Usually, your broadband contract does not end when another company buys your provider. Ofcom says the service will normally continue and the existing contract should generally transfer to the company taking over. A network migration is also not automatically a new customer switch. Your position changes only if the provider varies your contractual terms, asks you to sign a replacement agreement, or you decide to move to another provider yourself.

The practical answer depends on the notice you receive, the exact term being changed, your minimum contract period and whether the new service uses a different network. This guide explains how to tell those situations apart under UK consumer guidance.

Takeover, contract change and network migration are different events

News that a broadband company has been bought can sound as though every customer must start again. That is not Ofcom’s general position. When another company takes over a provider’s service, Ofcom’s guidance says the existing service will usually continue and the existing contract should generally transfer. Ownership can change without changing the price, minimum term, speed promise, billing arrangements or other terms you accepted.

A contract change is a separate event. It occurs when the provider proposes to alter a contractual term, such as a price, allowance, service feature or other obligation. The notice and the wording of the proposed change determine what rights you have; the fact that ownership changed is not, by itself, a penalty-free cancellation trigger.

A network migration describes a technical change in how the service reaches your home. Your provider may move customers between wholesale networks while continuing to serve them under the same retail agreement. That is different from you choosing a new provider and entering a new arrangement. Ask which of these events is happening before you agree to anything or buy equipment.

What Ofcom says after a provider takeover

Your existing service normally carries on

Ofcom’s page “What to do if your broadband or landline provider goes out of business,” published 13 February 2026 and updated 15 September 2026, says customers will usually continue receiving service when another company takes over. It also says the existing contract should generally transfer. This means you should not assume that a takeover cancels your minimum term or requires a new signature.

Read the communication from the provider carefully. It should identify the company responsible for your service, explain whether billing or account access will change, and state any proposed variation. Keep the message, the date received and your current contract documents. Those records matter if the provider later says that a term changed or that a cancellation charge is due.

What has not been established by an acquisition announcement

An announcement that one corporate group intends to acquire another does not prove that your individual contract has changed. It also does not establish that the transaction has completed, that every customer is affected in the same way or that a new minimum term applies. Treat the announcement and the customer notice as separate documents.

The TalkTalk announcement example

On 5 October 2026, Ofcom published advice after BT Group announced it would acquire TalkTalk Group. Ofcom said TalkTalk customers remained TalkTalk customers and that there would be no immediate change to price, contract or access to billing. It said customers should be able to continue using landline, broadband and pay TV during and after the transition, with BT contacting affected customers if anything changed in future.

Ofcom’s advice included this deal-specific statement: “There will be no change to your price, contract or how you access billing.” That is advice about the announced transaction at that date, not a universal promise covering every acquisition. The announcement should not be described as proof that the acquisition has completed unless a later, authoritative update confirms completion.

When a term change gives you a right to leave

The one-month notice and penalty-free exit rule

Ofcom’s “Contracts” guidance, published 24 July 2023 and updated 1 May 2026, says phone and broadband providers can change contract terms but must give at least one month’s notice and a right to exit without penalty when the change does not benefit the customer. The notice should make clear what is changing, when it takes effect and how to exercise the exit right.

Whether you can leave without an early termination charge therefore turns on the specific change. A takeover alone is not enough. If a provider keeps your agreement intact while changing its corporate ownership, the ordinary minimum-term rules still apply. If it sends a notice changing a term in a way that disadvantages you, assess that notice against the Ofcom requirements.

Exceptions to the exit right

Ofcom identifies three broad exceptions:

  • A change exclusively to your benefit.
  • A purely administrative change that has no negative effect on you.
  • A change directly imposed by law.

For example, a correction to an administrative detail that does not worsen your position is not treated in the same way as a price increase or a reduction in an included feature. Do not rely on a general statement that “terms are changing”; identify the actual effect on your service and obligations.

If the notice is unclear or missing

Contact the provider and ask for the precise contractual clause, the effective date and the reason it considers the change exempt from a penalty-free exit. If you believe the notice was late, incomplete or unfair, make a formal complaint through the provider’s published complaints process. Ofcom advises customers to complain when a change was not properly notified or when contract wording appears unfair or unclear. Keep copies of correspondence and note the complaint reference.

What a network change means for your line

Migration under the existing agreement

A provider can change the underlying network arrangement without asking you to become a customer of a different retail company. In that case, the provider should explain the practical effects, such as any service interruption, revised technical limits or equipment requirement. Unless the provider also varies your contract or asks you to accept a replacement agreement, the network work does not automatically reset your minimum term.

A customer-initiated move to another network

Ofcom’s “Switching broadband provider” guidance, updated 25 August 2026, deals with a customer switching service. If you choose a provider that uses a different network, the new provider should explain whether you need an engineer visit, a new router or other equipment, and any setup steps. Those requirements relate to the destination service; they do not establish that a takeover has forced you to replace your equipment.

Questions to put to the provider

  • Am I staying with the same retail provider and contract?
  • Is this a technical migration or a request for me to place a new order?
  • Will my price, speed, data allowance, minimum term or other term change?
  • What date does any change take effect?
  • Will my current router continue to work?
  • Is an engineer visit required, and who pays for it?
  • If I decline, what cancellation or early termination charge would apply?

Should you stay or switch?

If you receive a notice, compare the two practical paths rather than assuming that leaving is automatically free.

Decision point Stay with the service Leave or switch
Contract basis Confirm that the existing agreement continues and record any unchanged terms. Establish whether a qualifying term change gives a penalty-free exit; otherwise check the minimum term and early termination charge.
Cost Check the current price and the date of any stated future change. Add any termination charge, activation fee, installation cost and destination-service price.
Continuity Ask whether the migration has a planned outage or requires action from you. Confirm the start date and how the old service will end so you do not create an avoidable gap.
Equipment Use the existing equipment unless the provider says it must be replaced. Ask the new provider about router compatibility, an engineer visit and other setup requirements before ordering.
New terms Read any variation notice and the revised contract wording. Read the new provider’s minimum term, price after any initial period and service conditions.

Do not cancel first and investigate later. A customer who is still inside a minimum period may owe an early termination charge even when the corporate owner has changed. Conversely, if a provider has made a disadvantageous contractual change and supplied the required notice and exit route, the terms of that route should be confirmed before you submit a cancellation.

How switching works and where charges appear

Check your current status

  1. Find your contract start date, minimum-term end date and the services included.
  2. Ask your current provider for the early termination charge that would apply on a specific cancellation date.
  3. Obtain the proposed new provider’s total price, minimum term, activation arrangements and equipment requirements.
  4. Compare the total cost over the period you expect to keep the service, not only the first bill.

Use One Touch Switch information correctly

Ofcom describes One Touch Switch as a process in which you contact the provider you want to join. Its switching guidance says customers using that process should be told about applicable charges before the switch. Read that information before authorising the order, and save the quote or confirmation showing what was disclosed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for a different network

When the destination service uses another network, ask when the new connection will be activated, whether the old service stops automatically and whether an engineer must visit. Do not buy a router, modem, Wi-Fi extender or cable simply because you heard that a network is changing. Equipment needs depend on the actual service and instructions from the provider.

Common situations and the correct response

“My provider was bought, so I want to cancel for free.”

Ownership change alone does not establish a penalty-free cancellation right. First check whether your contract terms changed and whether the provider gave a notice meeting Ofcom’s requirements. If no qualifying change occurred, ask for the ordinary early termination charge before deciding.

“The provider says the network is changing and sends a new contract.”

Read whether the document is an updated explanation of the existing service or a replacement agreement. A new minimum term, different price or changed service promise is material. Ask why acceptance is required, what happens if you decline and whether a penalty-free exit is available for the specific variation.

“I was told to buy a new router immediately.”

Ask the provider to confirm in writing whether the existing router is incompatible, whether replacement equipment is supplied, and whether the request relates to a customer-initiated switch. Do not infer a requirement from a general network announcement.

“My bill or account login changed after the takeover.”

Verify the new billing contact through a trusted statement or the provider’s established support channel. A change in billing access can be an administrative transition, but check that the amount, payment date and contractual terms remain the same. Report any unexplained difference promptly.

“Service stopped during the transition.”

Report the fault immediately and record the outage time, reference number and promised restoration date. Ask whether the interruption is a planned migration activity or a service fault. The takeover does not remove the provider’s responsibility to communicate about the service you are receiving.

A records checklist before you decide

  • Save the takeover or network-change notice, including its date and attachments.
  • Download your current contract, price information and latest bills.
  • Write down the minimum-term end date and the quoted early termination charge.
  • List every term the provider says will change, with the effective date.
  • Ask for equipment, installation and outage details in writing.
  • Keep complaint references and the names or team identifiers of people you contact.
  • Do not agree to a new minimum term until you have compared the complete costs and service conditions.

What is and is not known about future deals

There is no established market-wide statistic showing how often broadband contracts transfer after acquisitions. The TalkTalk example is an announcement-specific case, not a rate or prediction for other transactions. Deal terms, completion status and customer communications can change, so rely on the latest notice from your provider and current Ofcom guidance when a particular takeover is announced.

For UK residential customers, the safest rule is to identify the event first: continued service under transferred ownership, a contractual variation, or a customer-chosen switch. Only the second category may activate the one-month notice and penalty-free exit framework, and the exceptions still matter. The third category brings ordinary switching checks, including minimum-term charges and destination-network setup.
