A digital game, a subscription entitlement, a storefront download and an online service are different things. When a gaming company changes or closes one of them, the result can range from “nothing changes” to losing multiplayer, losing access to a subscription catalog, needing to buy the game again, or being unable to launch the game at all. The outcome depends on the title’s license, whether it can run offline, which account authenticates it and what the provider’s notice promises for your region.
Use the game-specific rules rather than assuming that every purchase survives—or that every game disappears. The sections below explain each shutdown type, show what commonly remains, and give you a practical way to protect saves and evaluate your library.

Start with the access model
Before predicting what a shutdown means, identify how you receive each game. A single account may contain all of these models at once:
- Separately purchased download: You paid for a license to a particular product through a store. Continued downloading, account access and activation still depend on the store, publisher and the product’s terms.
- Subscription entitlement: Your right to play lasts only while the subscription and the game’s inclusion last. Canceling or allowing the subscription to expire normally removes access to games obtained only through that plan.
- Cloud-streamed game: The provider runs the game on its servers and sends video to your device. If that platform closes, a local installation cannot recreate the service.
- Online-dependent game: The game may be installed locally but still require a server for login, matchmaking, licenses, user-generated content or a shared world.
- Offline-capable game: A campaign or other modes can run after an initial installation and authentication, although some online features may disappear.
Microsoft’s Gaming Web Purchase Service terms illustrate why the store page is not the whole contract: separate Microsoft or partner terms can supply the license, and support is provided by the party that owns the digital product. Read the terms attached to the individual game and account, not just the storefront’s general policy.

What changes, what may stop and what may remain
| Change | What may stop | What may remain | Verify before relying on it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subscription ends or removes a title | Access to games and included in-game items supplied only by the plan | A separately purchased copy; possibly saved progress if the provider keeps it | Renewal date, catalog-removal notice, separate ownership, save export and cross-progression |
| Digital store stops selling games | New purchases, new add-ons or sometimes new account transactions | Previously acquired downloads, if the platform continues account access and re-downloads | Re-download policy, device compatibility, payment changes and account status |
| Game servers close | Multiplayer, matchmaking, leaderboards, shared creations, events or the whole game | Offline modes and local content, if the title supports them | Whether online authentication is mandatory and the exact functions listed in the shutdown notice |
| Cloud gaming platform closes | Streaming access, platform-specific purchases and platform saves | Publisher-account entitlements or transferred progress, only where explicitly supported | Transfer eligibility, destination platform, linked account and whether a second purchase is required |
| Publisher changes account or license rules | Connected features or account-based activation | Local files and offline play, depending on the title | Current license, regional rules, account standing and offline-activation limits |
When a subscription ends or a game leaves the catalog
A subscription is a time-limited permission, not the same thing as buying every included game. Ubisoft’s Canadian Ubisoft+ terms, consulted October 13, 2026, say that access to Ubisoft+ services and games ends after the current subscription period unless the game was purchased separately. The same terms cover some in-game purchases and benefits, which can also become unavailable when the subscription entitlement ends.
If you cancel your plan
Cancellation generally stops the next renewal while leaving access until the paid period expires. The exact date is the service’s stated end date, not necessarily the day you click Cancel. Downloaded files may remain on your drive, but the launcher can refuse to start them once the entitlement is inactive.
If the provider removes a game
Catalog rights can expire without the entire subscription ending. A title can disappear from the catalog, stop being downloadable to new subscribers, or become unavailable in one country while remaining elsewhere. A separately purchased license is the key distinction: if you bought the game outside the subscription, that purchase follows its own terms.

What happens to saves and purchases inside the subscription
Ubisoft’s terms say the company may choose to save progress or in-game purchases for a later renewal; preservation is not guaranteed. Treat cloud saves, cosmetics and consumables as at risk unless the provider explicitly documents retention. Export saves where the game supports it, and check whether the same publisher account will be used if you later buy the game.

When a digital storefront changes or closes
A storefront shutdown affects commerce and distribution first. It does not automatically terminate every license already granted, but it can remove the ability to buy games, add-ons or currency and can eventually affect downloads or activation.
PlayStation’s notices about purchase changes for the PS3 and PS Vita stores say players could continue playing already-owned content, subject to each game’s online features and service availability. Previously purchased content remained downloadable for the foreseeable future. That wording is deliberately narrower than a permanent guarantee: it depends on continued platform support and the game’s own servers.
Check these four functions separately
- Launch: Can the installed game start with the console or PC disconnected?
- Re-download: Does the account still show the title in its library, and is the download server operating?
- Updates and add-ons: Can patches, expansions and purchased content still be obtained?
- Online features: Are the game’s servers, account login and user-created content still available?
A store can stop selling a game while all four functions continue. Conversely, a title can remain listed in your library yet fail because its separate authentication or gameplay server has closed.

When a game’s servers shut down
Server retirement is title-specific. The publisher’s notice should state the date, time zone and functions affected; “online services ending” does not by itself mean the whole game is deleted.

Offline campaign survives
PlayStation identifies LittleBigPlanet 3 as an example where online services and access to other players’ creations became unavailable while the offline campaign remained playable. Gran Turismo Sport retained offline portions, including purchased add-ons, after its online features ended.
The whole game becomes unplayable
GUNS UP! is the contrasting case in PlayStation’s server information: it requires an online connection, so ending the online service makes the game unplayable. A local installation or physical disc cannot supply the missing server.
Partial losses are common
Other titles may retain solo missions but lose matchmaking, leaderboards, seasonal events, cloud inventories, shared worlds or user-generated levels. Downloaded content can remain on a drive while the account service that validates it no longer responds. Read the notice for the specific title rather than inferring the result from another game by the same publisher.
When a cloud gaming platform shuts down
Cloud services combine several separate assets: the streaming session, the platform transaction, the save data and the publisher’s own game account. Closing one does not automatically move the others.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

What the Stadia shutdown demonstrates
Google’s Stadia shutdown FAQ said Google offered refunds for hardware bought through Google Store and for games and add-ons bought through Stadia Store. Stadia Pro subscriptions were generally not refundable under that FAQ, although eligible subscribers could keep accessing Pro games without further charges during the wind-down; charges from September 29, 2022 onward were refundable. Google expected the majority of transaction refunds to be processed by January 18, 2023. Those dates and policies belonged to that specific shutdown and are not a promise for another service.
The FAQ also said some publishers provided ways to transfer game data to other platforms, but warned that a player might have to purchase the game on the destination platform to play it there. A publisher-account save transfer therefore differs from transferring a platform purchase.
What to verify in any cloud closure
- Whether the publisher account, rather than the cloud platform, owns your entitlement.
- Which games qualify for progress transfer and which destination platforms are supported.
- Whether the transfer is automatic, requires linking accounts or has a deadline.
- Whether you must buy the game again, and whether add-ons or virtual currency move with the save.
- How long you can download or export saves before the platform disappears.
How to audit one game before a shutdown
Use this sequence for every important title. Save screenshots or copies of notices because policies can change during a wind-down.
- Classify the entitlement. Mark the game as separately purchased, subscription-only, downloaded from a store, or streamed exclusively.
- Test offline launch. Disconnect the device from the internet after installation and try the campaign or other claimed offline mode. Reconnect afterward so the test does not interrupt a required activation process.
- Read the title-specific notice. Record the announced shutdown date, time zone and the exact features being removed.
- Inspect account links. Note the publisher account, platform account and any third-party login. Cross-progression usually requires the same publisher identity on the destination platform.
- Export supported data. Use the game’s official save-copy, account-download or transfer tools. Do not assume that copying a local folder captures cloud inventory or server-side progress.
- Check the destination cost and license. Confirm whether a second purchase is required and whether your edition includes the same expansions.
- Review remedies. Read the provider’s refund, cancellation and account-closure terms for your country and product. A historical refund program does not establish a general entitlement.
Preparing your library for a service change
- Download purchased games and required updates while the storefront still operates.
- Launch each important title online at least once, then test the documented offline mode.
- Keep enough local storage for installers, patches and saves; a disc or downloaded file is useful only if the game does not require a live service.
- Export saves through supported methods and verify the exported file can be recognized before deleting the original.
- Capture receipts, order numbers, edition names and linked-account IDs for any refund or transfer request.
- Watch the publisher’s support page for a final transfer deadline, regional exception or change in server scope.
- Avoid spending new money on subscription-only items shortly before a planned closure unless the provider states how they will be refunded or preserved.
Refunds, transfers and physical copies: what is not guaranteed
Refunds are policy decisions tied to a provider, product, region and event. Stadia’s hardware and game refunds show what one company offered; they do not create an industry-wide rule. Subscription fees, virtual currency and add-ons can have different treatment from a base game.

Save transfers are equally specific. A publisher may move progress while leaving the license behind, or may support only certain games and destinations. Ask whether achievements, expansions, characters, purchases and competitive rankings are included.
A physical disc can preserve game files, but it cannot recreate a discontinued matchmaking service, account server or cloud-hosted world. Likewise, local storage and networking equipment do not replace a provider’s authentication endpoint. Physical media can improve your ability to reinstall an offline-capable title; it cannot guarantee playability for an online-dependent one.
A decision framework for your next purchase
For a game you expect to keep for years, ask these questions before paying:
- Can the main mode run without an internet connection after installation?
- Does the game require recurring account verification?
- Are saves stored locally, in a publisher cloud, or only on the game server?
- Is the purchase tied to a platform storefront, a publisher account, or both?
- Does the publisher describe a shutdown or end-of-service process?
- Can you export progress or move it to another platform?
The answers do not predict the future, but they reveal the number of independent services that must remain available. Fewer dependencies generally mean more ways to keep playing after a company changes its store or subscription.
The practical rule
Do not ask only, “Did I buy the game?” Ask, “Which permission and which server does this particular mode need?” A separately purchased, offline-capable download can survive a store change; a subscription game normally ends with the paid period; an online-only title can stop working when its server closes; and a cloud-streamed purchase may require a new copy elsewhere. The provider’s current, region-specific notice and the game’s own offline and account requirements determine your result.
