Replacing Alexa or Google Assistant does not move your smart home as one package. Devices, routines, linked accounts, speakers, cameras and household permissions are separate migration tasks. Matter-enabled products can often be shared with another certified platform, while other products must be connected again through the manufacturer’s app, a bridge or a cloud integration. Plan to check every device and rebuild or verify every automation before removing the old assistant.

What changes when you switch assistants

A voice assistant is only one layer of a smart home. The same light may be connected through Matter, a manufacturer’s cloud service, a hub using Zigbee or Thread, or a platform-specific integration. Your routines and media features are stored separately from those device connections. Because there is no documented universal Alexa-to-Google Home or Google Home-to-Alexa export, a replacement is a controlled migration rather than a single import.

Devices do not all move together

A device that works with one assistant may have no equivalent integration in the other. Even when both platforms list the same model, support can differ by function: basic on/off control may work while energy reporting, color effects, camera feeds, intercom, announcements or firmware tools do not. Confirm the exact model and the functions you use, not just the product family or a “works with” logo.

Automations are a separate project

Routines, scenes and schedules belong to the platform where you created them. The official setup material for both ecosystems describes creating and managing automations inside that ecosystem, not transferring them between assistants. Treat every trigger, condition and action as something to inspect and recreate.

Voice and media features are especially platform-dependent

Speaker groups, whole-home announcements, music-service accounts, camera voice commands and household voice profiles may remain tied to the old platform. A shared Matter light does not automatically bring over its room name, speaker group membership or announcement behavior. Test these features independently after the device itself responds.

Classify each device before you move it

Make a spreadsheet or written list with the device name, room, manufacturer, model, current connection method, controlling account and the features your household relies on. The connection method determines the likely migration path.

Connection path Likely migration method What to verify
Matter-certified device Share it to another certified app with Matter Multi-Admin, when the receiving platform supports that device type Device category, compatible hub for each platform, pairing code or QR code, and IPv6 on the home network where required
Manufacturer cloud integration Install or open the maker’s app, then authorize the target assistant’s integration Exact model support, account credentials, permissions and which features the integration exposes
Bridge or hub device Keep the bridge and reconnect its supported devices to the target platform Bridge compatibility, radio support and whether names, rooms and scenes are retained
Wi-Fi, Thread or Zigbee device without Matter sharing Use the manufacturer app, a compatible hub or a new target-platform integration Network band, hub requirement, local-versus-cloud behavior and reset instructions
Platform-specific speaker, camera or media feature Set up the feature again in the target ecosystem Service account, household access, voice commands, groups and recording or announcement settings

How Matter sharing works

Matter’s Multi-Admin feature allows a Matter-enabled device to be controlled from multiple Matter-certified apps. Google Home and Nest Help describes it as using Matter devices “simultaneously in different Matter-certified apps like Google Home, Apple Homekit, Amazon Alexa, and more.” Sharing is not the same as creating two independent copies: the physical device has one state, and that state is updated across the linked platforms. Only one platform can actively control the device at a given moment.

Support is conditional

Certified apps add Matter device categories on different schedules. Google’s compatibility information says support continues expanding, while its live page checked in 2026 claims more than 80,000 compatible Works with Google Home devices. That figure is an ecosystem scale claim from Google, not an independent migration measurement and not proof that every listed product or feature will transfer. Amazon publishes its own supported Matter categories, including smart plugs, but category support does not guarantee identical feature coverage for every model.

Every participating platform needs a hub

Google’s Multi-Admin instructions require a Matter hub compatible with each platform involved. The hub may be a supported speaker, display, router or another controller, but check the current requirements before buying hardware. Google also identifies IPv6 support as a network requirement for Matter. A setup can appear to finish and then fail during control if IPv6 is unavailable or blocked.

Typical sharing flow

  1. Open the existing platform’s device settings and choose its Matter sharing or Multi-Admin option.
  2. Generate the temporary pairing code or display the QR code supplied by that app.
  3. Open the receiving platform’s app, choose to add a Matter device and scan or enter the code.
  4. Select the destination home and room, then wait for the receiving app to finish commissioning.
  5. Confirm that commands and state changes work from both apps before changing names or deleting the old connection.

Labels and menu names can change between app versions. Follow the current instructions in the app and the device maker’s documentation. If a move flow tells you to factory-reset the device, use the model-specific reset procedure; do not reset every Matter product as a first step.

A safe migration plan

1. Build the inventory

Record lights, plugs, thermostats, locks, sensors, cameras, appliances, speakers, displays and hubs. Add room names, device names, model numbers, manufacturer apps, linked accounts, routines, schedules, scenes, voice commands and the household members who use them. Mark safety-critical items such as locks, alarms, smoke detectors, heating controls and water shutoff valves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Identify the actual connection

Open the manufacturer’s app and the current assistant’s device details. Look for Matter, a bridge, Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee or a cloud account. Do not infer the protocol from the product name. Keep login details, two-factor authentication devices and pairing codes available before starting.

3. Check the target platform first

Search the target platform’s current compatibility list for the exact model and device category. Confirm whether it supports the function you need, rather than only detecting the product. For Matter products, verify that the target app supports that category now and that its hub supports the relevant radio or network path.

4. Prepare the network and hubs

Update the target app and hub firmware, keep the phone on the home network, and confirm that the network permits local discovery and IPv6 where Matter requires it. Avoid changing Wi-Fi names or passwords during the migration. If the target platform uses a different hub, install and configure it before pairing devices.

5. Add or share devices in small batches

Start with a low-risk plug or lamp. Share supported Matter products through Multi-Admin; reconnect other products through the maker’s integration. Assign each device to its correct room and give it a distinct name. Test control from the target app before moving to the next room. This makes a failed pairing easier to isolate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Recreate automations deliberately

For each old routine, write down its trigger, time or presence condition, additional conditions, actions, delays, device names and linked services. Rebuild it in the target platform, then test both the normal case and an interruption case. Check schedules around daylight-saving changes and verify that a renamed device did not leave an action pointing to the old entry.

7. Validate household access and voice behavior

Invite household members to the new home, assign the needed permissions and test control from their phones. Speak the commands people actually use. Check speaker groups, announcements, music accounts, camera viewing, door-lock confirmation and any child or guest restrictions separately from ordinary light control.

8. Keep the old setup until the new one is proven

Leave the old assistant, integrations and routines available while critical functions are tested over several normal use cycles. Remove old account links or reset devices only after the replacement works and you have checked the manufacturer’s removal guidance. For a Matter device that will no longer be used in the old home, follow the app’s documented removal and reset flow.

What can stay and what may need rebuilding

Matter devices

These have the clearest cross-platform path when the category is supported. Sharing can preserve the same physical device for both apps, but room assignments, names, scenes and automations are platform data and may need to be recreated. A hub is required for each participating platform.

Works with Google Home or Works with Alexa products

Reconnect these through the manufacturer’s supported integration and check the target platform’s current listing. Support in one ecosystem does not establish support in the other. Cloud integrations may require the maker account to remain linked, while local integrations can have different discovery and remote-access behavior.

Bridges and non-Matter radios

A bridge can be the real controller even when the assistant displays individual bulbs or sensors. Keep the bridge online, verify its target-platform integration and check whether its scenes are exposed. If the bridge is unsupported, replacing every attached device may be unnecessary; a compatible bridge can be the smaller change, provided the target platform supports it.

Locks, cameras and safety devices

Prioritize these after basic lighting tests but before deleting the old system. Confirm lock status, secure-lock commands, camera live view, notifications, alarm states and emergency routines from the target app. A device that appears in the app but lacks its critical status or notification feature is not fully migrated.

Troubleshooting common failures

The target app cannot find the device

  • Confirm that the exact model and category are supported.
  • Check that the phone and hub are on the intended network and that IPv6 is available for Matter.
  • Bring the device close to the hub or router and retry discovery.
  • For a cloud integration, sign out and back in to the manufacturer account and re-authorize permissions.
  • Only then consider the maker’s reset process.

Pairing succeeds but control later fails

This commonly indicates a network or hub problem rather than a completed migration. Check IPv6, hub connectivity, Thread or Wi-Fi coverage and whether remote control depends on an internet service. Test local control at home and remote control separately.

The device works but a routine does not

Open the automation and inspect every trigger, condition and action. Re-select devices that were renamed or assigned to a different room. Verify linked service authorization and test the routine manually, then under its real trigger. Do not assume that a scene or delay from the old platform has an equivalent action in the new one.

A Matter device is duplicated or missing from one app

Check which home and account each app is using, then review the Multi-Admin list. State synchronization does not guarantee identical room structures or names. Remove a stale share only through the app’s current Matter controls, and reset the device only when the manufacturer’s instructions require it.

How to choose the replacement platform

Decision area Questions to answer
Device coverage Does it support the exact model, device category and advanced functions?
Connection path Will the product use Matter, a local protocol, a maker cloud integration or a bridge?
Hub requirements Is a compatible hub required, and does it support the product’s radio or protocol?
Automation depth Are the needed triggers, conditions, schedules, delays and actions available?
Household fit Can every resident use the phone app, voice controls and shared-home permissions?
Network behavior What works locally, and what requires an internet or cloud connection for remote operation?

Use these questions before purchasing replacements. A Matter-certified smart plug can be a sensible replacement for an older unsupported plug, but verify the certification mark, exact device type, target-app support and required hub first. Buying hardware before checking those four items can reproduce the same compatibility problem.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show

Official platform documentation establishes device integrations, Matter sharing and platform-specific automation controls. It does not establish a universal routine-import tool, an exhaustive model-by-model migration matrix or equal feature support between Alexa and Google Home. No published success rate for switching between them is established, so any percentage claiming that a certain share of homes migrates successfully would be misleading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical result is predictable: Matter can reduce re-pairing for supported devices, while routines, account links, media behavior and unsupported products require deliberate rebuilding. Keep the old platform until the new one has passed device, automation, voice, household-access and safety checks.
