A partial fill means only part of your Bitcoin limit-sell order has traded. The executed portion is complete, while the unfilled quantity either remains active on the order book or is canceled, depending on the order’s time-in-force and the exchange’s rules. Check the order status and remaining quantity before submitting another sell, because placing a second order can unintentionally sell more BTC than you own.
What a partial fill actually means
Suppose you place a limit order to sell 1 BTC and the exchange reports that 0.4 BTC filled. The 0.4 BTC has already been sold at the order’s execution price or at a better price under the venue’s rules. The other 0.6 BTC has not been sold. It is a separate, unexecuted remainder whose treatment depends on the order settings.
On Coinbase, a partial-fill status means only part of the requested quantity executed; the remaining quantity stays active as an open order until the selected time-in-force expires or you cancel it. Coinbase describes this state in its order-cancellation guidance. Other exchanges can cancel, expire, or continue the remainder differently, so the status shown in your own trading interface is the controlling information.

A partial fill is not a failed trade. It is a completed trade for one quantity and a still-pending instruction for another. The filled amount should appear in your trade or fill history, while the remaining amount should appear in the open-order view if it is still working.

Why Bitcoin reaching your limit price does not guarantee a full fill
A sell limit price is a boundary, not a promise that the entire order will execute. Coinbase’s trading rules state that a limit order executes at the chosen price or better. That condition makes an order eligible; it does not create enough buyers to take every coin in your request.
For a sell order, buyers must be willing to purchase at your limit price or higher. If only 0.4 BTC of matching buy interest is available when the market reaches that level, only 0.4 BTC can execute at that moment. The remaining 0.6 BTC continues to wait if your order is still active.
- Available quantity: The order book may contain fewer matching bids than the amount you want to sell.
- Price movement: Bitcoin can touch your price briefly and move away before enough counterparties arrive.
- Queue priority: Other orders at the same price may be ahead of yours and consume available bids first.
- Order constraints: Minimum sizes, tick sizes, and the chosen time-in-force can affect what remains executable.
Therefore, a chart candle or a displayed last-traded price touching your limit does not prove that your order had access to enough matching liquidity. Price eligibility and available counterparties are separate conditions.
What happens to the unfilled remainder
The time-in-force instruction determines how long the exchange should keep trying to execute the order. Names and exact behavior are venue-specific, but the common choices are:

If you did not deliberately choose a setting, check the order ticket and order details rather than assuming GTC. A default can differ between spot markets, advanced interfaces, mobile apps, and exchanges.
How to verify what has happened
Use the order-detail screen, not just the portfolio balance or a price chart. The labels vary, but you should identify five values:
- Original size: The BTC quantity you submitted.
- Filled size: The quantity already traded.
- Remaining size: Original size minus filled size, adjusted for any fee or venue-specific quantity display.
- Status: For example, open, partially filled, filled, canceled, or expired.
- Time-in-force and price: These explain whether the remainder can continue working and at what boundary.
Coinbase’s order-management help says its order view shows size, percentage filled, fee, and status, and provides controls for canceling an unfilled remainder. Your exchange may use different labels, but the same distinction—executed quantity versus working quantity—is essential.

The order’s average execution price may therefore differ from the limit price, while every execution still satisfies the venue’s price rule.

What you can do with a still-open remainder
Leave it open
Keeping a GTC or GTD remainder open allows it to execute if buyers return at your limit price before expiration. This is appropriate when your price and timing are still valid. Remember that the unsold BTC remains exposed to market changes: the market can move far below your limit without triggering the order, or it can return later and execute the remainder when you are no longer watching.
Cancel the remainder
Canceling stops new executions for the unfilled quantity. The already filled portion cannot be undone by canceling the order; cancellation applies only to what is still working. Confirm that the status changes to canceled and that the remaining quantity is no longer shown as open.
Cancel and submit a new price
If market conditions changed, you can cancel the remainder and create a new limit order. Recheck the original order first so you do not leave it active while submitting another one. Two open sell orders can both execute, producing a larger total sale than intended.
Use an immediate order only after considering slippage
An order designed to execute immediately can obtain a different price for each fill and may consume several levels of the order book. It may also execute less than the requested amount if its rules allow cancellation of the remainder. Choose that behavior only when execution certainty matters more than price control, and read the venue’s confirmation screen carefully.

What happens to your BTC balance and reserved funds
When an order remains open, exchanges commonly reserve the quantity committed to it so that the same BTC cannot be sold twice. Coinbase’s order-management documentation explains that funds reserved for an open order are held until execution or cancellation. The exact display may show “available,” “in orders,” or another label.
After a partial fill, the executed BTC is no longer available to sell because it has traded. The unfilled portion may remain reserved while the order is open. If your available balance looks lower than expected, compare it with the order’s remaining quantity before transferring funds or placing another sell. Do not assume that a balance refresh means the order was canceled.
Release timing and rounding can vary. A small residual amount may be below a market’s minimum order size or may be displayed with fewer decimal places than the underlying ledger. If the interface shows a nonzero remainder that cannot be canceled or reused, consult that venue’s minimum-size and asset-precision rules rather than repeatedly submitting new orders.

Fees apply to executed trades according to the exchange’s fee schedule and account tier; a canceled, never-executed remainder is not itself a completed trade. However, there is no single cross-exchange rule for how partial-fill fees are displayed, which asset is debited, or whether each execution is listed separately.

Coinbase displays a fee in its order details, but the cited documentation does not establish a universal policy for every exchange. Open the fill history and fee detail for the specific order, then compare the result with the applicable fee schedule. Keep the execution records if you need accurate accounting, because one order can produce multiple fills with different prices, timestamps, and fee amounts.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming “price reached” means “order filled”: Verify filled and remaining quantities; a chart high is not proof of sufficient matching bids.
- Submitting another full-size sell: Subtract the filled amount and inspect open orders first. Otherwise, the original remainder and the new order could both execute.
- Canceling the wrong order: Match the order ID, pair, side, and price before confirming cancellation.
- Ignoring time-in-force: An IOC remainder may already be gone, while a GTC remainder can remain active for an extended period.
- Looking only at the wallet balance: A reserved amount can be hidden from the immediately available balance while the order is open.
- Expecting one fee rule everywhere: Inspect the venue’s fill and fee records instead of applying assumptions from another exchange.
Worked examples
GTC order that remains open
You submit a GTC limit sell for 1 BTC at $60,000. Buyers take 0.4 BTC at eligible prices. The order record shows 40% filled and 0.6 BTC remaining. Unless you cancel it or it expires under the venue’s rules, that 0.6 BTC continues to rest at the specified limit. A later wave of buyers can fill it, potentially in several executions.
IOC order with an immediate remainder canceled
You submit an IOC sell for 1 BTC at the same price, but only 0.4 BTC can match immediately. The 0.4 BTC executes and the other 0.6 BTC is canceled. There is no open order to fill later, so a subsequent sell would be a new instruction.
FOK order that does not complete
You submit a FOK sell for 1 BTC, but the order book cannot provide 1 BTC at the required price immediately. The order is canceled rather than partially executed. This behavior is the purpose of FOK, although the exchange’s exact implementation and availability must be confirmed in its rules.
A safe checklist before placing another Bitcoin sell
- Open the original order and record its order ID, pair, side, and limit price.
- Confirm the filled quantity in the fill history, not just the percentage shown on a summary screen.
- Confirm the remaining quantity and whether the status is open, canceled, expired, or filled.
- Read the time-in-force to determine whether an unfilled remainder can still execute.
- Decide whether to leave, cancel, or replace the remainder based on your intended total sale.
- Check the available BTC balance after reserved funds are accounted for.
- If you create a replacement order, enter only the quantity you still intend to sell and review the final confirmation.
How exchanges differ
There is no universal Bitcoin order-handling rule. Coinbase documents partial fills, order-detail fields, cancellation, and GTC/IOC/FOK behavior in the links above. Kraken’s published rules demonstrate that another venue can expose a different set of time-in-force options, including good-till-date. Before trading, read the rules for the exact exchange, market, and interface you are using.
The most useful questions to answer are: Does a partial remainder stay open? Which time-in-force choices are available? Where are filled and remaining quantities displayed? How are fees itemized? When are reserved funds released after cancellation? The answers determine what your particular order will do—not the fact that the asset is Bitcoin.
Bottom line
A partially filled Bitcoin limit sell has two outcomes at once: the filled BTC is already sold, and the remainder follows the order’s time-in-force. A GTC or GTD remainder can continue waiting, while IOC cancels what could not execute immediately and FOK requires complete immediate execution. Check the order details, reserved balance, and fee record before taking further action, and never submit another sell until you know exactly how much of the original order is still active.
