When a bank is sold or merges, your deposit account usually moves to the acquiring bank, while your loan remains an enforceable contract. Keep making loan payments on schedule, follow any new payment or account instructions in the official notice, verify direct deposits and automatic debits, and check how the change affects FDIC insurance. A routine acquisition is different from an FDIC-insolved bank failure, so identify which situation you are facing first.
First, determine what kind of transaction occurred
The phrase “bank sold” can describe two very different events. In an ordinary merger or acquisition, one operating bank assumes another bank’s customers and systems under a planned conversion. In a failure, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) closes the failed institution as receiver and arranges either a purchase-and-assumption transaction or a direct payoff of insured deposits. The notices, timing and payment mechanics differ.
Ordinary merger or acquisition
The acquiring bank generally becomes the owner and service provider for transferred deposit accounts. Your account may keep the same number, or the notice may provide a new account number, routing number, online-banking process, branch arrangement, fee schedule or interest rate. The conversion date and any temporary service outage should be stated in the bank’s customer notice. Use that notice, rather than assumptions based on another bank’s conversion, for the exact instructions.

In a failed-bank purchase and assumption, the assuming bank takes over insured deposits and the failed bank’s customers “immediately become depositors of the assuming bank and have access to their insured funds,” according to FDIC depositor guidance. If no institution assumes the deposits, the FDIC pays insured balances directly, normally by check up to the applicable insurance limit. This direct-payoff route can affect outstanding checks and payment requests presented after the failed bank closes.

What happens to checking, savings and other deposit accounts
Your balance and account generally transfer
In a normal acquisition, the assuming bank takes over the transferred deposit accounts and servicing. Your balance does not disappear because the institution changed owners. The conversion can still alter practical details: a new debit card, checks, routing number, account number, mobile-app login, branch network, statement format or fee schedule. Read the complete notice for the effective date and any action required before that date.
Interest rates and fees can change under the deposit contract
Deposit rates, credit-card rates and other account terms are not automatically frozen by a sale. The new bank may change a deposit rate, fee or other term when the account agreement allows the change and required advance notice is provided. In a failed-bank acquisition, the FDIC specifically states that the acquiring bank may change the interest rate on acquired deposits. An insured depositor who dislikes the new rate may generally withdraw insured funds without an early-withdrawal penalty in that situation.
Direct deposits and recurring withdrawals
Payroll, Social Security and other electronic credits often continue through a conversion, but you should verify the first payment after the change. FDIC guidance advises customers with recurring automatic payments to check whether account information must be revised. A new routing or account number can affect rent, utilities, subscriptions, loan debits and transfers. Compare the old and new details in the official notice with the information held by each payor or biller, and update only through a verified channel.

Checks, deposit slips and card access
When deposits are assumed in a failed-bank transaction, the assuming bank typically accepts the failed bank’s checks and deposit slips for a short period and supplies replacement materials. A direct FDIC payoff is different: checks or payment requests presented after closure may be returned unpaid. You must make other funds available to the creditor. FDIC guidance says such a returned item does not itself reflect on your credit standing, but resolving the payment quickly can prevent late fees or service interruptions.
How FDIC insurance works during a change of ownership
The basic coverage limit
Each depositor is generally insured to at least $250,000 per ownership category at each FDIC-insured bank. Ownership category matters: accounts held in one person’s name, joint accounts, certain trust accounts and other categories are calculated under separate rules. A sale does not combine every account you have across the banking system; coverage is evaluated at each insured bank and by category.
Six-month protection after a merger
After an ordinary merger, deposits transferred from the former bank are separately insured from deposits you already held at the acquiring bank for at least six months. This transition period gives you time to review balances and restructure accounts if the combined amount could exceed the normal limit. Do not assume the protection lasts indefinitely; use the conversion date in the notice to calculate when the six-month period ends.

Certificates of deposit
For a certificate of deposit (CD) moved to the acquiring bank, FDIC says the assumed-bank CD remains separately insured until the earliest maturity date after the six-month transition period. A CD that matures during the six-month period can retain separate coverage when it is renewed for the same term and dollar amount under the stated conditions. Check the maturity date, renewal instruction and interest rate before authorizing any change, because allowing an automatic renewal on different terms can affect both liquidity and coverage.
Insurance in a failure
In a failed-bank purchase and assumption, insured balances become available through the assuming bank. If the FDIC pays depositors directly, the payment is limited to the applicable insured amount. Funds above the limit may be treated as an uninsured claim against the failed bank’s receivership and are not immediately guaranteed. Keep records showing account ownership, beneficiaries and balances if the FDIC requests documentation.
What happens to a mortgage, auto loan or other loan
The debt does not vanish
A bank sale or failure does not cancel your borrowing obligation. The FDIC states: “A bank failure does not change your obligation as a borrower to make payments and comply with the terms of your loan.” Continue the scheduled principal, interest, escrow and fee payments unless an official notice gives a different, lawful instruction.

Loan terms generally remain the same
If the loan owner or servicer changes, the sale itself does not rewrite the contract. FDIC borrower guidance says, “The sale does not affect the terms of your loan.” For a mortgage, the note’s interest-rate formula, maturity, payment calculation, escrow requirements and other contractual provisions continue to govern. An auto loan, personal loan or commercial loan likewise remains subject to its existing agreement. A variable-rate loan can still adjust when its original index, margin and adjustment schedule require it; that is a contractual adjustment, not a new rate imposed merely because ownership changed.
Servicing-transfer notices matter
The company that owns a loan may differ from the company that collects payments. When the FDIC or another owner sells a loan, the owner or servicer sends notice with the new payment address and servicing details. For mortgage servicing transfers, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) explains: “They cannot change the terms of your agreement, but it’s important to follow the new loan payment instructions in that notice, so that you do not miss any payments or send payments to the wrong address.” The notice should identify the effective date, new servicer, payment methods, customer-service contact and treatment of payments sent to the former servicer.
Credit cards and revolving credit
A credit-card account can move to a new issuing bank or servicing platform. The card agreement controls whether the issuer may change an interest rate, fee, rewards feature or other term, and required advance notice still applies. A transfer alone does not erase an outstanding balance or suspend the minimum-payment obligation. Follow the new statement and payment instructions while retaining prior statements for your records.

How to protect payments during the transition
- Identify the transaction. Confirm whether the notice describes a planned merger, an acquisition of your loan, or an FDIC failure resolution.
- Record key dates. Write down the conversion or closure date, the first date the new portal accepts payments, and any deadline for replacing checks or cards.
- Verify the source. Use the phone number, website address or branch information printed in an official notice or on a statement you already possess. Do not provide credentials through an unsolicited text, email or caller.
- Confirm account details. Compare the new routing number, account number, debit-card number and online-banking login with each employer, benefit agency and biller that uses your account.
- Re-establish loan autopay safely. Confirm the new servicer, payment address and portal. If you must create a new recurring debit, set it up through the verified portal and keep the confirmation number.
- Make the next payment early. Allow extra processing time around the conversion date. If a payment was sent to the former address, retain proof of delivery and contact both servicers promptly.
- Check the first statement. Match the opening balance, interest, escrow, fees and payment history against your last statement from the former institution.
- Save records. Keep notices, statements, screenshots of payment confirmations, canceled checks and correspondence until the transition and any reconciliation are complete.
What can change, and what cannot

| Checking or savings account | Balance and ownership record | Rate, fees, routing number, account number, cards, branches and digital access | Conversion date, rate sheet, fee schedule and payment instructions |
| CD | Principal, term and maturity under the existing contract during the transition | Renewal rate or renewal handling | Maturity date, six-month insurance window and renewal terms |

Common problems and practical fixes
“My paycheck did not arrive.”
Check whether the employer or benefit agency still has the correct routing and account numbers. Compare the expected deposit date with the bank’s conversion notice, then contact the payer and the acquiring bank through verified channels. Keep enough alternate funds available for bills that are due before the deposit is located.
“My loan payment was rejected.”
Check the servicing-transfer notice for the effective date and payment address. Do not send another payment to an unverified account. Contact the new servicer, provide the original payment date and proof of submission, and request written confirmation of how the payment will be credited. Continue monitoring statements until the payment history is corrected.
“The new bank changed my savings rate.”
Review the account agreement and the notice period. A rate change can be allowed for deposit products when the contract permits it. In an FDIC failure acquisition, an insured depositor may generally withdraw insured funds without penalty if the acquiring bank changes the rate. Compare the revised rate with your cash needs and the insurance limits before moving money.

“A check came back after the bank closed.”
Determine whether the FDIC arranged a direct payoff rather than an assumption. If so, promptly provide the creditor with another payment method and explain the bank closure. Keep the returned item and related notice; FDIC guidance indicates the return itself does not establish a negative credit event.
A concise action checklist
- Classify the event as a merger, loan-servicing transfer or FDIC failure resolution.
- Read every official notice for dates, new numbers, rates, fees and branch or online changes.
- Verify direct deposits, automatic debits, checks and card access after conversion.
- Confirm the loan owner or servicer and use only the verified payment instructions.
- Compare combined deposits by ownership category and use the six-month transition period to address possible excess coverage.
- For each CD, note maturity and renewal terms before the transition protection ends.
- Retain statements and payment evidence until all balances and transactions reconcile.
For a routine sale, the practical result is usually continuity with new account or servicing details. For a failure, access to insured deposits depends on whether an assuming bank takes them or the FDIC pays them directly. In both cases, your loan payment obligation continues, and the official transition notice is the controlling source for dates and routing instructions.
