the provision.
Why a call can hurt an investor’s plan
The investor loses the expected coupon stream earlier than planned. If prevailing rates have declined, comparable replacement investments may provide less income. This is called reinvestment risk. A call can also limit potential price appreciation: as a likely call date approaches, a bond’s market price may be constrained near the amount the issuer would pay under the call provision instead of rising as much as a similar noncallable bond.
The call price is not automatically the amount you paid. An investor who bought at a premium, for example, can receive less under the call terms than the purchase price. The security’s official terms determine the call price or formula, treatment of accrued interest and any premium. There is no universal call price or universal notice period.

| Feature | Redemption at maturity | Early call |
|---|---|---|
| Date | The stated maturity date in the security terms. | A date permitted by the call provision, chosen by the issuer when it exercises the right. |
| Who initiates the event? | Repayment occurs under the bond’s scheduled terms. | The issuer elects to redeem before maturity. |
| Principal payment | The principal amount required by the security terms is paid. | The applicable call price is paid for the amount called. |
| Later interest | Interest accrual ends at maturity; coupon timing depends on the instrument. | Future coupons on the redeemed amount stop when the call takes effect. |
| Main investor issue | Confirm the promised repayment and decide how to use the proceeds. | Prepare for an earlier loss of income and possible reinvestment at lower rates. |
| Can only part of a position be affected? | Usually the maturity event covers the outstanding security, subject to its terms. | Some issues permit partial calls; the documents and notice determine the process. |
This table describes the general distinction. It does not establish a standard call premium, notice period, payment date or partial-redemption method for every bond.

What happens step by step at maturity
- Confirm the date and amount. Locate the stated maturity date, principal amount and any inflation-adjustment language in the offering document or account record.
- Receive the final scheduled interest. Verify the coupon schedule and the date through which interest is payable. Some instruments make payments on a schedule that does not coincide exactly with the date the account displays the proceeds.
- Receive principal under the terms. The issuer or its paying agent sends the required principal to the account arrangement specified for the bond.
- Check the statement. Look for a maturity or redemption entry, the principal credited, the final interest entry and any withholding or fees shown by the account provider.
- Decide what to do with the cash. A maturing bond does not automatically renew into an equivalent investment unless a separate account instruction says so. Compare available choices and their risks before reinvesting.
What happens step by step after an issuer calls a bond
- Read the call notice. The notice should identify the issuer, the effective redemption date, the amount called, the call price or calculation and instructions supplied through the broker or custodian.
- Compare the notice with the bond documents. Check that the date is permitted, that the call price matches the schedule or formula and that any partial-call allocation is explained.
- Continue monitoring interest only through the effective date. Do not assume coupons continue to the original maturity date. Future payments on the called amount stop when the call takes effect, subject to the instrument’s stated payment mechanics.
- Receive the call proceeds. The account credits the applicable call price for the amount redeemed. The timing of the credit and the treatment of accrued interest depend on the security and account arrangement.
- Reassess income and risk. Recalculate how much income the remaining portfolio produces and whether replacement investments fit your time horizon, credit tolerance, liquidity needs and tax situation.
Terms to check before buying or holding a callable bond
FINRA’s bond-investing guidance identifies maturity, yield, call status, tax treatment, credit rating and other security-specific features as due-diligence factors. Review these items before assuming a coupon will last until maturity:
- First call date and call schedule: the earliest date and subsequent dates on which the issuer may redeem.
- Call price or formula: the amount payable at each permitted call date, including any stated premium.
- Optional versus mandatory redemption: whether the issuer has discretion or must redeem after a specified event.
- Partial-call rules: whether the issuer may call less than the entire issue or your position, and how allocations are made.
- Notice requirements: how and when the issuer must notify holders, and how your broker delivers that notice.
- Coupon schedule: payment dates and the rule determining the final interest amount.
- Yield measures: yield to maturity, yield to call and, when provided, yield to worst.
- Credit and tax information: the issuer’s credit profile, tax treatment and any jurisdiction-specific reporting obligations.
FINRA’s “Just the Facts…Bond Facts” materials are intended to help investors find information such as maturity, yield, credit rating and call status. Those summaries do not replace the official offering documents or a specific call notice.
How to interpret yield when a call is possible
Yield to maturity assumes the bond remains outstanding until its stated maturity under the assumptions used in the calculation. Yield to call instead uses a specified call date and call price. If several call dates or other redemption scenarios exist, yield to worst identifies the lowest relevant yield among the stated assumptions, subject to the calculation’s conventions.

Illustrative examples
Scheduled maturity
Suppose an investor owns a bond with a $1,000 principal amount and a stated maturity in June. The investor receives the final interest due under the coupon schedule, then the issuer repays the $1,000 principal required by the terms. If the investor paid $1,030 for the bond, the contractual principal repayment is still based on the bond’s terms rather than the investor’s purchase price; the investor’s overall result also reflects the coupons already received.
Early call at a premium
Suppose the same issue can be called at 102% of face value and the issuer calls the $1,000 amount. The call price would be calculated under that provision, but the investor should verify the document’s exact formula and any accrued-interest treatment. If the investor paid more than the call proceeds, the difference is not erased by the coupon; it is part of the investor’s total return calculation.
Partial call
If the terms permit a partial call, an investor holding several units might have only some units redeemed. The account notice should show the amount selected and the remaining principal. The uncalled portion keeps its own coupon and maturity terms, subject to later calls or other events.

Special Treasury consideration
TreasuryDirect states that only certain Treasury bonds issued before 1985 are subject to calls. When one of those Treasury bonds is called, TreasuryDirect states the date on which interest will stop. This historical Treasury rule should not be generalized to corporate or municipal bonds, whose call provisions are governed by their own documents.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing a call with selling
An investor can place a sell order before maturity, but that is a market transaction at the available price. A call is the issuer exercising a contractual redemption right. The price, timing and tax reporting can therefore be different.
Assuming the coupon runs to maturity
For a callable bond, verify the first call date and schedule. Once the issuer calls an amount, future coupons on that amount do not continue to the original maturity date.
Assuming a call is guaranteed when rates fall
Lower rates may create an economic incentive to refinance, but the issuer may not call. Contractual restrictions, financing conditions and issuer decisions still control.

Call proceeds are determined by the call provision, not by what you paid. Record the purchase price and compare it with each possible redemption amount when assessing return.
Relying on a summary instead of the governing terms
Account screens and bond-fact summaries are useful starting points. For a disputed amount or unexpected date, consult the offering document, supplemental terms, call notice and account statement.
Questions the documents may not answer universally
Payment timing, accrued-interest treatment, partial-call allocation, notice periods and taxes vary by security, issuer, broker, account and jurisdiction. FINRA recommends considering tax treatment and call status as part of bond due diligence, but those general factors cannot determine an individual tax result or settle every payment detail. For a specific holding, use the official documents and notice, then obtain advice from the broker, issuer’s paying agent or a qualified tax professional when necessary.
