Leaving your carrier does not erase what you owe on an iPhone. Depending on your installment agreement and promotion, you may have to pay the remaining device balance at cancellation and lose future trade-in credits. A trade-in already accepted by the carrier is different from a pending trade-in or an early-upgrade turn-in, and phone unlocking is a separate question. Check your specific agreement and offer before cancelling.
What happens to your iPhone payments when you cancel?
Your service and your device financing are separate obligations. Cancelling a wireless line does not automatically forgive an iPhone’s unpaid installment balance. Many carrier promotions also make credits conditional on keeping eligible service, so cancellation can leave you owing more while stopping the credits that would have reduced the device cost over time.
The exact outcome depends on the carrier, installment agreement, promotion, account status, and sometimes when the agreement began. A carrier’s general support page is useful, but the terms attached to your particular offer are what matter. Before cancelling, find out whether the balance becomes due immediately, whether any installments can continue after cancellation, and which future credits you would forfeit.

Keep the two amounts separate when you ask for an estimate: the unpaid device balance is what remains on the installment agreement, while future promotional credits are reductions you might have received if you kept qualifying service. A credit already posted to a bill is not necessarily a promise that the rest of the scheduled credits will continue after cancellation.

How the major US carriers describe cancellation
These are published US carrier terms checked on October 13, 2026. They illustrate common outcomes, not a universal rule for every account or promotion.

For T-Mobile, the offer-details page says eligible customers who have already cancelled must call within 60 days to request continuation of installments. That exception is limited to certain eligible EIPs; do not assume it applies to your agreement. Contact T-Mobile before cancellation to confirm your options and any deadline.
AT&T’s cited trade-in offer also illustrates how the fine print can combine several conditions: it calls for an eligible smartphone on a qualifying installment agreement, qualifying postpaid service, and trade-in within 30 days of activation. Its cancellation language applies to that offer. Do not transfer its terms, deadlines, or any advertised credit amount to a different AT&T deal without checking that deal’s terms.
Calculate what leaving could cost
Compare the cost of staying with the cost of switching using the figures in your account, not just the advertised monthly plan price. A lower monthly bill elsewhere may not offset an accelerated device payoff and the promotional credits you lose.
- Get the exact payoff amount. Check your carrier account or ask support for the iPhone’s current remaining installment balance and the amount due if you cancel today.
- Find your promotion terms. Record the promotion ID, remaining credit schedule, eligible-plan requirements, and cancellation rule. Do not assume the trade-in’s advertised value is a cash payment or a lump-sum reduction of the balance; credits may be applied across the installment term.
- Add up future credits at risk. Multiply the remaining monthly credits by the number of scheduled months, then compare that amount with the device payoff and the service savings you expect from switching. Use the schedule shown for your account rather than a headline offer amount.
- Ask whether installments can continue after cancellation. Get the answer for your exact EIP and promotion, including any request deadline. Save a support transcript or account record.
- Check the final bill. Look for the device payoff, credits that stopped, and any separate plan-discount chargeback that may apply under your agreement.
One useful comparison is the expected cost of keeping the line and receiving the remaining credits versus the costs your carrier says would follow cancellation: any accelerated payoff, credits you would lose, and any separately applicable chargeback. Then compare that with the service savings you realistically expect over the same period. This is an account-specific calculation, not a reason to assume that every promotion works the same way.
Verizon’s FAQ distinguishes device-promotion credits from commitment-plan discounts. Do not treat a device-credit loss and a plan-discount chargeback as the same charge; ask the carrier to itemize each one on your account.

What “trade-in” can mean—and what happens in each case
“Trade-in” is not one single status. Work out whether the old phone has already been received and accepted, is still on its way, or is part of a separate early-upgrade arrangement. Those cases can have different deadlines and consequences.
Your trade-in has already been received
Once a carrier receives and accepts the trade-in, the new iPhone’s promotional credits may appear over time rather than immediately. Verizon says some credits can take one to two billing periods to appear after it receives the device. The cited AT&T offer says credits begin within three bills after trade-in completion and are spread across the installment term. A delay within those stated windows does not necessarily mean the trade-in was rejected; check the trade-in status and the offer’s terms.
Neither a completed trade-in nor credits already applied necessarily protects the remaining future credits if you cancel. For the cited AT&T offer, cancellation ends credits and makes the remaining installment balance on the purchased device due. Verizon also says cancelling a line receiving a device promotion ends credits and normally requires the remaining device balance to be paid. Confirm how your specific offer treats cancellation.
In other words, handing over the old phone and completing the promotion does not by itself settle every installment on the new one. The trade-in may qualify you for a credit schedule, while continued service and other offer conditions determine whether later credits are still issued. If credits have not appeared yet, ask whether the trade-in has been received and processed and when the offer says credits should start.
Your trade-in is still pending or within its deadline
Do not cancel until you know whether the old phone has been received, inspected, and accepted, and whether you have met the offer’s return deadline. The cited AT&T offer requires trade-in within 30 days of activation. That deadline belongs to this specific offer; other promotions may have different terms.

For Verizon, qualifying conditions can include an eligible plan and a device in good working and cosmetic condition. Some promotions for existing customers require 60 consecutive days of activity on a Verizon account. Verizon says credits begin after it receives the trade-in and can take one to two billing periods to show. Check the exact promotion because those conditions do not apply uniformly to every offer.

Before ending service, confirm the carrier has the trade-in, whether it has been accepted, and whether anything else is required from you. If it is still in transit or awaiting inspection, ask how cancellation would affect that specific promotion and retain the carrier’s answer. Do not assume that meeting a deadline alone guarantees acceptance; the cited Verizon terms, for example, can include device-condition requirements.
You are using an early-upgrade turn-in option
An early-upgrade turn-in can be a special arrangement that settles a device balance if you meet its conditions; it is not the same as an ordinary trade-in. AT&T’s installment agreement describes a Next Up Anytime option that requires an active feature, an account and agreement in good standing, a required payment, and return of the iPhone in good physical and functional condition within the designated time. If the turn-in succeeds, AT&T says it will pay off or settle the outstanding installment balance.
Under that agreement, cancelling the add-on forfeits the turn-in option and requires the remaining installment charges to be paid. Read AT&T’s installment agreement, section 17 and confirm that your account qualifies before relying on this route. It is not a general rule that turning in a phone will erase debt when you leave a carrier.
Ask whether your feature is active, whether the required payment has been made, what return window applies, and what device condition is required. The payoff arrangement depends on a successful qualifying turn-in. A regular trade-in offer, a device returned under this special early-upgrade option, and a cancellation are three distinct events, so make sure the carrier identifies which rules apply to your account.
Will your iPhone unlock when you leave?
Do not treat payoff and unlocking as the same step. Paying the device balance may satisfy a financing requirement, but it does not by itself establish that the phone is eligible for immediate unlocking. The carrier’s unlocking conditions apply separately, so ask whether your exact iPhone is eligible and request the unlock before relying on it with another service.
T-Mobile’s 2026 offer-details page says: “If your device is paid in full and has been used for 40 day or more on our network, you may request an unlock when you contact us to cancel.” The “40 day” wording is T-Mobile’s published wording. It is a T-Mobile criterion described on that page, not a general unlocking rule for Verizon, AT&T, or all carriers.

Before switching, ask the carrier to confirm both that the device is paid off or how the balance will be handled and that the phone meets its unlocking conditions. Request the unlock while you still have the carrier’s guidance in front of you, and verify the status before depending on the iPhone with a new service. There is no shared unlock deadline or rule across the three carriers.
Before you cancel: account-specific checklist
- Check the current iPhone installment payoff and ask whether cancellation makes it due at once.
- Find the promotion ID and remaining credit schedule. Confirm the qualifying plan, line, and account conditions, plus the cancellation rule.
- Verify the trade-in status: received, accepted, or still pending. Note any remaining deadline and the required device condition.
- If you have an early-upgrade feature, ask whether it is active, what payment or return requirements remain, and whether cancelling it ends the option.
- Ask whether your carrier will allow installments to continue after service ends and whether you must request that before cancellation or within a stated period afterward.
- Ask the carrier to confirm unlock eligibility and the steps to request an unlock. Do not assume the phone will work on your next service as soon as you cancel.
- Save the carrier’s written response or support transcript, then review your final bill for the device payoff, lost credits, and any separately applicable plan-discount chargeback.
When you contact support, ask for numbers tied to your account rather than a general explanation: the payoff if you cancel on a specified date, the amount of future credits remaining, any deadline to keep installments going, and the status of the trade-in. If the carrier says a continuation exception or early-upgrade payoff applies, ask it to identify the applicable promotion or agreement and save that response.

Carrier offers change, and a policy page may describe several distinct situations. The examples above show why small details matter: AT&T’s cited offer has a 30-day trade-in deadline and a specific cancellation consequence; Verizon’s FAQ includes a Missouri payment exception and conditions that can end credits apart from cancellation; and T-Mobile identifies promotion- and EIP-date-specific installment continuation, including a 60-day request window for certain eligible agreements.
Use those details as prompts for questions, not as substitutes for your contract. Ask support to identify your installment agreement and promotion, state the payoff and lost-credit amounts, confirm any trade-in or turn-in deadline, and explain the unlock process for your device. If the answer is unclear, get it in writing before you end service.
No single carrier rule covers every “leave my carrier” situation. Even on the same network, an installment started under one offer may have different continuation terms from another, and a promotion can require a particular plan or line status. Review the agreement and offer attached to your own account, especially if your phone was financed in a prior promotion, transferred between accounts, or is subject to a separate early-upgrade feature.

Possibly, but distinguish that from device-promotion credits. Verizon’s FAQ treats device credits and commitment-plan discounts separately. Ask the carrier to itemize any device payoff, credits that will stop, and any separately applicable plan-discount chargeback on your account.
The Bottom Line
Before you leave, get your exact iPhone payoff, the value and conditions of any remaining credits, trade-in or turn-in status, and unlock eligibility in writing. Cancellation may make the balance due and stop credits, but the result depends on your specific agreement and offer.
