Your data may be seen live, recorded, analyzed and retained when a humanoid robot operates in your home or workplace. The exact footprint depends on the provider, the robot’s sensors, whether a remote person controls it, and the privacy terms attached to your booking or deployment. There is no single industry-wide rule.
A rental can generate room video, depth or spatial maps, telemetry, operator commands, account details and service records. Before allowing a robot inside, identify every enabled sensor, who can access its data, whether recordings train models, how long each category is kept, and how you can stop collection or request deletion.
What data can a humanoid robot collect?
A humanoid robot’s data footprint is broader than the images visible in a marketing demonstration. Depending on its configuration and service, it can include information about the environment, the robot’s operation and the people who arranged the rental.

Camera video and images
Cameras may capture rooms, people, documents, screens, personal possessions and activity taking place near the robot. A live feed and a recording are separate questions: a provider might stream video to an operator, store it afterward, or do both.

Audio and microphones
Microphones are not automatically active, but you must verify their state in the contract or device settings. Tau Robotics’ residential cleaning policy says its microphones are disabled and that audio from the home is not captured, transmitted, recorded, stored or listened to. That is a provider-specific promise, not a general property of humanoid rentals.
Depth, spatial and location data
Depth sensors and cameras can produce maps of rooms, distances, obstacles and movement paths. Commercial agreements may also cover location tracking of individuals. Even where a provider does not retain ordinary video, a spatial map can reveal the layout of a home, office or customer area.
Telemetry and control logs
Telemetry can include the robot’s position, sensor status, errors, performance and network information. If a person drives the robot remotely, commands and actions may be logged as well. These records can show what the operator attempted, when it happened and how the machine responded.
Booking, account and service records
Names, contact details, payment or booking information, access instructions, Wi-Fi details and maintenance records can be held separately from sensor data. A platform that arranges rentals may retain account and verification information even when it does not operate the robot itself.

Can a remote person watch or control the robot?
Do not assume that “humanoid” means autonomous. Tau Robotics’ Terms of Service, last updated July 27, 2026, state: “The robot is not autonomous. A person is controlling it.” Its cleaning service policy says a trained remote human operator sees the home through the robot’s cameras during the visit.
This creates a direct-access question for renters: who can see the feed while the robot is moving? The answer may include an assigned operator, supervisors, engineers, support staff or cloud-service personnel, depending on the provider’s systems. Ask whether access is continuous, event-triggered or limited to a particular task, and whether staff access is logged.
Tau says people present at a visit can ask the operator to stop. Its policy also makes bedroom and bathroom access opt-in. Those controls are useful examples, but they should not be treated as standard protections for other services.

Collection and secondary use are different decisions. A provider may need video to perform a cleaning task, then use stored footage for model training, product improvement, analytics or another purpose.

Tau Robotics’ service privacy policy says: “We record what those cameras see. We use that footage to run the cleaning and to train the AI models that we hope will eventually do the job without a human operator.” The same policy says recorded video, robot telemetry and operator commands are used to train its vision-language-action models.
HumanoidX Technologies’ Master Robotics Services, Rental, Deployment & Technology Agreement, version 1.1 prepared in July 2026, takes a different contractual approach: the executed order is supposed to specify data categories, purposes, processing roles, retention, locations, subprocessors and enabled sensors or recording functions. It states that audio recording, video recording, facial recognition, biometric identification, location tracking of individuals, profiling and lead collection are disabled by default unless expressly enabled in the order with appropriate safeguards. An order can change those defaults, so review the signed schedule rather than relying on the template alone.
How long might the data be kept?
Retention often differs by data type. Tau Robotics’ published terms, last updated July 27, 2026, give concrete examples:

“Indefinitely” does not mean deletion is impossible, but it does mean you should make a deletion request rather than expect automatic erasure. Ask whether deletion covers backups, derived maps, model-training copies, support tickets and subcontractor systems, or only the primary account record.

Residential service and commercial deployment are different
A home visit, an office pilot and a marketplace booking can involve different parties and legal roles. Comparing them without reading their documents can produce the wrong answer.
Residential cleaning service
Tau’s example combines remote human operation, continuous first-person video, telemetry and operator commands. Its policy addresses room access, microphone status, retention and deletion. Anyone in the home should be told that the visit involves a camera feed and should be given a way to request that the operator stop.
Commercial rental or deployment
For a workplace, the executed order may control which sensors are enabled, the purposes of processing, the controller and processor roles, storage locations, subprocessors and incident obligations. HumanoidX’s agreement is a checklist for those subjects; it is not evidence that every supplier uses the same defaults.

Marketplace booking
Rental Bots says it connects hosts and renters and that each rental is contracted between those parties. Its platform policy covers account and booking records, verification, security and platform retention. That notice does not establish what a particular robot records while operating. You must inspect the host’s device configuration and service terms as well as the marketplace policy.
Manufacturer policy
Boston Dynamics’ general privacy policy points readers to product-specific notices for robot image and acoustic data. A manufacturer’s general policy therefore cannot replace the rental provider’s terms, the robot’s configuration or the signed deployment contract.

Request written answers, ideally in the booking confirmation or order, to each of these questions:
- Who operates the robot? Is it autonomous, supervised on site, or remotely driven by a human? Can an operator see the live feed?
- Which sensors are enabled? List every camera, microphone, depth sensor, lidar or other spatial sensor, location feature and diagnostic log.
- Is data streamed, recorded or both? Ask whether live access is continuous, whether recordings begin automatically, and whether still images or clips are extracted.
- Who can access the data? Identify operators, engineers, customer support, subcontractors, hosting providers and other service providers.
- Is the data reused? Ask specifically about model training, product improvement, analytics, advertising, safety review and human quality checks.
- What is retained, and for how long? Require a retention period for each category, including video, maps, telemetry, commands, account information and backups.
- How do deletion requests work? Ask where to submit the request, what proof is required, what gets deleted and when you receive confirmation.
- Where is processing performed? Request storage and processing locations, cross-border transfer details and the identity of relevant subprocessors.
- What happens to other people captured? Clarify notice and rights for household members, visitors, employees, contractors and customers.
- Can you limit the robot? Confirm whether you can disable microphones, block rooms or zones, pause the robot immediately or end remote access.
- What happens after an incident? Check notification deadlines, investigation responsibilities, evidence preservation and assistance with affected individuals.
Compare rental options by privacy controls, not appearance
Two robots that look similar can create very different exposure. Use the same questions for each quote and record the answers in a comparison sheet.

Practical steps to reduce exposure
Before the robot arrives
- Read the current privacy policy, terms and order schedule; save a copy of the version shown at booking.
- Remove sensitive papers, credentials, medical information and unnecessary personal items from areas the robot will enter.
- Designate rooms or zones that are off-limits and confirm the restriction in writing.
- Tell household members, employees and visitors that a robot may transmit or record environmental data.
- Do not provide Wi-Fi credentials unless they are required; if they are required, ask how they are protected and deleted.
During operation
- Use the provider’s pause or stop mechanism if an unexpected person, document or activity enters view.
- Keep children, guests and customers away from the robot unless they understand the recording and access arrangement.
- Ask the operator to stop before moving the robot into a bedroom, bathroom, meeting room or other restricted area.
- Watch for indicators showing active cameras, microphones or remote control, and report any mismatch with the agreed configuration.
After the visit
- Request deletion promptly if the terms allow it, specifying video, telemetry, command logs, maps and account-linked records.
- Ask for written confirmation of what was deleted and what must be retained for a stated legal or service reason.
- Revoke temporary network access, badges or building permissions that were issued for the deployment.
- Record any incident, including the time, location, people involved and the provider’s response.
What to do when the provider’s answer is unclear
Do not rely on a sales representative’s verbal assurance that “the robot does not store anything.” Ask for the exact policy section, device setting or order clause. “Not stored” may still mean viewed live; “anonymous” may still include identifiable room layouts; and “deleted” may exclude backups or model-training datasets.
If the provider cannot identify enabled sensors, data recipients, retention periods or a deletion process, treat that uncertainty as a deployment risk. For a workplace, pause the rollout until the order and privacy schedule assign responsibilities for notice, access requests, incidents and subcontractors.
Bottom line
Renting a humanoid robot can mean inviting a remotely operated camera system into a private or commercial space. The safest assumption is that environmental video, spatial information, telemetry and control logs may be generated unless the contract and configuration say otherwise. Tau Robotics demonstrates how extensive collection and long retention can be, while HumanoidX demonstrates why an order must specify sensors, purposes, roles, locations and subprocessors. Marketplace and manufacturer notices provide additional context but do not answer what a particular robot will record. Get those details in writing, restrict rooms and sensors, notify everyone who may be captured, and make deletion and incident commitments part of the booking.
