In the U.S., you can usually keep your phone number by asking your new carrier to transfer it while your current line is still active. The transfer moves the number; it does not automatically cancel every service on the old account, erase device payments, or unlock your phone. Start the port with the new carrier, then check the old account for any remaining lines, balances, and final charges.
What changes when you switch carriers—and what does not
- Your number: It usually transfers after the new carrier accepts the request and verifies your old-account information. Some numbers may not be eligible, including cases where providers lack a transfer agreement. T-Mobile explains number-transfer requirements.
- Your old line: Keep it active until the transfer finishes. The FCC says only activated wireless numbers can be ported and warns that canceling first may prevent you from keeping your number. Its guidance is direct: “You should not contact your current wireless provider first and cancel or deactivate your wireless service because this may prevent you from being able to keep your current number.” Read the FCC consumer guide.
- Your old account: Porting may remove the transferred line, but other lines or connected services can remain active and continue billing. Confirm the account status with your former carrier. Verizon describes what can happen to remaining connected lines.
- Your phone: Number portability does not unlock a device or ensure it works on the new network. Check both the phone’s unlock status and destination-network compatibility before you move. See T-Mobile’s bring-your-phone guidance and Verizon’s port-in FAQ.
- Money you owe: A port does not cancel an existing service agreement, device installment balance, applicable termination charge, taxes, or other final charges. Check your agreement and billing terms with the old carrier. Provider balance-reimbursement offers, if available, are promotions with their own eligibility rules and deadlines—not a general right.
- Saved content: Back up contacts, messages, and voicemail before starting. T-Mobile says voicemail resets after a completed port; carrier guidance does not establish one universal rule for every saved item.
How to switch without putting your number at risk
- Check number and phone eligibility. Ask the destination carrier whether it can accept your number and whether your current phone is compatible. Separately confirm that the phone is unlocked or learn what conditions the old carrier requires to unlock it.
- Gather the correct account details. Get the account number shown on the old carrier’s bill or account, the billing address or ZIP code, and the required transfer PIN or port-out password. A Number Transfer PIN may be different from your ordinary account passcode and may be specific to the line. On a family plan, the account owner or an authorized user may have to approve the request. T-Mobile transfer instructions, AT&T’s Number Transfer PIN guidance, and Verizon’s port-in FAQ explain their respective requirements.
- Remove any port-out block and generate a current PIN. If your old carrier has port protection enabled, follow its process to authorize the transfer. T-Mobile, for example, says its port-out protection can block transfers until it is managed for the line. Do not assume an old PIN is still valid.
- Back up important information, then have the new carrier start the transfer. Do not cancel the old service yourself first. The FCC warns that cancellation before porting can jeopardize keeping the number.
- Monitor the transfer and test service. Follow the new carrier’s status updates. Once the new SIM or eSIM is active, test incoming and outgoing calls and texts. T-Mobile says a temporary dual-service period can last up to 24 hours; that is its operational guidance, not a universal duration for every carrier.
- Review the old account after completion. Check whether other lines or connected services remain open, ask when the final statement will issue, and confirm outstanding device balances or other charges. Do not assume the final bill arrives on a particular date or that unused service will be prorated; those terms depend on the provider, plan, and agreement.
What to check on the old account after the port
A transferred line and an account are not always the same thing. If other family-plan lines, connected devices, or services remain, the account may stay open and continue billing. Verizon notes that remaining connected device lines may need to be canceled when the final phone line moves. Contact the old carrier to verify what is still active rather than relying on the number transfer to close everything.
Review the old agreement and latest bill for device installments, plan charges, taxes, and any applicable termination fee. Ask the provider how and when it will bill the remaining amount. A separate reimbursement promotion from a new carrier, when offered, should be checked for its written eligibility conditions and submission deadline; it does not make porting itself debt forgiveness.

Why the transfer can fail or leave you without usable service
- The old line was canceled or deactivated: The FCC says only active wireless numbers can be ported. Keep the line active until the new carrier confirms completion.
- Account details do not match: Check the exact account number, billing address or ZIP code, and transfer PIN or password. If the account is shared, ask the owner or an authorized user to handle approval.
- A port block is enabled: Ask the current carrier whether port-out protection or another restriction must be removed before the new carrier can proceed.
- The phone is locked or incompatible: The number may transfer while the old phone still cannot connect to the destination network. Resolve unlock conditions and confirm compatibility separately.
- The number is ineligible: Some numbers cannot be transferred between particular providers. Ask the destination carrier to verify eligibility before relying on a move date.
Before you choose a new carrier
Compare the factors that affect the switch, not just the advertised plan: whether the carrier can accept your number, what credentials it requires, whether your phone is unlocked and compatible, the plan and coverage terms, the remaining device balance, and how it handles transfer status and other lines on the old account. If a carrier offers to reimburse a balance, read the actual offer for eligibility and deadlines rather than treating reimbursement as automatic.
