When Riot retires a League of Legends mode, the immediate change is access to that queue. Riot’s retirement announcement for Twisted Treeline changed its availability and set special reward rules, but it did not state that owned skins or champions would be deleted. Rank records and rewards require a mode-specific reading because Riot has not published one universal rule covering every retired queue.
The safest approach is to check four things in the relevant notice: the final queue date, what rank information remains usable or historical, which rewards can still be earned before closure, and whether Riot will grant participation-based rewards afterward.
What “retired” changes first
Retirement normally means the mode is being removed from the live queue or current rotation. In Riot’s documented Twisted Treeline case, the company wrote that it would retire the mode “at the end of this season.” That statement established a shutdown point for access to the queue. It did not, by itself, define a permanent account-wide change to every item or statistic associated with players who used the mode.
A queue closure and an account-inventory change are separate decisions. The retirement notice explained what players could do before the season ended and which special rewards would or would not be issued. It did not announce deletion of owned cosmetics or champions.

Queue availability
Once the final date arrives, you should assume that ordinary matchmaking for the retired mode is no longer available unless Riot later announces a return. Do not treat a mode’s disappearance from the client as proof that every historical record has been erased; it may simply mean the queue is no longer playable in the current rotation.
Account ownership
The Twisted Treeline announcement contains no statement that Riot removes skins or champions already owned on an account. That is the strongest supported conclusion: the notice documents access and reward changes, while leaving ownership of existing account content unaddressed. It is not a blanket guarantee for every future retirement, so a later notice remains the controlling source.
What happens to skins and champions?
For players worried about losing purchases or unlocked content, distinguish between ownership and mode eligibility. A skin or champion is account content; a mode’s queue and mode-specific rewards are features of that queue. Riot’s Twisted Treeline retirement notice changed the latter and did not say that the former would be removed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOwned skins
Nothing in the cited retirement announcement says that an owned skin disappears because Twisted Treeline is retired. The notice discussed the season’s rewards and a Twisted Treeline-specific chroma, not the removal of skins already in player inventories. You should therefore avoid claiming that retirement automatically deletes cosmetics, while also avoiding an absolute promise that every future mode will follow the same policy without a new Riot notice.

Champions
The same distinction applies to champions. The announcement does not describe champions as being revoked, converted, or refunded when the queue closes. Champion ownership is not presented as a mode-specific reward in that notice. If a future retirement announcement introduces a special conversion, refund, or other account action, that announcement would need to be followed on its own terms.
Mode-specific cosmetics
Special cosmetics tied to the retiring mode can have different treatment from ordinary owned content. Riot explicitly said, “There won’t be a TT specific chroma this year.” In practical terms, players could not assume that a mode-specific chroma would be issued merely because the mode was being retired. This is an example of a reward decision for one mode and one season, not a rule that all mode-themed cosmetics are always withheld.
What happens to rank?
Rank is the area where broad assumptions are least reliable. A retired queue can have its own ranked season, placement history, visible badge, or end-of-season qualification rules, but the Twisted Treeline announcement does not establish what happens to every ranked record after the queue closes.

Use the mode’s published season rules while the queue remains open. In the Twisted Treeline example, Riot preserved the ability to earn that season’s end-of-season rewards through the mode before retirement. That means the mode still mattered for the season’s reward qualification during the remaining eligibility period.

After retirement
The announcement does not say whether a Twisted Treeline rank would continue to appear in the client, be archived as historical information, or be converted into another queue’s rank. Those are materially different outcomes. A historical record could remain visible without being usable for matchmaking, while a reward qualification could be settled even if the queue itself disappears. Do not tell players that a retired mode’s rank definitely transfers, remains permanently visible, or vanishes unless the specific notice says so.
How to interpret a rank screen
If the client later shows a past rank, treat that display as evidence of a record, not proof that the retired queue is still active or that the rank affects another ladder. Conversely, if the queue no longer appears, that absence alone does not prove that every historical statistic has been deleted. The retirement announcement’s wording and any later client documentation control the result.
How rewards are handled
Riot’s Twisted Treeline announcement describes three separate reward outcomes. Keeping them separate prevents the common mistake of treating a pre-shutdown reward, a withheld cosmetic, and a post-shutdown recognition reward as one system.
| Reward question | Documented Twisted Treeline outcome | What the example means |
|---|---|---|
| Could the mode still count toward that season’s rewards? | Yes. Players could still earn that season’s end-of-season rewards through Twisted Treeline before retirement, including the Victorious skin for players who qualified. | Eligibility continued during the remaining season under the applicable rules. |
| Was a mode-specific chroma issued? | No. Riot said there would be no Twisted Treeline-specific chroma that year. | A retirement does not require Riot to create or grant a final mode-themed cosmetic. |
| Were there rewards after closure? | Riot planned a few small rewards for the most dedicated Twisted Treeline players once the mode was retired. | Post-retirement recognition can exist separately from normal seasonal rewards. |
| How was post-retirement eligibility measured? | Riot said eligibility would be based on games played before the announcement, with details to be announced later. | Participation could be measured using a cutoff that predates the final shutdown. |
End-of-season rewards
The important timing detail is that Twisted Treeline remained a path to that season’s end-of-season rewards before the queue closed. A player who qualified under the season’s rules could still earn the Victorious skin through the mode. This does not mean every retired mode will remain eligible until its final day; the relevant notice may set a different cutoff or remove eligibility earlier.

Withheld or changed rewards
The missing Twisted Treeline-specific chroma shows why players should read the reward list rather than infer a “final edition” bonus. Riot can preserve ordinary seasonal rewards while declining to issue a mode-specific item. A reward that is absent from the notice should not be presented as promised.
Post-retirement recognition
Riot also said it would grant a few small rewards to the most dedicated Twisted Treeline players after retirement. Eligibility was tied to games played before the announcement, not simply to owning the mode’s content or playing one final match. The announcement said details would come later, so the exact items and threshold should not be guessed from this example.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a retired mode come back?
“Retired” does not prove that a mode can never return. Riot said it would look for opportunities to bring older modes back when they had long-term potential and named One-for-All as an example. That language supports a narrower interpretation: retirement removes a mode from the current offering, while a later return remains possible if Riot decides the mode has a sustainable future.
A return would not automatically restore the old queue’s rank season, reward eligibility, or cosmetic schedule. Those details would need to be specified in the announcement for the comeback. Players should treat a returning mode as a new availability decision unless Riot explicitly links it to the earlier retirement rules.

How to read any future retirement notice
When Riot announces that another mode is ending, extract the answers below before assuming what happens to your account.
- Find the final date and queue condition. Note whether the mode remains playable until the end of a season, leaves on a specific date, or is removed from a rotation earlier. “Retiring” describes the decision, not necessarily the exact last match.
- Check the rank language. Look for a statement about display, archival history, matchmaking use, conversion, or season settlement. If none appears, do not claim a universal outcome for the rank.
- List rewards still earnable before closure. Separate ordinary season rewards from mode-specific cosmetics and record any qualification cutoff. A mode may continue contributing to a season while a special chroma or badge is withheld.
- Look for after-the-fact rewards. Riot may define commemorative or participation-based rewards for dedicated players. Record the measurement window, such as games played before the announcement, rather than assuming the final-day total is what counts.
- Check for return language. A statement that Riot will consider bringing back older modes means the queue may return, but it does not promise a date, frequency, or restoration of the old progression.
What players should do before a mode closes
- Read the retirement and season-reward announcement together; one may define queue access while the other defines qualification.
- Finish any rank or reward goal before the stated cutoff instead of waiting for the final available match.
- Capture your own rank and game-history information if it matters to you, because the announcement may not promise a permanent in-client display.
- Keep the wording about special rewards. If eligibility is based on games played before an announcement, later matches may not change that eligibility count.
- Do not spend currency or time pursuing a mode-specific cosmetic that Riot has explicitly said will not be issued.
Common misconceptions
“Retirement deletes everything connected to the mode.”
That is broader than Riot’s documented statement. The Twisted Treeline notice establishes queue retirement and reward treatment; it does not announce deletion of owned skins or champions.
“My old rank automatically becomes my rank in another queue.”
The announcement does not establish conversion. A mode’s rank may be handled as a historical record, settled under its own season, or treated in another way specified by a later notice.

Twisted Treeline is a counterexample: Riot said there would be no Twisted Treeline-specific chroma that year.
“Only matches played after the retirement announcement count for farewell rewards.”
Riot said Twisted Treeline eligibility would be based on games played before the announcement. A future mode could use a different window, so the cutoff must be read rather than inferred.
The practical answer for Twisted Treeline
For the documented Twisted Treeline retirement, the queue was scheduled to close at the end of the season. Before that shutdown, players could still pursue that season’s end-of-season rewards through the mode, including the Victorious skin if they qualified. Riot did not provide a Twisted Treeline-specific chroma that year. It also planned a few small rewards for dedicated players, using games played before the announcement to determine eligibility. The notice did not say that owned skins or champions would be deleted, and it did not define a universal post-retirement rule for rank display or conversion.
That combination is the key lesson: access, rank, seasonal rewards, special cosmetics, and post-retirement recognition are separate decisions. Apply the exact wording of the next retirement notice to each category instead of importing assumptions from another mode.
