When Starlink is unavailable, devices may still show the Starlink Wi-Fi network even though there is no internet access. First determine whether the failure is local power, the terminal or router, a damaged cable, an obstruction, weather, an account or service-location issue, or a wider Starlink interruption. Then use an independent connection—usually cellular, wired broadband, or fixed wireless—or keep local equipment running with a UPS if power is the real problem.

There is no universal best backup. A phone hotspot can cover a short outage, while a 4G/5G hotspot or dual-WAN router is more practical for a household that needs automatic or sustained failover. A UPS solves power loss only; it cannot restore a satellite or cellular network.

What “Starlink is unavailable” actually means

Internet loss can occur at several points, and the remedy depends on which one failed:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Power: The Starlink terminal, router, or both have lost electricity.
  • Equipment or cabling: A loose, damaged, or improperly seated cable, router fault, or failed terminal interrupts service.
  • Obstructions or installation: Trees, buildings, or a poor installation location can cause repeated interruptions.
  • Weather or environment: Severe conditions can affect the satellite link or local equipment.
  • Account or service location: A plan, account, or location-status problem can prevent service even when hardware is powered.
  • Wider interruption: Starlink or the local network may be experiencing an outage outside your property.

The Wi-Fi name appearing on a phone or laptop proves only that the device can reach the local router. It does not prove that the router has a working path to the internet. Use the Starlink app’s status screen and alerts before buying backup equipment.

Diagnose the failure before switching or spending

1. Read the Starlink app status and alerts

Open the Starlink app and review its current status, alerts, and interruption history. Starlink’s intermittent-service guidance recommends checking the app first, then determining whether one device or every device is affected. If only one device fails, troubleshoot that device’s Wi-Fi, network settings, or browser rather than replacing the Starlink connection. See Starlink’s intermittent-internet troubleshooting guidance.

2. Check power and cables

Confirm that the outlet, surge protector, power supply, router, and terminal are receiving power. Inspect visible cable runs for cuts, crushed sections, bent connectors, or loose plugs, and reseat connections without forcing them. The Starlink app can report a power disconnect. Starlink describes that alert as: “The Starlink system reports this alert when recovering from an unexpected power disconnect.” For a continuing alert, its guidance is to check the power source and secure cable connections; see the Starlink app-alert explanation.

3. Reboot and isolate third-party equipment

Follow the app’s reboot instructions, allowing the system time to reacquire service. If you use a separate mesh system, switch, firewall, or other third-party device, temporarily disconnect it and test with the Starlink router alone. This isolates a failed downstream device from a satellite-link problem. Restore the third-party equipment only after the direct connection works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check for obstructions safely

In the Starlink app, open Check for Obstructions and review the obstruction map and interruption information. Starlink says, “The simplest way to fix your obstruction-related interruptions is to use the "Check for Obstructions" tool in the Starlink app to find a location on your property that does not contain obstructions, and relocate your Starlink.” Read the full guidance at How to fix obstructions. Do not climb onto a roof, cut trees, or move a mounted terminal if the work is unsafe; use a qualified installer instead.

5. Check weather, account, and service status

Look for heavy precipitation, high winds, or conditions that could have moved or damaged equipment. Also verify that the account is active and that the terminal is assigned to the intended service location. If the app indicates a broader service interruption after local checks pass, a backup connection is the only immediate way to get online.

Backup options compared

Option Useful when What you need Main limitation
Phone hotspot A short outage and a phone with usable cellular service Hotspot-enabled plan, mobile data, and a charged phone Hotspot rules, data allowances, battery life, signal, congestion, and speed depend on the carrier and location.
Dedicated 4G/5G mobile hotspot You want a separate cellular connection for several devices or longer outages Hotspot hardware, compatible SIM or account, coverage, and a suitable data plan Requires mobile coverage and may have data limits or reduced performance under congestion.
Carrier cellular backup Your provider offers an eligible backup service tied to your home connection Qualifying account, compatible router or equipment, mobile signal, and current eligibility Terms are provider-specific and generally temporary; it is not available at every address.
Dual-WAN or cellular-failover router You want automatic switching between Starlink and another connection A router supporting both WAN paths, a configured secondary link, and correct outage detection Setup and failover behavior vary by model; a router cannot create cellular coverage.
Wired broadband or fixed wireless A second fixed service is available at your address Address qualification, installation, modem or antenna, and a separate subscription Availability, price, and outage independence must be checked locally.
UPS or battery backup The interruption is caused by a local power failure A UPS sized for the terminal, router, and other required equipment Runtime is limited, and it cannot repair a provider outage or replace a missing cellular signal.

Compare alternatives on six points: whether they fail independently of Starlink, local signal or availability, data and eligibility rules, automatic versus manual switching, expected workload, and power requirements.

Using a phone hotspot

A phone hotspot is the fastest manual fallback. Turn on the phone’s hotspot feature, note its network name and password, and join that network from the devices that need access. If several household devices must reconnect, a laptop or travel router can sometimes share the hotspot, but compatibility and performance depend on the equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the mobile plan before relying on this method. Some plans restrict tethering, impose a separate hotspot allowance, or reduce speed after a threshold. A phone also consumes battery and may become hot under sustained use. Keep it charging, place it where cellular reception is strongest, and stop background updates or video streaming when data is limited.

Cellular is an independent path only when the mobile network itself is operating. Towers, backhaul, local power, congestion, or a regional disaster can affect both your phone and a dedicated hotspot, so do not assume cellular service is immune to every outage that affects Starlink.

Choosing a dedicated 4G/5G hotspot

A dedicated hotspot separates internet access from your personal phone and is better for a household, remote-work setup, or outage lasting more than a few hours. Confirm coverage at the exact property, the supported cellular bands, the plan’s hotspot data allowance, and whether the provider permits the expected use.

Some hotspot-and-cradle systems can accept a primary wired connection and switch to 5G when that primary path fails. For example, a NETGEAR support procedure documents failover from a primary connection, including Starlink, when a compatible mobile hotspot and cradle are used. The instructions apply to that specific hardware combination, not to every hotspot. See the vendor’s failover documentation.

Automatic failover with a dual-WAN or cellular router

How it works

A failover router monitors the primary WAN connection. When its detection test shows that the path is offline, it changes the default route to the secondary WAN, such as a phone tether, 4G/5G modem, or hotspot. When the primary path is healthy again, the router may switch back automatically or require a setting that controls recovery behavior.

  • Unlocked, portable hot spot for 5G and 4G LTE around the world, certified with AT&T requires a 5G compatible SIM card. Ask your 5G wireless network provider for the best 5G data plan for your needs

What to configure

  1. Connect Starlink to the router’s primary WAN input using the arrangement supported by your Starlink hardware.
  2. Connect the cellular modem, hotspot, or other secondary service to the router’s backup WAN or USB interface.
  3. In the router’s internet or multi-WAN settings, select the primary and backup interfaces and enable failover.
  4. Set an offline-detection method. Routers may test link state, DNS, or an external address; a device that is physically connected but cannot reach the internet requires more than a cable-status test.
  5. Choose whether clients keep the same local network and whether the router automatically returns to Starlink when it recovers.
  6. Test by disconnecting the primary internet path—not the router’s power—and verify that a client can load a new page through cellular.

Menus differ. TP-Link’s Deco documentation, for example, includes an offline-detection setting for 4G/5G backup; it is a product-specific example rather than a universal procedure. Consult TP-Link’s documented setup and your router’s own manual.

Expect a brief transition

Existing video calls, VPN sessions, downloads, and games may disconnect when the public IP address changes. Failover is designed to restore general connectivity, not preserve every session. Test the applications that matter—work VPN, security cameras, remote desktop, and voice calls—and plan for a manual reconnect when necessary.

Carrier-provided cellular backup

Some carriers sell backup that is integrated with a qualifying home-internet account and router. Verizon’s Cellular Wi-Fi Backup FAQs state that its service is for qualifying customers, depends on mobile signal, and is intended as temporary backup. Those conditions apply to Verizon’s named service and should not be generalized to every carrier. Check current eligibility, hardware requirements, data rules, and coverage at your address at the carrier’s support page.

Adding a second fixed connection

If your address has cable, fiber, DSL, terrestrial fixed wireless, or another wired service, a second fixed provider can be more consistent than cellular for heavy use. Ask each provider about installation time, equipment, data policies, upload performance, and whether its last-mile path is physically separate from the infrastructure that serves Starlink’s local ground connection.

Do not treat a technology label as proof of availability. The FCC lists fixed-access categories—including terrestrial fixed wireless and satellite—in its Fixed Technology Codes, updated February 28, 2025. The categories describe how providers report technology; they do not show which service can be ordered at your address.

What a UPS can and cannot do

A UPS keeps powered equipment running during a local electrical failure for its available runtime. Depending on the installation, that may include the Starlink router, terminal power supply, failover router, modem, and network switch. Fairfax County’s consumer guidance explains the role of backup power at its Backup Power page.

Estimate the combined wattage of every device that must remain on, then choose a UPS with enough capacity and the desired runtime. More equipment means less runtime. A UPS does not restore a failed satellite link, clear an obstruction, fix a damaged cable, or keep a cellular tower operating. Test it periodically, replace its battery according to the manufacturer’s schedule, and leave enough capacity for startup loads.

Practical outage plans

Short, occasional outages

Keep a charged phone, enable hotspot service on the plan, and store the Starlink app and account credentials where they are accessible offline. This is usually the lowest-complexity approach when only one or two people need messaging, email, or light browsing.

Home office or small business

Use a dedicated 4G/5G hotspot or cellular modem connected to a compatible failover router. Add a UPS sized for the networking equipment, and test the failover while no critical meeting or transaction is in progress. Document how to reconnect VPNs and other sessions after the public IP changes.

Remote or high-consequence location

Prefer two genuinely different access paths—such as Starlink plus a fixed wireless or wired service, with cellular as an additional emergency option—if those services are available. Keep spare cables only when they are approved for your equipment, protect the installation from weather, and arrange safe professional help for roof or tree work.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Mistake: assuming visible Wi-Fi means internet access. Check the Starlink app and test more than one device.
  • Mistake: buying a UPS for a provider outage. Use it for power failures; use a second connection for network failures.
  • Mistake: selecting a hotspot without checking tethering terms. Confirm hotspot allowance, throttling rules, and coverage before an emergency.
  • Mistake: expecting every router to fail over automatically. Verify dual-WAN or cellular support, configure detection, and perform a real unplug test.
  • Mistake: treating cellular as guaranteed independence. Account for tower outages, congestion, backhaul failures, and local power loss.
  • Mistake: moving an obstructed terminal unsafely. Use the app’s obstruction tool and obtain professional assistance for hazardous work.
  • Mistake: assuming an FCC technology category means service is orderable. Check exact-address availability with providers.

Bottom line

When Starlink stops working, identify the failed layer before choosing a remedy. Restore power or cabling problems locally, address obstructions through the app, and confirm account or service status. For an independent internet path, use a phone hotspot for emergencies, a dedicated 4G/5G hotspot or carrier backup for regular resilience, or a configured dual-WAN router for automatic switching. Add wired or fixed wireless service when it is available, and use a UPS only to bridge electrical outages. Test the complete setup before you need it, because coverage, plans, equipment compatibility, and failover behavior are location- and model-specific.
