A forward stock split gives you more shares at a proportionally lower price per share; a reverse split gives you fewer shares at a proportionally higher quoted price. The split itself is intended to leave your proportional ownership and the immediate value of your holding unchanged, although the market price can move afterward. Dividends are normally restated per share, while listed options may receive a new symbol, strike adjustment, multiplier, deliverable, or cash component. Your issuer, broker, and the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC) notice for the specific event control the exact result.
What a stock split changes—and what it does not
A stock split changes the number of units into which a company’s equity is divided. It does not, by itself, add assets to the company or change each shareholder’s percentage ownership. Investor.gov, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s investor site, defines a split as “an increase in the number of shares of a corporation’s stock without a change in the shareholders’ equity.”
In a forward split, the share count rises and the quoted price per share falls by the same ratio. In a reverse split, the share count falls and the quoted price rises by the reciprocal ratio. The arithmetic describes the opening adjustment, not a promise about where the market will trade later. Investor demand, liquidity, news, short selling, and listing requirements can move the price after the split takes effect.
| Action | Share count | Quoted price per share | Typical ownership result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two-for-one forward split | Multiplies by 2 | Divides by 2 | Same percentage ownership, assuming no other transaction |
| One-for-four reverse split | Divides by 4 | Multiplies by 4 | Same percentage ownership before any fractional-share settlement |
Forward splits: what appears in your account
Shares and market value
Suppose you own 100 shares quoted at $100 immediately before a two-for-one split. The split converts them into 200 shares, and the reference quote becomes about $50. The position is worth about $10,000 immediately before and immediately after the mechanical adjustment, before market movement, commissions, taxes, or other account activity.

Your ownership percentage does not change merely because the company doubled the number of shares. If the company had 1 million shares outstanding and you held 100, you still own the same fraction after the company has 2 million shares outstanding and you hold 200.
Cost basis and account displays
A broker generally reallocates your total cost basis across the new shares. In the two-for-one example, a $100 per-share basis ordinarily becomes a $50 per-share basis on twice as many shares; your aggregate basis remains approximately $10,000, subject to the broker’s records and any unrelated transactions. Keep the pre-split statement until the post-split statement shows the corrected quantity and basis.
What happens to dividends
Per-share dividends are normally restated in the same proportion as the split. If the company paid $1 per share before a two-for-one split, a post-split declaration would ordinarily be expressed as $0.50 per share. That does not automatically mean the company cut the economic dividend: 200 shares at $0.50 produce the same $100 total as 100 shares at $1, assuming the issuer declares the adjusted amount and you hold the shares for the relevant period.
The issuer’s declaration, record date, ex-dividend date, and payment terms determine what you actually receive. A split does not guarantee that a company will maintain its dividend policy, and a company can separately raise, lower, suspend, or omit a dividend.
Reverse splits: fewer shares, possible cash in lieu
Share conversion and price
In a one-for-ten reverse split, every 10 old shares become one new share. Investor.gov gives the example of 10,000 shares becoming 1,000. If the pre-split quote were $0.50, the mechanical post-split reference would be about $5, before market trading changes it.

The reverse split does not guarantee a gain. A company may use one to meet an exchange’s minimum-price requirement or to simplify its share structure, but investors can react negatively, and volatility can increase. The post-split quote can therefore be materially different from the simple ratio calculation once trading resumes.
Odd lots and fractional entitlements
If your holding is not an exact multiple of the reverse-split ratio, the conversion can create a fractional share. For example, 23 shares in a one-for-ten split mathematically produce 2.3 shares. The issuer or its agent may deliver two whole shares plus cash in lieu of the 0.3-share entitlement, rather than leaving a fractional position. Investor.gov notes that some reverse splits use cash in lieu, which can eliminate a small position entirely.

Dividends after a reverse split
The per-share dividend is normally restated upward by the reverse ratio if the issuer maintains the same aggregate policy. A dividend of $0.10 on each old share would be expressed at about $1 on each new share in a one-for-ten reverse split. Your total entitlement still depends on the number of post-split shares, the issuer’s declaration, and the record-date rules; the split itself does not create a dividend.
Fractional shares and dividend reinvestment plans
Fractional-share treatment depends on the account and the corporate-action terms. Investor.gov says fractional owners generally participate in splits and dividends according to the fraction of a whole share they own. A holder of 0.75 share receiving a $10-per-share dividend would therefore be entitled to $7.50, assuming the holder is entitled on the record date.

- A brokerage that supports fractional trading may credit the adjusted fractional quantity.
- A plan may sell the fraction and credit cash instead.
- A reverse split may cash out a fraction even when the account normally supports fractional trading.
- Dividend-reinvestment plans can create additional fractional units, so the displayed quantity may not be a whole number after the action.
There is no single universal broker policy. The issuer’s plan document and your broker’s corporate-action notice govern the result for your account.
Listed options: why the adjustment is not just a price change
The standard contract
The OCC states that each standard equity-option contract covers 100 shares of the underlying security. A normal, unadjusted call or put therefore has a 100-share multiplier, a strike price, and an expiration date. A stock split can change more than the underlying quote, however.
The OCC also states that corporate actions—including stock dividends, rights offerings, and mergers—can create adjusted contracts representing something other than 100 shares. Depending on the event, the adjustment can affect the option symbol, strike economics, contract multiplier, deliverable, and any cash-in-lieu component.
What happens to a call or put
The goal is generally to preserve the contract’s economic value immediately before the action, not to give either side an automatic windfall. A forward split usually lowers the strike and increases the deliverable proportionately, while a reverse split can raise the effective strike, reduce the deliverable, or produce a nonstandard combination. The exact formula is set in the OCC memo for that corporate action.
Do not assume that an option chain showing a new price has the same 100-share exposure. An adjusted option may have a different multiplier, so its quoted premium cannot be compared directly with an ordinary contract without calculating the full deliverable.

OCC example: one-for-four reverse split
In OCC Information Memo 55470 (2024), a one-for-four reverse split changed the option symbol from SH to SH1 and set a deliverable of 25 shares per contract. The memo defined the adjusted underlying as 0.25 times the old SH price. A position that still appears as one contract therefore no longer represents the standard 100 shares; it represents 25 shares under the memo’s terms.
This type of adjustment explains why an option symbol can change, why the strike may look unusual, and why the contract multiplier shown by a broker may not be 100. The SH/SH1 terms are an example, not a template for every split.
How to verify an adjusted option
- Record whether the issuer announced a forward or reverse split and the exact ratio.
- Note the issuer’s record date, ex-date, and effective date from its corporate-action notice.
- Find the OCC information memo for the security and event. Confirm the adjusted symbol, strike treatment, multiplier, deliverable, and any cash-in-lieu language.
- Open the broker’s position detail and compare its multiplier and deliverable with the OCC terms. A temporary display discrepancy can occur while the broker processes the action.
- Save the pre-action contract quantity, premium, cost basis, and account statement for your records.
Dates that determine what you see
Record date, ex-date, and effective date
These dates serve different purposes. The record date identifies holders entitled to the corporate action under the issuer’s terms. The ex-date is the market’s adjustment date for trading and, for dividends, the date on which a buyer may no longer receive the declared dividend. The effective date is when the split conversion is legally implemented. Notices may use different labels or combine dates, so rely on the issuer’s exact wording.
Broker posting delays
The official sources do not establish one universal time by which every broker must post split shares, adjusted cost basis, cash in lieu, or option changes. A broker can show a temporary zero balance, a placeholder symbol, or an unchanged basis while its operations team processes the event. Do not trade an apparently incorrect position until you have checked the corporate-action notice and contacted the broker if the discrepancy persists.

Tax records and Form 8937
A split is commonly treated as a non-sale share reorganization, with total basis allocated over the adjusted number of shares. Cash received for a fractional share can be a separate taxable transaction, and the treatment of an adjusted option can depend on the jurisdiction, account type, holding period, and later sale. Neither the split ratio nor a broker’s display alone determines your final tax result.

The OCC says it publishes IRS Form 8937 information for certain equity-option and security-futures adjustments when the number of contracts increases, typically for integer splits or distributions. That publication is reporting information; it does not determine every investor’s basis, gain, loss, or cash-in-lieu treatment.
- Keep the issuer notice, OCC memo, broker confirmation, and statements from before and after the action.
- Record the original quantity, total basis, per-unit basis, option premium, and any cash received for a fraction.
- Check whether the broker later corrected the basis or issued a revised tax document.
- Ask a qualified tax professional about the rules that apply to your country, account, entity, and transaction history.
Forward versus reverse split: practical comparison
| Question | Forward split | Reverse split |
|---|---|---|
| What happens to shares? | Each old share becomes multiple new shares. | Multiple old shares become one new share. |
| What happens to the quoted price? | Falls by the split ratio at the mechanical adjustment. | Rises by the reciprocal ratio at the mechanical adjustment. |
| How is the per-share dividend shown? | Usually lower by the same ratio. | Usually higher by the same ratio if the policy is maintained. |
| Can a fraction arise? | Possible in plans or fractional accounts, especially where existing fractions are multiplied. | Common when holdings are not exact multiples of the ratio. |
| Can cash in lieu be paid? | Possible under plan or issuer rules. | Often possible for leftover fractions; terms control. |
| What may happen to an option? | Strike, multiplier, deliverable, or symbol may be adjusted. | Nonstandard deliverables and new symbols are possible. |
Worked examples
Two-for-one split with a dividend
You own 100 shares at $100, with a declared $1-per-share dividend. After a two-for-one split, you would ordinarily see 200 shares at an approximately $50 reference price and a post-split dividend stated at $0.50 per share. If you remain entitled to the dividend, the total is $100 either way. The market can move above or below the reference price as soon as trading reflects supply, demand, and new information.
One-for-ten reverse split with a fractional remainder
You own 23 shares. The mathematical result is 2.3 shares. If the terms provide cash in lieu, the issuer may deliver two shares and cash for 0.3 share. The amount of cash depends on the event’s specified valuation and may not equal the price you see at the moment you check your account.

Adjusted option after a one-for-four reverse split
An ordinary contract would normally cover 100 shares, but the OCC’s SH1 example delivered 25 shares. The new symbol and deliverable mean that multiplying the displayed premium by 100 would give the wrong exposure. Use the memo’s multiplier and deliverable when valuing or closing the position.
If your account looks wrong after the split
- Share count is different: Recalculate it using the announced ratio, then check whether a fraction was paid in cash.
- Price appears to have collapsed or jumped: Compare the old and new quotes using the ratio before concluding that value was lost or created.
- Dividend per share changed: Multiply the new rate by the new eligible share count and verify the issuer’s declaration.
- Option symbol changed: Locate the OCC memo and confirm the multiplier and deliverable; do not rely on the familiar 100-share assumption.
- Cost basis is missing or incorrect: Save statements, wait for the broker’s final posting, and request a corporate-action correction if it remains wrong.
- A small position disappeared: Check the reverse-split cash-in-lieu terms and the broker’s transaction history.
Questions to answer before trading
Before placing an order after a split, confirm the exact security symbol, whether the quote is adjusted, the effective date, and whether your option is standard or adjusted. For a dividend, verify the record-date eligibility and the declared post-split rate. For tax reporting, retain the original and revised statements rather than relying only on the current account screen.
