If an AI griefbot closes, your conversations might remain downloadable, become inaccessible, be transferred to another operator, or be deleted. There is no industry-wide rule. The outcome depends on the provider’s terms, its shutdown process, and whether you retrieve a copy before access ends. Treat service access, an export, and server-side retention as three separate questions.
What a shutdown can change
A shutdown usually removes or changes the interface you use to revisit conversations. That does not, by itself, tell you what happened to the underlying data. Messages, memory summaries, uploaded photographs, audio recordings, generated files, model prompts, synthetic voice data, backups, and copies held by processors may all follow different retention schedules.
| Question | Possible outcome | Why it is separate |
|---|---|---|
| Can I still sign in? | The account remains open temporarily, is placed in read-only mode, or disappears immediately. | A closed website can block access even when files still exist on company systems. |
| Can I obtain an export? | You may have a self-service download, a support-assisted export, or no practical way to retrieve the data. | Export availability and timing are operational choices, not automatic consequences of a privacy policy. |
| Will the company delete my data? | Data may be deleted, retained for a stated period, transferred to a successor, or kept in backups and processor systems. | A provider’s user-deletion procedure may not describe an unplanned closure. |
Do not infer that a conversation is safe because the provider calls it private, or that it is gone because the app no longer loads. Only a current policy, a written provider response, or an actual export can answer the relevant question for your account.

Why ordinary deletion policies may not cover a closure
Terms commonly explain what happens when you delete an account or remove a digital companion while the service is operating. A business failure, acquisition, product retirement, or emergency shutdown is a different event. Look for language covering closure, transfer to a new operator, notice periods, export rights, backups, and third-party processors.

AIGriefBot’s privacy policy, dated September 16, 2026, says, “Content is kept while your account is active.” It also describes controls for downloading content as plain files, editing or deleting memory notes, and permanently deleting a Companion’s conversations, uploads, memories, and synthetic voice. Those are that provider’s published claims and apply to its stated controls; they are not an industry-wide promise that every service will export or erase data after closing.
Retention can also differ between the griefbot operator and companies processing its infrastructure. An Anthropic commercial-product article dated July 1, 2026 describes different handling by product and circumstance. That illustrates why you should ask which systems and processors hold your files, but it does not establish a retention rule for a particular griefbot.
If the service may close, act while your account works
The most reliable recovery plan is to make your own copy before a shutdown deadline. Work through these steps in order.
Recommended Free Tools
- Sign in and inventory the account. List every conversation, memory or profile note, uploaded photograph, audio file, generated image, recording, and other attachment you want to keep. Some services expose these items on separate screens.
- Use the built-in export. Check account settings, privacy controls, or a conversation menu for labels such as Export, Download, Download data, or Request my data. Do not assume that an export of chat text includes attachments or memory notes.
- Open and inspect the downloaded files. Confirm that text files are readable, audio plays, images open, and filenames or timestamps are understandable. If an archive contains several folders, check each one rather than stopping after the first document.
- Make a second copy. Keep the original export unchanged and copy it to a separate location you control. A portable external SSD is one optional local-storage choice after downloading; it cannot retrieve files that remained only on a closed server.
- Record provenance. Note the service name, account identifier, download date, and any export version or support ticket. Keep the provider’s confirmation emails with the files.
- Ask the provider for a deadline in writing. Use the account email address and request a complete export if self-service tools are missing. Ask when sign-in ends and whether read-only access will remain.
What to ask support before access ends
A short, precise request is more useful than asking generally whether your data is “safe.” Ask the operator to identify each category of data and each stage of the shutdown.
Subject: Request for complete account export and shutdown timeline
I am requesting a complete copy of the data associated with this account, including conversation text, memory notes, uploaded and generated files, audio or synthetic-voice files, metadata, and any other account content.
Please confirm:
1. The export format and whether attachments are included;
2. The last date and time I can sign in or retrieve files;
3. Whether the account will become read-only before closure;
4. Whether closure or deletion is automatic, or requires a separate request;
5. How long live systems and backups retain the data;
6. Which third-party processors or successor operators receive it; and
7. How to request deletion, including any legal or operational exceptions.
Please reply in writing and identify my support ticket.
Save the reply. A support statement about your account is more useful than an undated help-page summary, particularly when the published terms do not mention a shutdown.

Preserve more than the visible chat window
Griefbot conversations often depend on material that is easy to overlook. Preserve the original files and their relationships rather than saving only screenshots.
| Data to preserve | What to check |
|---|---|
| Conversation text | Look for full threads, dates, speaker labels, edits, and deleted-message indicators. A web-page printout may omit hidden turns or system-generated context. |
| Memory notes and profiles | Export persistent facts, preferences, summaries, and user-edited memories separately if the service presents them separately. |
| Uploads | Download the original photographs, documents, audio, and video, not only the chatbot’s description of them. |
| Generated material | Keep generated images, recordings, avatars, and synthetic voice files in their supplied formats. The interface may not be the only copy. |
| Metadata | Retain filenames, timestamps, conversation IDs, and any export manifest. They can help you understand ordering later. |
Keep the first export untouched. If you later convert files for easier reading, work from a duplicate so the provider’s original representation remains available.

User-requested deletion
When a user removes an account or a Companion, the provider may define which records are deleted and when. AIGriefBot’s published controls say a user can permanently delete a Companion’s conversations, uploads, memories, and synthetic voice. That description concerns the provider’s own deletion workflow while the service is available.
Planned product retirement
A planned retirement may provide a notice, a final export window, or migration to another product. Read the notice for exact dates and for exclusions such as backups, fraud records, billing records, or files held by processors.
Unplanned shutdown or insolvency
An abrupt closure may cut off the interface before users can export anything. Data might remain on live systems or backups, but a user may have no practical route to obtain it. Do not assume that a provider must preserve or erase every copy; legal duties and contractual outcomes vary by jurisdiction and agreement, and no jurisdiction-specific conclusion is established here.

A reported closure example, with important limits
Afterlife AI, a competitor, reported that HereAfter AI displayed a 2026 farewell notice directing account holders to support@hereafter.ai. Afterlife AI also said the web presence later returned an error and that HereAfter had not published a shutdown date or data-deletion date. The original notice was no longer available in the search results described in that report, and the account came from a commercially interested source. Treat these details as attributed secondary reporting, not independent confirmation of the service’s current status or of what happened to every account.
The example demonstrates the practical risk: a support address or farewell message may be the only retrieval path, and it may disappear. Exporting early is safer than waiting for a definitive public announcement.

Try the provider’s remaining channels
Use the last known support address, account email, privacy-request channel, and any successor company named in a notice. Include your account identifier, approximate dates, and a request for a copy of the data rather than asking for a general explanation.
Check your own devices and backups
Search browser downloads, phone photo libraries, screen recordings, cloud-drive folders, email attachments, and device backups. These may contain partial conversations or source files even when the service no longer responds. Label recovered files as partial if you cannot verify that they are complete.
Separate recovery from deletion
If your priority is to obtain a copy, say so before requesting deletion. A deletion request can conflict with a recovery request, and the provider may need to verify ownership first. Ask the operator to explain the order of operations in writing.

Consent and a humane ending
Technical retention is only part of the problem. The June 2026 Journal of Responsible Technology article “Principles of consent and non-addiction in AI grief bots” argues that consent should apply to the creation, operation, and deletion of a griefbot. It also calls for clear labeling and safeguards against manipulation or unhealthy dependency.
Those are scholarly principles, not proof that every service implements them or that they are binding law. They do provide a useful standard for evaluating shutdown notices: users should be told what is ending, what will happen to their data, whether another operator will receive it, and how to choose deletion or preservation. A notice that simply removes access without explaining those choices leaves an important part of the relationship unresolved.
If the history has strong emotional significance, ask a trusted person to sit with you while you perform the practical export steps. This is a support strategy, not a clinical response protocol; the available sources do not establish medical guidance for griefbot shutdowns.
A simple decision framework
- You can still sign in: export conversations and every separate file now, inspect the result, and make a second copy.
- You can sign in but export is unclear: download manually where possible and send the written request above before the announced deadline.
- The site is read-only: capture the remaining text and use support or privacy channels for attachments and memory data.
- The site is offline: contact the provider and any named successor, search your own backups, and treat any recovered material as potentially incomplete.
- You want deletion: ask whether closure already triggered deletion, what remains in backups or processors, and whether a separate verified request is required.
The key distinction is simple: access can end before retention does, and retention can end without giving you a usable export. Plan for all three outcomes rather than relying on the app’s availability as evidence about your data.
