Turning off Reminders in iCloud on one iPhone, iPad, or Mac disconnects only that device from the iCloud Reminders service. The iCloud lists disappear from the disconnected device, but Apple says the reminders remain in your online account and on other devices that are still configured with the same Apple Account. Turn Reminders on again to restore access.
It is not the same as deleting your reminders or signing out of your Apple Account. The important precaution is to verify that your lists are visible in iCloud.com/reminders or on another configured device before changing the switch.
The short answer: the switch affects one device
iCloud Reminders synchronization is controlled separately on each device. If you turn off Reminders under iCloud settings on your iPhone, that iPhone stops connecting to the iCloud Reminders database. Devices signed in to the same Apple Account with Reminders still enabled continue to display and synchronize the lists.

Apple’s account guidance explains that when an account is removed from Reminders, reminders no longer appear on that iPhone, while they remain in the internet account and on other devices already set up with it. The same device-versus-account distinction is why disabling one service should not be treated as erasing the account’s data.

What you see locally can depend on the device’s software version and on whether you also use other Reminders accounts, such as an Exchange account. Apple does not promise that every release shows an identical “keep a local copy” prompt when only the iCloud Reminders switch is turned off.
Check your iCloud copy before switching anything off
Before disconnecting a device, make sure the lists you care about exist somewhere you can still reach. This is especially important if the device has not synchronized recently, if it is offline, or if you are troubleshooting missing reminders.
- Open iCloud.com/reminders in a browser and confirm that the relevant lists and recent changes are present.
- Alternatively, check another iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac signed in to the same Apple Account with Reminders enabled.
- Write down which lists are iCloud lists and which belong to another account or are stored only locally. Account names and list locations are visible in the Reminders app’s list groups.
- If a recent reminder is missing from iCloud.com and every other device, wait for the device to reconnect and synchronize before disabling the service.
This check gives you an independent copy to consult if the disconnected device no longer shows the iCloud lists.
How to turn off iCloud Reminders on an iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top to open Apple Account settings.
- Tap iCloud.
- Tap See All (some releases use Show All).
- Find Reminders and turn its switch off.
- Open the Reminders app and review the list groups. The iCloud section and its lists should no longer be available on that device while the service is disabled.
Menu wording changes between iOS and iPadOS releases, but the path remains the iCloud settings for your Apple Account, followed by the complete app list and Reminders. Do not confuse this switch with deleting individual lists inside the Reminders app.
What changes immediately on the disconnected device
iCloud lists stop appearing
Once the service is off, the iCloud lists are removed from that device’s Reminders view. Apple describes the result for a removed account as: “When you remove or delete an account, the reminders in that account no longer appear on your iPhone.” The absence of a list in the app therefore does not prove that it was deleted from iCloud.

The device no longer has an iCloud sync connection
Apple’s iCloud settings guidance says that when iCloud is turned off for an app, the app no longer connects with iCloud and the data available to that app on the device exists only on the device. In practical terms, the disconnected device cannot use the normal iCloud path to fetch new cloud changes or send local changes to iCloud. The online account remains separate and can still be used by enabled devices.
Other Reminders accounts can behave differently
Disabling iCloud Reminders does not automatically disable Reminders accounts provided by other services. Lists belonging to Exchange or another configured account may continue to appear and synchronize according to that account’s own settings. Check the account label before assuming that every visible list is an iCloud list.
What happens on your other Apple devices
iCloud synchronization continues normally on devices that satisfy both conditions: they are signed in to the same Apple Account, and Reminders is enabled for iCloud there. Apple documents synchronized Reminders across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac. A reminder created or edited on one of those still-connected devices can continue to propagate to the other connected devices and to iCloud.com.
The device where you switched the service off is the exception. It will not receive those updates until you reconnect Reminders. If you later enable the service on that device, it can access the current iCloud lists again, subject to software compatibility and a successful account connection.
Do new reminders still sync while iCloud is off?
Not through iCloud from the disconnected device. Because the Reminders app is no longer connected to iCloud on that device, a reminder created there while the service is disabled has no active iCloud synchronization path. It may be stored in a local list or in another account that remains enabled, but it should not be described as an iCloud reminder that is safely synchronized.

Likewise, edits made to an iCloud list while the device is disconnected are not sent through the iCloud path at that time. The safest approach is to avoid making important changes to iCloud lists on the disconnected device. Create or edit the reminder on another connected device, or turn iCloud Reminders back on first.

Apple’s documentation does not establish one universal local-copy prompt for every iOS or iPadOS version. If your device presents a choice after you switch the service off, read it carefully; do not assume that selecting a local option will preserve a future two-way sync.
How to turn iCloud Reminders back on
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud, then See All or Show All.
- Turn Reminders on.
- Open the Reminders app.
- Look in the iCloud section and select the lists you need to display.
After reconnection, allow time for the device to contact iCloud. Keep it online and signed in to the same Apple Account. If the lists do not return, check the account shown in Settings, confirm that iCloud storage and network access are available, and compare the account’s lists at iCloud.com/reminders.
Do not create a second list with the same name while waiting. Duplicate lists make it harder to tell whether synchronization has completed and can lead to adding a reminder to the wrong account.
Shared lists: what changes for collaborators
Turning off Reminders on your device does not cancel a shared list for everyone else. People who still have access and whose devices remain connected can continue to see and edit the shared list. Your disconnected device simply stops presenting the iCloud list and cannot participate in its updates while the service is off.

When you reconnect, the shared list should become available again through the iCloud section, provided the invitation and account access are still valid. Changes made by collaborators while your device was disconnected can then appear after synchronization. If a list was shared with a different Apple Account than the one currently signed in, reconnecting the switch alone will not restore access; verify the account identity and the sharing invitation.
Turning off Reminders versus removing an account or signing out
These actions have different scopes and should not be used interchangeably.
| Action | Effect on this device | Effect on iCloud and other devices | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turn off Reminders in iCloud | The device stops connecting to iCloud Reminders, and iCloud lists no longer appear there. | Apple says the reminders remain in the internet account and on devices already configured with it. | Temporarily disconnecting one device or troubleshooting synchronization. |
| Leave Reminders enabled | The device continues to show its iCloud lists and use the normal sync path. | Connected devices and iCloud.com continue to exchange changes. | Keeping a consistent set of lists across devices. |
| Remove an account from Reminders | Lists belonging to that account disappear from the device. | The account’s reminders remain in the internet account and on other previously configured devices, according to Apple. | Stopping use of one account without deleting its online data. |
| Sign out of the Apple Account | Multiple iCloud services are affected, not just Reminders, and the device may show additional prompts. | Consequences depend on the sign-out choices and other devices still using the account. | Changing the device’s primary account, not ordinary Reminders troubleshooting. |
If your goal is only to stop Reminders syncing on one device, use the Reminders switch rather than signing out of the entire Apple Account.

Access on another Apple device requires more than the same account: the device must support the relevant iCloud Reminders features and run compatible software. Apple documents version limitations for upgraded Reminders. A device running older software may not show upgraded lists or every feature, even when it is signed in correctly.

Troubleshooting common outcomes
“My reminders disappeared from my iPhone.”
First check whether Reminders is still enabled at Settings > your name > iCloud > See All. If it is off, the missing iCloud lists are an expected result of the disconnected state. Verify the lists at iCloud.com/reminders or another connected device, then re-enable Reminders.
“The list is visible elsewhere, but new changes are missing here.”
The device may still be disconnected, offline, signed in to a different Apple Account, or running incompatible software. Confirm the account identity, enable Reminders, connect to the internet, and allow synchronization to complete before editing.
“I created reminders while the switch was off.”
Identify where those reminders were saved. A local list or another enabled account is not automatically converted into an iCloud list. Preserve important entries by recording or moving them only after the iCloud lists have returned, and check for duplicates before deleting anything.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“I am being asked about keeping data.”
Read the prompt for the specific account and software version. Apple does not guarantee that every release offers the same local-copy choice when only the Reminders switch is disabled. Rely on the verified iCloud.com copy and another connected device rather than assuming the prompt has identical behavior everywhere.
“A shared list is gone.”
Confirm that you are signed in to the Apple Account that received the invitation, that Reminders is enabled, and that the list still exists for another collaborator. Reconnecting the service restores access only when the account and sharing permission are still valid.
Quick Recap
A safe decision checklist
- Need to disconnect one device temporarily? Verify the cloud copy, then turn off only Reminders in that device’s iCloud settings.
- Need all devices to stay current? Leave Reminders enabled wherever you expect to create or edit iCloud reminders.
- Need to change Apple Accounts? Treat sign-out as a broader account operation and review every prompt; it is not equivalent to the Reminders switch.
- Need to recover access? Re-enable Reminders, open the iCloud section in the Reminders app, and confirm the lists at iCloud.com/reminders.
- Unsure whether a reminder is safe? Do not delete or recreate it until you have checked the online account and another connected device.
